5-0 out of 5 stars Joy also comes in the morning
Waiting for the Morning is a wonderfully written journal by Brenda Parris Sibley. If you want to know what Alzheimer's disease is all about, this is a must read book! From the very beginning, when Brenda returns home to care for her mom, we can feel the constant roller coaster ride as she tells of her experiences. Brenda expresses her thoughts and emotions so well that you feel as if you are also right there! Her book clearly shows the love she had for her mother and the guilt which overtakes her as she cannot stop this dreaded disease. Her thoughts and feelings teach us to treasure each moment as a caregiver and the blessings that come with it. She also shows us that there is life after caregiving ends and we gradually find our way back into the world. Her poems are beautiful and the pictures make you feel as if you always knew her mom. There are many references for suggested reading, so together with her story, anyone who reads Waiting For The Morning will come away much richer and blessed!

5-0 out of 5 stars SACRIFICIAL LOVE
`Waiting for the Morning' accurately and honestly depicts the decline of Alzheimer's disease, each and every stage, along with the devastation imparted unto the caregiver in the process. Brenda's guilt emanates throughout: `You pleaded with me to come home, so I did. Mama's baby came home, but you don't know me. I'm too late - Alzheimer's came first.' She blames herself for the natural progression of this hideous disease; while at the same time the reader is so acutely aware of her undying love for this woman who raised her. Brenda's pain is also evident: `This is the hardest thing about Alzheimer's. Whenever she remembers that she has a daughter by my name, she worries about her - not understanding that I've been right here with her all along.' This part hit me hardest: the utter loss of her mother's awareness before her body left.

Each chapter tells the tragic story of a woman whose mind is breaking; whose switches are shutting down, one by one; and of the daughter whose unswerving commitment bears the brunt and the blame for everything which happens. Brenda's book is truly about exactly what she says in the beginning `Learn from my mistakes; know that you are not alone; and most of all, cherish the time you have left with your loved one'. These words come from great wisdom, borne out of harsh experience and unfailing love; calling out to those who follow behind her in their own journeys. If you want to know the truth, read this book. Within its covers, the `way in the wilderness' will become obvious to you. Brenda lived it - with her heart's intent being that you might be spared and enlightened as a result of the words which she penned.

5-0 out of 5 stars A profound, personal testimony
Waiting For The Morning: A Mother And Daughter's Journey Through Alzheimer's Disease is a profound, personal testimony. Author Brenda Parris Sibly presents her poetry, caregiving journal, helpful advice for those who are struggling to adapt to caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's. Waiting For The Morning is sensitive, thoughtful, occasionally inspiring, and always highly recommended reading. Parting Thoughts: I didn't fix things/by being here,/and more of my trying/brought you much cheer./The flowers I planted/will be a mockery/if they bloom again/without you to see./There'll be no more Christmas--/no holidays again--/for you were everything/in my Christmas plans./I feel a cold chill/all the way to my soul,/but Mama, please know,/that I love you so.

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't wait for morning...
.
..wanted to be the first to review this book!

I was probably among the first visitors to Brenda Parris Sibley's web site, "A Year to Remember...with My Mother and Alzheimer's Disease," back in 1996. I had a special interest in Alzheimer's, because our family had just come through our own care-giving journey. Our grandmother, who we cared for in our home for seven years, had died in May of '96 a little over a month after Brenda's mother passed away. I visited her site many, many times over the next few years.
I thought it was wonderful!

I have just finished reading "Waiting for the Morning" and it has touched me in a way I honestly did not think it could. As far as caring for an Alzheimer's victim, I've experienced it all. All the emotions; the guilt of not being patient enough, the longing to bring this person back, for just a little longer, that feeling of being "in control" one day, and in the depths the next, not knowing how I would survive another minute. Yet, while reading Brenda's journal I found myself snickering, remembering the silly moments, and holding back tears recalling the heartache. I was right there in that little house with her, loving her Mom and feeling the emotion of every stage of this cruel disease. For some reason it was a good feeling.
Maybe like surviving a battle and feeling camaraderie with a fellow soldier.

