3-0 out of 5 stars ok review
This review book was ok for reviewing some of the basics of the boards quickly and probably has most of what you need for the written boards.

However, there are quite a few tables missing information from the Kindle version that I bought to read on my ipod touch such as toxicology tables. Given the price charged for the e-version, this is not acceptable. Unless it is fixed, would not recommend buying the electronic version.

3-0 out of 5 stars I had high hopes...
This book is ok. At 900 pages, it is too big and superficial to fit any niche on the bookshelf for really useful books. I've gone back to reading the new Rosen's, EB Medicine articles and lots of practice questions. After finding some mistakes and important topics covered too lightly, it hasn't left my bottom shelf.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh...not great
The other reviewer who mentioned this book simply regurgitating all of the common things you have already read about common emergency medicine problems was correct. It seems to rely more on "what everyone says" rather than pulling in any of the latest literature. This would perhaps be a good book for a medical student doing an emergency medicine clerkship as a quick reference about various topics. As an emergency medicine resident I find it too elementary, and reading the sections leaves me wanting more information even though I understand this is by its nature supposed to be a review book.I find that I rarely pull this off the shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick & Dirty Review for ABEM recert exam
For emergency physicians who desire a single, quick review for the ABEM board certification exam.930 pages of text - which take approximately 20 to 30 hours to review.

Extremely terse, well organized and easy to digest.A clinical vignette Q&A begins most sections.Decent images / radiographs.High yield pearls are highlighted in the margins.Surprisingly up to date - the classic answers are provided with newer evidence-based info in parenthesis.

Not for those who require a more in depth review, but for practicing EPs who only need a brush up on Leptospirosis, Foxglove, and the like, First Aid for the EM Boards is a reasonable approach.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to the level
I was super excited to get this book i even got it as a preorder
the book is fairly huge = almost 1000 pages , n of the biggest First aids in my library, however; the content is not high yield at all, just regurgitation of what you find on First Aid for Internal Med boards with snap shots from other first aids making a huge but useless ER Review

What is unique about the First Aid series is or I'd better say WAS concise rapid review with HY tips, now this is lost in their renewed editions.

for this book:
the content is fair with only the cardiovascular, environmental chapters and the legal issues chapter being above average
OBGYN ER, Pedia, Trauma and infectious = Below average , seriously

Overall acceptable but would not recommend it, since its a crossover between review and concise text but lacking the in depth of a text :)

Very nicely explained first aid techniques using visuals to teach. As an RN I give this book as a gift to first time parents so they feel they are prepared for minor and major situations involving children.

5-0 out of 5 stars It can happen to any of our precious babies, please buy this book
Today I tried resuscitating a 5 month old baby. He died later in the pediatric ER.I have a 3 month old, it hit me pretty hard. Parents...please know what to do if your baby aspirates on his own vomit...know how to clear his airway and provide artificial ventilations and chest compressions. Doing this will help tremendousely until we can get there.

Thanks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time with this
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

I started to use this book as a review for my NBDE part 1.One of the only good aspects of this book is the charts in the microbio section. Also, it has a very detailed index so it made looking up a topic easy.

Other than that, there are glaring errors in this book. It's incredibly hard to follow. The pictures in it are useless. You'll just end up looking at an atlas anyways. It's missing a lot of critical information that I think is important to know for part one.

Everyone in my dental class had the exact same opinion of this book.We all thought we wasted our money!

Honestly, I ended up getting Board Busters for NBDE part 1.It was so much better.More organized, well written, concise, and not as many errors (there are a few which is given with any source). Not many people know about it because it's a new source. But definitely worth buying over First Aid and Decks!!!

Dental Board Busters NBDE Part I, Second Edition

4-0 out of 5 stars good inspite of mistakes
This review book has more mistakes than any book I've ever opened up. Yet, I do recommend this book to review the material for the boards. Most mistakes are spelling mistakes which aren't terrible. But there are also numerous mistakes that give false information. But since it is a review book, these mistakes should be obvious to someone who has been taught the material in the first 2 years of dental school. The notes on the sides of the pages are very useful. Some things are repetitive in a way that it helps to remember them. I really like the style the book is written and how the various sub topics are split up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book is full of errors
This book (2nd ed.) is generally a good overview of topics you should know for part 1. But it has many errors which make me question the validity of the material presented (are there more errors that I'm not catching?)

