    Extractions: Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by a combination of abdominal pain and altered bowel function. There are many possible causes. For instance, there may be a disturbance in the muscle movement of the intestine or a lower tolerance for stretching and movement of the intestine. There is no abnormality in the structure of the intestine. The condition occurs more frequently in women and usually begins between the ages of 20 and 30. Predisposing factors may be a low-fiber diet, emotional stress, and use of laxatives. Irritable bowel syndrome is extremely common, but only a small proportion of people seek treatment.

It is characterized by intermittent abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, a combination of both constipation and diarrhea, pain and bloating. Some IBS patients report having both constipation and diarrhea in the same day. Two thirds of the patients are women. It is the second most cited reason for missed work days. It accounts for approximately one half of all visits to gastroenterologists. The causes of IBS are unknown. A diagnosis of IBS is actually a diagnosis of exclusionyou rule out everything else. Since IBS symptoms overlap a number of other, potentially life threatening conditions, it is imperative that the person see his/her physician or a gastroenterologist, to receive a proper diagnosis. While it isn't clear what causes it, we know that people with IBS have changes in the way sensations are perceived in the colon. And there are some anatomical changes in the lining of the colon and to the nervous system of the colon. What causes these changes is unknown.

Its function is to absorb water and to solidify the stool into a formed bolus which can be easily passed. If one ingests insufficient amounts of fiber in his diet, constipation may develop. The colon depends upon a certain amount of fiber to produce adequate amounts of stool (bowel movement) which can be passed easily from the right side of the colon to the left side. Adequate water (2 1/2 quarts or more) must be consumed to assure that the stool is soft and not hard. Normal colon function also depends upon a certain amount of daily activity. Spastic colon, these days more often called irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), is a very common disorder of the intestines that leads to symptoms such as pain, bloating, a change in bowel habits, and the production of mucus. There may be constipation or diarrhoea (or episodes of both of these). Another common symptom is the feeling that you need to open your bowels, but just can't. Many people get depressed about their symptoms, which they often feel aren't taken very seriously. IBS can causes immense pain and discomfort, and can seriously disrupt work and home life. But it does not cause permanent harm to the intestines, and doesn't cause intestinal bleeding or cancer. It's not life threatening.
