5-0 out of 5 stars anxiety workbook
This workbook is excellent if you are motivated to make lifestyle changes towards less anxiety. It is helpful in identifying where the anxiety is coming from and what to do about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I purchased this book mainly because I wanted to get rid of social anxiety. However, as I was reading the book I realized that I had so many other things that I needed to change in my life (all of them probably contribute to social anxiety as well) such as alleviate perfectionism, remove self-doubt and all bad beliefs, become more relaxed in general and create a balance between play and work.

The book has helped me to put together a program for myself to reduce anxiety. A few of the steps in the program are relaxation (meditating and visualization), exposure (step by step), becoming more assertive, increasing my self-esteem, changing bad beliefs with good ones, taking care of my needs, etc.

I must say that I haven't started with the program yet but I'm going to in a few days and my expectations are very upscale.

5-0 out of 5 stars 7 year old worry wort
I have a 7year old son that worries about every little thing. He gets stomach aches before school, thinks his heart is beating too fast among other things. We read this book with him and he was amazed thinking it was written just for him. It has helped soooooo much.
I highly recommend it to anyone that has a child that seems to worry that his/her arm will fall off because of the splinter in the finger!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
This book simplifies the feelings that we all face and puts them into words. The illustrations and activities are wonderful for elementary-age children.I read this book with my daughter (age 7) and she immediately stated that it sounded a lot like her! It almost does feel as if it was written for her.I am now going toread it to my class of 6th graders with special needs.I also have the book about "grumbles" by the same author and it too is amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teacher
I am a preschool teacher and a busy mom of 4 children. I have always incorporated relaxation concepts into raising my children. Amazon has made it so easy to find wonderful books like What to do When You Worry Too Much. My 5 year old started kindergarten and was worried...new school, new town, new experience... I started using the tools from this book and found them so successful that I decided to use them in my preschool class..Kids today are all dealing with worry on one level or another.. I also use relaxing music to help my class nap or just calm down..When children experience relaxating moments throughout their day I believe that they benefit now and as an adult. I use The Most Soothing Lullabies In The Universe and Indigo Dreams: Kids Relaxation Music Decreasing Stress, Anxiety and Anger, improve sleep. If you are the parent of one of the millions of children with worry and anxiety: help is on the way. Treatment is not about trying to cajole or talk kids out of their fears; it's about teaching them to see worry as a problem to be solved. Translating cutting-edge techniques into down-to-earth, empathic, user-friendly steps, Freeing Your Child from Anxiety equips parents, teachers and therapists with the information they need to recognize the red flags of anxiety in children and how they can systematically overcome the obstacles that anxiety imposes.

Empowering and insightful, Freeing Your Child from Anxiety, gives children - from preschool to high school - the action plan and the tools to take charge, unplug from anxiety, and plug into sound, realistic thinking. Learning the lessons from parents, children can reduce anxiety and even prevent anxiety disorders from taking hold.

Part Two goes in depth, with separate chapters for each anxiety subtype: panic, separation anxiety, social anxiety, generalized worry, phobias, trauma, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Also included is a chapter on habit behaviors and conditions which are typically exacerbated by stress, tics and trichotillomania.

Part Three expands the focus to anxious children at school, and with friends and siblings.Because nighttime can be a very anxious time, a chapter on managing nighttime fears and sleep difficulties is included.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good background info but not good as a "how-to" guide for parents
This is a great general book on all types of anxiety, if you want to understand someone's anxiety or your own. As a parent, it didn't really help me to help my 9 year old. In contrast, the workbook called "What to Do When you Worry Too Much" by Dawn Huebner is easily understood by kids and parents, and we were able to start working on anxiety issues right away. It uses the same techniques that are found in this book, but helps you to apply them. I also like Anxiety Free Kids by Zucker, which uses the same techniques but goes into a little more detail. But we started with Huebner's book--easy to understand and apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't recommend it more
As both a psychologist and mom, I cannot say enough about this book.It is written in a way that is very easy to understand, yet the concepts presented are solid as a rock.Dr. Chansky trusts that parents are smart enough to help their own children with their anxiety, and she gives them the tools to do it.You can ABSOLUTELY make a difference in your anxious child's life by reading this book and teaching your child how to manage their "worry brain."

4-0 out of 5 stars Recomended my my counselor
This book is written for children with severe anxiety. Even so, I was able to learn practical steps to use with my child that is afraid of the dark.Just skim over the parts that don't apply to your situation and I'm sure you will find good advice for you andyour child.Be patient when reading this book, because it is written to help handle soooooooooooooo many different types of fears.Just remember you can skip over parts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone could benefit from reading this book
If you're suffering from anxiety, buy this book.Read it.Then read it again.I wish I had found this book early on in my search for both how to understand and how to fix what was happening to me.

First of all, the techniques the author suggests are simple and straightforward.Second of all, they work.I had no idea how important my diet and exercise was to my mental well-being, and after implementing the techniques in this book, I started feeling better immediately.

