Extractions: These days, many suffer from a ruptured disk from young teenagers to old people. No more than a few years ago, a ruptured disk was an unfamiliar illness that rarely occurred, but recently there has been a noticeable increase in patients with ruptured disks, making it a common one. Then, what is a ruptured disk?
Oriental Medicine Broadcasting - Hanmedi TV It is hard to point out a cause of a ruptured disk. It could be caused byoppressing the waist for a long time, sudden external shock or stress. http://www.okmedi.net/English/ebody04/ecyber04_2.asp
Extractions: Until recently, 50% of ruptured disk patients were thought to be in their middle ages, thirties or forties, who show energetic activities and are starting the aging process. However, the situation does not seem quite that these days. The incidence of ruptured disks among teenagers and people in their twenties is increasing.

Extractions: Disk, Ruptured Common Name: Herniated disk, Slipped Disk Description: A herniated disk is a spinal disk which has collapsed and is bulging into the spinal cord, pressing on the spinal cord or the nerves emanating from it. This occurs as a result of degeneration of the ligaments and tissues surrounding a spinal disk (i.e.. the cushion separating bony spinal vertebrae). The disks of the lower back (lumbar) or neck (cervical) are the most common sites. 80% of cases of lumbar disk protrusion occur at the L5-S1 level. In the neck the commonest site affected is at the C6-C7 level. When it affects the cervical spine, it is called cervical spondylosis. This condition usually affects middle-aged and older adults. Causes: Degeneration of ligaments with or without back injury (acute or chronic) leads to slipped disk. Prevention: Prevent back injury by p racticing proper posture when lifting. Also, exercise regularly to maintain good muscle tone.

Extractions: The spinal cord , the main pathway of communication between the brain and the rest of the body, is a soft tubelike structure of nerves that extends downward from the base of the brain. The cord is protected by the bones of the spinal column (vertebrae). Nerves enter and exit from the spinal cord throughout its length, passing through small openings between each vertebra. The spinal cord is highly organized; rather than being grouped haphazardly, nerves are bundled so that related types run together. The side of the spinal cord that faces the front of the body contains motor nerves that transmit information to muscles and stimulate movement. The side of the spinal cord that faces the back and sides contains sensory nerves that transmit information to the brain about sensations such as touch, position, pain, heat, and cold.

Extractions: The cervical vertebrae are the seven vertebrae that form the upper part of your spine, between the skull and the chest. The thoracic vertebrae are the 12 bones between your neck and your lower back. Thoracic vertebrae have cup-shaped surfaces called facets, in which the ribs rest and connect to the spine. These joints help the ribs to move up and down during breathing. The lumbar vertebrae are the five largest and strongest of all vertebrae. They are found in your lower back between the chest and hips. The strong muscles of the back are attached to the lumbar vertebrae. Your sacrum and coccyx are the bones found at the base of your spine. The triangular sacrummade up of five vertebrae fused togethersupports the spine and connects it to the pelvis. Your coccyx, or tailbone, is formed from four fused vertebrae and has little function. The vertebral foramen is the hollow part of the vertebrae where the spinal chord (nerve tissues) attaches to your brain and sends signals all over your body.

Extractions: Below, some questions to ask and some alternatives to the surgeon's knife. "Doc, do somethingfast!" By Katarzyna Wandycz SOME 200 million Americans suffer from back pain at some point in their lives; every year almost half a million of them undergo surgery to relieve the pain. Yet several recent medical studies have concluded that many patients who elect back surgeries don't need them. For example, an article in the medical journal Spine stated that as many as 70% of those who underwent back surgery still suffered from back pain for up to 17 years after the surgery. How does one know if one needs surgery? If you are in such excruciating pain that you cannot tolerate it, then you probably need surgery. This is especially true if the pain extends from your back down into your legs. This means there is pressure on the root of the nerve going out of your spine into the legs. There are drugs to alleviate such pain; Upjohn's Ansaid helps reduce inflammation and pain in the spine. Exercise, too, often helps. But if so-called conservative caredrugs or physical therapyhasn't brought relief within six weeks, doctors will usually recommend surgery. How successful the surgery will be depends on what's causing the pain. The most frequent reason for back surgery is a ruptured, or herniated, disk. A disk is an oval-shaped shock absorber that's situated between the bones that make up the vertebrae. The disk has a nucleus made of a thick, jelly-like substance; ligaments wrap around and contain the nucleus. But when these ligaments tear, part of the nucleus bursts out and flows into the spine, putting pressure on the nerves in the spinal column and causing pain.