How I would have loved to read this book while I was caring for "Gram"!
Brenda is learning as she goes along, trying different things to make her Mom comfortable, recording it all in her journal. She shares information she has read, and tries to figure out the things that seem to cause her mother's agitation so she can avoid them. It is very informative, and I believe would be a very comforting support to any caregiver. Just to see that what they are experiencing with their loved one, although so very difficult, is not unusual and that the resulting emotions they feel are normal as well.

But I now realize-even more than before- that Brenda and I were "in the trenches" at the very same time, learning and failing; but coming through it with stories that will hopefully make the way just a little more comforting to those going through it now.

....And the poetry!
Brenda's poetry is so wonderfully honest and touching. I am filling up with tears just thinking about it. It is really special.

It was very moving to read of Brenda's grief, and how she worked through it. Isn't it amazing that this very difficult and life changing experience has resulted in the development of the web-site that many would consider the "hub" of all the Alzheimer's care giving sites?
What a wonderful memorial to her Mom, and a victorious overcoming of such a difficult experience.

.......Thank you Brenda for all of your efforts!

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough, insightful, and timeless guide
This excellent and comprehensive guide had stood the test of time. I used it and referred to it when it was first published and I continue to refer people to this book as the only source you really need when creating and conducting support groups for people with early-stage Alzheimer's or a related disorder. Even experienced professionals and support group facilitators can glean valuable information from this book, and it can be referred to as needed for creative ideas, problem solving, and insightful reminders. I consider it a must have reference on the library shelf of anyone working in the field of early-stage dementia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Manual!
Anyone planning to start a group for people with dementia should read this.Ms. Yale is an expert & this book is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive "how-to" book -PT. Advocacy PLUS!!
Ms. Yale has taken a difficult subject...difficultissues regardingpatients who are headed into difficult situations...and not only madestrong advocacy in their behalf but has created a primer of how to doit.

I am about to start an Alzheimer's Support Group for patients in theearly stages. While I was pleased that I was chosen by our localAlzheimer's Association; I was somewhat paralyzed at first by how to do it.

This is from someone who has done psychotherapy with individuals, families and groups for over fourteen years. The focus of most Alzheimer'sDisease care has been support for the caregiver.I must admit I couldn'tthink about doing a suport group for patients until some recentinterchanges with patients about their driving...or not driving.

Ofcourse, I can lead a group of people with early stages of Alzheimer'sDisease.I interview these people in my clinic all the time and have notrouble there.

Robyn Yale has given me a template.I intend to use asmuch information of this book as I possibly can.

Thanks to Amazon, I hadthe book in three days of finding the reference. ... Read more

Product Description
Working from the intriguing hypothesis that Alzheimer's dementia is the result of a renegade protein-beta amyloid-Tanzi and others set out to find the gene responsible for its production. Decoding Darkness takes us deep into the minds and far-flung labs of many a prominent researcher, offering an intimate view of the high stakes of molecular genetics, the revolution that propels it, the obstacles that threaten to derail it, and the families whose lives are so dependent upon it. Tanzi and Parson ultimately reveal that Alzheimer's, like heart disease, may be effectively treated-even prevented.Amazon.com Review
Alzheimer's disease, a fatal, annihilating brain disorder, affects millions of men and women around the world. In the UnitedStates alone, perhaps one in five persons aged 75 or older suffersfrom it, though hundreds of thousands of younger people also bear thecondition.