As a side note, there are a few different types of anxiety. This book actually talks about all of them, so whether it's panic attacks that you're experiencing, or whether you have social or generalized anxiety, this book will likely help you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Moderately easy to read and good, up to date information about neural research without being too complicated
Good book to understanding anxiety and its origins.A number of techniques you likely have heard of, but decent explanations and exercises to help anxiety sufferers with cognitive and behavioral therapies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining AND Life Changing!
I've had super-strong anxiety all my life, on and off with depression. Everybody knows the best way to help yourself permanently is a combination of medicine and behaviour modification, so after years of only doing the former, I set out to find the best information to tackle the latter.

I looked at a million books online and in the library, bought a few, but by miles this is the best one of the lot. If you can only buy ONE book in your life to help you, make it this one.

It is a fascinating read from beginning to end. I came to it not really caring why or how my brain was making me anxious- I just knew I wanted to stop how I was feeling. In fact, the most interesting part of the book is explaing how and why your brain causes your anxiety. Far from being a dry medical monologue of terminology and bio-chemistry, the information and the way it was presented was more like watching a fascinating documentry on Discovery Health. The information is solid and presented in a passionate and entertaining way (without dumbing anything down either, I might add) which says something for the author's talent and style. I found myself smiling or chuckling sometimes when she'd explain a concept and why it works, and while I'm turning the page my brain is yelping, "Yeah, but so what! What if x, y or z is happening to you, then it's not going to work is it!?" only to read on the next page when she continues that she's ALREADY thought of my secret protestation, and goes on to shoot it down with logic and facts. Very funny!

This isn't a top 10 list like an extended Oprah magazine article, nor is it a finger wagging book telling you things like if you are feeling anxious to go write in your gratitude journal or take a bubble bath and give yourself affirmations in a mirror. These are very real, true ways that work with how a human brain naturally works itself: you are teaching yourself ways to override the chunk of your brain that is causing the anxiety response with another physical area of your brain that will control another action- your brain simply is not built to do both styles of things at once. You are forcing it by will to complete another task so it is unable to fire out those messages of anxiety. It really is an unbelievable read. After being this way my entire life from childhood to adulthood, I can say that after putting these techniques into practise that I am not that same person anymore, my life has improved dramatically and I am happier, more calm, less prone to depression and all-around a healthier person. Just buy the book. It is impossible that you won't find it helpful, yourself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been condensed into a list
Could have been condensed into a simple list rather than trying to expand it to a full book.

5-0 out of 5 stars PRO-MEDICATION
I got the impression reading the reviews that this book was against using medication. After reading the chapter on drugs, in fact, the book is very open to meds and specifies when they are recommended in addition to the techniques which are the heart of this book. That coincides with what I have read from NIH researchers, and a little of the other professional literature.Norman Rosenthal in his book on emotions says in particular that panic is better dealt with without meds, but he often gives meds out of compassion in addition to recommending therapy.

I am in no way an expert or well read on the subject, just sharing my 2 cents since I think others may get the wrong impression from the reviews here.Medication has an important place and I think it should not be devalued based on one's own personal experience. There are many people who have no respect for psychologists based on their experience, but that is not very rational or scientific either.

The best therapy is often both medication and psychological help. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful for work w/ young teens
I am a therapist who was looking for a good workbook w/ tools to help w/ anxiety for my adolescent population.Although this workbook has some good materials it seems to be more appropriate for preteen or younger teens.Which is still helpful for me.For parents looking for a good workbook I would recommend this book for kids 11 through 14 or 15.Older than that I would look into books geared toward adults, as I think older teens would find this book immature.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for younger teens I think
So far this workbook has helped me figure somee things out about myself. My therapist recommended I buy it and it is an organized way of thinking about what stresses you out. The only reason I give it a 4 star is because I think it is meant for younger teens (I am 18) as opposed to late teens. I feel like the actual lessons are a bit elementary, things I already know or can do an easier way. That also may just be me.

Overall I recommend getting this book because even if you know your problem spots and how to deal with them, this book can tell you how to get rid of the weight on your shoulders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for my students
I bought several of these workbooks and they are great. It is really based on the Cognitive behavioral therapy and I use it with my middle school and high school students. ** I especially love the anxiety workbook out of all of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars great product, great service
Received book quickly and in great condition.Loved content of book.Great for anyone, not just teens.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for teen anxiety!
I bought this book to utilize with a teen girls support group I am currently leading. I found it to be packed with useful ideas, questions, activities, suggestions, handouts, and more. It's a great resource for a school or mental health professional to have on the shelf and refer to or make copies from to talk through with teens. This seems to be a book best used in a setting where these can be talked through, as opposed to just filled out personally. It covers a pretty broad range of topics but is very straightforward.
Overall, I think it's a great resource!

Thanks so much,

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard Work, Takes Time, butWORKS
All I can say is that this book is fabulous. However, only for the diligent. If you are someone who is committed to changing- and actually will follow through, this is the book for you. It has taken me over 4 months, and I am still only 2/3 done with the book.It is not a quick fix and will not be something you can fly thorough. It is amazing, and has changed my life in the most amazing way.I have recommended it to so many people.

