Product Description
The third edition of this successful Facts title was authored by the late Dr. Donald W. Goodwin, who wrote with a unique and engaging style defining alcoholism in very human terms. Although much of Dr Goodwin's assessments of alcoholism still hold true today, a great deal of progress has been made in the quest to better understand the underlying causes of the disease. This fourth edition, written by a group of Dr Goodwin's former colleagues, updates the content while maintaining the original flavour of Dr Goodwin's style.

The new edition includes updated information about the effects of alcohol consumption on the body, a new section on the particular sensitivity of women to the effects of drinking, and information and advice relating to the consequences of alcohol abuse for the abusers, their families and society. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Reader
I found this book disturbing. The author defines alcoholism most narrowly:basically one must be completely out of control and not functioning on any level to qualify. This book will provide refuge for thefunctioning alcoholic who is looking for a source to support his denial. The author takes "problem drinking" very lightly, suggesting thatit can and does cure itself at the drinker's will.Much of this bookcontradicts everything I have read or heard from all other sources (andcertainly my own experience with a "problem drinker.")Theauthor also seems somewhat hostile to AA, a bias he should have disclosedin the preface. It is hard to believe that this book represents "thefacts," any more than it represents the author's perspective.Readersshould not assume that the author's MD makes him anything more than a humanwith an opinion; and in this case, one that is not broadly accepted.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb and accessible look at a debilitating disorder.
Goodwin's accessible, effortless style, which he used so well in previous editions, carries the reader nicely through the intricacies of one of the world's most popular drugs and its associated disorders.Excerpts from literature and case studies provide a superb feel for the phenomenology of addiction.Numerous entertaining quotes appear from everyone from Kissinger to Humpty Dumpty.Goodwin provides a thorough look at alcohol itself, the problems associated with excess consumption, common theories designed to account for these problems, and many of the available treatments.Through simple explanations of the correct interpretations of available data, Goodwin not only provides a great deal of meaningful information, but he teaches the reader to become a good consumer of research. This book is refreshingly scientific and lacks the horribly moralistic tone many books on this topic take. ... Product Description
Many in A.A. and other12 Step Fellowships are in real doubt as to whether they can be cured of their affliction or whether they are to languish "in recovery" or simply hanging on to a "daily reprieve" instead of the actual cure of alcoholism by the power of God which was the regular and widely proclaimed experience of early A.A. pioneers in Akron. This book documents and puts to rest the reliable conclusion that alcoholism can be cured. It was cured in 1935. It was cured for a decade after A.A. was founded. American newspapers by the hundreds proclaimed the cures. And always the cure was attributed to the Creator--the power of God. How was it accomplished? You will learn from this book exactly what the original Akron program looked like--abstinence, hospitalization for a few days, fellowship in the homes of believers, once a week meetings, regular Bible study and prayer, use of devotionals, topical discussions of Bible subjects, a "real surrender" ceremony where each newcomer was taken upstairs, asked to get on his knees, joined by two or three oldtimers (after the manner of James 5:16), led to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, led to pray that alcohol be taken out of his life, and led to ask that he be guided and strengthened in his Christian walk. Finally, newcomers joined Dr. Bob with regular visits to the next group of new people at the hospital. The program was specifically summarized by A.A. trustee-to-be Frank Amos for John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and thus specifically identified for all who care to learn the details. There is hardly a detail about the highly successful early program and its cures that is not covered in this new book. It can be used, in conjunction with Dick's The James Club and his Good Book-Big Book Guidebook to lead classes and help people study and be healed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recipe for cure of alcoholism & addictions with God's power
How often I have heard and read among AAs, from people emerging from treatment or from prison or from therapy that there is no cure for alcoholism. This is very very strange. I had become acquainted with Dick B. and learned from him that all the early AAs had been cured of alcoholism, that they all said so, that his historical research showed that Bill Wilson, Dr. Bob, and A.A. Number Three had joined other pioneers in rejoicing that God had cured them of their "terrible disease." Can He? Of course He can. And early AAs said so and believed so. Consequently I have relished each of Dick B.'s later books that have explored, documented, and demolished the fatalistic, secular view that persists today. Alcoholism can be, was, and has been cured by the power of God. I'm a Marine vet, and I'm not powerless over alcohol or drugs for the simple reason that I do not use them and rely on the Creator to guide me, strengthen me, and heal me and show me His way out of temptation. That's power! And God's kids have it. This book shows that early AAs believed the same thing, got well, and frequently recorded their cures. The book is a must read for those who want to overcome the perpetual sickness and perennial relapse theories that are killing recovery today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Stuffed Full of Hope for Healing - from historical fact
I don't think anyone was more surprised than Dick B. and some of his colleagues who were researching with and for him and speaking at some of his history conferences. There had always been the curious "There is no cure for alcoholism." But where did this negative come from? It was so unusual that the A.A. book Dr. Bob and the Good Oldtimers wrote a footnote that explained that the original writers and founders had been mislead and had mistakenly used such terms as "cured" and "ex-alcoholic." And it let the matter go at that. And so for at least 25 years, today's AAs have naively swallowed this undocumented nonsense and wandered from awakenings to experiences to daily reprieves and to personality change to explain the object of A.A. and its Steps. But that's not A.A. history. It's belated revisionism. The facts and the conclusion are simple: Alcoholism can be cured. God can cure alcoholics. God has cured alcoholics. And God will cure those alcoholics who believe and seek help.
Three or four years ago, the truth burst on the scene--after years of darkness. Author Richard K. went to A.A. General Services and purchased the huge scrapbook that contains uncontradicted documented newspaper and magazine accounts of more than a decade of early A.A. publicity on cure. Then we all woke up. Dr. Bob had said he was cured, and he said it as he and Bill W. were hospitalizing A.A. Number Three. A.A. Number Three and Bill Wilson both said on what has become page 191 of the Big Book that the Lord had cured them of their terrible disease. Over and over the affirmations that God can heal were repeated. And that's the fact. Healings by religious means were so well known that Dr. Carl Jung, Professor William James, and Dr. William Silkworth all commented extensively on the cure of alcoholism by conversion and the work of the Great Physician. And Dick set to work revamping his research. He put his focus on what was said and done about healing. He first wrote Cured. Then he wrote Why Early A.A. Succeeded. Then he wrote this book. And a knowledge of all is essential if you want to know what God really did and still can do for the alcoholic who still suffers. You'll catch flak from the ignorant when you start talking about cure. Treatment centers won't welcome the assertion. Nor therapists. Nor insurance companies. Nor government grant seekers. Keep them sick. Keep them coming back. And keep up the search for drugs or therapy or some magic that will stop the alcoholic from drinking. That's the foundation. But the Bible foundation is far stronger. The verses, the accounts, and the testimonies are all stuffed into Dick's book. And you won't even have half your armor on for the verbal battle until you buckle up your chin straps and read the truth. ... Read more

