Lice infestation is transmitted person-to-person and via intimate objects that tend to be shared (brushes, combs, towels, hats, etc.). Lice are 3-4 mm long, making them barely visible to the naked eye. Body lice are usually found in the seams of underclothing, and generally go to the body only to feed. Hair and pubic lice are located in these areas.

Extractions: Parent/Student Information Handbook Pediculosis (Lice) Lice are small, fast-moving, light gray insects which lay eggs or "nits" in the hair, especially at the nape of the neck and about the ears. Nits resemble dandruff flakes, but appear on the hair strand itself, rather than the scalp. Nits do not brush off as dandruff, but rather are "glued-on" to hair strands. Head scratching and intense itching of the scalp are the two main symptoms which may indicate that the problem exists. Parents should watch for these symptoms at home and examine their children regularly to prevent spread of this condition. In the event head lice are detected at home, please notify the school immediately so we may begin the follow-up procedure in the classroom to determine if any other cases are present. Head lice do not spread disease, but are a nuisance which frequently occurs in school-age children. They have no socio-economic, racial, or ethnic preference. Anyone may get them, anytime! Prompt action by using a proper medicated shampoo (Rid, Kwell, or A200) by all family members is advised. If allergies exist, contact your family physician. Children may return to school once the nits have been removed from the hair with a fine tooth comb, following the initial treatment with the medicated shampoo. Please send a note with your child stating the name of the product used or the label of the product, to the attention of the school nurse. The district will be taking every precautionary measure to see that this condition is controlled at the school level and hope that you, as parents, will continue to check your children at home on a regular basis.

Extractions: The head louse is one of three types of lice that infest people. These tiny insects (about 1/10 to 1/8 of an inch long) make their home in human hair and feed on human blood. Head lice multiply rapidly, laying small greyish-colored oval-shaped eggs (called nits) which they glue to the base of the hair, close to the scalp. Signs of Head Lice Infestation Although head lice are hard to find, you can see the nits if you look closely. They are most often found along the hairline at the back of the head and neck and behind the ears. Nits should not be confused with an accumulation of hair spray, hair gels or dandruff.
