The first reaction I had when playing Squint is that it's a fantastic new game for fans of Pictionary. You don't draw, at least not with pen and paper, but you do create shapes and try to get the other players to guess what you've put together. A set of 72 sturdy shape cards (adorned with straight lines, curves, squiggles, boxes, and many other shapes) are your tools to get the other players to guess words and phrases like "police car," "rocket" or "toothbrush." She suffered from headaches and obtained no relief from glasses or other methods of treatment, so she made up her mind to an operation and consulted a surgeon with the idea of having one performed. The surgeon, puzzled to find so many muscles apparently at fault, asked my opinion as to which of them should be operated upon.

In order that these two pictures shall be fused into one by the mind, it is necessary that there shall be perfect harmony of action between the two organs of vision. In looking at a distant object the two visual axes must be parallel, and in looking at an object at a distance less than infinity, which for practical purposes is less than twenty feet, they must converge to exactly the same degree. The absence of this harmony of action is known as strabismus, or squint, and is one of the most distressing of eye defects, not only because of the lowering of vision involved but because the lack of symmetry in the most expressive feature of the face which results from it has a most unpleasant effect upon personal appearance. The condition is one which has long baffled ophthalmological science. While the theories about its cause that are advanced in the textbooks seem to fit some cases, they leave others unexplained, and all methods of treatment are admitted to be very uncertain in their results. The idea that a lack of harmony in the movements of the eyes is due to a corresponding lack of harmony in the strength of the muscles that turn them in their sockets seemed such a natural one that this theory was almost universally accepted at one time. Operations-based upon it once had a great vogue, but today they are advised, by most authorities, only as a last resort. It is true that many persons have been benefited by them, but at best the correction of the squint is only approximate', and in many cases the condition has been made worse, while a restoration of binocular vision - the power of fusing the two visual images into one - is scarcely even hoped for.

I felt numb with shock. I was only six years old. For two years, I had been wearing those awful pink NHS spectacles. They made me feel different from my normal sighted sisters - in fact rather awkward and self-conscious, and now I had no mum to console me. My father was not happy with the two squint operations so I was sent to Moorfields for further surgery. This time my inward-turning eye was successfully treated, My vision was fine until the birth of my first child. Then my old problem resurfaced again. I just tried to put it out of my mind. It was not helped when I returned to work as an admin clerk for the evening shift, graduating to full-time as the children grew older. It was a strain to look at a computer screen all day. Fluorescent lighting was irritating. So the inevitable lenses were prescribed for long sight. Within the last ten years, my eyes had deteriorated to +4.50 dioptres and +3.75 dioptres in the left and right eye respectively. Astigmatism was detected in both. I felt the whole world was peering at my right eye, the lens of which seemed to be magnified out of all proportion to my left one. They were tinted too. I began to lose confidence in my appearance, my shoulders became hunched and I tended to see through my left eye only. I dreaded every visit to the opticians, worried by my ever worsening vision. I eventually took part-time computer work again, in an effort to halt the deterioration.

Extractions: What is a squint? A squint or strabismus occurs when the eyes are not aligned properly, e.g. one eye may turn inwards, outwards, up or down. When one eye turns the eyes can no longer work together as a pair and a squint develops. This may occur at any age and commonly occurs when someone is longsighted. A squint is a binocular vision problem. Untreated squints can lead to loss of vision (lazy eye) in the squinting eye and should always be assessed by an Orthoptist even if only seen some of the time. A child is never too young to be examined or for treatment to commence. Often, the sooner treatment is started, the better the results. It is never too late to treat a squint which is cosmetically unacceptable and glasses, prisms or surgery can give good results in many cases. When do squints develop? Squints can occur at any age. A baby can be born with a squint or develop one soon after birth. This is called Infantile squint. Sometimes a baby has a pseudo squint where the shape of the face may give the appearance of a squint, although there is not a true deviation of the eyes. In these cases, the appearance will improve as the child grows. A baby will not grow out of a true squint and should be assessed at the earliest opportunity. Where the eye wanders some of the time and appears straight otherwise, this is still a squint and can be the sign of an underlying problem. What causes a squint?

Is it just me with 40 plus year old eyes who find many commercial sites on the Internet hard to read because of the font size being used? (I won't even discuss those sites that offer contrasting background and font colors that make your eyes water at first glance.) Oh! I know the purpose of using 10pt or smaller font size . . . Reduce the number of vertical scrolls! I sure do not want to scroll down one or two extra times to read something without squinting from the strain of trying to read one or more paragraphs Forget that it may concern the purpose/mission of a site, description of a product or service, or any other pertinent information that is meant for the target audience.

These mechanisms can break down in a number of different ways and at different ages resulting in different types of squint. Others result from weakness of, or damage to, the muscles moving the eyes or the nerves controlling them. These latter types of squint are more common in adults. In children under seven the vision in one eye may deteriorate because the abnormal visual experience resulting from misalignment of the eyes, differences in focus between the eyes or other abnormal visual experience may lead to changes in visual connections in the brain and to poor vision in that eye known as amblyopia or "lazy eye". Squint and amblyopia are common conditions, affecting 3 to 5% of children. Both have a lifelong impact on visual function and appearance, with consequences for education, career choice, employment, self-esteem and personal relations. The aim of research is to find ways of preventing or minimise the impact of these conditions. This will have lifelong benefits for the patient and society.
