Extractions: In 1990 I was diagnosed as having Post Polio Syndrome after a year of extensive examinations and tests at various clinics and hospitals in and around Vancouver, British Columbia. My initial polio attack was in Scotland, thirty six years earlier and at that time I was paralyzed from the neck down. Years of Hydrotherapy and Physiotherapy got me walking again. My right leg has no movement below the knee and is about 45% above the knee. My right hip developed smaller than the left, and leg length was about three and a half inches short. I had the right leg lengthened three inches at age thirty. I was left with a number of residual effects but my initial recovery allowed me to move to Toronto, Canada, where I became a successful businessman. In 1987 I noticed that I was starting to suffer from an ever worsening fatigue that I attributed to overwork and so decided to move into semi retirement in British Columbia. My pain and fatigue became so noticeable that an accountant friend insisted I go for testing. In 1990 the doctors all concluded that I had Post Polio Syndrome and I joined the local support group. By 1992 I was reduced to four hours of good energy a day. If I attempted a fifth hour then it cost me a full day of rest. The strain on my immediate family was so bad that we decided to return to Toronto for family support. In 1994 I was referred by a friend to a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, David Bray, on College Street in Toronto. He told me that he could not repair the damage done by the polio virus but that he could make me a lot more comfortable. David explained that my system was out of balance and that this could be corrected but it would take some time. I am not a cynic by nature and consider myself knowledgeable enough about my condition that I can spot a charlatan pretty quickly. I decided to give This about three months and then I would review my condition.

Introduction The environmental aspects of health and disease are becoming much more clearly defined. The adverse influences of environmental incitants on wounded target organs have often been seen by people working in the area of environmental medicine. Because of these observations a preliminary survey of environmental influences on post polio patients who exhibited the post polio syndrome was done. Materials and Methods The scientific basis for our studies is in the development of the controlled less polluted environment for testing and treating. This environmental wing is in an isolated area in the hospital designed specifically to be less polluted. All construction is done to minimize outgassing of fumes and particulates. Usually porcelain steel and ceramic tile are used for the walls and floors. No smoking, perfumes, or synthetics are allowed in the wing. All bedding materials are of natural fibers. Incandescent lights are used. The air is filtered by a series of especially designed depollution devices. (l) Nontoxic cleaning substances are generally used. Air analysis is monitored by particulate counts, gas chromatography, and mass spectrometry to assume continuous depollution. Many people infected with the virus, have few or no symptoms, and other have only short-term symptoms, such as headache, tiredness, fever, stiff neck and back, and muscle pain. More serious problems happen when the virus invades nerves in the brain and causes paralysis of the muscles used in swallowing and breathing. Invasion of the nerves in the spinal cord can cause paralysis of the arms, legs, or trunk. Polio is most common in infants and young children, but complications occur most often in older persons. Post-polio syndrome is a name given to new symptoms of increased weakness, fatigue, and muscle deterioration that occur in survivors of polio after many years of relatively stable physical condition. A childhood poliovirus infection may cause chronic fatigue in baby-boomers concludes a paper published in the January 1, 2000, issue of the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Paralytic Versus 'Non-Paralytic' Polio. A Distinction without a Difference by Dr. Richard L. Bruno, director of The Post Polio Institute at New Jersey's Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and chairperson of the International Post-Polio Task Force. However, Bruno reports that another 'mild' poliovirus outbreak did cause symptoms. In the very next year, 1948, over 1,000 Icelanders became ill with a flu-like illness causing stiff neck, some muscle weakness, and fatigue. While many of those with "Iceland Disease" recovered, some who became ill in 1948 still have fatigue today. "Iceland Disease was also apparently caused by relatively mild Type 2 poliovirus", said Bruno, "but one that did more severe and therefore more apparent damage to the brain stem - damage that caused chronic fatigue." Fifteen years of research at The Post-Polio Institute has found evidence of brain stem damage in polio survivors who have fatigue associated with Post-Polio Syndrome, including lesions on MRI of the brain, attention deficits on neuropsychologic testing, reduced levels of brain activating hormones, and brain wave slowing.

Of the 300,000 polio survivors in the US, one-quarter to one-half will have symptoms of PPS. If the initial bout with polio was severe, there is a greater chance of developing post polio syndrome. There is also a greater chance of developing more severe PPS symptoms. What is going on in the body? Individual nerve terminals in the motor units die, causing deterioration. Muscles that were already weakened by the first bout with the polio virus become even weaker. PPS is usually not life-threatening unless breathing is impaired. Post polio syndrome is not a recurrence of polio. It is a response to polio, rather than a part of it. What are the signs and symptoms of the disease? People with post polio syndrome can have fatigue , muscle and joint pain, and muscular atrophy. Atrophy means a wasting or decrease in the size of muscles. People with PPS have progressive muscle weakness. Sometimes the muscles in the spine atrophy and the symptoms mimic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis , or ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Some people also have an intolerance to cold, and trouble with swallowing, breathing, and sleeping.
