The Iymph nodes just behind the ears and at the back of the neck may swell causing some soreness and/or pain. Rubella virus is passed to the next person by direct contact with the secretions. Babies with rubella acquired at or before birth can continue to shed virus in nose and throat secretions and in urine for 1 year or more. Anyone can get rubella except those who have had rubella or rubella vaccine. This is the only warning so stressed by the company. A spokesman for the company said that they were aware the Department had deleted the warning, but "we are keeping the warning in place. We prefer in such cases to deal directly with the physician and make a best judgment on a case by case basis." Dawn Corrigan is the mother of a 1 year old son, George, who came down with ITP last December. She reports: "On Christmas Day, 10 days after he had the MMR, I found his nappy full of blood. His nose then started bleeding. The roof of his mouth was dark mauve. His skin was covered in spots. It was really frightening. He was 2 weeks in hospital and still is not fully recovered."

More than 20,000 babies were born with defects during an outbreak of rubella in 1964-65. The same outbreak also resulted in at least 10,000 miscarriages and stillbirths. Fortunately, major outbreaks of rubella no longer occur in the United States. Since 1969, when a vaccine for rubella became available, children have been routinely vaccinated, helping to prevent the spread of the illness to susceptible pregnant women. Most women of childbearing age are immune to rubella because they either were vaccinated or had the illness during childhood. Because of widespread use of the vaccine, birth defects caused by rubella have become rare. However, since small outbreaks of rubella continue to occur, the potential for susceptible pregnant women to become infected continues to exist. As many as 2 in 10 women of childbearing age are susceptible to rubella. Women can protect their future children from the effects of rubella by getting tested for immunity prior to pregnancy and being vaccinated if they are not immune.

About 25 percent of babies whose mothers get rubella in the first trimester of pregnancy are born with one or more birth defects (congenital rubella syndrome) including eye defects, hearing loss, heart defects, mental retardation and, less frequently, movement disorders. Pregnant women are routinely tested for rubella immunity at an early prenatal visit. If a pregnant woman finds out she is not immune, she should not be vaccinated during pregnancy. All she can do is try to avoid exposure to anyone with the illness. She can also get vaccinated soon after delivery so she is immune during any future pregnancies.

Extractions: RUBELLA DESCRIPTION: Maternal rubella (German measles) in the first trimester of pregnancy is generally responsible for a triad of defects in the fetus: heart defects, hearing problems and eye problems; mental retardation also often accompanies these defects. Ocular involvement is typically cataracts (bilateral in 75% of the cases) but also may include uveal colobomas, searching nystagmus, microphthalmus, strabismus, retinopathy, and infantile glaucoma. TREATMENT: Cataract surgery is usually delayed until at least age 2, since the live rubella virus remains in ocular tissues for many months after birth. Unfortunately, this preferred delay also results in a poor prognosis for visual functioning following cataract removal. Monitoring of ocular status (for complications) is recommended. Educational adjustments will vary, according to functional vision. Optical aids and/or illumination levels should be according to individual needs. Glare may be a factor. IMPLICATIONS: Some physicians are recommending therapeutic abortion in cases of maternal rubella, since the probability of serious congenital anomalies is so high. Many are unclear about the facts concerning the vaccine and want to have accurate, scientific information. These pages aim to provide that information. Background MMR contains three separate vaccines in one injection. MMR vaccine protects children against measles, mumps and rubella (German measles). It is given to children at 13 months of age and again before they go to school. The second dose protects anybody who did not respond to the first dose. Since 1988 when MMR was introduced in the UK the number of children catching these diseases has fallen to an all-time low. Children who have MMR vaccine do sometimes experience side effects. These are most usually mild forms of the diseases the vaccine protects against. Very rarely, children can have severe allergic reactions straight after any immunisation (about 1 in 100,000 immunisations for MMR). If the child is treated quickly, he or she will recover fully. People giving immunisations are trained to deal with allergic reactions.
