The best current estimate is that 2 to 3% of the citizens of the United States are pathological gamblers. The costs to patients and their families is almost incalculable. A summary of the criteria for diagnosis from DSM-IV includes the following: the person is preoccupied with gambling, needs to gamble with increasing amounts of money to experience the original thrill, has tried to cut back (without success, of course), is restless when not gambling, lies to all concerned about the gambling, has lost a relationship, job, and money, and relies on others to get out of trouble. The typical pathological gambler is affable, self-centered, and often likeable. Most are male, and many have committed illegal acts to support their habits. With the rise in the number of Indian casinos, there may well be an associated increase in the number of pathological gamblers. Individual cures are extremely difficult to come by. Gamblers Anonymous (GA), patterned after Alcoholics Anonymous, offers some hope, and Gam-Anon offers support for families of Pathological Gamblers. Few who only enter GA actually quit gambling, but if they enter GA and go to an inpatient treatment facility, recovery rates approach 50% for those who complete the program. Families of pathological gamblers may have a better chance of adapting to the problems than the gambler has of stopping the creation of the problems.

Structured interviews of 109 Australian pathological gamblers found that 37 percent had committed no criminal offense, 40 percent committed gambling-related offenses, 9 percent non-gambling offenses, and 14 percent both gambling and non-gambling offenses. Only 14 percent qualified for a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder. Most crimes were nonviolent crimes against property. Compulsive Gambling. Henry R. Lesieur. Society p43-50, May/June, 1992. This article explores the costs of compulsive gambling to society and to individual gamblers. One study of Gamblers Anonymous members found that pathological gamblers are responsible for an estimated 1.3 billion dollars in insurance-related fraud per year. Children of pathological gamblers were more likely to have gambling problems. Studies of prisoners, alcohol and drug abusing inpatients, Veteran's Administration inpatients and Gamblers Anonymous members found that approximately two-thirds of non-incarcerated and 97 percent of incarcerated pathological gamblers admit engaging in illegal behavior to finance their gambling activities. Surveys indicate that 1 to 2 percent of the adult population are probably pathological gamblers and 2 to 3 percent are problem gamblers.

Many mental health professionals have limited information regarding the etiology, phenomenology and treatment of this patient population. Method: Computerized literature search using PsycLIT and MEDLINE for the years 1984 to 1999. Results and conclusion: There are several competing conceptualizations of pathological gambling: as an impulse control disorder, a mood disorder, an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder, or a non-pharmacological addiction. An alternative model of pathological gambling is as a heterogeneous disorder with different subtypes sharing certain characteristics. Both biological and psychological factors play a role in the etiology of pathological gambling. Treatment options include several medications, psychotherapies and attendance to Gamblers Anonymous, although none of them are established treatments. Potenza, who is also director of the Problem Gambling Clinic and the Women and Addictive Disorders Core of Women's Health Research at Yale, said that as a nation, America has seen a robust increase in gambling. Studies show that with the rapid increase and availability of legalized gambling, there are a growing number of problem and pathological gamblers. In 1998, 86 percent of the general adult population was estimated to have gambled at some time in their lives, up from 68 percent in 1975. Traditional forms of gambling include wagering in casinos or on lotteries or horse racing. Potenza said new gambling forms, such as video poker and Internet gambling, may be more habit-forming than traditional gambling, given their greater rapidity of action and ability to be used in isolation.

Extractions: Experts are Game to Discuss Pathological Gambling among College-Age Students With the predominance of state-sanctioned gambling such as lottery tickets, casinos, online betting and even day trading, experts say students should be informed about the potential consequences that could result from excessive risk taking. In response to the problem, the university is sponsoring a seminar on student gambling Monday, April 17 in Marie Mount Hall, from 1 to 4 p.m. The discussion will focus on the extent, nature and consequences of pathological gambling among college-age students. "We organized this panel to bring in some of the leading experts from around the country and to review what they know about the extent and nature of college gambling, some of the correlates of it, what prevention programs might be useful for us to consider and what the gambling industry is doing to address this issue," says Charles Wellford, organizer and host of the event. Wellford participated in the creation of a 1999 report, "Pathological Gambling: A Critical Review," organized by the National Academy of Sciences and funded by the National Commission on Gambling. What most concerned Wellford was the extent of pathological gambling among college students. He forwarded the report to athletic director Debbie Yow and vice president of student affairs William Thomas, who agreed with Wellford that the university should take a "leadership role" in raising awareness about student gambling.