Extractions: Match ANY Match ALL Posted by Chris M. on April 13, 2002 at 21:56:12: Anyone here ever have a Ruptured Disk? My wife has been struggling with back pains for about a year. No Chiropractor has helped! She started to get really curved from side to side. Pain has gotten worst. From 1st seeing a Chiro, they said she had an inflammed disk seen through x-ray. They said it wasn't too bad but could become a problem if it was to get ruptured. We start started seeing a new Chriro and he was very aggressive with his adjustments. It hurt my wife VERY baddly everytime we saw him. She would basically cry during his adjustments. Every time we saw him she got worst. New pain in new places and the curve kept on curving. I stopped taking her to him after a month of progressively getting worst. She got to where she couldn't get up really, it hurt to yawn, move, laugh....everything. We got her Pain Medicine, an antiinflamitory and a muscle relaxer. After a couple days of these she has improved about 80%. She still has a slight curve and a little pain in her back in hip where it used to be excruciating. She can't go on taking thes meds and we need to seek help to really solve the problem. Does it sound like she has a ruptured disk? What kind of Doc. should I take her to?

Pain Resources Evaluation & Treatment DIAGNOSIS A ruptured disk does not always produce low back pain, but instead, can cause pain that follows a nerve down the arm or leg into the hand or foot http://www.painresources.com/evalu.htm
Extractions: HERNIATED DISK OVERVIEW: The spinal column is composed of a series of 24 bones called vertebrae that are separated from each other by a disk. The disks are about the size of four silver dollars stacked on one another. Their structure is like a jelly doughnut with tough surrounding ligaments and a jelly center called a nucleus. This nucleus will flatten out the bulge depending on the stress applied to the back. If the force is too much, the nucleus can rupture and break through the surrounding ligament. When this happens, it will pinch a nerve either in the low back or neck.
Extractions: Lumbar Spinal Canal Stenosis: A Common Cause of Back and Leg Pain What is lumbar spinal canal stenosis? Lumbar spinal canal stenosis is a narrowing in the space in the lower spine that carries nerves to your legs. This space is very small. It gets even smaller if the bone and tissue around it grow. It takes many years for this bone and tissue to grow. Arthritis, falls, accidents and wear and tear on the bones and joints in the spine also play a part in stenosis. As the lumbar spinal canal shrinks, the nerves that go through it are squeezed. This squeezing may cause back pain, leg pain and leg weakness. Many adults have this kind of stenosis. How does my doctor know I have stenosis in my spine? Your doctor will ask you questions about your symptoms. People with stenosis usually have back pain most of the time. They also may have leg pain, numbness or weakness. The leg pain and numbness usually start when you stand up and begin to walk or exercise. The leg pain has been described as a burning or prickly feeling that may start in the buttocks and spread down to the feet when you start walking. Your legs might also feel cramped, tired or weak. These are symptoms of a condition called neural claudication of the legs. If you have lumbar canal stenosis, the neural leg claudication starts when you stand up, gets worse when you walk and gets better when you stop walking. Often, the leg pain gets better if you crouch or lie in a fetal position (on your sides with your knees tucked up to your chest). It's thought that these positions "open" the lumbar canal and take the pressure off the nerves that go to the legs.

