Product Description
Through the voices of twenty-one women, Karen Way presents the most objective, complete, and compassionate picture of what anorexia nervosa is about and, more importantly, of the complex individual variables and obstacles in the journey to recovery. From the premise that anorexia nervosa is an addiction--an obsession controlling all aspects of an individual’s life--and that complete recovery is possible by finding meaning in life, this enlightening book contrasts sharply to other books written on the subject by clinicians and theorists which merely speculate on the nature and etiology of anorexia nervosa. Anorexia Nervosa and Recovery lets the reader hear the personal struggles of women who have fought this powerful disease. They describe how anorexia controlled their lives and how, once they overcame their obsessions with food, weight, and thinness, they were able to lead fulfilling lives.

This illuminating book encourages and inspires women who are in the throes of anorexia nervosa. They will recognize the emptiness in the voices and the descriptions of daily life. Therapists and clinicians who treat anorexic women will find intriguing chapters on events which trigger anorexia and what anorexics will do to maintain their strategies for coping. Concerned friends and family and others interested in understanding this controlling disease will be enlightened from this important and helpful book. ... Read more

Product Description
Early treatment literature on anorexia nervosa and bulimia reported almost exclusively on brief treatment approaches that entailed either psychopharmacological or cognitive-behavioral interventions. While this literature demonstrated that one-third of these patients were treatable with brief therapy and another one third showed improvement, the final one-third of these patients did not respond to brief interventions. Recent research indicates that this last group of patients may also suffer from significant personality disorders or Axis II co-morbidity. Considered difficult to treat, these patients require longer term, informed individual psychotherapy. Designed specifically to address the challenges of this difficult-to-treat population, this volume is the first to focus exclusively on exploring eating disorders from a psychodynamic perspective. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
Eating Disorders is a subject that is close, close to my heart. I am always in huge awe of anyone who has the courage to fight this disease and then to go on and share this heart-stopping experience with someone else and Katie Metcalfe has done just that in her excellent memoir Anorexia. As a addict, you discover a few realities pretty quickly - denial is huge and the other thing is that in order to survive and recover - you must give it away (or give back) to others so that you may stay in recovery.

Metcalfe has written touchingly about both subjects in her memoir and as I was reading Anorexia, I could see the progression (albeit slow at times) that Katie was making in discovering her inner truths and in keeping herself honest and on the path of recovery. Katie writes about her struggles with a touching hand and heart and does not shy away from sharing with us just harrowing and difficult her life was during her disease and yet, at the same time, she does not make useless excuses about how she got there or why she got there. Katie honestly opens up about "the voices" that she had to live with and how, at first, she let the voices "win" - but she soon discovers that there may another way - one that would permit her to be herself and to be at a happier place.

I could not read this book in only a few sittings as her entries are thought provoking and made me relive some of my own experiences - this book is to be read slowly - to be savored, analyzed and enjoyed.

Congratulations Katie! you are wonderful and my thoughts are always with you - to a fellow traveller as a friend of mine once called it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
This book was very good.I needed to read a book that would encourage me to continue to fight my eating disorder from a Christian perspective.I love the author's honesty that changing eating behaviors is and continues to be difficult for her, but it's worth the fight.I am reccomending this book to my friend who also struggles with an eating disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right to the Heart of It
After reading the reviews for this book, I felt compelled to write one for those of you considering the purchase of this book.

I agree with the comments that this book was very Christian in nature and if you are not a Christian then this book may not be the right approach for you to help you with your eating disorders. Also, if you do not have an eating disorder or are not struggling with low self esteem this book is not designed to help you understand friends or relatives who may have these problems. This book is designed to help Christians struggling with eating disorders.

As a strong Christian who has constantly battled low self esteem and continues to battle with bulimia and excessive dieting, this was the only thing that spoke to my heart and helped me see how destructive I was being. For me having a strong family support, going to a nutritionist, a secular counselor, and a christian counselor all failed to make much of an impact at all in my destructive eating disorder. They gave me important tools and helped me along the way, but when I sought out this book and read it with an open mind and a desperate heart, I was sucked in and really found peace within myself.

I wish I still had my copy of the book but I gave it to a friend to read because I wanted to share the message of this book.

