Product Description

Alzheimer’s disease is among the leading causes of death in the United States. Although scientists have identified how the disease works it is still a mystery why the disease is increasing at such alarming rates. Medical science does not yet have the answer to many questions on the disease, so author Sheila Robertson turned to the Bible for guidance. In Alzheimer’s…There Is Hope she uses her research to explain who is at risk for Alzheimer’s disease, the three major symptoms of the disease, the biblical perspective on Alzheimer’s symptoms, and how you can find healing and hope.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alzheimer's Disease - A Spiritual Battle
Sheila Robertson provides Biblical insight into the debilitating impact on the brain of Alzheimer victims in her book "Alzheimer's - There is Hope." She explores the four questions: Who is at risk for the disease? What are the three major symptoms of the disease? What is the Biblical perspective on Alzheimer's symptoms? And, how can victims find healing and hope?

Robertson discusses the impact of fear on individuals and the corresponding relationship of this as an influence on the resultant propensity for developing the dread Alzheimer's disease. She concludes that pursuing the Lord and clinging to his promises offer hope and healing.

For the reader already diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease Robertson provides scripture which gives evidence that it is God's perfect will that His children be healed of their affliction and disease. She then shows the importance of putting on the whole armor of God daily, recognizing that we are all in a spiritual battle. Issues of forgiveness, forgiving others, claiming our own forgiveness, becoming saturated in the Word of God, and confessing sin, as well as discovering unconfessed sin from the past as steps that can and should be taken. She also provides a prayer for healing as a guideline for claiming healing, binding Satan, and encouragement for supplication in prayer for family members plagued by the effects of the disease.

Robertson's writing is thought provoking, her message powerful.
"Alzheimer's - There is Hope" is a concise look at this dread disease in light of a Biblical perspective. It is a reminder of the importance of girding ourselves in the armor of Christ, in an affront to Satan's unrelenting attack on gaining control of our minds in an effort to make us powerless in living for Christ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Insights; Understand Why; Hope For the Future
Buy at least 2 copies of this book -- it's a book you'll want to keep and give away, too.

In fact, order at least 10 copies (the price is great!) if you're a pastor, elder, deacon, or other church leader ... of if you have contact with seniors in any walk of life.If you don't know anyone affected by Alzheimer's, buy the book.I believe it's so good that God will send you across the path of people who need it. The book is balanced, filled with wisdom and insight, easy-to-read, encouraging, practical, and helpful.

Based on solid research, the book presents hope for healing but provides so much more than just a "healing viewpoint".It will help you understand this disease, but take you beyond the experts to the Bible! The author succinctly summarizes relevant research and then adds in a good dose of Bible wisdom -- plus her own new and powerful insights that come from putting together research, common sense, and the Scriptures.,

The chapter, "A Sound Mind", is worth the whole book. Its explanation of why this generation of older people has experienced a 9,000% increase in Alzheimer's, weaves together solid Bible exposition, quality research, and enlightened reasoning>It left me astounded and saying, "Why didn't I think of that" and "WHY HASN'T ANYONE ELSE (that I know of) thought of that?!"

The author's new and ground-breaking conclusions about this disease are supported by both research and a solid Biblical understanding. She combines the research with her conclusions and the Bible, in a concise but more-than-adequate way.

If you have a charismatic or pentecostal approach to the Bible and healing, you will not be disappointed.

But if you don't, this book still will speak powerfully to you because of its insight and balance. Those who might disagree with the author on issues such as "healing in the atonement", should still buy this book because it's not written to expound a particular doctrine but to address a ravaging disease from a Biblical viewpoint.

It's a book that ought to be in the home of every person who believes the Bible -- there's that much good in it, there's that much Scriptural hope and help in it, there's that much solid and wise reasoning in it.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, get the book NOW and read the last chapter first. It will give you some practical helps on how to begin praying and thinking. If you believe that it's God's perfect will for us to live in healing and health (the author does), you'll be right at home as you read.If you believe differently (or aren't sure what you believe!), please don't let that keep you from getting this book. You will gain much from it, whatever your doctrinal perspective -- plus,it never hurts to be challenged by different understandings of what the Bible says on issues like healing!

Could your current lifestyle be increasing your risk for Alzheimer's?You'll know the answer to that question by the time you finish this book. And you'll know the answer quickly, since the book is only 54 pages ... easily readable and quickly understood -- even by those new to the Bible.