Despite its ubiquity, the malady was, until recently, considered a"backwater disease" to which little research attention (and funding)was paid. Advances in gene research, some spearheaded by neurologistRudolph Tanzi, have led to a new understanding of the causes ofAlzheimer's disease, and new possibilities for its cure. In thiswell-written account of that research, Tanzi and journalist-co-authorAnn Parson examine the role of amyloid neuritic plaque, "mucked-up,misfolded protein that fibrilizes and forms rock-hard aggregates thatthe body can't get rid of." This plaque occurs in humans and certainother carnivorous species (including bears and dogs), and it appearsto play a role in neurologic disorders of several kinds. Tanzi reportson recent studies in the use of cholesterol-reducing drugs inlessening levels of "brain dirt," as well as on research that suggeststhat cardiovascular exercise and a diet low in animal fats can benefitthe brain as well as the body. He even cautiously hints that theconquest of Alzheimer's may occur in the very near future. For thetime being, his book provides a thoughtful portrait of the illness andof the scholars and scientists who have devoted their lives tocombating it.--Gregory McNamee ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Tanzi's exhaustive search
I am lucky enough to be the son of a scientist who works with Mr. Tanzi, and I can tell you that you will not find many scientists who are as passionate about their work as Mr. Tanzi. His search for the cure for Alzheimers has been hard and tiring, but somehow Rudy came through. I am only a 14 year old, and I know I want to be a scientist when I grow up because of the work of both my father and Mr. Tanzi. They both teamed up from the beginning to create a better world for people devestated with these diseases, and hopefully in the future there will be a cure for these diseases which plague humanity. This book is inspirational for anyone who wants to know that the future has in store some good for mankind, and even though my opinion is not weighed very heavily against men and women who have read this book, I will tell you anyway that this book is an unbelievable look into the world of Alzheimers. If you were to read one book about the disease, read Mr. Tanzi's, for it is good for all levels of knowledge about the disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Reading
Tanzi and Parson tell a fascinating story of medical discovery with great excitement and clarity. The science was not sugar coated, but was very clearly explained and written in a very literary and often amusing manner. The descriptions of the human genome project in this book were in many ways superior to those that have appeared in books prepared specifically on the topic. My interest in this book was prompted not so much from an interest in Alzheimers disease but originally came from a recommendation from a friend who actively reads books about the human genome revolution and gene research. After reading the book, I would definitely agree with her opinion that no other book in the genre explains the goals behind the human genome project (and especially how they relate to disease based research) as well as "Decoding Darkness". Also, the story of the family with inherited Alzheimers that runs parallel with the main story about the research was quite touching and provided a very nice break the excitement and hustle and bustle of the research discoveries described. Overall, I would have to say this is one of the best science genre books I have ever read...maybe the best after "The Double Helix". HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great achievement in science writing...
An excelllent book! Science writing at it best with definitive information on the causes of Alzheimer's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Crafted, Informative Read
Ann Parson and Dr. Tanzi have put together an increadibly insightful, sensitive, and ultimately courageous portrait of the war that is being waged against this insiduous thief of conciousness. With crusaders such as Dr.Tanzi at the forefront of research to cure this disease, and gifted scribes such as Ann Parson, I feel as though I have a front row seat to an unfolding medical miracle. Kudos to Ann Parson for this superb, thought provoking work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read, Although a Bit Technical
I found this book to be extremely intersting. In it Dr. Tanzi follows both his career and the evolution of our knowledge concerning Alzheimer's Disease. He vividly describes the thrills and disappointments that come with research, all set within the context of trying to figure out what is the cause and some possible treatments of Alzheimer's.Tanzi guides the reader through the technical aspects of what is known about the disease and what has yet to be discovered.I think that most people would enjoy it, although the reader must be aware that there are some more technical aspects to his discussion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LOOKING AT ALZHEIMER'S AS A CAREGIVER
"Old Timers" should be on the suggested reading list for anyone seeking information about Alzheimer's disease and all of its ramifications for the family of the victim. NO ONE knows like someone who had been there and that is certainly Jack Turley. It is an easy read that pulls at the heart strings.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Shared Journey
I received a copy of Mr. Turley's book from my cousin. It was sent to me since my mother is on her journey into dementia.Even though she has not been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, many of her symptoms are similar. At the time I read Mr. Turley's book, I was feeling very isolated, confused and frustrated.I did not need a factual rendition of what I was facing.I needed a personal connection. After reading Mr. Turley's book, I no longer felt as if I was the only person dealing with the overwhelming emotions associated with watching a loved one sink into dementia. My feelings of guilt were greatly alleviated, just by sharing what Mr. Turley had gone through.I found many of the decisions he had to make were similar to ones I was in the process of having to make.I also appreciated having a book that was honest, straightforward and did not hedge on the turmoil involved with the caregiver. What I appreciated most, was his underlying theme that his life continued but with the added burdens. That is the most important message one can send. Those of us that have to stand and watch still have to continue with what we do.We cannot become consumed with our loved ones decline. That is also the hardest aspect of dementia with which to deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars YES! He REALLY understands!
OLD TIMERS is a compelling story, brutally honest, written with occasional humor and dedicated love.I found I consistently nodded my head in agreement and thought, "YES! He REALLY understands!"I sent OLD TIMERS to my cousin. She is going through absolute misery with her mother who lives in a different state and has Alzheimer's Disease. My cousin was depressed and didn't want to read the book.Having just returned from a visit, she was VERY tired and "had ENOUGH of the subject."But, she DID read it and called to say that OLD TIMERS helped her so very much. She found out that others had problems and feelings similar to hers. Now my cousin does not feel so alone when she is dealing with difficult decisions and tender feelings.I highly recommend OLD TIMERS for church and community support discussion groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars A highly articulate personal commentary
Mr. Turley's superlative accounting of his mother's "One way journey into darkness" has struck a nerve. For I too watched as my own father left us as the result of this dreaded disease called Alzheimer's. Excellent informative reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight Forward-How It Is Approach To Alzheimer's
Jack Turley shared journey through heart felt intimate moments answered many questions and lessons in approaching the position of being a careprovider to a family member with alzheimer's.The sharing of his beloved mother suffering through many challenging issues and choices was extremely impactful to me being a careprovider for my parents and a psychoanalytic-dynamic psycotherapist in Los Angeles.I have recommended this book to my friends and clients and have received nothing but outstanding comments and a Warm-Thank You.This book contributions tremendously to the humanistic understanding of Alzheimer. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I am the primary care giver for my mother-in-law who lives in our home.I downloaded this book to my Kindle because thinking I would could get encouragement from someone who has walked in my shoes. The author writes about his feelings and resentments and ways that he is dealing with his wife caring for her mother. While I don't doubt his honesty and that he writes from his heart, I don't consider him a caregiver.I think this book is better suited for the spouse of a primary caregiver, not for the actual care giver.

