    Extractions: Eggs are laid by the fertilized female on body hairs or fibres of clothing in oval "nits". (Eggs are about the size of a pinhead and resemble dandruff). After 7-10 days, small nymphs emerge from the eggs and must feed on blood within 24 hours. Humans are the only reservoir. Three kinds of lice infest humans: 1) Pediculus humanus corporis (body louse), 2) Pediculus humanus capitalis (head louse) and 3) Phthirus pubis (pubic crab louse).

    Extractions: The head louse ( Pediculous humanus capitus ) is one of three types of lice that infest people. Head lice are tiny insects (about 1/10 to 1/8 of an inch long) that live in human hair and feed on human blood. They multiply rapidly, laying little silvery-colored oval-shaped eggs (called nits) which they glue to the base of the hair, close to the scalp. Can you see head lice? Although it's hard to see head lice, you can see the nits if you look closely. They are most often found in the hair behind the ears and at the back of the head and neck. Nits should not be confused with dandruff. Dandruff can easily be flicked off the hair; nits cannot because they are firmly attached to individual hairs. Who gets head lice and what are the symptoms? Anyone can get head lice. They are not a sign of being dirty. Head lice are easily spread from person to person by direct contact, and are often found in school settings. One telltale sign of head lice is a persistent itching of the scalp which is sometimes accompanied by infected scratch marks or what appears to be a rash. How are head lice spread and how long is a person able to spread them?

PEDIGREE, a genealogical tree, a tabular statement of descent (see GENEALOGY). The word first appears at the beginning of the 1 5th century and takes an extraordinary variety of forms, PEDIPALPI, Arachnida (q.v) related to the spiders, and serving in a measure to bridge over the structural interval between the latter and the scorpions. The appendages of the second pair are large and prehensile, as in scorpions, but are armed with spines, to impale and hold prey.     Extractions: Se conoce por pediculosis a la infestación del cuero cabelludo producida por el Pediculus humanus, variedad capitis y conocido comúnmente como piojo de la cabeza. Contrariamente a la creencia de que el parásito vuela o salta de una cabeza a la otra, el contagio se produce por contacto directo con personas infectadas y de cabeza a cabeza. Prevalece en los niños por la simple razón de que estos mantienen un contacto frecuente de sus cabezas durante las actividades escolares, recreativas y por el intercambio de peines, gorros o cepillos. Estos parásitos viven alrededor de cuarenta días, en la ropa, utensilios y otros lugares del medio ambiente, aunque sin alimentarse solo viven entre 12 y 24 horas. El síntoma clásico que producen es el rascado de cabeza, esto se debe a que el parásito pica el cuero cabelludo y al hacerlo perfora la piel segregando saliva que actúa como irritante, generando el mecanismo de rascado. Un estudio realizado en Buenos Aires (Argentina) señaló que el 80% de los chicos tiene pediculosis (piojos), de los cuales el 62% de los casos corresponden a niños entre los 5 y 9 años. Una de las principales causas de esta epidemia es que las drogas utilizadas para combatirlos (pediculicidas) perdieron efectividad frente a los mecanismos de resistencia que desarrollaron los parásitos. Por lo tanto, combatir esta enfermedad que acompañó al hombre desde tiempos inmemoriales, se ha convertido en el mayor desafía que deben enfrentar padres, docentes y autoridades escolares.