This important book provides a review of the Minnesota Model of alcoholism treatment, which combines current clinical treatments and the 12-step principles of Alcoholics Anonymous with the goal of abstinence. It critically examines the research base supporting cognitive behavior therapy approaches to alcoholism. Using evidence from biosociobehavioral science and critical analyses of alcoholism treatment outcome literature, the book rebuts the view of cognitive behavior therapists that alcoholism is nothing but a bad habit .

This book fills a vital need, describing which alcoholism treatments work and which do not. It is an invaluable guide to the helping professions caring for alcoholics, alcoholism counselors, social workers, nurses, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists as well as the intelligent layperson interested in alcoholism and its treatment. It also serves as a textbook for alcoholism courses and as an ancillary text for abnormal psychology courses.

Contents: A Biosociobehavioral Disease Conception of Alcoholism; Alcoholism Treatments and Mistreatments; What Makes Alcoholics Anonymous Work; Expectancy Theory and Research: Balderdash; Self-selection of Alcoholism Treatment Goals: Harm Reduction or Induction; Little Albert Redux II: Bias and Lack of Scholarship in Textbooks; Sociology of Science and Alcoholism Studies. ... "My name is Susan Powter and I'm an alcoholic". From the bestselling author of "Stop the Insanity!" comes an astonishing new audiobook that both tells her story of pain and recovery and offers a complete program for ending the perils and painful addiction of alcoholism. Simultaneous hardcover release from Simon & Schuster. 2 cassettes.Amazon.com Review
Alcoholics Anonymous has a 12 percent recovery rate, but what about theremaining 88 percent? "Waiting for the right time to quit, themotivation? Well, there is none," writes Susan Powter in hercharacteristically direct but chatty style. It's the Powter magic thatmakes accessible--even persuasive--what has been known in the fieldfor almost 40 years: alcoholism is a biochemical disease. If that'sthe case, Powter asks in Sober ... and Staying That Way, then whythe adamant belief that alcoholism is incurable? Powter's combinationof personal disclosure, exposé, and a program for lastingrecovery looks soberly at the biochemical and psychological componentsof alcoholism.

