Extractions: Congenital absence of one kidney causes no symptoms and is normally not discovered during the neonatal period. We have recently encountered an example of Wilms' tumor in the only kidney a baby possessed. Both kidneys may have failed to develop. This gross malformation is incompatible with life and therefore merits only the briefest of discussions. Certain clinical characteristics recognized by Potter are intriguing enough to warrant summarization. Complete absence of external genitals has been reported on several occasions. We mentioned it only for the sake of completeness and append the photographs for this one example (fig.45-4, see below). Associated with this gross malformation were many internal ones, including complete absence of the kidneys. The facies of this infant suggest the presence of that defect. Incidence.

Extractions: *For Medical Professionals only, registration required Agenesis, renal, absence of the kidney. Bilateral renal agenesis is not compatible with life. The diagnosis is often made antenatally either at routine second trimester ultrasound when reduction or complete absence of liquor will be demonstrated. The kidneys are not seen and enlarged adrenal glands fill the renal fossae. In later pregnancy failure of enlargement of the uterus appropriate for the gestational age, and oligohydramnios are the usual ultrasound findings of the condition. Babies born with this condition usually have typical Potter facies (see Potters syndrome Unilateral renal agenesis is usually asymptomatic the absence of one kidney being diagnosed incidentally. Some cases of unilateral renal agenesis are diagnosed in the antenatal period on routine midtrimester scanning when no kidney is demonstrated on one side of the abdomen. Care must be taken to check all possible sites for the apparently absent kidney including the pelvis and to consider the possibility of a thoracic kidney or crossed fused ectopia. The contralateral kidney in situations of renal agenesis is usually hypertrophied but otherwise normal. Associated renal abnormalities are common.

Extractions: BILATERAL RENAL AGENESIS Bilateral Renal Agenesis is the absence of both kidneys at birth. It is a genetic disorder characterized by a failure of the kidneys to develop in a fetus. This absence of kidneys causes a deficiency of amniotic fluid (Oligohydramnios) in a pregnant woman. Normally, the amniotic fluid acts as a cushion for the developing fetus. When there is an insufficient amount of this fluid, compression of the fetus may occur resulting in further malformations of the baby. This disorder is more common in infants born of a parent who has a kidney malformation, particularly the absence of one kidney (unilateral renal agenesis). Studies have proven that unilateral renal agenesis and bilateral renal agenesis are genetically related.

Extractions: bilateral renal agenesis Potter's Syndrome is a rare condition occurring in sporadic and autosomally recessive forms. It is incompatible with life. The key problem is bilateral renal agenesis. Potter found this in 1 in 4000 births, especially males. Renal agenesis causes oligohydramnios. The lack of amniotic fluid to cushion the fetus results in the characteristic squashed facies and other features of Potter's syndrome.
Pediatric Pathology Here the kidneys are absent from the retroperitoneum, and this renal agenesis willresult in oligohydramnios, because amniotic fluid is mainly derived from http://medlib.med.utah.edu/WebPath/PEDHTML/PED202.html