5-0 out of 5 stars best anxiety workbook ever! a must have!
This book changed my life. If you want results, I would certainly grab a copy and do all the helpful exercises. You won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars After 20 years of searching, finally an answer.
I have struggled with a phobia for nearly 20 years. I have tried everything to heal it, from popular audio programs(think late night infomercials) to eft to changing diet to just trying to muscle through it, to cognitive therapy, to hypnotherapy, to YOU NAME IT. I have tried it. This book HAD MY ANSWER. Really and truly, this book healed my phobia. I still get anxiety, but I don't fight it now. I'm practicing every day and shocking myself how much more calm I am, not only with my phobia, but with my life! This book has saved my life. I can't thank the authors enough!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Mindfulness & Acceptance Workbook for Anxiety
This product didn't help me.I find her voice too abrupt and without authenticity, like she was reading unfeelingly from a page instead of thinking about what she was saying. In the first part she asks us to breathe naturally, just noticing how we breathe, but she guides the speed of our breath by saying "in, out, in, out" rather quickly right after that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Acceptance is the beginning
As a mindfulness psychotherapist and author of 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation', I welcome this book. The problem is always in how we relate to our inner traumas and painful emotions. Do we accept them and give them our full attention or do we react out of habit with aversion and resistance? Acceptance is not about giving in and resignation, but about the first step in choosing to form a real relationship with our suffering based on openness of mind and heart. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unsure Still
I bought this book since my therapist recommended it.I started to read the first couple of pages and was not really interested.I guess I'll have to be in the mood to read this type of book.I gave it 4 stars because I'm still unsure but my therapist says it's a great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars too many changes from the previous version
i especially don't like how the suggested readings jump from chapter to chapter vs. proceeding through the book one chapter at a time in sequential order.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Anxiety- Great Choice!
I have struggled with anxiety and panic issues for a long time now, and nothing helps me feel more in control about my panic than this book. It covers every topic that someone struggling with anxiety worrys about, and reassures you that its all going to be okay and that you are in control of your panic. I would recommend this book for anyone who is serious about managing their anxiety and panic, because it does require a decent amount of effort. However, it definitely pays off in the end. The worksheets and overall interactive nature of this book is extremely helpful in that the book does more than just lecture you about your panic. It allows you to be an active participant in your effort to manage (and eventually overcome) panic and anxiety. This is the book for you if you are ready to change your life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from Books That Heal Kids
I've been using this as a social story to teach kids how to cope with stress and put their anxiety in it's place. This is a tool I use in collaboration with parents and teachers. It makes no sense for me to teach this by myself if we're not all using it as a united front. I've used it in small groups and individually. There is a five point stress scale and it is awesome and helpful to children. Kids who are on the spectrum or have anxiety disorders could really benefit from reading this every day. I've seen a lot of success with this social story. Share it with the parents first and see if they would be on board to use it as a tool. Very grateful for this one. Helps me be a better school counselor.