I have never seen a book be so honest and so truthful about the thoughts, feelings, and hopelessness going on in your mind while struggling with day to day life.It made you feel like you were not the only one out there and still gave you so many amazing verses, ideas, and built you up in a way nothing else has done for me.I would suggest this book to anyone who is struggling with an eating disorder, with their self esteem, or with their self image. It is amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing Christain view of ED's
Mrs. Pettit does an excellent job writing about her own personal journey through an eating disorder.Today we focus so much on secular ways to treat eating disorders that we forget that God is the only one the that can deliver one from the pain of an eating disorder.I found Mrs. Pettit's journey of using Christ's strength to get through her eating disorder very encouraging. She is the only person I have found so far that is willing to write about how God helped her through her battle. If you are looking for a spiritual way instead of apurely secular way to get through an eating disorder, read this book. You will not be sorry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, realistic account, but may be triggering
Ms. Pettit gives an excellent, painfully honest account of what it's like to live with an ED. The one concern is that it may be triggering to anorexics whose overly-religious families contributed to their ED. Still, she gives a good example of how positive religion can be to recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Any woman with low self-esteem because of weight-read this!
This book is incredible. It offers insight into the mind of a sufferer as well as giving honest truths about society's attitudes in general.I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to understand/overcome an eating disorder or is simply struggling with their self-image.It is interspersed with uplifting quotations which are fast becoming my fuel for fighting my thoughts. As a strong Christian trying to recover from anorexia it was overwhelming to read of Mrs Pettit's experiences and be able to relate them to my own.The truth and honesty of her story and how scarily like me it is shook me up and has given fresh determination to conquer my obsession.Giving it to my fiance to read has also helped me to expain feelings i cannot articulate. The best part is the focus on self-worth being about your qualities and importance as a person to other people and to God rather than your weight.Mrs Pettit is a fantastic role model and reading her book has been an experience which has opened my mind to a new, liberating way of thinking. So needless to say, read it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful book
Take Charge of Your Child's Eating Disorder is one of the best books available on how to deal with an eating disordered child. In fact, I own two copies: one that is autographed by Pam Carlton, and the other which is underlined and marked throughout. The chapter dealing with insurance companies alone is worth the price of the book, and the tips provided throughout this enlightening book will be invaluable to any parent who is facing the daunting task of helping their child recover from an eating disorder.

Buddy Howard

5-0 out of 5 stars Physician walks her talk.
Take Charge of Your Child's Eating Disorder is a 5 star book. This book is by far the most complete and concise book I have read for parents who are struggling with this life threatening disorder. I have two copies in our EDRS lending library, and can not keep them in stock! Dr. Carlton begins by helping parents talk about their concerns with their child, and leads them step by step through the process ofthe first doctor's appointment, the necessity of a treatment team,as well as what to expect if their child needs higher levels of care. Dr. Carltons' breadth of knowledge is evident by the information she gives regarding how to create a supportive environment at home, how to deal with siblings, who to tell, and how to deal with questions from family and friends. Clear, compassionate advice is given on how to work with teachers and school administrators when a child has missed school work due to intensive treatment. The feedbacks I have received from the parents in my practice have been, "The chapter and sample letters on dealing with insurance companies alone is worth the price of the whole book!"
Dr. Carlton is a physician who walks her talk. She has been an invaluable member of more than one of my treatment teams.
She gave me the information I needed to help my families deal with insurance denials before the publication of this book. Her assistance in this area was pivotal to my clients' recovery, and quite possibly saved a life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Parents, beware
If you're a parent looking for guidance from a physician who supports families as they help their child recover from an eating disorder, stop right here. You won't find such guidance in this book. Despite claims of the author to the contrary, this book does NOT support families but rather offers the same old same old advice from yet another so-called eating disorders expert who seems to understand little about how to help patients and families. I was offended by this book's know-it-all tone and condescension toward parents and families. There are already plenty of titles like this out there, sadly; no need to add one more. There are far better books out there on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a practical book for parents, filled with insight from an MD who *specializes* in EDs!
After battling an eating disorder of my own for years, I know what works and what doesn't.I have also seen, firsthand, the tedious journey parents go through when caring for a child with an eating disorder.Even though I am now in recovery, both my parents and I have read this book and were immensely impressed. My parents learned things about my disorder that, until now, they still had trouble grasping. My mother has recommended it to a close friend whose daughter was just diagnosed with Anorexia, saying that "she wishes she had read this book about ten years ago" [when my eating disorder began].Make sure to read the insurance chapter and Appendix G . . . both my parents went through hell and back--with little to no guidance/help--in trying to get insurance companies to extend my coverage for the eating disorder.
Overall, Dr. Carlton's book is filled with informative + practical advice, coupled with evidence-based strategies to help your child overcome an eating disorder!

