In March 2001, the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: "The number of Web sites offering health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading."Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not as thorough or useful as advertised
Those who have developed a facility for researching information on the internet and determining which sources are legitimate and reliable will find little to take away from this book. Those who find this book useful should not be lulled into thinking that this is a comprehensive guide, either; it is not. It doesn't help that the editors themselves appear to have little to do in the field of skeletal dysplasias. Taking the time to develop skills for researching information whether it's in a brick-and-mortar library or in the Internet is far more rewarding in the long run. If nothing else, you'll find that there are important works not mentioned in this book that should have been. ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Achondroplasia," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Achondroplasia in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Achondroplasia when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Achondroplasia, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt: Dwarfism (pronounced ) is short stature resulting from an abnormal medical condition. It is sometimes defined as an adult height of less than 4 feet 10 inches (147 cm), although this definition is problematic because short stature in itself is not a disorder. Dwarfism can be caused by about 200 distinct medical conditions, such that the symptoms and characteristics of individual dwarfs vary greatly. In the United States, people with dwarfism are often called little people. Disproportionate dwarfism is characterized by one or more body parts' being relatively large or small in comparison to those of a normal adult, with growth abnormalities in specific areas being apparent. In cases of proportionate dwarfism, the body appears normally proportioned, but is abnormally small; the term midget originally described proportionate dwarfs. Hypotonia, or a lack of muscle, is common in dwarfs, but intelligence and lifespan are usually normal. Achondroplasia is a bone-growth disorder responsible for 70% of dwarfism cases. In achondroplasia, the limbs are disproportionally short compared to the trunk (abdominal area), with the head larger than normal and characteristic facial features. Conditions in humans characterized by disproportional body parts are typically caused by one or more...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=138301 ... Read more

Product Description
Fourteen-year-old Josh was born with achondroplasia, the most common form of dwarfism. In this photo-essay, Josh talks about his life, describing the challenges he faces along with his plans for the future. Like many "little people," Josh has trouble breathing at night so he wears a mask that blows pressurized air into his lungs. He also has to have his clothes altered and he needs help sometimes due to his height. But Josh most likes to emphasize the things that make him like his friends: he plays sports, rides a bike, and is a leader at his school. He believes that everyone faces challenges of some kind. He's taught his friends that "the more comfortable you are with yourself, the more comfortable the world will be with you." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Short People
This book is a lovely bookshelf book for the rellies and friends of people with dwarfism in the family. Its easy reading for the siblings/cousins/neighbors children, etc., and gives them a simple explanation of the problems short people need to overcome, but also gives shows the determination of people with any kind of handicap, to overcome and never feel less than their fellowman.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiration!!
This is definitely a book you want to have in your home if you have children of any ages. And definitely a must for every classroom. The book addresses the everyday issues faced by short statured people, through the eyes of a very unique, intelligent and well rounded young man. A young man, like countless other short statured people in the world, that have not let their height hold them back. This dynamic young man obviously has a shining future ahead of himself. Hopefully this book, and Joshua's message will open people eyes, and educate them. I have 4 children, and they love this book, becuase Joshua is our friend and we love him, and we have seen him face his challenges throughout his life, and triumph!. When you read this uplifting book, you will understand why ... Read more

MR. ROSCOE RECEIVES TWO LETTERS.

Mr. Roscoe rang the bell, and, in answer, a servant entered the library, where he sat before a large and commodious desk.

"Has the mail yet arrived?" he asked.

"Yes, sir; John has just come back from the village."

"Go at once and bring me the letters and papers, if there are any."

John bowed and withdrew.

Mr. Roscoe walked to the window, and looked thoughtfully out upon a smooth, luxuriant lawn and an avenue of magnificent trees, through which carriages were driven to what was popularly known as Castle Roscoe. Everything, even to the luxuriously appointed room in which he sat, indicated wealth and the ease which comes from affluence.

Mr. Roscoe looked around him with exultation.

"And all this may be mine," he said to himself, "if I am only bold. What is it old Pindar says? 'Boldness is the beginning of victory.' I have forgotten nearly all I learned in school, but I remember that. There is some risk, perhaps, but not much, and I owe something to my son---"

He was interrupted by the entrance of the servant with a small leather bag, which was used to hold mail matter, going from or coming to the house.

The servant unlocked the bag, and emptied the contents on the desk. There were three or four papers and two letters. It was the last which attracted Mr. Roscoe's attention.