4-0 out of 5 stars helping children relax
I like using this book but I do add additional visuals related to the numbers .... like the image of a thermometer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Helpful
Good for preschoolers, early elementary age kids, and those with Aspergers or Autism spectrum.Otherwise this book would be too simplistic.I liked how this helps kids to scale their own feelings and care for them before an explosion occurs. It is even helpful that there is a stress scale to increase self awareness and a ways to calm down to increase self regulation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful tool
I have used this book a couple of times already. I was able to make copies of the illustrations so that the consumer can write and draw along with the book without coloring in the book. This allows them to keep a copy of their own work and practice the technique with family. It helps teach about stress levels and identifying triggers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Kids
My 10 year old son suffers from anxiety and this book has been an excellent help to him.He carries this book with him every where he goes and uses it as necessary to remind himself what to do when his anxiety is overwhelming!I would recommend this book to everyone who suffers from anxiety, even adults! ... Product Description
Are you plagued by fears, phobias, or panic attacks? Do you toss and turn at night with a knot in your stomach, worrying about your job, your family, work, your health, or relationships? Do you suffer from crippling shyness, obsessive doubts, or feelings of insecurity?
What you may not realize is that these fears are almost never based on reality. Anxiety is one of the world’s oldest cons. When you’re anxious, you’re actually fooling yourself. You are telling yourself things that simply aren’t true. See if you can recognize yourself in any of these distortions:
All-or-Nothing Thinking: “My mind will go blank when I give my presentation at work, and everyone will think I’m an idiot.”
Fortune Telling: “I just know I’ll freeze up and blow it when I take my test.”
Mind Reading: “Everyone at this party can see how nervous I am.”
Magnification: “Flying is so dangerous. I think this plane is going to crash!”
Should Statements: “I shouldn’t be so anxious and insecure. Other people don’t feel this way.”
Emotional Reasoning: “I feel like I’m on the verge of cracking up!”
Self-Blame: “What’s wrong with me? I’m such a loser!”
Mental Filter: “Why can’t I get anything done? My life seems like one long procrastination.”
Now imagine what it be like to live a life that’s free of worries and self-doubt; to go to sleep at night feeling peaceful and relaxed; to overcome your shyness and have fun with other people; to give dynamic presentations without worrying yourself sick ahead of time; to enjoy greater creativity, productivity and self-confidence.
Does that sound impossible? The truth is you can defeat your fears. In When Panic Attacks, Dr. Burns takes you by the hand and shows you how to overcome every conceivable kind of anxiety. In fact, you will learn how to use more than forty simple, effective techniques, and the moment you put the lie to the distorted thoughts that plague you, your fears will immediately disappear. Dr. Burns also shares the latest research on the drugs commonly prescribed for anxiety and depression and explains why they may sometimes do more harm than good.
This is not pop psychology but proven, fast-acting techniques that have been shown to be more effective than medications. When Panic Attacks is an indispensable handbook for anyone who’s worried sick and sick of worrying. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK!
This book is the greatest self-help book Ive read about my mood swings. The book tells you that all the negative thinking and mood swings are caused because of your irrational thinking and suggests that if we can change how we THINK, we can change how we FEEL. Of course this insight is backed up, explained in depth throughout the book with practical, interesting, fun, self-observing and self-healing exercises. These exercises do work especially if you like writing, keeping a journal or simply examining yourself. The exercises reveal very interesting facts about your thinking process, they reach to the most deepdown FEAR you have that cause all these negative feelings and anxiety. The author promises compassionately that he is ready to help you and he is SURE, IF YOU FOLLOW the book, do the exercises YOU CAN STOP THE WAY YOU FEEL BY CHANGING THE WAY YOU THINK. The exercises in the book let you REFUTE a negative thought that you have and the negative thought becomes NO LONGER valid. I could write forever about this book. I wish I could give this book away to people who suffer the way I suffered!!!! ITS THE BEST BOOK ever in its field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy Camper
This was a gift for a friend, but they seemed happy with it and it came pretty fast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginning for Recovery
This is a good book to aid in recovery, however, I agree with the author:quicker recovery from severe anxiety disorder is possible when assisted by a professional psychologist. But he does present some very valid points and I can attest to this from personal experience. One is that medication is not the answer. He stated that recovery time with and without medication is about the same. I agree. The book presents actual case studies and maps out a course for self-assisted recovery. And while these are very good tools, it was hard for me to focus on reading after a major breakdown. I think it does make a good companion to professionally guided psychotherapy, but is not a substitute.

5-0 out of 5 stars I feel better already
great advice and very good real-life examples. if you or anyone you know struggles a little or a lot with anxiety or depression issues, these CDs and/or the book can lessen the symptoms without analyzing your past and your childhood.good advice and readily useful!however, as the author states, if you have really serious issues, it is also wise to see a professional therapist.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really does work
The book is really helpful, but will require a little homework. It not only helps you understand what is going on, but it guides you in an easy to follow format on how to feel better. It is not the typical "self help book".It allows you to feel what you feel, instead of someone just telling you how you feel. This book is great on your on or to work through with a professional.

My major HMO in Northern California uses this book for at least one of its overcoming anxiety classes. This workbook breaks down the symptoms and thinking errors that cause anxiety into simple, easy to understand chapters. Each chapter builds upon the previous one, so it is important to do the exercises in each chapter before progressing to the next chapter. It is a workbook, and it will require work. However, the work required will be worth it.This texthelped me to finally understand my feelings and gave me very valuable techniques to employ to reduce the anxiety episodes I was having.I highly recommend this workbook to anyone struggling with anxiety!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An excellent overview of anxiety disorders--causes, treatment, medications, etc.--written from a Christian perspective but helpful for all. Dr. Hart points out the important connection between anxiety and stress. The chapters dealing with medications (which he says are sometimes appropriate for a period of time) are very helpful. His emphasis on the role of sleep and stress is also a must read. Overall, I found the book both informative and encouraging. I highly recommend it. Take heart. There is hope for the "number one mental-health problem for women" and the second most prevalent for men (following substance abuse) in the United States (preface v.).

