You are correct in that h-pylori has been theorized to be the bacteria which is the underlying cause of many peptic ulcers ie., gastric -inner wall of the stomach, duodenal - duodenum, these being two of the most common types of peptic ulcers. If your client's ulcer has been determined to be stress related, then reflexology combined with the proper anti-biotics work very well. The areas to concentrate on would be the diaphragm for relaxation and the area related to the location of the ulcers. It would be important to work on them, at first, at least 3 times a week.

It has been shown that if standard treatment is employed for duodenal or gastric ulcer, i.e. use of Tagamet, Zantac or antacids, that although a patient will have fairly good healing, without treatment of H-Pylori the annual recurrence rate of duodenal ulcer is approximately 85% versus only 5% in those treated for H-Pylori infection. In other works, without treatment of the infection, the ulcer will usually reoccur. Treatment for H-Pylori. This includes any of a number of treatment regimes which are discussed on the next page. It should also be mentioned that a person being treated for this condition should avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, i.e. Advil, Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, and aspirin therapy. They should also avoid alcohol.

Extractions: Tips from Other Journals Previous Next Omeprazole and Recurrent Bleeding of Peptic Ulcers Approximately 20 percent of patients have recurrent bleeding of peptic ulcers following endoscopic treatment. These recurrences often require emergency surgery and are associated with a high rate of mortality. In vitro data suggest that platelet aggregation is enhanced at higher levels of gastric pH. However, studies using intravenous histamine H -receptor antagonists to prevent recurrent bleeding have produced conflicting results. In addition, tolerance to this class of drugs develops within 72 hours when they are given intravenously, negating their ability to suppress acid production. Lau and colleagues performed a randomized study to determine whether high-dose therapy with a proton-pump inhibitor would decrease the risk of subsequent upper gastrointestinal bleeding after endoscopy. Patients enrolled in the study were adults admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. All study subjects underwent upper endoscopy within 24 hours of admission, at which time any active bleeding ulcer or nonbleeding ulcer with visible vessels was injected with epinephrine followed by direct thermocoagulation with a heater probe. Testing for Helicobacter pylori infection was also performed at the time of endoscopy.

Extractions: New Light on Peptic Ulcers From the March 24, 1999 edition of "The Journal-Record" This is not a new story, but an old one. Yet, amazingly, many people do not know it. Peptic ulcers are caused by a bacterial infection, not by stress! (Although stress can play a role in some peptic ulcers.) For most of my medical career, it was the prevailing paradigm that peptic ulcers were caused by stress. This was manifested by the overproduction of acid, as ulcers cannot form in the absence of acid or the enzymes in the stomach and intestine that degrade the food we eat. Thus, almost all treatments for ulcers involved some form of reduction of acid secretion. First we used medications that blocked the activity of the vagus nerve, which innervates (goes to) the stomach. This even resulted in "vagotomy," an operation in which the vagus nerve was severed surgically. Medically, antacids in the form of solutions and pills that would "soak up" acid were commonly used. Later, drugs that blocked acid secretion were popular. Thus, a decade ago, the general view was "stress, acid, enzymes." I can best summarize the thinking in the medical profession 30 years ago by quoting an article from a major medical publication of the period: "Certain patterns of relationship were more common in "ulcer" families. Thus the mother of ulcer patients tended to have psychogenic symptoms, and to be striving, obsessive and dominate in the home; fathers tended to be steady, unassertive, and passive. Many ways of life seem to influence the disease such as diet, alcohol, cigarette smoking, emotional strain, and personality."