There are many aspecs of caring for someone with Alzheimers that you can't imagine unless you are in that person's shoes. It is a very lonely situation for the actual caregiver.

I could not finish this book because I would get so angry that he was complaining about things that his wife was dealing with and how they affected him.It just seemed to me that this book is a "Woe is Me" kind of book.

I do recommend it for anyone who is related to a caregiver...I am sure my husband can identify with this author, but I can't.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare and honest look from a male caregiver's point of view
After Alzheimer's struck his mother, sister, and mother-in-law, author and caregiver, Joseph Skillin writes in Confessions of a Caregiver, that he struggles with the "daily-ness" of the presence of Alzheimer's in his home.

He writes, "Anyone can rise to the need of taking care of a sick parent. But it takes courage, endurance, constancy, perseverance, and heroism to commit to daily care without any end in sight."

While he admires his wife's loving care for her mom in their home, he confesses his feelings of unease with the burden on his family.

IRRITATED BY THE LITTLE THINGS
Skillin finds he can't stop focusing on "the little things" that irritate him day after day. He admits it doesn't make sense to let these things bother him, but they do-such as when his mother-in-law turns up the volume on the television, doesn't push in her chair when leaving the table, or never shows appreciation with a "Thank you."

Yet, while his wife, Penny, serves as the primary caregiver for her mom, Skillin finds ways to help and ease Penny's burden by taking on a greater share of the household chores.

