Health Library - Pierre Robin Syndrome pierre robin syndrome. pierre robin syndrome is characterized by a combinationof three features, possibly due to the underdevelopment of the lower jaw. http://www.laurushealth.com/library/healthguide/illnessconditions/topic.asp?hwid
Extractions: Pierre Robin Sequence or Complex (pronounced "Roban") is the name given to a birth condition that involves the lower jaw being either small in size (micrognathia) or set back from the upper jaw (retrognathia). As a result, the tongue tends to be displaced back towards the throat, where it can fall back and obstruct the airway (glossoptosis). Most infants, but not all, will also have a cleft palate, but none will have a cleft lip. Over the years there have been several names given to the condition, including Pierre Robin Syndrome, Pierre Robin Triad, and Robin Anomalad. Based on the varying features and causes of the condition, either "Robin Sequence" or "Robin Complex" may be an appropriate description for a specific patient. Pierre Robin was a French physician who first reported the combination of small lower jaw, cleft palate, and tongue displacement in 1923. What causes this condition?
CLEFT PALATES In T(11;22) Pierre Robin Sequence My daughter had a cleft palate in combination with Pierre Robin Sequence (Also knownas Robin Sequence or pierre robin syndrome, though it actually not really http://www.nt.net/~a815/cleft.htm
Extractions: CLEFT PALATES/PIERRE ROBIN SEQUENCE in t(11;22) (the information contained here is obtained from personal contact with families and case studies. Any information pertaining to my daughter's case may not be reflected in other cases, in every instance please consult your own health professionals for proper advice. Information contained here is for educational purposes only) Cleft palates are common among children with unbalanced 11/22 translocation. (approximately 50% of cases) This is where the palate (the roof of the mouth) does not form and basically there is a hole in the roof of the child's mouth. Within our group, Pierre Robin Sequence has sometimes been a first diagnosis of an affected child, and later genetic testing confirms the t(11;22) . PRS is associated in many other genetic disorders, or can be found independent of any genetic causes. My daughter had a cleft palate in combination with Pierre Robin Sequence (Also known as Robin Sequence or Pierre Robin Syndrome, though it actually not really a syndrome, but a sequence) and was her only inital diagnosis until 2 1/2 months of age when genetic testing found t(11;22). Pierre Robin Sequence is diagnosed in children when there are findings of a cleft palate, an underdeveloped jaw (micrognathia) and a tendency for the tongue to fall towards the back of the throat causing feeding and breathing difficulties, and apnea. Surgery to repair the cleft is usually done at around a year or so of age. Sometimes the children's breathing is severe enough to require intubation or tracheostomy. Usually as a child develops, the receded chin will become less noticable, and the airway will grow along with the child

Radiologically, the severe micrognathia and hypoplasia of the mandible is demonstrable, both on a lateral skull radiograph and on CT three-dimensional reconstruction. There are numerous associations of the Robin syndrome, which may also have radiological manifestations.
