Extractions: Dose is absorbed in three hours and almost 100% within ten days. Plasma levels: A maximum level of plasma iron is attained in about two hours after injection. It falls to normal values within 24 hours. This pattern of absorption is repeated in day by day injections and appears to be constant from patient to patient. A proportion of the absorbed complex gives up its iron direct to transferrin the plasma and thus becomes available for marrow utilization and hemoglobin synthesis without intermediate metabolism. During this period serum transferring is fully saturated. INDICATIONS

Roche has the marketing rights outside the US. [Top] Drug to mop up cancer-causing genes (Times of India Online-04/09/2001) In what could be a significant step in finding cure for cancer, doctors at a private hospital here are putting to test, for the first time in India, a drug to mop up the very genes that cause Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), a rare form of blood cancer. A team of haemato-oncologists at the Kothari Medical Centre in Kolkata have used the arsenic drug Trisonex with "encouraging results" on a 34-year-old woman, the first recipient of the drug in India, suffering from APL. "Trisenox, chemically arsenic trinide, is simultaneously being tried at the M D Anderson Hospital in USA as a first line drug along with other anti-cancer drugs, eliminating the painful process of chemotherapy so far used to cleanse the body of malignant cells," team leader Dr Asis Mukherjee said.

Extractions: Structural Abnormalities of Hgb (Part 2) In sickle cell trait (Hgb SA) 25 - 45% of the hemoglobin is Hgb S; the remainder being Hgb A and as well as Hgb F and Hgb A2. No anemia and normal RBC morphology is the rule in sickle cell trait. Only two rare complications, hematuria and splenic infarction are associated with sickle trait. There is no risk from anesthesia, surgery, pregnancy, or strenuous physical activity. However, sickle cell trait has been associated with an extremely small increase in sudden death in individuals under severe stress (US Armed Forces study). Individuals with sickle cell trait have normal growth and development, normal life spans and should not be considered ill. Hb S may be combined with other defects of hemoglobin. Also frequent is SC disease. Mild anemia and splenomegaly is often present. The PBS shows numerous RBC targets and may show intracellular Hgb C 'crystals'. The MCHC is often increased due to loss of water. Larger amounts of Hgb S are made in SC disease than in sickle trait (SA). Patients with SC disease have increased viscosity of the blood causing a high incidence of proliferative retinopathy, painful aseptic nerosis of the femoral head (more than in SS disease), and acute chest syndrome.
