While leaving intelligence intact, progeria ages the body many times faster than normal, leaving teens with frail bodies of people nearing 100 years old. First described by Dr. Jonathan Hutchinson in 1886 and Dr. Hastings Gilford in 1904. Also known as Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disease . In this disease the aging process of the body accelerates much faster than what it does in normal humans. This process of aging gallops to about seven times the normal rate. Because of this accelerated aging, a child of ten years would have a look of 70 years old. He or she may also have similar respiratory, cardiovascular, and arthritic conditions that a 70-year-old would have. There is no cure for this disease. The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed due to a single abnormal (mutant) gene. Normally for each gene there are two copies, one from each parent. Progeria is considered to be the result of a

Extractions: Progeria, pronounced proh JIHR ee uh, is an extremely rare disorder that causes premature aging in children. The disease is also called Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome. It was first described in 1886 by Sir Jonathan Hutchinson, an English physician. Since then, only about 100 cases of progeria have been reported worldwide. The disease occurs only once in every 4 million births. The word progeria comes from a Greek word that means prematurely old. Most people with progeria appear normal at birth, but they soon begin to grow more slowly than normal. By 1 or 2 years of age, their hair turns lighter in color and starts to fall out. By age 3 or 4, they are almost bald. In addition, their skin becomes thin, wrinkled, and spotted, their bodies take on a stooped appearance, and their facial features look "pinched." Their heads appear unusually large and veiny. The disease does not affect a person's mental development. Many people with progeria are highly intelligent. Most victims are very shy because of their physical appearance. Although people who have progeria continue to grow slowly, few reach a height of 3 feet 6 inches (107 centimeters) or a weight of 40 pounds (18 kilograms).

What is Progeria? Progeria, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, is a rare disease that causes children to age seven times faster than they are supposed to age. It was first discovered in 1886. Currently, there are only 36 children in the world with Progeria. These children go through their lives with serious defects, such as dwarfism, premature aging, and congestive heart failure. According to research that has been completed on this rare disease, the lifespan for children with Progeria ranges from 7 to 27.5 years. The average child with Progeria lives for 13 years. The disease is also known as the Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome, after the physicians who first described it, Hutchinson in 1886 and Gilford in 1904. Children with progeria age about ten times faster than normal. This means that these children develop the symptoms of other diseases, which normally occur only in people in their seventies or eighties, at the early age of ten or twelve years. Children with progeria bear a remarkable resemblance to each other both regarding their outward appearance and their symptoms. Their mental development and intelligence is entirely normal and appropriate for their calendar age. At school they are able to perform quite well and thanks to their open and cheerful nature are readily accepted by their schoolmates. However, due to their unusual appearance, they are frequently stared at by strangers and must therefore learn to cope with this from an early age. Their witty reactions to unthoughtful remarks are well-documented. When Jason, a boy with progeria was asked, "When are you going to die?", he retorted: "When are you going to?".