5-0 out of 5 stars Take Charge of Your Child's Eating Disorder
This is a fascinating and easy to read book with touching testimonies.
It provides powerful and practical tools for parents. It's like having Dr. Calton hold your hand and walk you through this challenging journey as you face the knowledge that your child has eating disorders. Unavailable elsewhere, the sample letters in this book make strong claims to insurance companies.

Product Description
A harrowing, yet inspiring, true story of one family's struggle to save their daughter Excerpts from the actual diaries of a mother and daughter take you inside their home, their family, and their minds to see how they react to, cope with, and ultimately win their battle over teen depression and eating disorders. Linda Rio, a psychologist and family therapist experiences her worst nightmare-as she's helping other families cope, she's unable to recognize or respond to her own daughter's dangerous eating disorder. Her daughter, Tara, overwhelmed by pressures at school, feels the disorder taking over her life but is unable to stop it. Eventually, she attempts suicide and is committed to a hospital. Day-by-day, crisis-by-crisis, the journals tell the parallel story of mother and daughter, living together but with wildly different perceptions. More than just a view inside this family's ordeal, The Anorexia Diaries offers help and hope to others dealing with this problem. Advice and commentary is included from Craig Johnson, Ph.D., who helps readers understand how to recognize and treat anorexia and bulimia in their own families. LINDA RIO is a licensed marriage and family therapist for more than 15 years in southern California. TARA RIO spends her free time speaking about her teenage experience with eating disorders and poor body image. CRAIG JOHNSON, PH.D., is the director of the eating disorders program at Laureate Psychiatric Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 1-0 out of 5 stars ABizarre, Horrible Book
Were they kidding? This kid developed anorexia because HER MOM WORKED?Well, she should slit her throat if she HAD A JOB.This book was difficult to get into.I felt that this kid was really spoiled if her mother was making her breakfast at the age of seventeen. Her mother seemed to do alot for her family and this child did not appear to be grateful for it at all. This book was undeveloped, and the reasons for the problem were not fully explored or explained.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOTHING TO DO WITH ANOREXIA FOR MORE THAN HALF OF THE BOOK!!
I'm a recovering anorexic who assumed this book would help me relate to the mother and daughter in this book. It was non discriptive, including not even telling how low Tara's weight got, her weeks in treatment, and didn't say how much she lost. They never said she got sick looking or anything related. The rest of the book was complete garbage about how she is doing at home and at school. O yeah, her mother is so naive to even pay attention to how her health was going. " Tara looks kindof blank and sad", says her mother. WELL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT IF YOU'RE A PSCHYATRIST AND HELP HER!!! don't waste you're time and money on this book. it's just not worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars True story, Real insight. Good Theories.
I thought this mother/daughter story was very accurate and sincere. How wonderful that they kept such a telling record of thier struggles for others to read. Many other reviewers have said that this is too "easy, boring, and worhtless", I think those may be the readers who are reading eating disorder books to feed thier own eating issues...like "Wasted", which many have called a handbook for how to have an eating disorder. I think this story is not as graphic as some, but it is a true account of a mother and daughter and thier struggles with a deadly disease. Also, the commentary by Dr. Craig Johnson was very interesting to read. He is very well known in this field, and he covers many issues in a very easy-to-understand way in this book.
Remember, not all eating disorder books are going to be as graphic as books such as "Wasted", but then again, not all eating disorders are that graphic either.

2-0 out of 5 stars Superficial and simple
Without trivializing the sufferings of the Rio family, I honestly feel like this book offers no insight to the complexity of anorexia nervosa.Tara's eating disorder - which was not anorexia at all, but bulimorexia - was a relatively short ordeal, and she did not hide it from her family like many sick young women do (or like the excerpt from the back of the book would have the prospective reader believe she did).Introspection is nihil - rarely expressed is sentiment deeper than "I feel fat".Moreover, the overall tone is self-centered, as the authors never speculate upon the epidemic nature of the disease; I call this sort of self-congratulatory, non-academic memoir "victimization literature."For these reasons and more, I cannot recommend this title as a quality account of an eating disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Insightful-A Raw Look at Real Life
I found this book to be refreshingly real and raw. Beyond the scope of eating disorders it addressed everyday issues I think many teen girls are battling with. As a woman in my mid-twenties, I related to much of Tara's thoughts while also gaining a sense of empathy for the struggles I put my own mother through.

