Extractions: Dr. Floeter received her M.D. and Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis where she studied the anatomical connections of transplanted fetal neocortex with Ted Jones. She did her residency training in Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, where she developed an interest in neurological disorders with involuntary movements. At UCSF she did a post-doctoral fellowship with Howard Fields, studying modulation of spinal nocifensive reflexes. In 1990 she joined Bob Burke at NINDS to study spinal mechanisms of motor control, and after three years moved to the NINDS clinical program. After formal training in clinical neurophysiology in the EMG section, she began studying spinal mechanisms of motor control in humans, and how these mechanisms may become disrupted in movement disorders.

In affected patients, problems with motor development frequently become evident during the first year of life. Usually the characteristic dysmorphic features lead to an early diagnosis. The first described cases of Schwartz-Jampel syndrome were reported in 1962 by Oscar Schwartz and Robert S. Jampel in the Archives of Ophthalmology in an article titled "Congenital blepharophimosis associated with a unique generalized myopathy." In this paper, the authors present the case of 2 siblings, a 6-year-old boy and a 3-and-a-half-year-old girl, who had the following clinical characteristics: Congenital blepharophimosis (ie, decreased palpebral fissure with normal eyelid development)
