Extractions: Shigellosis So-called shigella are responsible for shigellosis (bacillary-dysentery). They occur primarily in food, especially dairy products and, in infrequent cases, in drinking water. This is why good food and drinking water hygiene are imperative. The bacteria settle in the large intestine, where they cause the characteristic complaints. After an acute initial phase with fever and violent watery diarrhea there follows a long-term illness with bloody diarrhea, which can be accompanied by severe pains. Especially in the case of children, there is a danger of dehydration all the way to loss of consciousness. Shigellosis is determined by examining a stool culture, and is, as a rule, easily treatable. It often spreads among family members, especially children. Sometimes a large outbreak can occur with many people getting sick within a short time. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Diarrhea which may look bloody. Sometimes, stomach cramps, nausea or vomiting may occur. HOW DO YOU GET SHIGELLA? The germs leave the infected person in the feces (bowel movement). The germs must then get into another person's mouth and be swallowed to make him or her sick. This happens when people do not wash their hands well after a bowel movement and then fix food. Children get their bowel movement on toys which other children put in their mouths. Parents, daycare workers, or babysitters do not wash their own hands well after changing diapers or potty-training. Extractions: Ask an Attorney Shigellosis is an infectious disease caused by a family of bacteria called Shigella . Most people infected with Shigella develop diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, and stomach cramps starting a day or two after they are exposed to the bacterium. Shigellosis usually goes away within a week but some individuals, especially young children and the elderly, can suffer severe diarrhea that requires hospitalization . Some persons who are infected may have no symptoms at all, but may still pass the Shigella bacteria to others. Shigella bacteria are present in the diarrheal stools of infected persons while they are sick and for a week or two afterwards. Most Shigella infections occur when bacteria passes from stools or soiled fingers of one person to the mouth of another. This is usually the result of inadequate hand washing and hygiene. Shigellosis can result from eating food contaminated by food handlers who forget to wash their hands with soap after using the bathroom.

Those who may be at increased risk include children in day care centers, foreign travelers to certain countries, and people in nursing homes, hospitals, and other facilities. Animals are not infected with, nor do they carry Shigella bacteria. How are Shigella bacteria spread? The bacteria are spread by eating or drinking contaminated food or water, or by contact with fecal material (stool) from an infected person. Because very small amounts of Shigella bacteria can cause illness, people can spread the bacteria on their hands if they do not thoroughly wash their hands after using the toilet or before preparing food or eating. Outbreaks have occasionally been associated with swimming in fresh water or improperly chlorinated pools.

A small number of organisms (10 to 100 organisms) can cause infection. Shigella from an infected individuals stool is passed to other individuals, for example when hands are not washed properly or during oral sex. Food and water contaminated by an infected individual can also spread the disease. Flies have contaminated uncovered foods from infected human feces. Who gets shigellosis? Anyone who is exposed to Shigella bacteria can get shigellosis. Most severe cases are in children, the elderly and people with a weakened immune system. What are the symptoms of shigellosis?