I am unable to give a review of this product's quality as far as the condition of the book because I ordered it for a third party with which I have very little contact.
However, I already had a copy of this book and can assure the reader of this review that this book is an accurate and powerful tool in overcoming the effects of anxiety in one's life.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
A lot of emphasis on panic attacks instead of general anxiety, but still pretty good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Answers for Sufferers of Anxiety
Hart presents a thorough and comprehensive book addressing the causes and effects of anxiety and panic disorders, stating that "anxiety is now the number one emotional problem of our day" (p. v).Hart approaches the subject from a physiological perspective, as well as from emotional and spiritual. He offers clear explanations for the causes of anxiety, as well as an array of treatment options.
Due to the fact that Hart believes that anxiety is partly caused my chemical imbalance in the brain, he supports the use of medication; He promotes the use of tranquilizers as well as anti-depressants.Although Hart spends a considerable amount of time describing the necessity of anti-anxiety medication and the various types, he also informs the reader about how and when to stop tranquilizers. Due to the highly addictiveness of tranquilizers, he stresses the importance of gradually stopping in order to prevent major withdrawal systems.
Hart places a major emphasis on ways to promote the brains production of natural tranquilizers. Many behaviors, mostly connected to the flight or fight response, will either reduce or enhance the natural tranquilizers in ones brain. He writes about how such things as stress, conflict, and insufficient sleep all have a negative effect on natural tranquilizers. Therefore, in order to enhance natural tranquilizers, Hart points out the importance of rest and relaxation, stating that "If anything, we need rest more today than ever before in history" (p. 123).He recommends doing deep relaxation techniques as well as maintaining the principles of Sabbath rest (p. 124), in order to rejuvenate the body and mind.
In addition to medication, Hart recommends Cognitive-behavioral therapy to help clients with the emotional aspect of panic disorder. He believes that people with anxiety "have distortions in their thinking...(which) give rise to a cycle of fear...and triggers the panic attack" (p. 61).Therefore, Hart stresses the importance of changing ones thinking habits, going so far as to say that, if this strategy is not included in the treatment, then healing will not move forward. "Every anxiety sufferer must learn new ways of thinking and develop methods for changing their former thinking patterns" (p. 111); Hart writes that if a sufferer of anxiety does not do this, they will depend on medication the rest of their lives (p. 111).
Overall, Hart offers a wealth of excellent information about anxiety and panic disorders. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for some real answers to their many questions about this so common modern day problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A reassuring parental guide
This book is an excellent guide to communicating with a child about anxiety and learning to overcome it.My daughter embraced the book's concept of the dragon (an externalization of the anxiety she felt) and the wizard (the calm, rational voice that confronts the anxiety), which gave her the language to use in talking about her anxious feelings. The book's practical advice gave us strategies for coping. And the stories about other children and how they overcome their anxieties reassured my child that she was not alone in her struggles. Moreover, the authors provide essential background information and first rate advice about the treatment choices available to parents confronting these issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book for young children w/ anxiety
My 6 year olds therapist recommended this book to me to understand anxiety and different ways to handle it.Boy the Dragon is such a wonderful and easy way to deal with it.The therapist said "This is the anxiety Bible for young children" and I can see why she says that.I have never experienced anxiety in children or adults so this is starting me off from the beginning and I am getting a hold of it and tackling it quick.Great read for parents that do not understand anxiety!

5-0 out of 5 stars Huge help to my daughter with OCD
My daughter (now 12) was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive disorder at age 9.Given that OCD is an anxiety-type disorder, and my daughter had always had fears and anxieties around certain things, I bought this book.We found it even more helpful than the OCD-specifcbooks.The etiology of anxiety and OCD are similar, and this book helps the child evoke the power of their own though process.By becoming the "boss" of their thoughts, they can reduce the power of their anxieties/obsessions.Basically, it takes the foundation of cognitive-behavior therapy and puts it into a kid-friendly context.Read the opening "Letter to Kids with Anxiety" to your kid. That's what I did, and she was hooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I can attest first-hand that the authors' methods of dealing with situational or specific anxiety in children works. My oldest son, now 14, had many fears, including thunderstorms and severe separation anxiety. We tried traditional "talk" therapy for many years with several different therapists, with no success. We finally found a cognitive therapist who was able to work with him with great success. My middle son has recently been in therapy with Elizabeth Spencer to handle anxiety about sleeping away from home, a problem he continued to have despite talk therapy with three different therapists.Elizabeth was able to get to the meat of my son's anxiety, help him understand why his brain was reacting the way it was, and what to do to overcome it.I'm please to report we had our last appointment today, and my son has had a summer of successful sleepovers and a week-long vacation, all without any anxiety. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile gift for any teen whose anxiety seems to be controlling their life
For some teens, there is just way too much on the plate. "My Anxious Mind: A Teen's Guide to Managin Anxiety and Panic" is a teen's guide to overcoming anxiety. Anxiety can be the root cause of so many of a teen's problems, and if they can overcome it, it can make a world of difference. "My Anxious Mind" is a worthwhile gift for any teen whose anxiety seems to be controlling their life.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last! A real book for real teens.
Psychologists Michael and Katherine have written a truly useful, graceful and appropriate book for all sorts of teenagers.Using the tools of cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) without any jargon, they lead teenagers through ten short chapters and many clear exercises to counter fearful anxieties and doubts.Self-help that really works and that is entirely respectful of the experience of teenage boys and girls is combined with explanations of the troubles, physical and mental means of dealing with them, and the help that healthful habits, smart uses of medication and adult support can bring.I've been a therapist for 40 years and almost never recommend books to clients, but I will absolutely be urging this book on anyone suffering from anxiety or whose kids wrestle with these difficult problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource For Teens and Their Families
Michael Tompkins and Katherine Martinez have taken their many years of combined experience working with teens and tranlated them into a book that is concise, informative , and accessible. It is clear the authors know their audience. My Anxious Mind provides teens with a full toolbox of strategies they can use to cope with their anxiety. I highly recommend this book for teens, their parents and psychotherapists who work with adolescents.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This Book
I love this book!I am a cognitive-behavioral psychotherapist in private practice specializing in anxiety disorders in children, teens and adults. This book is thorough and at the same time simple, making it appealing to teens. It is a great resource for professionals working with teens as well. The thing I like best is the rich use of metaphors. They explain concepts in a way that is easy to understand as well as to remember. For example when outlining common distortions, they talk about "binocular vision" to explain blowing negative things out of proportion and minimizing accomplishments, depending on which end of the binoculars you are looking through. When writing about panic attacks they help the reader understand that they need to change their relationship to anxiety, using the metaphor of riptides in the ocean. If you fight the riptide by desperately swimming to shore you won't do so well.Your chances are better if you float along until the current dies out, just like when you are having a panic attack.
Not only do my children and teen clients benefit from my reading this book, but these concepts and metaphors work great with adults as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Resource for All
I just finished reading this book and came away from it eager to write my very first Amazon book review! For a long time, I've been in search of a book that would help me better guide students who are struggling with anxiety and panic. What I didn't expect to find was a book that served that purpose and was at the same time a resource that I could so easily recommend to parents, fellow professionals, and students alike. What makes this such a good resource?First, it puts the young person in charge right from the start-by giving solid information to help them better understand what is going on and by providing them with tried and true techniques for managing their worries on their own. At the same time, there are guidelines all through the book on when and how to get additional help from parents and health-care professionals. The central imagine of a "worry wheel" certainly captures the experiences I hear reported by students in my own practice! The vignettes by teens throughout the book add realism. All in all, this is a most readable, informative, and practical book. And lastly, I adored the illustrations! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful how to for calm and lowering anxiety
This book is more about anxiety than yoga, but a wonderful blend of the two. As an innovate book, it ranks at the top. It presents clinical information in a readable way, as well as stories about ordinary people using the techniques. Mary and Rick NurrieStearns are grounded in solid knowledge about life, yoga, and anxiety, with a graceful writing style that adds to the pleasure of the read. I would recommend it both for self-help, but also for clinicians working with the anxious client.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga for Anxiety
This book is not a how to do Yoga Book, per se. There are hunderds of books on different types of Yoga and how to do yoga. This book is a lovely source of knowledge for anyone who wishes to take care of their physical, mental and spiritual health. It is also for anyone who has experienced anxiety. It is written in a style of loving kindness and by Mary and Rick's examples it teaches you to have compassion and patience with yourself. This book teaches you valuable tools that anyone can use to put themselves in charge of anxiety forever. The idea is that you can take charge of anxiety without medication, or ingesting alcohol or other substances. If this appeals to you, then this is well worth your time and money. This book is for you.

