Extractions: The fourth annual meeting of the Southwest Quantum Information and Technology Network, or "SQuInT" will be held Friday, March 8 through noon Sunday, March 10, 2002 in Boulder, Colorado. This meeting follows the previous meetings held at the University of New Mexico ('99 and '00) and Cal Tech ('01). Anticipated sponsors for the meeting include: NSA/ARDA, DARPA, ONR, Institute for Quantum Information (Cal Tech), LANL, and NIST. A check-in desk will be available at the Millennium Hotel from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM on the evening of March 7. Check-in after that can be done at NIST. Daytime sessions will be held in the auditorium of the main building of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), 325 Broadway. Oral presentations will begin at 9:00 AM, March 8, with a continental breakfast available beforehand. A poster session will be held on Friday (approximately 6:00 -7:30 PM), March 9 and a banquet on Saturday night at the Millennium Hotel (the conference hotel). (Extra banquet tickets may be purchased from conference coordinator Wendy Ortega Henderson; see below.)

Extractions: The exact cause of squint is not really known. The movement of each eye is controlled by six muscles. Each of these muscle acts along with its counterpart in the other eye to keep both the eyes aligned properly. A loss of coordination between the muscles of the two eyes leads to misalignment. This misalignment may be the same in all directions of gaze, or in some conditions the misalignment may be more in one direction of gaze, e.g., in squint due to nerve palsy. Sometimes a refractive error hypermetropia (long sight) may lead to inward deviation of the eye. Poor vision in an eye because of some other eye disease like cataract, etc. may also cause the eye to deviate. Therefore it is important in all the cases of squint, especially in children, to have a thorough eye checkup to rule out any other cause of loss of vision.

Extractions: Reviewer: Greg Aleknevicus Squint is a party game in the manner of Charades or Pictionary , namely getting a group to guess an object.Whereas in Pictionary you must draw an object, in Squint you use 72 tiles that have generic shapes on them in order to form a semblance of your item. As with all these types of games play is very simple although there's a very interesting twist here. On your turn (you do not play in teams) you draw a card (which lists three objects ranging in difficulty from easy to hard) and roll a die which tells you which of the three you must try to form. You then turn over the sand timer and arrange any of the tiles hoping to form something that looks like your item. You're not allowed to make sounds but you can point to certain parts of your arrangement or "animate" the tiles so long as they remain on the table. The twist that I haven't seen in other games of this genre is that all other players are trying to guess your object. If anyone guesses correctly then both you and the guesser receive points (1 to 3 depending on the difficulty of the item). I found this little twist to very innovative as it meant that you were involved on every turn, not only when your team was "up". Involvement is a good thing and this simple change greatly increases it for everyone. The timer seems to be about 45 seconds which I initially thought too short but in practice it worked fairly well. Long enough to form fairly complex items but short enough that there's a pressure to just get something down. Play continues around the table for a set number of rounds and the player with the most points wins.

The squinting eye may turn in (converge), turn out (diverge) or sometimes turn up or down. These can be present all or only part of the time, in one or alternating between two eyes. It can arise because of an incorrect balance of the muscles that move the eyes ,faulty nerve signals to muscles, refractive errors, childhood illnesses, etc. Squint is not just a cosmetic problem. It is always associated with certain degree of functional defect which make it important to treat squint as early as possible. It can be associated with decreased vision ( amblyopia or lazy eye) or double vision ( diplopia ). Loss of binocular vision (ability to use two eyes together) can lead to loss of fine depth perception ( stereopsis ) and peripheral visual field. It is assessed by various orthoptics tests, the aim of which is to: Establish the amount and type of squint Assess how well can the child /adult see Detect presence of refractive errors ( refraction Test for binocular vision Retina examination including fixation pattern Investigate for the cause of squint Squint can present at any age. The cause is not always known, but if squint is suspected, then the baby should be seen for accurate assessment at the earliest opportunity. Sometimes a pseudo or false squint may be present due to wide gap between the eyes , flat nose bridge etc. where the eyes appear to be misaligned but do not actually have squint. Newborn child may have a certain degree of misalignment of the eyes which usually disappears by about 6 months of age but if it persists beyond 6 months then the child should be immediately examined by an eye surgeon.

Exotropia is a type of strabismus characterized by outward turning of the eye or eyes, which is present most of the time. The degree of deviation is usually greater when focusing on distant objects, because focusing on near objects normally results in convergence (inturning) of the eyes. Persons and especially children with exotropia may tend to squint in bright sunlight, unlike children with other types of strabismus. Such people may sometimes benefit from prescription glasses or prisms; however, in most cases, strabismus surgery is required to correct the misalignment. Many ophthalmologists prefer to operate on the outside muscles (i.e. those on the ear side) first, using a weakening procedure (lateral rectus muscle recession). However, the inside muscles (those nearest the nose) may also be treated, using a muscle strengthening procedure (medial rectus muscle resection). Exophoria is an outward deviation that is latent - in other words, it isn't present all the time. It is quite normal to have a small amount of exophoria. However, the degree is generally so small that many people never find out that they have this. I, personally, squint in one eye in bright light, and have done so since childhood. Despite numerous eye exams by many of my colleagues and even strabismus (eye muscle misalignment) experts they have never been able to measure any exo-deviation.

Extractions: Eye movement is controlled by 6 muscles attached to the outside of each eyeball. In order to see correctly both eyes must move in same direction. This is done by pulling by one muscle in one direction and relaxing of other muscle. To see one object both eyes must look at it at the same time. Each eye sees it from different angle and each eye sends a slightly different picture to the brain (Binocular vision). Brain blends the two picture to give a three dimensional image. This process is known as fusion and it gives the ability to judge the relative distance in two objects (depth perception).
