Of these, an estimated 33% have polycystic ovarian syndrome, generally defined in the UK as polycystic ovaries together with one or more characteristic features (hirsutism, acne, male-pattern baldness, amenorrhoea or oligomenorrhoea, or raised serum concentrations of testosterone and/or luetinising hormone) (2,3). In polycystic ovarian syndrome the associated metabolic abnormalities (abnormal serum lipid concentrations and insulin resistance) also put some women at an increased risk of developing diabetes mellitus (4).

According to the initial description by Stein and Leventhal in 1935, the diagnosis of PCOS was based on the clinical symptoms (oligo/amneorrhea, infertility, hirsutism, and obesity) in the presence of histologically verified polycystic ovaries. Presently, ovarian morphology can easily be identified by ultrasound, which has revealed that PCOS is not only linked to the "classic Stein-Leventhal syndrome", but women with polycystic ovaries exhibit a wide spectrum of clinical presentations. PCOS account for 75% of women with anovulatory infertility, 30% to 49% of secondary amenorrhea, and 85% to 90% of women with oligomenorrhea. The majority of patients with PCOS are hirsute. Extractions: Illustration Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder in which many benign cysts form on the ovaries under a thick, white covering. It is most common in women under 30 years old. The ovaries are glands located on either side of the uterus (womb) in a woman's lower abdomen. The ovaries produce the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Before menopause, they also produce eggs. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that result from ovulation cycles. Many ovarian cysts go away without treatment. The most common cysts are just enlargements of normal egg follicles. This disorder has also been called Stein-Leventhal syndrome. Polycystic ovary syndrome is caused by an abnormal production of two hormones by the pituitary gland in the brain. These two hormones are LH (luteinizing hormone) and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone). Imbalance of these hormones prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg each month. The ovaries produce more of the male hormone testosterone. They continue to produce estrogen but not progesterone. What are the symptoms?