There are numerous typos including "adduction" instead of "abduction;" page 88 shows a figure of a heart with transposition of the great vessels; however the figure is presented as a normal heart.

page 173 says the outer cortex of lymph nodes have germinal nodes containing T cells. this is wrong.

The germinal follicles actually contain proliferating B cells; T cells are found scattered in the deep cortical zone (paracortex)

on page 174 it says FSH stimulates lactogenesis (milk production), this is not true; milk production is stimulated by prolactin.

definitely read some "real" books before you pick up this one. I hope they fix these glitches in the 3rd ed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Board review
This book gives you a great start in preparation for NBDE Part I. There are helpful side notes and charts that aid in memorization.

4-0 out of 5 stars OK for a comprehensive review
Since there are not many comprehensive NBDE Part 1 review books out there, this book is good for providing an outline on what to study. You definitely need to look up more information to fully learn the material, as some subjects are only touched on, and some information is left out. There are some annoying things:a good amount of typos, and the writers tend to use their own acronyms without explaining what they are. It's almost like you're reading someone's notes from class that made sense to the person who took the notes, but not to you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good last minute review but needs supplementation
This book is great for a high yield review of the majority of information on the boards. Most of the information in the book is accurate and is actually tested on the ABPN exam.I am a mom of a 2 year old and therefore had limited time to study. This book helped me focus on what was most important. It, however, needs to be supplemented with other more comprehensive texts like Kaplan and Sadock or even the Mass General Update for certain (very important) topics including Neuropsych testing, psychological theories/ theorists (Piaget, Erikson, Mahler...), social psychology, medicolegal aspects of psychiatry, learning models, statistics, and psychotherapies. There is nothing in this book about any of these topics. It is nice in that it has both a neuro and a psych section in one book, and makes reviewing Kaufman Neuro more manageable.I was able to read through the entire book a second time the day before the exam, which was helpful for a quick last minute review of pertinent facts. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Edition
I called McGraw Hill to ask when the 2nd edition of these books (Organ Systems and General Principles) would be available, I was told October 2011!
So if you're holding out for the new editions (due to the 1st ones being rife with inaccuracies) then it's gonna be a long wait.

1-0 out of 5 stars Error Filled, wait for next edition
I bought both First aid basic sciences and have the same review for both: DO NOT BUY UNTIL NEXT EDITION. This book has so many errors, there was a 5 page errata in the first few months after is was sold and from what I've heard there are people finding more errors. It's a great book, well organized, good charts and good diagrams, but its filled with errors. It's not worth my time to study and then have to review to find out whether what I studied was correct. I wish I could have the next edition with (hopefully) no mistakes, but I'll be taking boards before they release it, if they ever do decide to fix this disaster.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive Review
I used this book along with my organ systems themed pathology course to get a good review of the anatomy, embryology, physiology and pharmacology involved with that specific organ system. The book has errors in it, but nothing overly major, and the errata includes most of them.Additionally, it helped me to read more critically, and conscientiously, paying attention to what I was reading (You can submit the errors for a potential gift card).I liked that it was more text and explanation, and filled in many of the holes left out in first aid for step 1.Overall, it was a great review resource that I would use again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review book -- all med students should have this!
I have my fair share of review books -- First Aid USMLE 2009, the entire BRS series, Goljan's Rapid Review Path, etc -- but if i had to choose 1 book to use, I would pick First Aid: Organ Systems.I was never a big fan of the format of the first aid books; however, organ systems is written in paragraph form, rather than outline form. It's easy to follow and a great book to use along with regular course work. The margins are nice and wide which allows for annotation.Yes, it's true there are some errors, but there is a correction list published on the First Aid website (its 3 pages long, and most of the corrections are grammatical errors -- it took me an hour to make all the corrections in the book).I personally think all medical students should invest in this review book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I have seen
I spent 2 years reading and mastering the best board review books for the USMLE step 1. This book is the best one I have found. I just took step 1 and got a 99. I would recommend this book over any other book out there. It is an exact replica of the gold standard recipe for acing step 1, first aid, with a little more explaination and better pictures. Compare the two. They have the same content in the same order. Use this book during the school year for the best results. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Metzger
This is really great - not a wonder that it has been a classic for so many years and is still so highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Second-half indispensible for Adv. Beginer/ Intermediate Learner
The vocabulary list ordered by frequency of occurrences in the New Testament, which is the first section of this book, while revolutionary at the time, has already been co-opted by Mounce (and others I'm sure), but the other sections on suffix functionality and the list of vocabulary by root/stem is indispensible for understanding rather than just memorizing Greek vocabulary as one moves into encountering the entire NT/ Koine Greek language. It was worth the money and very succinct.

