Extractions: Our meetings begin with listening to a CBT audio tape from Dr Richards Overcoming SAD series. This lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour. We then discuss the cognitive material on the tape and how it might relate to our own life and behaviors. This is followed by a short break. What follows are behavioral group and individual exercises. These, like the tapes, are progressive and build up and become more challenging as participants feel ready to move up on their individual anxiety behavioral hierarchy. There are a minimal number of behavioral exercises in the first few sessions but group members invariably begin to look forward to this part of our meeting as the most fun and rewarding. As we progress in the 20 tape series the behavioral exercises are slowly expanded. Participation in the activities is completely voluntary. No one is coerced into participation; however, they are encouraged to "stretch" themselves just a little each week.

Extractions: It's 5 am and I'm still awake. Usually not a good sign. I'm really hurtin' here, wish I could talk to somebody. God would be nice, but I think I don't really believe he/she/it even exists. This isn't a conclusion I came to suddenly, I've been leaking faith for about 20 years. Believe me, I'm envious of people who have a true belief in a higher power of some type. I feel I can't even pray anymore, they just feel like empty words. I had gotten to the point where most of my prayers were of the foxhole variety anyway, usually if I was having something like a major panic attack or feeling painfully depressed like I am now. I was with my Dad earlier, he's frustrated at my lack of progress. Me too, don't know why I can't overcome this shit. Every day my self loathing gets a little stronger and my hope diminishes a bit more. In my quiet moments I get scared.

Well, you're luckier than a lot of folks because this spring, UB's Psychological Services Center will offer four, eight-week Life Enhancement Workshops, facilitated by a team of clinical psychologists, to help you address your problems. This spring, the group workshops will focus on resolving problems related to stress, social anxiety, insomnia and smoking. The Psychological Services Center, located in 168 Park Hall, North Campus, is affiliated with the graduate program in clinical psychology in the Department of Psychology, and offers therapies whose effectiveness is backed by a body of research. I can benefit from these experiences, because now I can look back at them like old photographs. I will use them to learn and grow. I have become a better and stronger person because of these experiences. My name is Alice Neville. In 1966 I founded THE OPEN DOOR the first self-help organisation in the world for people suffering from agoraphobia, a problem that had affected my own life from childhood to my mid-twenties when I overcame it altogether. Very soon we had 4,000 members, and the late Dr. Claire Weekes, Author of Self Help For Your Nerves came over from Australia to help and advise us, treating numbers of our members, lecturing all over Britain, appearing on TV, radio and writing articles for our newsletters. Because of family and career commitments I later handed over the running of TOD to the members themselves. Some years later I wrote a book (now out of print) entitled Who's Afraid of Agoraphobia? 10,000 copies were sold almost immediately and one of the first reactions was that many people suffered from panic attacks but were not necessarily agoraphobic. Two double-blind, placebo-controlled trials including more than 600 patients demonstrated that Zoloft was significantly more effective than placebo in reducing the anxiety, fear and avoidance behaviors experienced by people with social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia. In one of these studies 53 percent of patients receiving Zoloft responded to treatment compared to 29 percent of placebo patients. Patients enrolled in the study had a mean duration of social anxiety disorder for nearly 21 years. "Social anxiety disorder is the most common anxiety disorder in the United States. It affects work functioning, social relationships and also impairs quality of life," said Cathryn Clary, MD, Senior Medical Director, Pfizer Inc. "Zoloft's demonstrated efficacy in both acute and long-term treatment provides an important new option for people suffering from this disorder."

Shy students often find this task challenging. While there may be many causes of shyness, a few common themes predominate; low self esteem and an accompanying fear of rejection; excessive concern for others approval; and the memory of a past hurtful social experience. When students suffer from these or other causes of shyness, they may be likely to avoid others, be absent from campus extracurricular functions, not speak up in class, be unable to initiate casual conversations or ask someone for a date. They may also have trouble asking for help, standing up for themselves in difficult situations, or give the appearance of being uninterested in others. If I am a shy student what can I do to learn to feel more comfortable in social settings? These tips may help the shy student to feel more confident. Adjust your attitude ; -This can be done on two fronts; changing your unrealistic expectations of your own behavior and changing your distorted perception that others will condemn you if you are not perfect. Practice replacing your self-critical thoughts with more supportive ideas.
