Extractions: Ruptured Disk Pain by Scott Petersdorf I have been smoking pot since 1969, but it wasnt until about 1982 that I started smoking for its pain relieving effect. I had blown up a disk in my back, and the pain was excruciating. And so threeback surgeries and 20 years later, I am still of the opinion that it gives me relief and is much better than taking Vicodin. I was terribly addicted to that drug for 5 years, and the comedown can be worse than heroin. I wish there was somewhere close to Visalia Ca. where I could get some for medical reasons. The quality is so much better thru one of these places and gives better relief than what you get off the street.

Extractions: Thanks for your question. It is difficult to provide a complete evaluation of your husband's case without knowing the course of his spine problem, and particularly without the opportunity to see the actual neuro-imaging studies. However, it is not common to not attempt a surgical correction of the problem described in your message, particularly when it is causing motor weakness. If you are looking for a sencond surgical opinion, the Department of Neuro-surgery at the Cleveland Clinic has surgeons specialized in spine (Drs. Kalfas and Bingaman). If you would like to make an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic, please call 1-800-CCF-CARE, and ask for the appointment desk of the Department of Neuro-Surgery.

I saw a neorologist, and do to my mobility the day I saw him he suggested that I have no surgery until I can't stand the pain any longer. He said that the surgery was more cosmetic at this time. Living with the pain for the past two years has not only been hard on myself but also my family. I am a school teacher and a mother of two small children. Surgury is really not what I want to do. Do you have any suggestions for me. Is surgery the answer or what?

The displaced disc may exert force on a nearby nerve root causing the typical neurologic symptoms of radiating pain (to an extremity), numbness, tingling, and weakness. Recurrent episodes of severe back pain are common. Treatment includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories corticosteroids , and rest. More advanced cases may require surgical intervention (e.g. laminectomy micro-disc surgery

I have seen a neurosurgeon who has advised me to do nothing since I am not a tennis star. The disc is pressing out to the right and has pinched a nerve. I have slight numbness in the tips of my right index and middle fingers. I have also lost considerable strength in my right arm. Additionally, if I sit a certain way pins and needles go up and down my right arm. The neurosurgeon said short of surgery there is nothing I can do about this. He also indicated after six weeks the disc is still ruptured and that by the time it heals, in about a year, the damage to the nerve will be perminent, meaning I will always have weakness and possibly numbness in my right arm (I am right-handed). He also said that no healing has occurred in the six weeks since our first visit. I find this hard to believe because I was in excruciating pain six weeks ago and had hardly any muscle strength in my arm then and now I have no pain and a great deal of muscle strength. Before he did a hand test with me, I didn't even realize I still had weakness. I am able to go about my daily functions. I have done yoga on my own on and off for 25 years. I started taking formal classes two years ago, although I am not continuing that now. What I have been doing each since this infirmity is:

Looking for info. and guidance. I have a ruptured disk between by C5 and C6 vertabrae. I experience almost no pain. My feet and legs are numb and/or tingling. The numbness sometimes goes all the way up to my butt. The MRI shows a big dent in the spinal cord from the displaced disk. The doc recommends taking the disk out and fusing the two vertabrae to theoretically take the pressure off the spine and possibly return full feeling and function to my legs. Anybody out there had this problem and had treatment? I'd like to hear from you? What are the other treatments?

Extractions: Back pain is one of the most frustrating chronic diseases. Degenerative disk disease is a back disorder that occurs as part of the aging process. It is usually caused by osteoarthritis of the spine, which irritates the vertebrae of the spine with excessive use. When the vertebrae become inflamed due to overuse, they work to heal themselves and leave calcium deposits and bone spurs as side effects. The pain and stiffness that result from this imperfect healing process are known as degenerative disk disease. Degenerative disk disease is a general classification including herniated or ruptured disk, prolapsed intervertebral disk, and others. The disks in the spine are like small sponges that rest between each vertebrae and act as shock absorbers. When arthritis compresses a disk, it tends to bulge out of its alignment; sometimes, it will rupture. When it does, the rupture will usually occur posteriorly. The displaced disk segment may then press on the spinal nerve as it emerges from the spinal cord, or on the cord itself.

The bones of the spinal column, or vertebrae, run down the back connecting the skull to the pelvis. These bones protect nerves as they exit the brain and travel down the back and then to the entire body. The spinal column is divided into several segments the cervical spine (the neck), the thoracic spine (the part of the back behind the chest), the lumbar spine (lower back), and sacral spine (the part connected to the pelvis that does not move). The spinal vertebrae are separated by cartilage disks filled with a gelatinous substance, that provide cushioning to the spinal column. These disks may herniate (move out of place) or rupture from trauma or
Extractions: Patient complains that spinal manipulation caused or worsened a ruptured disc resulting in urinary incontinence and urgent surgery. Ninety percent of patients who have back pain caused by a ruptured disk improve spontaneously with time, or bed rest, or chiropractic care, or physical therapy. Ten percent require surgery because of intractable pain and/or leg muscle weakness and/or bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction from progressive nerve pressure damage. The goal of surgery is to stop the progression of any nerve damage, and to relieve the pain. It is successful in eighty percent of the cases, and it may take days, weeks, or months to improve, depending upon the length of time it persisted, and the amount of damage. Pain is subjective, and there is much less urgency than when leg muscle nerve damage is apparent, and much more urgent with bladder, bowel or sexual dysfunction. This 32-year-old male patient injured his back bending over at work on 1/28. He came under the care of a chiropractor, Dr. #1, on that day and was seen every few days with "adjustments," and usually electrical techniques. He initially began to improve and feel better.