PRAYING
One of two unique qualities of Confessions is a prayer at the end of each chapter. These give us a deeper look into what matters to Skillin during his caregiving journey. At the end of the "How I Cope" chapter, Skillin begs God: Do not test my endurance. Give me a break.

GETTING AWAY FROM HOME
Skillin, who works outside the home as a marketing consultant, is thankful Penny allows him time away from home to cope with the burden. He advises caregivers to do the same in order to "reset your perspectives, rekindle your appreciations, and recharge your soul." He adds, "Step out of the house so you can step back in and step up to the challenges." This is great advice for all caregivers if even for five minutes.

WHAT I FEAR
The second unique quality of Confessions, among caregiving books, includes a chapter on "What I Fear." After seeing his mother, sister, and now mother-in-law live with Alzheimer's, he knowingly fears of being robbed of his being, of his "eventual lack of control," and of being "stuck in bed until someone comes and dresses" him. At the same time, he doesn't want to be a burden to his children who he believes have to live their own lives. He even outlines eight tips for them.

FINDING THE JOY
Despite the burdens of caregiving, Skillin does take time to find the joy with his mother-in-law. Whether it is laughing at the thought of a ninety-four year old woman walking down the street with an empty suitcase at three in the morning (she wanted to go home) or smiling at the thought of his mother-in-law sipping out of the empty envelop she insisted was her coffee cup.

WHAT MATTERS MORE
Skillin comes to the realization while witnessing one's dying that what matters less is success and competence and what matters more is significance and character.

He learns from his wife, Penny of the gifts of caregiving and why she sacrifices so much to lovingly tend to her mother. Among the reasons she gives is one that is important for all caregivers: To do the best we can so that after our loved ones are gone we have no regrets.

He wrote this book to help other caregivers and spouses of caregivers deal with the "emotional rollercoaster" of caregiving.

What Skillin accomplishes with Confessions of a Caregiver is a catharsis of sorts that gives caregivers the permission to feel negative feelings that come with the heroic burden of caregiving while stepping up to the caregiving role.

Highly recommend this book for all caregivers (not just those dealing with Alzheimer's), past, present and future. The emotions are not sugar coated, but real and honest. The prayers are a true blessing.A quick read, you'll want to keep it close when the cares of being a caregiver are overwhelming.
It's been five years since I helped with the care of my mother. The insight, honesty and compassion with which Mr. Skillen writes, allowed me to revisit the feelings I dealt with and put them in perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift from Mr. Skillin to you

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is caring for a elderly person at home or has the responsibility for someone in an assisted living facility. You will smile, you may cry, and you will be astonished that others are sharing your same emotions.Mr. Skillin has truly given a gift to caregivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars When Alzheimer's Comes to Your Home
Joe Skillin's "Confessions of a Caregiver" is a blessing to me.It comes at a difficult time, as my wife and I are faced with the caring for her sister, a 68 year-old retired school teacher, experiencing the onset of Alzheimer's disease.Living alone, her care has fallen to us and becomes more difficult with each day.Skillin's message, as he relates his experience with his mother-in-law and other family members, skillfully hits the mark on many levels and provides comfort in its sincerity.

One never knows or can plan for the overwhelming list of responsibilities, legal issues, stress and fatigue that accompany this degenerative disease as you watch a loved one move further away yet, paradoxically, need you more than ever.I highly recommend "Confessions of a Caregiver", as the author astutely describes the process and needs of the ill while drawing from his empathy for the caregiver as the burden spreads from the patient to those around them. This is a must read for all that need to understand how invasive Alzheimer's can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the Point and Helpful
I loved this book because it is very informative and very easy to read. Not too long or detailed, just straight to the point. I read this book in a very short time. It helps you know what to expect at each stage and gives you the knowledge to help defuse some of the behaviors association with Alzheimers. It also divides the information by the stages of Alzheimers, and is organized in a way that you can go back and easily refresh your memory of what you have read.
