Due to the huge weight increase I noticed that he started to limp, yep, back on the operating table he went and the vet found out that he also had hip displasia (grade 3-4) so I started to give him "cosequin" - double strength. By then as I said he was quite comfortable with the amount of cortisone (5mg per day) and I put him on Reduced diet, within 3 months by walking him 10 times a day, short trips as his legs weren't that strong, he lost 9 kilos and is now back to his normal weight (31 kilos). He is a really happy dog and I am extremely close to him. The cortisone keeps the pemphigus down, occasionally it will bother him and the skin will fall off, but it will only take about a week, then it is all healed up again.     Extractions: Your concern in appropraite. Pemphigus is an uncommon and potentially serious disease. I practice in a large city, but because I see it so rarely, I refer cases to a medical center hwere doctors with gretaer expereince than my own can evaluate it. I would suggest a visit to a medical center for evaluation, though perhaps your local dermatologist can provide monitoring so she won't have to make long treks too often. I don't think medications are involved as causes. Pemphigus can certainly be well-controlled nowadays, so don't be too worried by what you've read.

It is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system produces antibodies against specific proteins in the skin and mucous membrane. These antibodies produce a reaction that leads to a separation of epidermal cells (acantholysis). The exact cause of the development of antibodies against the body's own tissues (autoantibodies) is unknown. Sometimes pemphigus appears due to reactions to medications, although this is rare. Cutaneous blisters and erosions with the histologic, ultrastructural, and immunofluorescence features of pemphigus occurred in 39 to 55 mice given intraperitoneal injections of IgG from patients with pemphigus and in none of 58 control mice given normal human IgG. IgG fractions with high titers of pemphigus antibodies were most effective in inducing disease, and this effect was dose dependent. Titers of circulating IgG in mouse serum closely correlated with the extent of disease induced (P less than 0.002). This study strongly supports the proposed role of pemphigus autoantibodies in the pathogenesis of pemphigus vulgaris in human beings and demonstrates that pemphigus can be passively transferred to laboratory animals.
