Snoring occurs due to vibration of the tissue in the throat, usually while the patient is breathing through the mouth. These short stops in breathing can happen up to 400 times every night! If you have sleep apnea, the periods of not breathing may make you wake up from deep sleep. If you are waking up all night long, you aren't getting enough rest from your sleep. There are two kinds of sleep apnea: obstructive apnea and central apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type. Nine out of 10 people with sleep apnea have this type of apnea. If you have this type, something is blocking the passage or windpipe (called the trachea) that brings air into your body. You keep trying to breathe, but you can't get enough air because of the blockage. Your windpipe might be blocked by your tongue, tonsils or uvula (the little piece of flesh that hangs down in the back of your throat). It might also be blocked by a large amount of fatty tissue in the throat or even by relaxed throat muscles. Central sleep apnea is rare. This type is called central apnea because it is related to the function of the central nervous system. If you have this type of apnea, the muscles you use to breathe don't get the "go-ahead" signal from your brain. Either the brain doesn't send the signal, or the signal gets interrupted.

Not getting enough sleep, or poor sleep due to a sleep disorder, can rob one's energy, reduce mental sharpness, and increase the risk of accidents while driving, or on the job. What is a Sleep Disorder? More than 80 sleep disorders have been identified. The range of these disorders is varied and wide. It is estimated that 30 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders, while 40 million more suffer from intermittent sleep problems. Those affected have problems ranging from not being able to sleep, to being too sleepy during waking times. Most individuals need 7-8 hours of sleep per night to function optimally, though some people will need less, and others more than that amount. When what seems like a sufficient amount of sleep does not result in one being refreshed, or sleepiness remains, a sleep disorder may be present. It is estimated that 60% of middle aged men, and 40% of middle aged women snore. The sound of snoring is produced by the vibration of soft tissues of the upper airway during sleep. The intensity of snoring may vary due to upper airway anatomy, position in bed, stage of sleep, degree of nasal obstruction, and ingestion of sedatives, or alcohol before sleep. Smoking may contribute to louder snoring. Though mild snoring is not typically associated with serious health effects, loud snoring can be associated with obstructive sleep apnea which can have adverse health effects. Treatment for snoring ranges from simple measures such as avoidance of alcohol or sedatives before sleep, to positioning in bed (generally off one's back), to upper airway procedures aimed at reducing the volume, and vibration of the tissues, or relieving nasal obstruction.

In severe cases, hundreds of breathing pauses can occur every night. -Can result either from collapse of throat (causing loud or irregular snores and/or gasps or from lack of breathing effort.