Powter's national prominence as a fitness expertand author of Stop theInsanity! made her disclosure all the more difficult. But it'swhen Prowter recollects her famous struggle with obesity, drawing fromthe lessons of goal setting and values searching, that Soberacquires credibility. There was not, she remembers, any instant cure, nor should there be for alcoholism. Recalling the discipline andself-education that preceded her dramatic weight loss, Powterdiscovered a vitamin-based nutrition program with an 80 percent recoveryrate.

Powter presents facts unforgetably: "Did you know thatalcohol is one of the richest foods known to man?... This stuff isamazing. It's got calories, it's a food, it gives you energy, but ... it's a food with only calories, nothing else.... Malnutrition. Youand I are malnourished." Smart and upbeat--a combination ofPowter's triumph over her ordeal with the biochemical andpsychological components of recovery--Sober ... and Staying ThatWay is like a 12-step personal trainer. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Sober.... with a purpose.
Sober.... And staying that way

Just as Susan composes herself on TV, she is the same way in her writing. Over the top and a bit edgy. In my opinion there are sections of the book that could have been cut. Now why am I supporting Lady Powter's Book? Because she cuts thru the bull of treating alcoholism. She freely exercises her freedom of speech; with her own style and trademark flair.

Susan Powter's attack is to actually TREAT alcoholism, as apposed to simply standing still and staying sober, calling someone in the middle of the night and constantly living one day at a time. Thru the author's eyes, you are able to see past that life threatening next drink. Incidentally, that next drink will not only bring you back to where you were when you last practiced your alcoholism, but you will find that your dis-ease has much advanced, perhaps even doubled. Dearheart, don't go there!

The foundation for her argument in treating alcoholism is laid down in a concrete detailing of nutrition. For instance: consuming sugary products to ease the cravings only keeps the cravings alive and creates the "dry drunks"

She brings power to the word "Surrender".

If that isn't enough, the haunting way she describes the terror that alcohol brings to the body's organs will leave you feeling sick. However biter her medicine may be, her humor adds a spoon full of sugar (pun intended) to help.
Sober...and Staying That Way : The Missing Link in The Cure for Alcoholism

1-0 out of 5 stars This may kill people who really need help...
...like me. I read this book back a few years ago when i was looking for ways to get and stay sober. I believed this book and spent a bunch of money on the nutritional supplements and went to an MD and a medical detox. Combined, I thought it would work. It didn't. Neither did the Reiki, the naltrexone, the hypnosis, or the affirmations, etc. Finally, three and a half years later, I have tried the only thing that actually works for someone like me who has the disease of alcoholism rather than just a condition of alcohol dependence, which may be what Susan had.

For those with alcohol dependence, but not the disease of alcoholism (there's a subtle difference in ways to tell which you have, but a huge difference in how to treat it), this method may well work. But, for those with true alcoholism, there really does need to be intervention from a higher power to overcome it. The reason AA has such a low success rate is because a person has to choose and adhere to the lifestyle, or the disease creeps back up. The very nature of the disease itself makes this choice very difficult to make and then adhere to. But, if the directions are followed, success is assured.

However, psychology and nutritional supplementation will not cure or even bring into remission, the disease of alcoholism. Nutritional supplementation can definitely help bring the body back into decent shape after abstinence, but cure alcoholism? I really doubt it. Believe me, an alcoholic will try everything under the sun to fix their problem to avoid doing the one true thing that will actually work, the 12 steps. And, if they make it through all those scenarios alive, hopefully then they'll make it to a 12-step program. Because if you have this disease, nothing else works. If you have what looks like alcoholism but isn't (and is merely alcohol dependence), then this program may well work. Just please, please, please don't fool yourself into thinking this will work if you have the real deal.

I just hope Susan is still sober, whether she's using the method in her book, or a 12-step program.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stupid, self-serving, dangerous
12% success rate? Defined by whom? No reliable statistics exist on this point. After her own alcoholism got beyond deniability, Powter dried out and got back on the self-promotion bandwagon, her grandiosity and dangerous ignorance unchanged.

Her advice on nutrition is just another rehash of the crazy, paranoid/conspiracy minded quackery of con artists like Adele Davis and Gary Null. Please check out Dr. Barrett's comments on these two at http://quackwatch.com

I Ms Powter's looney advice has an 80% success rate, where is her Nobel Prize? And for that matter, where is she? Did the secret cabal of 'powerful lobbyists' assassinate her?