5-0 out of 5 stars If it's so outdated, why is it still going strong years later?
I want to preface this by pointing out that I don't think such books are ideal for learning vocabulary.I think we process new vocabulary better when we _read_ it in context, or better yet, have a visual picture to associate that context with.

Having said that, people have criticized Metzger's work for being outdated, superseded, not having all the features other books have, etc. Perhaps the reason this little book is still so popular is because people misunderstand its virtues. It is not the amount of lexical data and mnemonic tips that made it worthwhile, only to be bettered by books with more data & tips. Metzger was a giant in the field, and while none could deny that Bauer, Spicq, and Moulton/Geden are better for understanding word meanings than Metzger's glosses, Metzger's slim volume is always ready at hand for quick, easy study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Quick Reference
Metzger's Lexical Aids has been in my library for many years.I use it as a quick reference on New Testament Greek if I don't want to pull out more exhausitve aids.I espccially like the way he has created several indices including an index of Greek roots and a sort by number of occurrences.

This aid was particularly useful when I first started to learn the Greek but I find myself, even today, going back to it for a quick lookup.I recommend this book for students of New Testament Greek.

I have used other resources as well, many of which were recommended by the late Dr. Gene Scott and continue to be used by his wife, Pastor Melissa Scott. But none seem to be as well worn as my "Lexical Aids".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, and affordable little book!!!
I bought this book after reading Dr. P.C. Comminos review. This is a gem of a little book. Here's how it's set up: list words by their frequency (from 500 occurances all the way down to 10), words classified according to their root, ino-european family of languages (helps you see the big picture), prepositions in composition with verbs, principal parts of important verbs, feminine nouns of the second declension, and an index of greek words. Yes I got that from the table of contents.

Total length of this book is 100 pages. It is inexpensive and comprehensive for it's size. A superior product given that it is only 100 pages. You can get this book for under ten dollars. There are few purchases that qualify as "No brainers" in my humble opinion. This is one of those "NO BRAINERS." As a side note if your learning greek you should check out Dr. PC Commino's profile. I have found it very informative, and have never been steered wrong by him. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty basic but well organized and good review
This book is good to read through while on the rotation and covers a lot of the important topics i think. It is pretty basic and you will definitely need to be reading other sources while on the rotation, but this is a good base.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok for basic outline
This is not worth the money if you're studying for the shelf.Maybe if reviewing for a rotation, but since you have to take the exam anyway better to get something more complete for both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fills in holes Blueprints leaves after reading.
I realized that this book really explains things that blueprints only touches on. Blueprints is great probably for passing a shelf exam and its very easy to read but its not as practical as the First Aid. After reading the delivery chapter I realized that everything I had done in deliveries is presented in there and things I had wondered about (such as FHR tracings) are explained in this book in a way that is more memorable than in Blueprints. Not that I haven't read them both. I have read Blueprints cover to cover and it is a good book. But this one supplements it so well.