Don't let the short number of pages in this book fool you.As a pastor, I found much help in it -- and I've been studying the Bible all my life.I found insight that I had never before considered.

There is much we don't know about this disease and about God's healing. The author humbly acknowledges the "mystery" of healing and deals with it in a way that will encourage you, whatever you believe about it. Even if you don't believe the Bible, this book will still help you because of the insight it gives about Alzheimer's and why it has attacked so many people.

This book makes a powerful contribution to understanding a disease where much understanding and wisdom is badly needed.

Buy it now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
The book was very poetic while I was looking for information; however I found the information scattered about, and I was able to convert the poetic parts to my own experience and way of thinking. I found those parts to be useful also in shaping my attitudes toward helping my husband. The ordering and shipping service was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
Beautifully written. This book is a gift filled with insight, whether you have been touched by Alzheimer's disease or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Love Story
This really is the story of a journey, told in a way that makes it a gripping story, much like a novel. Harrison Hoblitzelle, known as Hob, is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease as we begin. His wife tells the tale, but shares a great deal in his words of what he was experiencing. Both are teachers and practitioners of Buddhist philosophy and meditation, as well as fans of great literature. The book is laced with famous quotations, guided meditations and visits to spiritual leaders for help dealing with what is happening. Hob hangs on as well as he can, but the disease erodes his memory and his ability to speak. Often he considers suicide to avoid the late stages. Olivia shares her own struggles to live in the moment and to give Hob all the help he needs without losing herself. Hob does die in the end. The reader knows that from the beginning. The question is how it will happen. This is a beautiful book, very comforting to those living with the disease, and loaded with helpful exercises and resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compassionate, empathetic and extraordinarily helpful
Better late than never! I would have been so very, very grateful if I had read this book before I lost my best friend, my son, and my husband, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease for 35 years. Olivia, a childhood friend of mine, artfully and sensitively carries her readers through the difficult journey of illness and death from the perspective of the patient as well as the caregiver. She gives her readers the courage and insight to go where most of us fear to tread.I have shared this book with others, all of whom are as grateful as I am. Thank you, Olivia.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beam of light in the darkness
As someone who is currently traversing the dark and difficult territory of a loved one's struggle with Alzheimer's, I can't say enough about this brave, honest, and illuminating book.Without ever being sentimental, it offers a very profound form of consolation, encouraging us simultaneously to bring as much clarity as we can to the process of the mind's disintegration/while remembering that what we most truly are is something that transcends the organic gray matter of the brain. After receiving a copy of the book myself, I ordered copies for two friends whose husbands are facing early-onset Alzheimers. And I also made reference to it in an upcoming article ("Awake and Demented") for Tricycle Magazine.
I am profoundly grateful to Olivia H.--not to speak of her late husband Hob--for this beautiful and inspiring book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the subject of Alzheimer's
I originally took this book out of the library but quickly decided that it was one I wanted to own. The book is honest and informative and I was even blessed enough to get an e-mail answer from the author when I had a question. As much as I pray for a cure, this guide has proved very helpful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Your Doctor May Not Have Told You About Alzheimer's
This is a very practical book and gives HOPE. While it is a bit dated--written in 2004, it still is full of great ideas. It offers great alternative approaches as well and is written by a doctor with a heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alzheimer Information
A good book to add to your library on Alzheimer's disease. When my mother was diagnosed with this desaese we needed information and this book was one of the many excellent resources we found.

5-0 out of 5 stars What the Doctor May Not Tell You About Alzheimer's Disease
I'm trained as a counselor specializing in elder care, so I read a lot of books about different mental and physical problems that effect older people. This book is one of the best for its positive approach, concrete, simple suggestions and thorough treatment of the subject of this disease doctors still don't really understand.

Recently I ordered a copy for my aunt who suffers from Alzheimer's Disease. Since she lives alone, she doesn't remember receiving the copy or where it is. So, thanks to Amazon and the ease of ordering, I ordered her two more copies! She's looking forward to receiving one at least.

