Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome A definition of POTS and its relation to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the pathophysiology. http://www.nymc.edu/fhp/centers/syncope/POTS.htm
Extractions: Contents: POTS Defined POTS and CFS Pathophysiology of POTS Return to Home Page Patterns of heart rate and blood pressure variation are shown in the figure and are from our paper which was the first to directly discuss POTS in the pediatric population. goto top POTS has been proposed as a mechanism for symptoms of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in a series of adult patients. POTS and CFS may share a common pathophysiology particularly in the young . Recently, a review of patients with delayed orthostatic hypotension (delayed POTS) demonstrated a high degree of association with chronic fatigue. Our preliminary data have shown that POTS physiology underlies orthostatic intolerance in the large majority of adolescents with the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). In those patients we demonstrated loss of heart rate variability consistent with vagal withdrawal, increased blood pressure variability consistent with enhanced modulation of sympathetic tone, and impaired baroreflex with a phase shift causing wide blood pressure swings uncompensated by compensatory HR changes. Preliminary vascular data suggest that these autonomic findings are associated with changes in arterial and venous properties of the lower limbs during orthostasis causing fluid collection in excess of ordinary "pooling" observed in control patients.

Tachycardia means an extremely rapid heart rate, usually signified by a pulse rate of over 100 beats per minute (bpm). Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is clinically defined as a heart rate increase of 30 bpm or more from the supine (laying down) to the standing position within ten minutes or less. Patients with florid POT S develop tachycardia over 120 bpm within 5 minutes or less. Some patients experience supine tachycardia, which is usually transient in nature and often accompanied by sleep disturbances. Studies show that about 75% of POTS patients are women and that a genetic tendency to develop POTS is usually transferred from mother to daughter. For a correct diagnosis of POTS there must be an absence of any other known cause of tachycardia, such as a specific heart

This web site is about a disorder called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). This disorder is characterized by the body's inability to make the necessary adjustments to counteract gravity when standing up. The defining symptom of POTS is an excessive heart rate increment upon standing. However, as you will discover, there are a multitude of other symptoms that often accompany this syndrome. As such, POTS can be a difficult disorder to detect and understand. This site provides an overview of POTS and contains sections on symptoms, mechanisms, causes, tests, myths, links, research and newsletters. There are sections that provide the reader with information on what may help or hinder POTS patients. Personal stories written by people who have been affected by POTS are also included in this site. Extractions: POTS: An overview Standing up is something most of us take for granted; we've been doing it since childhood. Our bodies automatically adjust to the pull of gravity by increasing vascular tone, heart rate and cardiac output. Blood vessels contract, heart rates generally increase 10-15 beats per minute and our systolic blood pressure usually rises 10 mm Hg with only a slight increase in diastolic pressure . Our bodies operate in perfect homeostasis and we stand up with little effort. However, the simple act of standing up can be a challenge for some people. There are disorders that affect the bodies ability to appropriately adjust to the pull of gravity. These disorders are referred to as orthostatic intolerance. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is one of these disorders. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is defined by excessive heart rate increments upon upright posture. A person with POTS will experience heart rates that increase 30 beats or more per minute upon standing and/or increase to 120 beats or more per minute upon standing (Grubb, 2000). These exaggerated heart rate increases usually occur within 10 minutes of rising. While the hallmark of this disorder is an excessive heart rate increment upon standing, patients often exhibit numerous symptoms of

Extractions: Hi. My name is Janet Bray, and I have Dysautonomia, a malfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Dysautonomia includes several disorders, but I only have two: POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and NCS (Neurocardiogenic Syncope). The results of this malfuction cause my heart to race when I stand still, and if I stand still long enough, I will pass out. Unfortunately, not much is known about dysautonomia. However, research is ongoing and several doctors in the United States have taken a special interest in dysautonomia. If you need more general information on dysautonomic disorders, please visit the National Dysautonomia Research Foundation . NDRF also has a message forum that is active. Extractions: (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) POTS is a form of Orthostatic Intolerance. Literally, POTS means that the heart beats too fast when the body is still, depending on the posture. POTS is diagnosed with a Tilt Table Test . A person can be said to have POTS if the heart rate increases more than 30 bpm upon changing from a supine (laying) position to an upright position, or if the heart rate is more than 120 bpm within five minutes of being upright. There are many theories about the cause of POTS. The primary known reason is that the sympathetic nervous system misfires and the beta receptors in the nerves are hypersensitive. In layman's terms, here's what happens to a normal person versus a person with POTS. When a normal person stands up, about 700 ml of blood is redistributed to the legs and abdomen by our old friend gravity. The body responds to this redistribution by releasing epinephrine (adrenaline) to force the veins in the legs to constrict and push the blood back up into the circulation of the body, and thus the head. The heart rate increases a bit to compensate for the blood pressure loss from the redistribution, but after a minute or two, the heart rate slows and the blood pressure stabilizes.

Extractions: Hi, I have been using this site for almost two years, finding it while attempting to get answers regarding an onset of palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, near syncope, etc. After the usual array of tests I was told I had bileaflet mitral valve prolapse of a moderate degree and 2+ regurgitation. I am no longer fearful of every heartbeat and have learned to cope with the days of relentless skips. I have found this site to be very helpful, reassuring, and a place I would come to almost everyday just to read the posts and know I was not alone when all this first started. Thank you to the doctors who provide insight with their knowledge, and to the many who post comments, like Hankstar,Arthur,Deb, who truly show they care and have great information to share.

Symptoms include rapid heartbeat, lightheadedness with prolonged standing, headache, chronic fatigue, chest pain, and other nonspecific complaints. Causes of POTS usually are not identified in individual patients. Reversible causes such as low blood volume should be ruled out. Is there any treatment?