5-0 out of 5 stars much needed info for the shelf exam
to be honest, i bought the book during my obgyn rotation and never touched it.i was told by classmates that i could pass the test by just doing casefiles, so i did... and i passed.but i didnt do as well as i could have, and later as i studied for the USMLE step 2, i realized how much of the material i really had not learned.i went back to quickly read this book then, and it had all the info i was missing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Better than Swansons
I initially purchased Swansons to study with but quickly decided I hated it. There are soooo many typos and it doesn't provide very detailed explanations. Some friends were editing First Aid and I decided to give it a try. It's in the usual First Aid format, which I was used to. Provided good explanations and I don't think I encountered anything on the exam that I hadn't read in the book. My study plan including reading First Aid front to back and doing as many of the practice questions on the AAFP website (free) and old in-service exams as possible (ended up doing about 800 questions). Several of the questions were repeated word for word on the actual exam. Overall, First Aid was a great part of my studying and I will definitely buy it again when I'm up for recertification.

The only downside I found is that the Women's Health section is a little disorganized and could contain more material. That was my strongest area though so I felt prepared. If you haven't done ob or gyn in a long time though, you might want some additional materials. It also does not provide many sample EKGs for review.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was disappointed after buying this review book for my Kindle and finding that you can't select the section you want to read from the table of contents and jump right to it.You have to scroll through page after page in order to get to the section you desire.Don't know if this can be fixed, but would be a huge improvement to the use of the book on the Kindle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for quick review
This book is great for clinical rotations. It's reasonably portable. The sections are easy to navigate so you can find the snippet of information that you need.I like the memory tips too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too lengthy
It's kind of good for review if someone has time but I think it's as not as good as the other First Aids. I like the Mnemonics to help jog my memory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good summary but a bit pricey
Pretty good summary and add on resource for standard family medicine texts and question banks. The only downside is the price, which I think is a bit inflated because of the "first aid" name that everyone at the stage of requring board cert reviews is very comfortable with. ... Read more

Product Description

“This is a formidable book of record…from the tiny virus, via twenty-eight individual human stories, to an entire continent. The stories will tear you apart before putting you back together, fully armed and ready to go to war with a virus more dangerous than any WMD.”—Bono
“Magnificent, inspiring, informative. Nolen opens the essential door to the brave, suffering, human reality of the African AIDS crisis.”—John le Carré
For the past six years, Stephanie Nolen has traced AIDS across Africa, and 28 is the result: an unprecedented, uniquely human portrait of the continent in crisis. Through riveting, anecdotal stories, she bears witness and brings to life men, women, and children involved in every AIDS arena, exploring the effects of an epidemic that well exceeds the Black Plague in scope, and the reasons why we must care about what happens. Nolen’s stories reveal how the disease works and spreads; how it is inextricably tied to conflict and famine and to the diverse cultures it has ravaged; how treatment works; and how people who can’t get treatment fight to stay alive with courage and dignity against huge odds. Writing with power and simplicity, she makes us listen, allows us to understand, and inspires us to care

the condition of the book was great, as said on description and wa recieved pretty quickly

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
My book arrived in very good condition within the 2 week delivery estimate provided. Not as fast as other sellers, but still delivered when promised. I would purchase from this seller again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book you can't put down
I read this book while in Africa doing my internship and I could not put it down. There are some amazing stories of the struggles and problems African people face everyday. Many related to the impoverished areas but it is a very uplifting read. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys reading real life stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intimate portraits that will pull on your emotions and intellect
I bought this book after hearing an interview with the author on NPR.Then it rested on a pile of books to read for over a year.It didn't seem like the type of book you want to take to the beach or vacation.Or a book to read and put yourself to sleep at night. Then I started to read it one day after hearing of relief work inAfrica from a friend.I read several of the profiles/stories.I kept thinking, ok, she has put the most dramatic ones in the front of the book. They can't be that much different after a few.And I was proven wrong.Every story was unique. They are unique from so many different perspectives.Yet they all have the common theme and sensitivity brought to the reader by a very skilled and aware reporter.Nolen doesn't just drop in on someone and do a quick interview. She wraps many dimensions around each story--human, family, love, economic, political, education and so much more.I encourage interested readers to look at the other reviews. Then buy the book. But don't wait to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One in a million
The introductory maps seize your attention."Adult prevalence of HIV /AIDS" on one page and the people represented in the "stories" on the opposite. There's a swath of dark shading across southwest Africa - that's "Over 20%".To the east, the shade is lighter - "15 - 20%", with two darker smudges labelled "Swaziland" and "Lesotho" - islands of tragedy. At the top, "5 - 15%" predominates, lower numbers hiding the intensity of conditions.Stephanie Nolen's subjects' names run across the other map - the individuals whose stories are related here.