Rick and Mary have done extensive research into the latest findings of Neuroscience. They have explained it in easy to understand language, so you do not need to have a degree in science or biology to understand what is written in their book. A foundation key that Rick and Mary explain is that scientists have found, that the action of repeated firings of neurons changes the wiring of the brain. This simply means you can change your mental wiring by what you think, and how often you think it. This is crucial in understanding what Mary and Rick are teaching in this book. They explain that through the repetition ofpractice of Yoga techniques, and verbal mantra, the brain has the capacity to incorporate these into a healthy response style for responding to stress and anxiety.

Inorder to deal with fear/anxiety, Rick and Mary's book catogorizes this process of becoming aware of what you are unaware of, into "the five capacities of the mind". This is in keeping with Yoga tradition. 1.) Memory which involves the storing and remembering of information. 2.) Imagination, which represents a creative side, eg. music, art, innovation, humor - but it can also scare you into thinking about "what might be - what could happen". 3.) Perception, your ability to process or take in color in your environment, sounds, flavors, smells and the ability to touch things. 4.) Sense of Identity, another function of our minds, which incorporates our experiences which make up our own story about who we are. Mary points out that these stories are not who you are but they can control how you feel about yourself and keep you stuck in both postive and negative perceptions about yourself and patterns of behavior. 5.) Intelligence, which in the western world refers to IQ, but is explained better by Rick and Mary as wisdom or inner knowing. Mary and Rick's book helps one to use Yoga to recognize the workings of your mind and to become aware of your minds patterns. This new kind of awareness helps you use detachment to gain more wisdom and freedom from past stories and experiences, both negative and postive ones, that have become part of your identity.

Mary and Rick explain how anxiety, phobia and trauma are related to irrational fears. They also help us look at the by product which can take control of our lives which are the needs for certainty and safety. They teach us to analyze our needs for safety. While taking steps to help us feel safer, they offers tools to build up a tolerance for uncertainty as we know life does not offer any of us absolutes.

Mary and Rick introduce meditation, breathe work, silent retreats and yoga practices that anyone can learn and perform in their own home. Mary and Rick's book demonstrates yoga poses that can be practiced for 10-15 minutes at home. Some poses can be utilized in your work environment to help you free your body from anxiety. This book is truly a gift of love to humanity.

I am a practicing psychologist who has been doing therapy with clients since 1988. While I have taught individuals self relaxation, I see thisbook offering a compulation of tools that are interconnected and that are self healing. This book offers aholistic approach of incorporating tools for a life style change that will result in a new approach to anxiety, as well as dealing with ones own identity and early programing. I am also a certified yoga instructor and find these poses safe and ones that can be self taught.

