Some babies are hyper-sensitive to mercury, and if those babies are exposed to mercury, they get Pink Disease. The most commonly used product containing mercury WAS teething powder, but other products frequently used on babies also contained mercury. The symptoms include weepy red rash, peeling skin, lethargy, anaemia, sensitivity to light, respiritory distress and general ill health. About 25% of babies who got Pink Disease died. After it was discovered that mercury was the cause of Pink Disease in 1947, mercury was removed from all teething powders and Pink Disease became rare. An information gathering exercise by the Pink Disease Support Group has revealed a higher than average incidence auto-immune disorders, Bronchiectasis, Solar Urticaria, chemical sensitivities, allergies, eye and mouth problems, infertility, co-ordination difficulties, poor health, and a proneness to emotional and psychiatric disorders.

Wood from Eucalyptus plantations provides fuel, construction material, and other forest products to local communities. Recently, disease symptoms that resemble those of pink disease were observed on E. camaldulensis planted at Pawe, Benshangul Gumuz region, North Western Ethiopia. These symptoms are common on E. camaldulensis trees growing at this locality The disease is characterised by branch dieback, stem canker, production of epicormic shoots, the production of pink mycelial growth on the surface of infected tissue, and eventually death of trees (Fig. 1).

Extractions: Next to mangos and bananas, pineapples are the third most consumed fruit worldwide. Diseases of pineapple [ Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.] are therefore economically important in the production of fresh and canned fruit products. The pink disease of pineapple represents one of the most perplexing problems of the pineapple canned-fruit industry. The disease is virtually asymptomatic in the field. Pink disease symptoms are primarily recognized when the diseased fruit is canned. The heating process required for canning causes the formation of red and rusty red colored fruit slices that were processed from diseased fruits. Such blemished canned fruits are not marketable. Pink disease represents one of the most important and challenging diseases of pineapple. History Pink disease was originally described in 1915 in Hawaii (6). The pathogen responsible for causing pink disease remained obscure and the nature of the pink color formation of the pineapple fruit tissue was not understood. A myriad of bacteria associated with the pineapple plant, many of which originated from the surrounding soil, made identifying the primary cause of the disease extremely difficult. The biochemical basis of the disease was thought to be complex and difficult to elucidate, and was therefore left uncharacterized. Attempts at identifying the pathogen led to implicating several distinct bacteria as the causal agents of pink disease (5,10).