The numbers often lead to "AIDS fatigue" - too many big numbers; surpassing our ability to grasp them. The millions of people infected with HIV/AIDS seem beyond comprehension. After consulting the various estimates, Nolen surmises about 28 million for Africa, approaching the entire population of Canada. Each day, something like 5500 will die of the effects of the infection - two-thirds the population of my community.Every day.All year long. The adage runs: "One death is a tragedy, one million deaths is a statistic."Yet, that "million" represents that many "ones", and each one has a story.Nolen gives us those stories, making one person represent a million others. It's a formidable burden for the afflicted and the writer alike, but Nolen's skill effectively allows the reader to take it all in measured doses.

The opening story is, appropriately, a woman. In Swaziland, women don't turn to activism. They were traditionally forbidden to wear pants until 2003 and the right to own property was only granted in 2006.The little nation has the last monarch in Africa - who has thirteen wives and a fleet of autos.Siphiwe Hlophe had borne children with a man who delayed marriage for years. The discovery that she carried the virus was devastating - it suggested she was immoral, when it was her husband who had been philandering. That situation is one of the AIDS' story social disasters. The infection carries the stigma of immorality, a view widespread throughout Africa - and the West.Traditional leaders, missionaries and even family members vilified the victims as "immoral". It was also deemed an affliction of the poor, a mistake leading to many stressful family situations.Siphiwe, transcended many of these issues by announcing her infection and launching an AIDS awareness programme.Nolen gives accounts of other activitists, including a "Miss HIV Stigma-Free".

The other group most affected by the virus is children - either by being orphaned or by infection at birth.Among the former is 14-year-old Tigist Haile Michael of Addis Ababa who is the sole support for a younger brother half her age.Regine Mamba isn't an orphan. At her age, the term is meaningless. But Regine knows about orphans. When Nolen first interviewed her, Regine had 13 of them - all their parents were AIDS victims - by the book's Epilogue, the number had risen to 18.These parentless children lack education, opportunity and exist on a bare subsistence level lacking any skills to provide for themselves or siblings.Across Africa the number of such children is estimated to have reached 14 million today. What is their future? One path, of course, is always open - at least to the girls.

Is it entirely disaster and is amelioration impossible? There are signs of hope for researchers, but one of those will likely raise a few eyebrows.Agnes Munyiva has three children who live across town from where she works.Seeing up to a dozen clients per day, her job makes her a high risk for HIV infection, but that's not the part she keeps from her children. She's a sex worker in a Nairobi suburb, and she's very special.Agnes is HIV immune, a physiological trait that has many, especially AIDS researchers, scratching their heads, but see her condition as a means leading to prevention. The number of immune sex workers is small, and conditions providing immunity vary. Can enough be studied carefully to derive some answers?Does Alice truly fit the "one in a million" status? In what may seem a departure from the theme, Nolen relates the sad story of Western pharmaceutical firms keeping the price of Anti-Retroviral Drugs [ARVs] out of reach of those needing them.Compounding this tragedy of corporate greed is the role of Western financial institutions such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to cripple the social services.Through Strategic Adjustment Plans [SAPs - one of the few truly indicative acronyms], Western investors demanded "downsizing" of government employees - read "teachers" and "nurses" - to pay off international debts, thousands were deprived of jobs.Lacking land and the skills to work it, those unemployed quickly became destitute.Add those to the young orphan girls and Alice readily becomes "one in a million".One of those will assuredly displace her from her hard mattress and mud-walled hut.