I think this book is now out of print as I've been ordering used copies. Too bad. The only thing about this book that needs updating might be the medications now being used or the newest research. Otherwise, this book is the best for the person who suffers from this disease and all of the effected care givers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best practical information for caretakers
I have been a caretaker for my spouse who has had dementia for 3 years.I have read many books and this is definitely the best.It is clearly written. It does not scream directions and diagnosis at you from but has a practical and compassionate tone that allows me to read without becoming stressed. It gives symptoms that I have seen first hand but hadn't read about in any other source.I highly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
I got this book (Volume 1) to use with my father who has Alzheimer's and is pretty confused most of the time. He really enjoyed the "under the hood" activity and the song titles. All the activities were very easy to follow. I did make some of them easier for my Dad as they show you how to do at the front of the book. I learned a few things about my Dad I didn't know before. The best part was when he would remember something and I could tell it was a pleasant memory so that made me feel good.I would definitely recommend this book if you have someone with memory problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!!
Great book.easy to read. Great ideas and also helps me come up with more of my own. Love the fact that it's wire bound as it makes it easier to flip and keep the page open where you want it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for caregivers to use with a person who has Alzheimers
This book has been, hands down, the best investment I've made in an Alzheimer's activity book. I'm always looking for new activities to do with my Mom who has Alzheimer's and this is one book I've found that makes good on its promises. It's been nothing short of amazing how easily I have been able to keep my Mom's attention and get her talking. Wish I'd had it sooner. The author talks about how each activity can be tailored to virtually ensure success. I tried it and it really does work!I highly recommend this book to others who have a loved one with Alzheimers, especially if it's becoming harder to carry on a meaningful conversation with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars My review of a great book.
Sunshine and Joy's Big Book of Alzheimer's Activities by Jill Hernandez is a great book.

The poem in the beginning of the book by John Kendrick Bangs from the Word makes a wonderful statement and introduction to the contents of this amazing book.

The variety of activities put together by the author is more than anyone working in a facility or having a loved one at home could possibly hope for.

The author's special way of referring to persons with Alzheimer's throughout the book is gentle and refreshing.

Each activity in this book has been thoughtfully planned out. My years of working as a therapeutic activities director would have been made easier had there been books of this caliber available.

Thanks Jill for a book from the heart and your love of a special "PAL". C. Gale Perkins

5-0 out of 5 stars Honesty, Help, and Humor
This book helped me to understand and appreciate the huge responsibility that has been taken on by a family member who is caring for her mother with Alzheimer's. I appreciated the honesty about the caregiver's role and the disease process. I also thought that the caregiver suggestions and guidance were ingenious. PLUS I really appreciated the humor. It was so nice to be able to feel, learn, AND smile. My favorite part of the book was when she was talking about how her mother didn't want to be confrontational so she would talk ABOUT the caregiver to Poky the cat. The thing was, the caregiver was still right there! How does one respond to that? I mean afterall, she wasn't talking to her was she? She was talking to the cat. :-) Thanks for writing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nourishment for the soul
Although I am not an Alheimter's caregiver, I read this book seeking understanding for loved ones who are.Born offers a window into both her Mother's and her own life as both learn to live in their world made unique by Alzheimer's.She shares honestly about facing the lions ~ sometimes giggling as their threatening growls turn to head-twisting looks of confusion ~ while gazing steadfastly heavenward for guidance and encouragement. Her mother's own words make it clear one living with this disease continues to have meaningful thoughts and wise insights, mixed with what I had thought of as typical Alheimer's eccentricities.I would recommend this book to any who wish to learn more about living life to it's fullest in the face of adversity ~ whether Alzheimer's Disease or other life-changing circumstances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
This is such an inspirational, faith-filled book.Alzheimer's disease often brings despair and sorrow, but this book beautifully expresses how there can be hope (and sometimes humor) on the journey of caregiving. One aspect that sets this book apart from other texts on Alzheimer's disease is that it includes writings from the Alzheimer patient.Five years into her journey through Alzheimer's disease, the author's mother continues to record her perceptions of the world and her prayers to God.These touching and intriguing snippets are included throughout the text.I highly recommend this book, not only to caregivers but to anyone who wants their faith strengthened and their spirits revived! ... Jolene Brackey has a vision. A vision that will soon look beyond the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and focus more of our energy on creating moments of joy. When a person has short-term memory loss, his life is made up of moments. But if you think about it, our memory is made up of moments, too. We are not able to create a perfectly wonderful day with someone who has dementia, but it is absolutely attainable to create a perfectly wonderful moment; a moment that puts a smile on their face, a twinkle in their eye, or triggers a memory. Five minutes later, they won’t remember what you did or said, but the feeling you left them with will linger.