I think every woman will relate to at least some aspect of the Rio's story. As a recovered bulimic, I've read MANY books about eating disorders. However, few have touched me the way this one has. I'm tired of reading books from a clinical point of view. This one read like a soap opera and kept my interest to the very end. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, well written, but a little Boring
I have read over 20 Eating Disorder memoirs. This one really portrayed how people can have anorexia alongside moderate forms of OCD. The author writes in detail...her life over 9 years...she was heavily consumed by anorexia and the need to be perfect. However this book is different in how close she is to her family, how incredibly supportive they are..how driven she was by perfection and to please others down to the fine detail. It is also different in that she never once mislead people, told lies, or played games in her illness. She 100% was the perfect patient, and tried ever so hard to get better and comply with all treatment and help. I was amazed.

Also, in the back of the book it has 3-4 letters from family, explaining how they coped from their perspective as a mother, father, sister, brother and boyfriend.

I think this book could be extremely helpful for families and professionals in understanding the complexity and multi-facets of the illness, especially medically and physically.

I don't feel it's that helpful for sufferers unless you also suffer from OCD and an amazing ability to ALWAYS want to overcome the disorder instead of holding onto it.

She was amazingly compliant and good! I found the story interesting, but not so gripping or insightful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read!
I have read a lot of books on Eating Disorders from fiction to nonfiction. 'Perfect' is a book I would definitely suggest reading! I loved it because it was so different from most eating disorder books. I thoroughly enjoyed the way the book was actually written because a lot of books I've seen lately have been written using the worst language, spelling typos, etc. This book however, was well written which made the flow of the story so much easier. It also had a more mature (or maybe a more intellectual approach) outlook/analysis on the whole eating disorder nightmare which was more entertaining for myself and probably anyone else above the age of 17. Anyone either dealing with this disease them self or know someone who is, should absolutely take some time and read through this novel, you'll learn/understand more of this disease after you finish the novel! ... Product Description
This second edition updates the 1983 work ("a gem"--Booklist/RBB) with a wealth of new information. The author, a therapist and recovered anorexic, draws upon her own experience and extensive research to produce a comprehensive account of the symptoms, causes and treatments of anorexia nervosa.

She illuminates the anorexic's paradox--self-annihilation in service of self-preservation--and the central task of recovery: development of a Self. The author addresses the origins and attributes of anorexia and accompanying disorders, the use and misuse of the Internet, and the concept of recovery. She addresses different therapies in detail, as well as therapies for families and interventions. A directory of organizations, a list of resources for information and referral, a bibliography and index are included. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource for those seeking and providing treatment
I didn't know how much I didn't know about Anorexia before I read this book. Rich, multi-layered information! And I appreciate how refreshingly readable it is - beautifully written with precision, economy, eloquence, humanity and disarming candor. This is an invaluable resource both for professionals who are working with anorexics and those who are suffering from the disease - either as victims or loved ones.

Rumney wrote the 1st edition 25 years ago. In this 2nd edition she details how the past 25 years have informed her work as a treatment specialist as well as her personal growth and recovery from Anorexia. She weaves a candid and forthright telling of her illness and recovery throughout the book, which beautifully supplements her keen clinical perspective. The new information also includes vital clinical research, current trends (including shocking info about impact of the internet!), some astounding statistics and treatment centers listed by state.

The combination of her professional view and personal story provides a compelling understanding of this most perplexing condition. Her comprehensive discussion of what comprises effective treatment and why specific treatment modalities work is essential information for individuals researching treatment options or professionals who provide or refer treatment.