If the foundation of Alice's immunity, shared with a small number of Africa's prostitutes, can be unravelled, the chance of a vaccine increases. That's the quest of Uganda's Pontiano Kaleebu, who's been seeking that preventive step for years.Nolen's chapter on Pontiano is one of the most compelling of the collection. In it, Nolen explains how HIV/AIDS operates in the body, and why both prevention and cure are so difficult to achieve. While the vaccine remains elusive, the "cure" has made hesitant progress. But the drugs work only for a time, then a new form and schedule is required. That means testing, analysis, prescription, scheduling and instruction by health-care workers - many of whom were laid off.The drugs have to be available where and when needed at a price that people can afford. Not easily achieved in Sub-Saharan Africa.

As a Canadian in Africa, reporter for the Toronto Globe & Mail, Nolen is aware of how that nation prides itself on helping those in need.Accordingly, she offers a list of organizations providing that support for the suffering. Those 28 million are still living - minus today's 5500 - and their lives can be extended by ARV compounds.Nolen explains how you can help and what your help can achieve.[stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, But Not the Best Book for Step 2 CS
I read this book along with the two Kaplan books, and felt that this one was the least helpful of the three. You can see my review comparing all three books on the Kaplan Medical USMLE Step 2 CS: Complex Cases: 35 Cases You Are Likely to See on the Exam (Kaplan USMLE) page.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was all I needed!
I used only this book to review for my clinical skills exam. I studied from it daily and from cover to cover over a 12 week period. I also practiced scenarios on a family member, twice a week, using the dining room table as my makeshift exam table. By the time I went to take my exam, I felt confident and comfortable as I did when I practiced at home. I breezed through each clinical scenario and passed without a problem!

5-0 out of 5 stars Really it is all you need along with a good practice buddy
The world of USMLE exams and books is quite expansive and most of the time you don't know how to navigate your way around. To begin with what anyone gets out of any book is usually subjective, and more apparent when an author gives you more opinion and less fact as we are all swayed by how we practice and think. It is difficult to think that science books would be motivated by by personal beliefs rather than scientific facts but an easy way for that to happen is for someone to give you extraneous details and obsolete material that has no bearing on what you'll actually encounter on test day.
For the step II CS, I purchased two books and USMLE world (which I recommend for everything else but this), the other books whose name I won't mention is really fit for CS in the seventies, except such an exam wasn't given then but the author needs to be abreast modern medicine.. You can't for instance expect someone to treat hysteria with a hysterectomy, or Syphilis by introducing malaria or more realistically administer20 shots for rabies anymore.. there is a good reason we have continuing education and seminars so we are not stuck practicing some archaic form of medicine

Now to get to the beef. All you need is this book, and a friend a sibling, a well trained pet, and the 'actor' doesn't need to be trained in medicine, since they'll have the book to score you, what you have missed and what you've done correctly.. little things like draping the patient and washing your hands may seem trivial but honestly it all adds up and equally so. Maybe you didn't write in your differential for hearing loss: alport syndrome, but wrote Osteosclerosis and Meniere's disease, well each one will count for something, draping the patient might makeup for the third differential you've missed.. I am obviously pulling things out of the hat here but giving you a realistic picture. You'll be scored on a number of things, and the more you amass and do correctly the better your chances of passing... out of all the other USMLE exams, I can't imagine anyone failing this one.. These exams are alot about stamina it is true, but this is one where you don't have to wrack your brain for the correct answer.. since there is more than one correct answer.

All the cases on the actual test are quite similar to this book, you know you'll get chest pain, and hearing loss, and abdominal pain, the usual teenager, the depressed etc... if you follow this recipe to a T you can't lose!

a good advise for test date.. forget that they are actors and honestly treat every patient no matter how taxing as if they were a family member.. this is cousin Ed the annoying but I love him anyway.. this is aunt mona the histrionic but I love her anyway, that is uncle Zacharia the schizoid but I love him anywayand in general it is a good practice for life.. even if you go into pathology!

    good luck on your test!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good seller...:)
I found that since i didn't get the book in the beginning but when I contacted the seller & showed my concern...he sent me another book ...& I got that one in the time when he said & it was as he told me about it so it was quite a good experience overall....Thanks....:)

5-0 out of 5 stars The only review book you need for the CS exam!
Study this book inside out and practice all the 30+ major cases in an 'exam-like' timed fashion with a friend, and you will have no problems passing the CS exam. ... Read more

    Product Description
"This writing is extraordinary and unique. First, because it was written by a man whose wife had an affair. Most first-person writing about affairs has been from women. It contains some of the rawest honesty about the pain of an affair that I have ever read. It provides a great deal of hard-earned wisdom about the whole issue of affairs, particularly in healing from the devastation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who truly wants to know what it's like to deal with a spouse's affair - and to learn practical ways to recover and heal."

