    Extractions: Cause 1. Inadequate application of product. In this problem the chemical does not come into contact with the lice for long enough at a high enough concentration. This is usually due to failure to cover all hairs adequately with the chemical. Cover from roots to tip. This problem occurs most commonly in treating pediculosis in long hair. One way of ensuring that coverage is adequate is to comb the product in with a normal comb. The end result is a head with every hair coated from root to tip, and lying parallel with its neighbours. The "parallel" aspect ensures that the product has been combed through and makes subsequent use of a fine tooth comb easier. The product should be on the hair for 20 minutes.

    Extractions: HEAD LICE (PEDICULOSIS) GUIDELINES FOR CONTROL General Information Head lice are tiny insects that live on the human scalp; they feed on human blood. Although head lice are transmissible, the potential for epidemic spread is minimal. Head lice are not known to transmit infectious agents from person-to-person, but a sensitivity or allergic reaction to the saliva of the bites causes itching. Secondary infections can result from excessive scratching. The greatest harm associated with head lice is related to the misguided use of caustic substances to eliminate the lice (Pollack, 2000). Signs/Symptoms Most infestations in school-age children are asympotamic. When infestations are sympotomatic, itching is the primary symptom. Persistent scratching of the head and back of the neck should be cause for evaluation for suspected infestation. Depending on the degree of sensitization, erythematous macules, papules or hive-like reactions may be seen. While uncommon, secondary bacterial infections may occur. Because lice are more active at night, sleeplessness is another potential symptom.

Pubic, or "crab" lice, usually infest the pubic area, eyelashes, or armpits; Head lice infest the scalp. Body lice infest the body and can be identified clinging to the seams of clothing. The head louse is a wingless insect 2mm in length. The parasite lives close to the scalp, and is dependent upon human blood to exist. Lice can only survive up to two days, but usually only a few hours, away from the scalp. The main symptom is itching. Transmission occurs by direct contact with a person with a live infestation, or direct contact with their personal belongings that are harboring lice.