Take a walk, eat real food sensibly, go to AA, take what you need, leave the rest. The "AA" described by quacks like Powter is a straw man. Real people can and do get and stay sober without lining the pockets of creeps like this woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars She's smart & funny and offers a lot of good advice
I read it cover to cover in one sitting and then passed it on to the person I had purchased it for. Then I bought another copy for someone else.I'm just trying to understand this desease and the size of this beast, and the horrible things it's done to people I care about. She got me a long ways toward that understanding.Fault it any way you want, by and large it was a good read, good life skills, good common sense. It was a good kick in the [rear] and I hope everyone I share it with gets as much out of it as I did.It may not be the only answer, but she moves you forward in the right direction, and hopefully healthier and better able to tackle this monster.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's good...Even for men
I know this may sound weird in light of the fact that Powter has been labeled fem-nazi and the like, but she has a new male convert in me due to the Sober and Staying That Way.It completely changed my view of her. I read the book non-stop from front to back.I immediately identified with the sugar/caffeine cravings whenever I tried to stop drinking.I knew/know from personal experience that eating/being healthy really helps me not drink. And I readily identified with her observations about current recovery programs.I was in some shock over the connections she makes between the government and big business, but that was naive on my part. This book really simulated a response from me on many levels. It may have saved my life and possibly my marriage. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Interesting Read!
This is the only book I've come across that talks about homeopathic, Chinese and ayurvedic herbal folk remedies to drink less and treat problem drinking. It looks at vitamins and lifestyle too.It really focuses on preventing alcohol craving, because if you can reduce craving, you can reduce drinking. And it encourages a healthy, balanced lifestyle - something that a lot of alcohol abuse programs overlook.

I've come across a couple of other books that talk about vitamins and prescription drugs as a cure for problem drinking. But no other book so thoroughly explores traditional folk medicines that have been around for centuries and work!I recommend this book to anyone interested in drinking less or herbal medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alternative medicine works for alcohol abuse
And this book proves it.Finally someone has let the cat out of the bag that alternative medicine has been used for centuries to conquer alcohol craving and alcohol abuse.
I'm happy drinkers have more options with this book. Now, in addition to cutting down or stopping, they can get a little extra help with the herbs and supplements in this book.Every drinker should own this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book sends an important message . . .
that message is we have to start thinking out of the box when it comes to
alcohol abuse treatment. i gave this book to a friend of mine who has a
drinking problem but was dead against stopping or going to AA. he was
receptive to this book because it gave him some organic alternatives to
drinking less. in other words it got him started doing something about
his drinking.

some people just need a little shove to do something about their drinking
and this book provided that little shove.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Cuts Alcohol Cravings Without Prescriptions!
I am so happy I came across this book at amazon. It's the only book I've
found that talks about how other alternative medicines and other cultures
view alcohol abuse and how to treat it. I was thinking about getting
prescription medication to cut the desire to drink but after reading this
I don't need to.There are lots of herbs to do that at the natural food
store.I've read Cornett's other book, 7 Weeks to Safe Social Drinking:
How to Effectively Moderate Your Alcohol Intake, and she always covers
interesting things.

For me the vitamin and supplement part was the best.It talks about things
you can buy over the counter to cut craving. The Chinese and Ayurveda
medicine parts were really interesting too.

I realize this is only one take on problem drinking. But if you take these
suggestions in the book, along with her program in her other book to
improve your drinking habits you can cut craving and consumption without

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Why hasn't anyone written about this before?
I'm a drinker who has struggled on and off with booze for years and I'm ecstatic someone has finally written about a more organic approach to problem drinking. This book gave me a different perspective.I was especially interested in how chinese and ayurvedic medicine treat drinkers and the concept of "balancing" my life so booze becomes less important and I drink less.

Product Description

Stress management: practical exercises and meditations important to relapse prevention. Spiritual needs: tips on nurturing a spiritual foundation. Social support: how to foster relationships and the new definition of family. Making the most out of health care: what people in recovery should demand—from their health care provider, and how to make sure it’s covered. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book has helped me tremendously! It has taught me things I was not aware of and also reminded me of things I had forgotten.I am very surprised it has helped me so much because I have been sober for 31 years.I found myself relaxing, as I read this book, simply by practicing the relaxing techniques I was reading about.I'll make these techniques a part of my daily life.I would recommend this book for anyone who is serious about their recovery.