Peggy Vaughan, author of The Monogamy Myth

Written over a period of two years and based on his personal experience and those of over 100 others who have suffered the betrayal of a partner's adultery, the author has captured the essence of the pain, anguish and inestimable psychological effects of a partner's affair.

From his own struggle to survive and recover, the author shares with those who are trying to recover, suggestions for survival, recovery and ways to deal with the many adverse personal effects of betrayal. Self esteem, trust, anger, depression, obsessing and more are all looked at and the reader is provided with practical suggestions for overcoming these issues.

Readers and other authors have praised the work for its straightforward and simple approach. The author has taken the subject out of the theoretical and gets down to earth with reality, personal understanding and insights gained through experience that only those who have "been there" could ever know.

"I have just finished reading your book. I'm really impressed and emotionally stirred. It is a great book and I believe it will help many people I thought the book was brilliant, and probably one of  the most helpful resources that can fall into the hands of a betrayed spouse."

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally someone who tells it like it is.
This book is probably the one that helped me most through my husband's infidelity, I felt validated for being angry, obessed, and in shock. One of the most helpful chapters in my opinion was the one about the "other person" I think i have felt everything he descriped about the other person, in my case she has purposely tried to futher break down our marriage, but it helped me so much to read about the other person. My Husband actually told me about the infidelity when the other person started getting obessive, and he knew i was going to find out, he is committed to rebuildig the marriage and there are some very good chapters in here on rebuilding trust and even a chapter for the "cheater" to read. My husband read the book cover to cover and said he had no idea the amount of pain i had until he read this book. We both agreed this is the book that spoke to us the most. Honestly i felt like it could have been written by myself when the author was describing his emotions. Really really recommend this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read after finding out about the affair
Brilliant book written with raw emotion and honesty. No judgment just good advice based on history and actual experience. Read this book to see that you aren't going crazy and you have a right to feel hurt and angry. There is a possibility when you get past the raw emotion that your relationship can actually be better when you are ready to move forward. It will be tough and your partner needs to do a lot to help you recover. Get counseling, see your doctor and join The Beyond Affairs Network. Seek help to get feeling like you aren't going crazy or drowning in suspicion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but be forewarned...
I ordered this book about a year after I caught my now ex-husband in adultery and filed for divorce. While most of it was very insightful and helpful, you need to be aware of the content. The journal entries did not bother me, as I totally understand the raw pain and emotions that the author was feeling. However, he continues to use explicit language throughout the rest of the book, and I could have done without that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best first book to read after D-day
I wish I had found and read this book immediately after my husband's affair came to light! Even still, reading it a few months post d-day, it was so very helpful and comforting. Written by someone who has been there!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a Man that has been recently Betrayed, this is a MUST read!
This book is fantastic especially for men who have been recently betrayed by their significant other. While looking for books on this subject, most were written by women.I do love women and absolutely respect them and their opinions but was happy to find this book written by a man.It is a nitty-gritty, down and dirty REAL account of what the author has been through emotionally, physically and spiritually. There is language that is not suitable for the faint of heart but he expresses his feelings very vividly using said language. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Simply okay
Its an okay book, it hasn't hit the sweet spot like First Aid Step 1 did.Still loyal to the brand though.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good material
This is a book that we must have in our preparation for the Step 2ck... i strongly recommend it

5-0 out of 5 stars if you are looking for a book for NPLEX
I used this to study for NPLEX and it got me through the exam
(at least the physical clinical dx part)
Because NPLEX is such a small test...the study material made for it
generally is horrible. You need to use that for some sections, but
for clin/physical dx use this. NPLEX is all about DDX's. Knowing
what the case disease is is worthless, because you need the DDX's.
Use this and compare, compare, compare ddx's, so you know what to
absolutely include or exclude in every case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good condition good product.
The book is in good shape, has a good brief review of the basics for step 2