An excellent resource on Anorexia!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on a topic that concerns many people.
Avis Rumney has created a beautiful book that integrates personal and clinical experience, discussing the widespread cultural issue of women's body image and its effects on eating and self-esteem. I would recommend this to any parent of a girl of any age, as well as individuals or families dealing with any type of eating disorders or compulsive overeating. Also useful for clinicians working with these issues in their practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Starving for life
On the surface, anorexia is a tragic disease of self-starvation. Underneath, however, lies an individual with a voracious hunger for life, meaning, purpose, connection, and validation. _Going Hungry_ is an illuminating collection of essays from 19 writers whose personal experiences shed light on this highly misunderstood disease, and offer a deeper look into the mindset of this body-destructive disorder. Informative, fascinating, poignant, touching, and eye-opening, _Going Hungry_ offers a much-needed course to the growing menu of eating disorder publications.

5-0 out of 5 stars is the Why really what you think it is?
Ms Taylor edited a set of really great, poignant essays which delve in the mindset of Anorexia and attempt (rather successfully) to try to explain why, what, how and the when during different periods of the disease.
We all on some subconscious level believe that Anorexia is a disease of white middle class affluent girls and this is simply not true.
The editor let everyone talk - it wasn't about whether the individual had overcome the disease or was still in the throes of it but the most important thing was each person spoke.

And I learnt - much...

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful views of the problem
This book has very good and varied views of people who have and will always have this horrible disease. Being a parent of a woman struggling with this now and for the past 16 years it just helps to see that no one is alone and the manifestations are the same all across the board!

4-0 out of 5 stars When happens when "thin" is in style
In 20th century America and beyond starving yourself has become de rigueur. This svelte woman of today, she is what we gauge our version of attractiveness upon. Unlike the women of the Renaissance who had wide thighs, sturdy hips, and bulbous derrieres, were considered the epitome of attractiveness because they had money to feed themselves, our society doesn't believe that starvation is a blight upon the land. Now society hails to the anorexic. This is the girl who disappears to be seen by her parents, or the CEO who wants to self-improve, as if her career wasn't enough, as she simultaneously destroys her body into oblivion. Compromising what you eat on a day-to-day basis is a form of control and regulation of emotions, eating, dating, or sleep and this is what American society, with its rampant credit card excesses, cadre of kitchen gadgets that are never used, plethora of second homes, all seem to be the standard that needs to be followed rigorously by some, perhaps even excelled to.

By not overindulging in food you are proving to the world that you are successful with one thing: your weight. Whether successful or not, model, actress, CEO, women show the world their thin bodies, tiny waists, or constant craving for protein and petite corporate lunches that we, the women of today, are in control. As each new iteration of the DSM IV comes out there is always another definition of psycho-sickness. Now anorexia and its sisters in crime: bulimia and excessive use of laxatives are under attack. The reality of the situation is that until women start to believe that they are beautiful at any size they'll be prey to the commentaries of societal size expectations of women. This book is tightly edited and fantastic situational explanations from various women of all ages. This is a testament to our society.

Armchair Interviews says: This book contains essays by 19 authors: Priscilla Becker, Francesca Lia Block, Maya Browne, Jennifer Egan, Clara Elliot, Amanda Fortini, Louise Glück, Latria Graham, Francine du Plessix Gray, Trisha Gura, Sarah Haight, Lisa Halliday, Elizabeth Kadetsky, Maura Kelly, Ilana Kurshan, Joyce Maynard, John Nolan, Rudy Ruiz, and Kate Taylor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful
This was an excellent book overall, and a number of the essays (including the editor's own contribution) are genuinely outstanding. My own perspective is that of someone who has not experienced this herself, but is close to those who have--if this is yours as well, and/or if you are perplexed and bewildered by anorexia as a medical phenomenon, this would be the ideal book to read.It includes a number of perspectives, with all the essays well-written, direct, and unsentimental, and yet from this variety some essence of understanding does emerge with regard to what the disease may actually be "about."Very highly recommended. ... Product Description
This title explains our current knowledge regarding anorexia in general, and activity anorexia in particular, which, the authors argue, any person can develop under certain conditions. The book first provides a critical review of the diverse medical and psychological perspectives regarding anorexia nervosa, and contends that many traditional viewpoints on this problem can be misleading: anorexia is often not a mental illness and should, therefore, not be treated as such. The authors suggest that excessive activity in anorectics is not a secondary symptom, but rather a central feature in understanding the disorder. From the results of laboratory experiments on animals, and from clinical observations of patients, the authors suggest that people in sports, athletics, and fitness programs may develop eating disorders due to the impact of excessive training on patterns of food intake. The authors also present and evaluate methods of treating and preventing anorexia, which integrate their findings. ... Read more