Brackey has broken down the learning process into the five sections of the expanded third edition of Creating Moments of Joy for the Person with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. I've used her ideas and had amazing success in my job. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to appreciate people with dementia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Wisdom, Memories That Heal
This is an incredibly rich testament to the power of the human spirit, and the patient love involved in living with and caring for someone very dear who suffers from progressive dementia. As both a hospice nurse and the son of a sweet mother who recently died after many small strokes causing dementia, I am grateful for the honesty and beauty of these many poems and Tess Gallagher's very moving Foreward. Very highly recommended -- but sometimes some tough stuff in here!

5-0 out of 5 stars So glad to find this!

I am living with and caring for my 92 year old mother who now has almost no short term memory. This collection of writings from people who have experienced this difficult journey is a gift that heals, encourages, teaches, and supports my efforts to give my failing mother comfort and joy during this difficult time.I love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alzheimer's Inspires Observant Loved Ones
Alzheimer's steals brains. It destroys its victims and isolates their caregivers. Holly J. Hughes's Beyond Forgetting: Poetry and Prose about Alzheimer's Disease shares the writings of 100 contemporary authors who have personal experience with the disease. These nurses, doctors, social workers, sons, daughters, and spouses take the reader "beyond forgetting" and into unexpected discoveries. Hughes's book would have given me a community when I thought my mother was dying one cell at a time--two years before she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

The poems and prose tell stories of hope, love, loss, fear, bewilderment, desperation, amazement, amusement, delight and more. Each piece captures a specific memory and reflects on the impact of that moment on the patient, the caregiver, and the relationship. Candace Pearson writes about loss of language in "Another Country." Len Roberts recalls his aunt's hilarious antics in "My Uncle Chauncey drove my Aunt Eleanor." Nancy Dahlberg gives us love and role reversal in "We All Fall Down." Sybil Lockhart rediscovers her mother's physical beauty in "Naked." Donna Wahlert shares the acceptance that Alzheimer's brought her in "Late Middle Alzheimer's Disease."

The experiences of these spouses, daughters, sons, doctors, nurses, and caregivers touch on nearly every emotion imaginable. The authors have been transformed by their experiences. Readers will be transformed too. Caregivers will identify. Former caregivers will remember. Prospective caregivers will get a glimpse into the joy and beauty that often emerges from pain. This inspiring book reads like a 100 snippets of memoir.

Each author's brief personal story, found in italics at the end of the piece, adds a layer of context that strengthens the message. They added a level of humanity and grace that is important for other caregivers to witness.

Throughout, the writing is clear, heart-felt, multi-layered, and reflective. It embraced me and made me proud of my time as my mother's caregiver.

Kudos to editor Holly J. Hughes for her concept; to Tess Gallagher, who wrote the foreword; and to the women and men who shared their stories, perceptions, and memories in Beyond Forgetting: Poetry and Prose about Alzheimer's Disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Sharing in a Much Needed Book
Holly Hughes has done the work for us, gathering the writing of others who name and describe the struggle and, yes, rewards of dealing with Alzheimer's Disease. As we learn in the Preface, her inspiration came close to home as she dealt with her mother, as did Tess Gallagher who provides the beautiful Foreword to the book. So many writers have dealt with this from the inside and here share their own stories. In poem after poem, they witness the confusing struggle to care well for loved ones and keep a dignity of person for both the cared for and the caregiver. In a book that is 90% poetry, I find the prose section titled "Missing Pieces" powerful as in Sarah Levitt's "Kaddish" where she wishes for a prayer to say not at the final death of the person, but each day with the small deaths of memory. Hughes has chosen to request and print a personal "note" from each writer at the end of their piece, which though reductive of the writing itself, extend the circle of caring. I thank her and Kent State University Press for having the foresight to publish a book for our times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small, artful glimpses into the world of Alzheimer's Disease
This anthology includes pieces written and shared by (and for) individuals living with (or worried about developing) Alzheimer's, as well as works by and for the caretaking sons and daughters, spouses/partners, members of the medical community, siblings and others who have been touched by the disease. As you would hope, it is by turns sad, joyful, wrenching, appreciative, frustrating and familiar yet wondrous--and always illuminating. Another thing that I like about this particular collection is that although I'm sure that a full read-through from start to finish is most meaningful, even we non-poets can pick it up and open it at random to be rewarded with small glimpses--and sometimes a wide-angled "heartfull"--of the world of this disease from many, many different perspectives. You won't forget this one.I am glad to have read it and to feel a certain connection to the community of contributors, having lived some of their stories myself. ... Read more