1-0 out of 5 stars Shipping and Handling Issues
The content of this book is great. However, the method in which is was delivered to me was far from acceptable. This is a paperback book, and the delivery service left it laying in my front yard. Not even close to the door, bu in the middle of the front yard. It had been raining all day and it looked as if they had just thrown it out of the truck and kept going. It was NOT wrapped in plastic and as a result was all wrinkled and smeared on many of the pages. I ended up going to a local store and buying another copy. I will no longer order books from this website if that is how they are handled. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good IM book
This book is very good in terms of its simplicity and very well summarized contents

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
Concise review with good enough details. Easy to read with well laid out design and print.

5-0 out of 5 stars What are you using it for
great book, just depends on what are you using it for,my specialty is not internal medicine, but taking the USMLE CK and step 3 entails much knowledge for internal medicine , this book is very useful and conclusive for this level of knowledge , perhaps the book might be inadequate for an internist who reads Harrison for breakfast :) LOL , so it all depends on your prospectives

the lay out is the favorite first aid lay out with a lot of tables (may be too much ! ) with the side margins notes

    the bad written chapters
    1- geriatrics
    2- critical care

    chapters that could be improved
    1- cardiology
2- endocrinology ( a big mess with cushing syndrome )
    3- ambulatory care

    chapters need to be added
    1- sports medicine

overall for a non internist like me , i find it the most useful and least painful for a rapid review ( its a review don't expect an uptodate or MKSAP level of details here )

for the ABIM I'll leave that to the pros in this area.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sweating the Boards
I got this boards review along with the John Hopkin's one.I looked at several topics in both and found the John Hopkin's to be a little more in depth and easier to get through (better charts, pictures, etc.).I'll probably go over some of the most difficult diseases in both texts.Though Ferri's Practical Guide to the Care of the Medical Patient is really for residents on the wards, it has always been one of my favorite books since I was a medical student/resident and it works as a great refresher for the boards that you can carry anywhere with you.The other books are bulky and heavy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Review Book
I've been using this book for the past few weeks in conjunction with the new MKSAP 14 questions. Thus far just about everything the MKSAP has tested can be found in the book. Its very easy to read, high yield and very well priced. The only complaint is the index. Like all the rest of the First Aid series, its horrible. That aside, this book is a great find. ... Product Description
The Ethiopian famine of 25 years ago was the greatest humanitarian disaster of the late 20th century, killing more than 600,000 people before the world took notice. Peter Gill was the first journalist to reach the epicenter of the famine in 1984 and he returned at the time of Live Aid to research the definitive account of the disaster, A Year in the Death of Africa.

Now, in Famine and Foreigners, Gill returns to Ethiopia to piece together the real story of the last 25 years, drawing on interviews with leading Ethiopians and with an army of foreign aid officials. He conducted extensive interviews with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and the leading development economists, Joseph E. Stiglitz and Jeffrey Sachs. Most important of all, Gill has traveled throughout the country and interviewed scores of Ethiopia's dignified but still hungry farmers. What stands out in these pages are the graphic encounters with these Ethiopians--the supposed beneficiaries of western aid--who still struggle on the knife-edge of existence. What also emerges is the often tense relationship between official aid-givers and recipients--whether in the area of economic reform or the modern demands for "governance" and political change. Twenty five years on, we can say that we did feed the world. But did we change the face of poverty, did we close the gap between rich and poor, did we fulfill the promise of "development?"

A generation after Live Aid, this book questions whether any of world's big promises are being fulfilled. Have aid experts got it right? Are recipient countries allowed to pursue their own vision? Is democracy essential for banishing poverty? Now that the West faces its own economic challenges, it is time to ask whether the "development era" may be coming to an end. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars very basic
very basic, in a list format. It would be much better in a question and answer format with references in the answers like "Review questions in orthopaedics"

3-0 out of 5 stars Very concise
Very, very similar to the material presented in a popular orthopaedic board review course.

Word for word in many places. ... Read more