Product Description

Say the name Nikki Grahame and most people will remember the bubbly, highly strung, and hugely entertaining Big Brother 7 contestant, famous for her diary room outbursts. Since leaving the Big Brother house, she had forged a successful career for herself in presenting and writing. Yet Nikki isn’t just another reality television contestant and her life story is not like any other you will ever read. From the age of eight until she was 19, Nikki battled anorexia nervosa—but few cases have been quite as extreme as hers. What she has been through while suffering from this illness will surprise and shock readers. At just seven years old, Nikki began feeling that she was overweight. A remark about her being fat from a fellow pupil at a gymnastics class, along with insecurity brought about by her parents’ separation and her beloved grandfather’s death, were the catalysts for Nikki’s long-term eating disorder. Aged just eight and weighing just under three stone, she was diagnosed as anorexic. For the next eight years, Nikki was in and out of seven institutions, during which time she attempted suicide twice and had to be sedated up to four times a day so that she could be force-fed. At one point, she was sedated for 14 days while doctors sewed a tube into her stomach, through which she was fed in order to get her weight out of the critical range. Nikki admits that she knew every anorexic’s trick in the book: from breaking into hospital kitchens to water down full-fat milk, altering her diet sheet and switching name tags on food to ensure that she received smaller amounts, to even stuffing a door-stop down her trousers before a weigh-in. The extremes that she went to in order to avoid eating and find ways to exercise excessively shocked doctors who have worked in the field for years. As Nikki says, "I’ve always wanted to be the best at everything I do, so I had to be the best anorexic—and I was." This is the heart-rending and powerful story of a girl who lost her childhood but was brave enough to finally admit that she wanted to live again. With searing honesty, Nikki recounts her long and painful road to recovery, how she has had to come to terms with the long-term ramifications of her illness, how she coped with being in the Big Brother house and how she uses her new-found fame to promote awareness of eating disorders and to help those who are suffering from similar problems. This compelling book tells the story of an incredible journey.

Product Description
In this wide-ranging book, Julie Hepworth casts a critical light on our contemporary understanding of anorexia nervosa. She locates contemporary discourses of anorexia nervosa within their historical context, showing how current practices continue to be influenced by medicine, psychology, ideology and politics. She argues that anorexia nervosa must be considered within the political, social and gendered relationships that continue to contribute to its definition. The book demonstrates the need for a new conceptualization of anorexia nervosa which would draw on the insights of discourse theory, feminism and postmodernism to create new understandings of anorexia nervosa within contemporary health care practices. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A pithy gem
Deborah Michel and Susan Willard have drawn from their wealth of experience treating patients in one of the most enduring and effective inpatient eating disorders programs to create a concise introduction to anorexia nervosa and bulimia. When Dieting Becomes Dangerous is written plainly enough to provide a working knowledge of eating disorders to patients and families while going into sufficient depth to give treating professionals a valuable resource. It provides an elegant model of the treatment team, clearly defining the roles of each member as the team deals with both the target behaviors and the underlying struggle to create an enduring sense of self beyond the limits of body image.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ignorance is dangerous too
This small book by Michel and Willard is one of thebest and most accessible pieces of writing I have read about eating disorders. Without the hype and drama that the conditions usually inspire, the authors discuss calmly and thoughtfully the possible root causes of anorexia and bulimia as well as the route to recovery. There were several items in this book that I found useful - one was the comprehensive discussion of the ideal team approach to treating the disorders. The role of the dietitian is particularly interesting - I had never thought of the possibility that someone with an eating disorder would need a professional with that training not just for information about eating healthfully but to give the patient an outlet for his or her obsessive concerns about food, so that therapy could address other issues. Along those lines, Michel and Willard highlight the roles that other health professionals, such as dentists, can play in identifying and treating eating disorders. This is a must read for any health professional who might ever encounter someone with an eating disorder and not be sure of what to do. I also welcomed the discussion of the male patterns with respect to eating disorders - very often we categorize these as female problems and overlook the fact that boys and men can and do suffer from them, albeit in slightly different proportions and manners. I think this is also one of the few texts that discusses the role of the family without implicitly blaming family members for what has happened - and that is valuable to all concerned. All in all, a good read - quick and informative - and essential for anyone who has an eating disorder or knows someone who does. ... Read more