I would highly recommend this book to clients, students, family and friends. This is the best medicine yet and it does not require ingesting a pill or other substance. It requires a small amount of time and some self discipline, like brushing ones teeth. Pretty soon, you just do it, and you do not think about it. It just is.

I purchased this for my daughter who is suffering from anxiety. She had some full blown panic attacks that kept her from working, socializing and almost all aspects of everyday living. The book will give you some ideas that you can use right away and that is what we were looking for.It has been updated recently and is quite easy to follow and understand. The title can be a little off-putting but if you can chuckle about that you are off to a good start.

5-0 out of 5 stars The anxiously awaited 2nd edition does not disappoint!

Along with refreshing the material from their 2007 edition, they have included a new section, "Zeroing in on Specific Worries" that makes this book especially topical. 5-0 out of 5 stars This New Edition Really is New!
I've seen a lot of second edition books that didn't seem to have much new in them at all. The authors did a masterful job of refreshing Overcoming Anxiety For Dummies. In addition to spiffing everything up, they also included a brand new section on worries inherent in our modern day world--things like terrorism, financial collapses, pandemics, and natural disasters. Kudos!!

Product Description
Anyone who’s ever lost sleep over an unreturned phone call or the neighbor’s Lexus had better read Alain de Botton’s irresistibly clear-headed new book, immediately. For in its pages, a master explicator of our civilization and its discontents turns his attention to the insatiable quest for status, a quest that has less to do with material comfort than with love. To demonstrate his thesis, de Botton ranges through Western history and thought from St. Augustineto Andrew Carnegie and Machiavelli to Anthony Robbins.

Whether it’s assessing the class-consciousness of Christianity or the convulsions of consumer capitalism, dueling or home-furnishing, Status Anxiety is infallibly entertaining. And when it examines the virtues of informed misanthropy, art appreciation, or walking a lobster on a leash, it is not only wise but helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Speaking of status, de Botton is almost in a class by himself
I wish I had discovered Alain de Botton sooner, but better late than never. His erudition is remarkable, his perception is acute, and his writing is marvelously phenomenologically rich yet lucid.Best of all, in this book he tackles a fundamentally important topic, namely our need for social status and our anxiety over our status falling short.

This is a book which must be read attentively in its entirety, and I indeed found it hard to put down, but perhaps I can still highlight some key points to give a feel for the subject matter:

- Because we judge ourselves according to how others judge us, one of our basic needs is the love of the world. This is despite the fact that the judgments of others are frequently shallow and misguided, and the criteria for judgment have varied across cultures and history.

- We take our social status as an indicator of how much we're loved, or can expect to be loved, by others.

- We determine our status by comparison with a reference group of other people, not in absolute terms. That means that progress of our reference group doesn't necessarily improve our individual status, and may even diminish it.

- Unlike the days when status was largely inherited, the meritocratic notion that anyone can achieve anything, and the related assumption of social mobility, gives hope to those who wish to rise in status, but it also results in self-blame when we fail. This is despite the fact that achievement is greatly influenced by factors outside our control (ie, luck).

- Our self-esteem is also affected by our achievement relative to our own expectations. This implies that, if we can't achieve more, it may make sense to lower our expectations (however outlandish that may sound).Likewise, if we're inspired by the success stories of others, but we fail, those stories may worsen our self-esteem.And of course the mass media exacerbates these problems by constantly encouraging us to "aim high" and throwing rags-to-riches success stories in our faces.

- The poor were once honored as an integral and productive part of society, or at least they weren't viewed negatively. This changed with the rise of meritocracy, with material wealth becoming the primary measure of merit/status, and with the poor thus being considered deserving of low status and snobbish derision.Social Darwinism took this attitude further with the view that the poor deserve to be weeded out of society.

- We're often uncertain or mistaken about what will make us happy. For example, the pleasure provided by material acquisitions is usually fleeting, whereas we expected it to be sustained or even permanent.Likewise, in envisioning careers, we often make the mistake of focusing on the positives while downplaying the negatives.

- We can at least partly control status anxiety by learning to become our own judges, being attentive to how art subverts prevailing status norms, seeing our fallible shared humanity through art which depicts tragedy, using comedy to underminine pretensions, remaining aware of our individual and collective mortality, focusing on collective rather than individual success, and orienting ourselves towards nonmaterialistic values which lead to richer and more balanced lives. These are generally difficult things to do, and only partly effective even in combination, but better to make the effort rather than just muddle along with the herd.

