    Extractions: By Maximum Crowe 30 Odd Foot of Grunts continues to impress, this time with the band's second full-length CD, Bastard Life or Clarity. BLOC, as the CD has come to be known by fans and the band alike, is the most polished Grunts recording yet, combining stronger lyrics, a more experimental sound, and cohesive playing by the now six-member band Russell, Dean Cochran, Garth Adam, Dave Kelly, Dave Wilkins and Stewart Kirwan. The addition of Kirwan's trumpet, in particular, adds just the right amount of pathos or passion to the band's all-too-personal songs. For most fans, the Grunts have lost a bit of mystery. By the time BLOC came to a mailbox or record store near you, odds are many of the songs were already familiar. The band's music is available online at various sites in either authorized or bootleg form, and most of the songs on BLOC were performed live onstage in Austin, Texas, last summer. But what it lacks in surprises, it makes up for in refinement, both musically and lyrically. At times Gaslight, the band's first full-length recording, felt like a hodge-podge of songs both great ("David," "Eternity," "What You Want Me to Forget") and forgettable ("Wendy," "You Treat Me Like Chocolate"). But here the Grunts not only have something to say, but also know how to say it. Arguably the best song on the CD and the one with most radio hit-potential is "Sail Those Same Oceans." Its strongest element is a breezy melody that's both distinct and familiar enough to warrant repeat listenings. Coming in a strong second, though, would be "Swept Away Bayou [Facing The Headlights Alone]." Bad pun in the title notwithstanding, the song is pure energy. You'll find yourself humming the chorus long after the CD's ended.

    Extractions: By Maximum Crowe (January 15, 2000) For further proof that 30 Odd Foot of Grunts is getting better with each release, check out the band's new CD single featuring The Legend of Barry Kable and Inside Her Eyes. The first thing longtime fans will notice is how good, production-wise, both tracks sound. Russell has said he wants to avoid a spit-and-polish, studio-enhanced sound in order to keep the band's distinctly Australian feel. But here the higher production values make the Grunts seem all the more serious about their music. The first track is a newly remixed Legend of Barry Kable, which was first heard as a live track on the band's full-length CD, Gaslight. Noticeably missing from the remix, done while Russell was filming Gladiator in Malta, is the live track's lengthy spoken introduction by Russell. It's a disappointment to the listener, at first, not to hear his deep, smoky voice captivating your ear. But omitting it from this version puts the focus on the song itself, a fact-based story about a man whose life started out bad and only got worse. (Rest assured, there is a spoken part midway through the remix, though it seems a bit out of place.) A stronger song both lyrically and musically is Inside Her Eyes. It's a pop hit waiting to happen, with the kind of radio-friendly chorus that keeps creeping in your head while you're in the shower, doing housework, on the way to work. Still, it's the lyrics that are the song's strongest point. The words and the images they create are something no Grunts song has ever been before: sweetly poetic. Hearing Russell pour his heart out is always a thrill, and something longtime Grunts fans expect. But in this song, it's about both what he says and how he says it. Love talk from Russell at least has never sounded so good.