Extractions: Jan. 26, 2003 12:00 AM P hil Mickelson probably didn't realize it at the time, but a few kind words three years ago to Harrison Frazar helped the Dallas native gain perspective. Frazar was in New Orleans and in good position to snag his first PGA Tour victory. But at the par-3 17th hole with a 1-shot lead, he pulled his tee shot and wound up with a double bogey. He finished third. That evening, on a charter flight taking players to the next tour stop, Frazar sat next to Lefty. "He said, 'Hey, congratulations, good tournament,' and kind of left it at that," Frazar said Saturday after moving back into the lead of the Phoenix Open. "I was down, but it made me realize what happened was OK, normal, that even a player as great as Phil has to go through that." Unfortunately, Frazar often gets listed among the best players who have yet to win a tournament. He has seen his share of "Down goes Frazar" headlines on Monday. It can't be pleasant, and you can tell he has beaten himself up about it.
The Problem Spine With this degeneration, the vertebrae get closer together and cause nerve irritation, which usually stems from a bulging or ruptured disk, bone spurs, or http://www.yna.org/New Pages/LProbSpine.html
Extractions: Each vertebra is separated by a cushion, which is called an intervertebral disk (also spelled disc). The outer, thick ring on the disk is the annulus: the spongy center is the nucleus. The annulus serves as a gasket with a goal to keep the nucleus moist. Because of the soft, gelatin-like centers, the intervertebral disks serve as shock absorbing pads and prevent the rubbing of one disk against another. Also, the cushions provide flexibility for the spine. Attached to the back of these vertebral bodies is a bone arch that provides an open space. This space, the spinal canal, houses the spinal cord and nerve bundles. The spinal cord itself is bathed in cerebrospinal fluid (fluid that circulates through your spine and brain) and is covered by several protective membranes. At each vertebral level (i.e., each building block of bone) a pair of spinal nerves exit, one to the left and one to the right, off the spinal cord through a small opening called a foramen. These nerves provide the relay of messages to and from the brain, allowing us to move our body and to feel sensation. Nerves that exit through the lumbar spine affect the hips and legs. One of the basic underlying factors associated with most spine disorders is the dehydration of the disks. As we age, (starting around 30), the gelatin-like centers dry out and become flattened, causing the vertebrae to lose height and its healthy resilience. The spine weakens. With this degeneration, the vertebrae get closer together and cause nerve irritation, which usually stems from a bulging or ruptured disk, bone spurs, or stenosis.

MSN Health - Understanding Back Surgery And How To Avoid It them. Sometimes a disk can protrude, which is called a ruptured disk. This condition is also called a herniated or slipped disk. http://content.health.msn.com/content/article/41/1728_50938.htm
Extractions: The vertebrae are the bones that make up the spine. A laminectomy involves removing the region of a vertebra called the lamina, which lies right next to the spinal cord. Intervertebral disks lie between the vertebrae and serve as a cushion between them. Sometimes a disk can protrude, which is called a ruptured disk. This condition is also called a herniated or slipped disk. The protruding disk can push on a nerve, causing pain, numbness, weakness or paralysis. During a laminectomy, surgeons sometimes remove part of a disk in addition to the lamina to treat a back problem. Laminectomies are most effective at treating the leg pain that can result from a ruptured or herniated disk. The operation is less effective for back pain. Laminectomies are also used to treat spinal stenosis, a condition in which the area in a vertebra that encloses the spinal cord is too narrow. The stenosis also can cause back pain and leg weakness.

Extractions: The spinal cord is one of the most important and most sensitive organs in the body. If it is traumatized, its cells will not regenerate; injuries usually result in permanent damage. Therefore, the spinal cord is protected in a very special fashion. It goes through a bony canal within the spine; it is surrounded by protective bone everywhere except over the disks. This extreme protection reflects its importance and its fragility. The disk is composed of two parts. The outer covering is much like a thick shell. It is comprised of tough fibers that protect and contain the central part. It is thinnest at the top; this thin area is located just below the spinal cord. The central part of the disk has the consistency of thick tooth paste; it is much softer than the outer part. When the outer shell degenerates, it allows the central part of the disk to escape. This is called a disk rupture or a ruptured disk. Since the shell is thinnest near the spinal cord, disk material that escapes almost always goes upward, putting pressure on the cord. Because the spinal cord is encased within its bony canal, it cannot move away from the pressure and it becomes pinched.
