What are the signs and symptoms of ocular rosacea? Rosacea is also known as acne rosacea. It is a dermatologic condition that affects the midfacial region. One can find erythema, papules, pustules, telangiectasias, and rhinophyma. This problem usually affects those with light skin. It is characterized by bumps and redness localizing on the cheeks, forehead and nose. Extractions: th Annual Meeting DOG 2000 K 279 Migraine with accompanying ocular symptoms associated with APC resistance T. Büchner, U. Schnorbus, I. Husstedt, H. Gerding Background: APC resistance due to factor V Leiden mutation is the most common genetic cause of thrombophilia in Europe (3-7% of the population). Carriers have an increased risk of venous thromboembolism. The role of this defect in arterial or microvascular ischemia is still not known. Case report: We examined a 27 year-old female with a 16 year history of migraine and visual field defects in her left eye for 2 weeks. Visual acuity was 20/20 on both eyes. Slit lamp examination, pupillary reflexes, ophthalmoscopy, fluorescein angiography and VEP were unremarkable. Therapy with flunaricin for migraine was started and visual fields deteriorated in both eyes over a period of 4 weeks. Neurologic, radiologic (MRI) and doppler ultrasonographic examinations were unremarkable. The ERG showed a slight asymmetry in cone and rod recordings and a clear difference between both eyes in the oscillatory potentials (symmetrical 8 years ago). The patient was found to be heterozygous for factor V Leiden mutation (G1691A). Therapy with coumarin was instituted at INR 2.0-3.0 and no further deterioration occured.

Extractions: I have been diagnosed with Occular Migraines as well. Mine start in the middle of my field of vision as a blur, then slowly spread like a donut to my outer periphery. The whole thing lasts about 20 minutes and is triggered by a flash of bright light (sunlight, light bulb, etc.). No pain, just a challenge to read or drive. I was advised at Mayo Clinic that there is no lasting nerve damage, nor was there any medication required. Is Maxalt a prescription drug? Does it have side effects? Is it worth the cost and trouble? Additional diagnostic criteria included palpation of a swollen trochlea and obvious trochlea tenderness. In such cases, there is an exacerbation of pain upon palpation of the trochlea or when attempting supraduction of the symptomatic eye.

Extractions: MONDAY, Dec. 23 (HealthScoutNews) Consider this happy holiday tableau: A polished party table that is gleaming with polished silver, afire with candles and laden with smoked salmon, smoked ham, red wine, Camembert, Brie and a variety of salted nuts. And there you are, fresh from Bloomingdale's where you've been stalked and spritzed by perfume saleswomen, fresh from a mad cab ride across town. Now your head is pounding with an incipient migraine as you fumble for medication and try to think of an excuse to leave early. Everything on that party table, not to mention the unwanted jet of perfume, the scrambling to get to the party on time and the lack of sleep the night before, is a potential migraine trigger. "The holiday season seems to be a time of disaster for people with migraine," says Dr. Larry Newman, director of the Headache Institute at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. "If you think of every potential trigger for migraine, this is the time of year we expose our migraine sufferers to them. Tis the season to have migraine."

Extractions: SYNOPSIS: Some shampoos popular with African Americans contain high enough doses of estrogen to push young girls into early puberty. Unbeknown to many parents, a few hair products - especially some marketed to black people - contain small amounts of hormones that could cause premature sexual development in girls. The evidence that hair products containing oestrogens cause premature puberty is largely circumstantial, and the case is still unproven. But Ella Toombs, acting director for the Office of Cosmetics and Colors at the US Food and Drug Administration, told New Scientist : "No amount [of oestrogen] is considered safe and can be included in an over-the-counter product." Under FDA regulations, over-the-counter products containing hormones are drugs, and thus require specific approval. However, there appears to be a grey area regarding products marketed before 1994. The FDA failed to respond to a request to clarify the position. At least five companies are still making hormone-containing hair products, a source within the industry - who preferred not to be named - told New Scientist Throughout the West, girls are tending to reach puberty earlier. This has been blamed on everything from improved diet to environmental contaminants. But African-American girls are developing even earlier than their white counterparts. About half of black girls in the US begin developing breasts or pubic hair by age eight, compared with just 15 per cent of white girls, one study has found. In Africa, girls enter puberty much later, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
