There are often one or two enlarged, tender lymph nodes on either side of the neck below the jaw. Strep throat can also occur in children under three, typically presenting with greenish, often foul-smelling drainage from the nose, with skin irritation or sores at the nasal opening. These kids may also have large tender lymph nodes throughout the neck. Strep throat is most common in children five to eight years of age. While good handwashing and avoidance of sharing items that go in the mouth will help prevent infection, this bacterium is quite contagious and transmission is related to close contact typical of the age group. Parents who suspect their children have strep throat should contact their physician.