I very highly recommend this book, especially to people who detect a tradeoff in their lives between seeking/maintaining status versus being generally fulfilled, and are troubled by that predicament. This book provides an elegantly multifaceted exploration of this terrain, and it's especially rewarding to readers who are themselves erudite enough to be familiar with the diverse spectrum of examples from social and intellectual history which de Botton references. As some reviewers have noted, de Botton could have expanded the book, such as by drawing more on non-Western perspectives, but it makes more sense to attend to what the book offers rather than lament about what it leaves out -- and it offers plenty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alain De Botton rocks
Oh this book is sooo good. Who amongst us doesn't want to be socially accepted and celebrated by our peers and if we cannot get that, feel miserable about it?As De Botton says much better than I ever could : "the story of our quest for love from this world - is a more secret and shameful tale" and Adam Smith : "To what purpose is all the toil and bustle of this world? To be observed, to be attended to, to be taken notice of with sympathy, complacency, and approbation"
Read it and re-read it over and over. It has nuggets and nuggets of good thoughtful prose and quotes. Also is a great introduction to different philosophers from Aristotle to Nietsche. I think this book is a classic and is definitely a permanent part of my shelf of most beloved books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I thought this book was pretty good. I never considered several aspects of my life as already providing the needed perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why You Want to Keep up with the Joneses and How to Stop and not be Anxious
Allain de Botton address the issue of status anxiety or the feeling that we are not doing as well as we should in comparison to our peers, neighbors or some other reference group. This feeling can appear as a low level of discomfort when you find out your college buddy is on another cruise while you've never been on one, to strong anxiety and even depression when you see yourself as a loser in comparison to others. Now, these comparisons are all in relative terms:you don't feel jealous of Bill Gates because his wealth is in the stratosphere and therefore incomparable, but you do feel jealous of Bob in the next cubicle because he makes $10,000 more than you and you've both been with the company for five years.

How do you address these feelings?Via five ways - via philosophy, politics, religion, art and bohemia. Each of these provides a reframing of the relationship of the individual to the values of the larger society. For example, politics reveals to us that the markers of contemporary success, which we may not have achieved, are ideological constructs of the ruling class, constructs which may have had no vlaue 50 years ago and may have none 50 years from now.Religion in general places value on the individual as an individual rather than in his or her accomplishments and possesions, and thereby relieves the pressure to meet the expectations of the larger society. There are similar effective palliatives provided by the other disciplines and the bohemian attitude.

If you suffer from status anxiety, as you probably do, read this book and get some major relief.

5-0 out of 5 stars very thought provoking
i am very busy and have no time to read non professional subjects except on vacations. i read two non work related books a year. this is my fourthAlain de Botton title. so i suppose in a way you could say i am illiterate although i have over four years of post college education. call me what you will, de Botton has again turned my world view upside down. OK i am not being very specific. let's just say i finally understand some of the things in my world that never made sense to me before. YMMV. good luck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book was a good help for good ways to destress. I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to everyone even if you don't think you have anxiety. Most people do and really don't know they do., There are some very good ways to relax and everyone need to relax.Marilyn

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise and Well Done
As another reviewer commented, this is in a simpler form than the Anxiety and Phobia Workbook. This will likely be a plus for many who don't like to read.Overall, solid and well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, calming book
This book is great for someone looking for help right away. I also purchased "When Panic Attacks" by David Burns, which is more of a workbook to help you get to the bottom of your anxiety over time. That is fine, but I didn't have a week to work my way through that book. I needed to get calm NOW, after experiencing a sudden rash of panic attacks while driving. I didn't know how to handle these attacks and needed some tools to help me get back in the car so I could get to work and live my life. Therefore, I found that "Coping with Anxiety" was exactly what I needed.

This book was easy to use because you could skip around the book and read chapters that could create an immediate impact for you. This gave me some quick techniques to help me cope. I marked several sections in the book and carried it in my car (just in case I needed some help and affirmations) until I resolved my panic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise Help For Dealing With Anxiety
While one of the author's other books - "The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook, Fourth Edition" - is well worth a read, this one has the advantage of being much simpler and more concise, which in my opinion makes it more user-friendly and easier to digest.

None of that is intended to imply that this book is lacking in any way. Indeed, it's very comprehensive, informative, and straightforward in its presentation, making the subject accessible and the suggestions easy to understand and implement. The reader's options for helping them cope with anxiety disorder - or even just understanding how to face the everyday stresses of life - are, just as the title promises, simple and provide real relief.

Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars good advice, but very basic
The advice in this book is good--learn to relax, identify mental distortions, eat right, exercise, simplify your life.If you haven't been in therapy, or the idea of acknowledging your anxiety and doing something about it is new to you, I think this would be a great book.As someone who's dealt with severe anxiety for a prolonged period of time and explored various treatments, however, this book is not particularly helpful (I've been told to do yoga so many times it's almost a cliche, and yes, I've done yoga). So really, I think whether this book will be helpful is a matter of the severity of your problem and your previous experience with treatment. ... Step-by-step guides to self-improvement that introduce the methods of the highly regarded cognitive behavioral therapy technique to help readers conquer a broad range of disabling conditions--from worry to body image problems to obsessive compulsive disorder and more.

The accessible, straightforward, and practical books in the Overcoming series treat disorders by changing unhelpful patterns of behavior and thought. This positive, pragmatic approach is popular with therapists and patients alike.

If you are sure that your only problem is social anxiety, than it is great book with a sharp focus on this topic.
