Dogs and cats of all ages may occasionally get ringworm, a type of fungus that causes ringlike, flaky, bald patches on the head, ears, paws and back, says Frank L. Moore, D.V.M., a veterinarian in private practice in Westminster, California, who specializes in small animal medicine. It can also infect the nails, he adds. While ringworm often goes away on its own within one to three months, in the meantime it can make your pet uncomfortably itchy as well as ugly. Worse, it's contagious both to pets and people, says Dr. Moore. To clear up the infection fast, here's what vets recommend. For Dogs and Cats Take a little off the top. Trimming hair around the bald spots will help prevent the fungus from spreading and also make the area easier to treat, says Lauren Prause, D.V.M., a veterinary resident in small animal internal medicine in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in Fort Collins.

Extractions: Despite the name, the cause is really a surface fungus - not a worm! The name derives from a time when medicine did not know what caused disease. Because of the circular appearance, it was originally thought to be a "worm" under the surface! (Horrible thought!!) Actually it belongs to a group of fungus called dermatophytes - which means that it survives only in the non-living surface tissues of the body such as superficial skin layers hair fingernails. There are a number of different fungal types which cause ringworm. All are lumped under the group name of "Tinea," with the next part of the name describing the area of the body where it is found, i.e., "Tinea Capitis" (scalp) ; "Tinea Corporis" (body) , etc. Where does it start? Children primarily get it on the scalp (this is uncommon for adults) ; adults experience it on the trunk, neck, extremities and skin folds.

Anyone who shows sheep this summer should be aware of ringworm and a ringworm-like disease that can be transmitted from infected sheep to humans. One ringworm type disease, caused by a fungus, is currently being called "club lamb" fungus. Ringworm of animals is caused by two genera of fungiMicrosporum and Trichophyton. In most cases, these fungi are obligate parasites of the skin and hair (wool). They are highly contagious from animal to animalparticularly in dense population conditions. The infections not only transmit readily to other animals, but they often transmit to human attendants of the animals and cause severe skin lesions. When animal dermatophytes infect humans, the disease is usually more severe clinically than the corresponding disease in their normal animal host. Acute inflammatory skin lesions may develop that are accompanied by scar formation. The past couple of years, we have had outbreaks appear to be present where show-fitted sheep have become infected and are readily transmitting the infection to other sheep (at home and in the show arena) and to human attendants. Sheep that are extensively groomed and bathed seem to be more susceptible to infection. The causative fungus appears to be a Trichophyton sp. that may be related to a variety of T. verrucosum. Infection results from direct contact with infected animals as well as by indirect contact through clippers, brushes, combs, blankets and contaminated pens. Unless vigorously disinfected, these materials may remain infectious for several years.

The spores can remain alive for years in a dry environment. It occurs in all species of mammals including cattle and man. Although unsightly, fungal infections cause little permanent damage or economic loss. Direct contact with infected animals is the most common method of spreading the infection. Spores germinate and attack the shafts of the hair and the surface layers of the skin. Exudates ooze from the damaged skin and mix with debris from skin and hair forming a crusty scab. The grayish-white scab is noticeably higher than the surrounding skin. Ringworm is most frequent on the head and neck, but it may be found over the entire body in severe cases. Infection spreads from the center outwards and resulting in a circular lesion. Scabs fall from older lesions leaving a ring with a hairless area in the center. Hence, the name ringworm. Common treatments include topical application of a 2% solution of iodine, thiabendazole paste or any fungicide used to treat athlete's foot in man.

Once introduced into a cattery, ringworm can rapidly spread and can infect most or all of the cats in a cattery before the breeder is aware that there even is a problem. Transmission of these fungal agents can occur by direct skin-to-skin contact with infected people or pets, or indirectly by contact with items such as barber clippers, hair from infected people, shower stalls or floors. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF RINGWORM INFECTIONS? Ringworm of the scalp usually begins as a small pimple which becomes larger in size leaving scaly patches of temporary baldness. Infected hairs become brittle and break off easily. Occasionally, yellowish cup-like crusty areas are seen. With ringworm of the nails, the affected nails become thicker, discolored and brittle, or it will become chalky and disintegrate. Ringworm of the body appears as flat, spreading ring-shaped areas. The edge is reddish and may be either dry and scaly or moist and crusted. As it spreads, the center area clears and appears normal.
