5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Learning How to Face Your Fears
I have social phobia that developed from having a voice disorder. It had held me back professionally until I decided to change careers and go to graduate school. The idea of giving presentations in school was terrifying, but I was tired of the fear holding me back. I learned biofeedback and read this book before starting graduate school. I am now in my last semester and credit this book with getting me there.

This book will help you understand social phobia and how your mind and body respond to the fear. This understanding combined with the activities will help you face social challenges that you set for yourself. This is a very comprehensive book that helps you set goals, identify how your body responds to fear, identify your unrealistic beliefs, learn how to handle exposure to your fears, communication and social skills, stress reduction, how to handle set backs, and medications.

These skills will also transfer to handling other fears as well. Yesterday, despite my fear of heights, I was able to participate in a high ropes course activity where I climbed a pole and walked across a log that was high in the air. I was able to identify unrealistic thoughts that were keeping me from participating and knew that I could continue after the initial fear. It was fantastic! I wish the same for everyone who has experienced fear that limits their lives. Bottom line - get the book and start living your life again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for social anxiety sufferers
I was given this book to read years ago while I was a patient at an anxiety treatment center in Chicago. As I was suffering from daily panic attacks and social anxiety, I immediately identified with the very specific and well documented subject matter in this book.

What I like most about this book is that it is interactive and provides questionnaires for the reader to fill out to help identify what your anxiety problems are and to plan the most effective treatment course.Additionally, there are many coping skills that are easy to apply, as well as a thorough breakdown of cognitive-behavioral techniques.

A tremendous part of my recovery from extreme social anxiety were many of the techniques and education that I gained from reading this book.As an anxiety sufferer, this book is a valuable resource that is helpful to reference over and over as you begin your recovery.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reader
I have read several other books that offered hope but no real help.
This book gave me my life back. It worked for me. I judged this book by its cover and it sat on my shelf for a month while I read other books that did nothing.
I am so glad I bought, and finally read this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Agree - very harmful!
These types of books are perfect for someone who is already obsessive about their social anxiety disorder and convinced that there is something wrong with themselves, and that they need change immediately in order to become acceptable to society.Unfortunately - this is a harmful combination!

I would not recommend this book to anyone - it only made me more self conscious and depressed while dealing with social anxiety. Now that I have accepted myself I have finally achieved relief.

Instead - i would recommend a person read books such as "The Power of Now" by Eckart Tolle..This is the best way for a person to find internal happiness, instead of that through others..

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Success Story
This book helped me tremendously.A large part was how Berent gets you to look at yourself and understand that this is a behavior that can be changed through self-analysis and practice.I read the book about 3 years ago. Before that, I, without really knowing it, avoided social situations or talking in front of people at work. This was hindering my career.Once I realized this, using the book, I planned a change in behavior and started to overcome some of my fears. This lead to a promotion about 2 years ago, and then, near the end of last year, I was able to seize a once in a lifetime opportunity to start my own business. So far, so good! Thanks Jon!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved me
With this book and the Beyond Shyness self-help audio program, I pulled myself up out of a world of shame and guilt and frustration into a world of logic, compassion and clarity at a level I've never knew existed. I have a totally new understanding of my fellow man and have virtually rid myself of the critical, judgmental mindset that used to isolate me from anyone knew.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is good !!
i have read this book some months ago and its impression is still on me.when i have to make a decisuion i also think what this book will advice me.i had been a SP/SAD many years and read a lot of books and this is ,i think ,one of the 3 best . its style isnt too clinicaly . it also help me to understand things that related to other problem of mine which i didnt knew that i suffer from (dependent personality). when you read it doesnt make you to fill that you have a defect in your brain but that you have some wrong behavior that you have to change(for your own good). it also have good advices for parents of shy people-something that i didnt see in other books.

very recommende.buy it yesterday !

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and helpful!
I am a mother of two young children, ages 5 and 7.While they are relatively well-adapted to their school experiences, I wanted to learn more about the issues of anxiety, self-esteem and bullying before they are a presence in our lives.Ms. Mayer's book did an excellent and well-organized job of presenting the problems that children have and how to approach these issues. Her focused and thoughful style has helped me understand these school issues and I believe, given me better strategies for confronting school challenges!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, targeted, practical solutions to issues many children face in school.
As a mother of 3 and psychotherapist who works with school-age clients, I am very pleased to have found this invaluable resource. This book manages to not only to describe and explain a great number of issues and their causes, but to give creative and practical approaches to dealing with them.

I have a bookshelf heavy with books specifically on anxiety, bullying, panic attacks - but this book has somehow managed to pull wisdom on this wide spectrum together in an organized and accessible fashion. The exercises include controlled breathing and imagery in addition to ways to talk to your child about the problem. It's so important to recognize the mind body connection in anxiety issues and this is at the heart of the book.

It also recognizes the importance of nutrition in the equation.Who knew bananas may help reduce anxiety?I didn't!

Another gem - making a little album of successful people who overcame the same challenges your child is facing. My dyslexic daughter found doing this a real eye opener.

I rarely take the time to recommend books online - but this had to be an exception, as I have truly found it to be an absolute gem.

Take a look inside - but just briefly the book covers helping children cope with anxiety, separation, bullying, phobias, panic attacks, homework, tests, fitting in, perfectionism, building self-esteem, conflict at home, learning and physical challenges.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing the big point
The author has some great advice on behavioral modifications, adaptions and importance of nutrition and rest.Unfortunately, she doesn't question the basic premise of school structure.Homework has tripled for most ages since 1981, school days have lengthened, and lunch periods are often reduced to only 20 minutes. Is it really necessary for us to CREATE this much stress for our kids in the first place? Is there no one wondering if this stress is optimal?Performance is not increasing and there is growing evidence that over burdening our children has an inverse correlation to performance.Kids burn out and lose the love of learning. They gobble lunches and aren't mindful of what they eat, leading to obesity.Homework loads reduce the amount of time for play and physical activities, also increasing obesity. The increase in "on task" time reduces the time needed for consolidation and also impedes learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Effective
As a mother of a 7 year old daughter who is already a bit Type A, this book was a valuable resource to me in channeling her desire to excel in a healthy way.

I found the exercises at the end of each section to be especially helpful. It enabled me to actually role play certain issues with her and guide her effectively through them.

As a health and fitness professional one of my favorite sections was the one on nutrition and how that effects a child's brain as well as their moods. I also thought the chapter on getting physical with your child (exercise) was right on target and great advice considering our current issues with childhood obesity in this country.

In summary this is an excellent resource for any parent who wants to make the most of these early developmental years in our children's lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming School Anxiety
In an age where homework has tripled and children spend their free time in all sorts of planned activities the pressures to keep up and perform better than their peers can be staggering. As a parent this book gave me the tools to be able to recognize and understand how to properly deal with everyday anxieties my child might face.It is a must read and a great reference guide for any parent with school age children. ... Product Description
Effective Tools for Parents

Does your child cling to you whenever you try to leave? Does he or she react strongly to the thought of being left alone? Psychologists call this kind of behavior separation anxiety, and it’s usually a normal part of your child’s developmental process—one that they outgrow. Sometimes, though, extreme or persistent kinds of separation anxiety can make life difficult for both you and your child. In some cases, separation anxiety issues can lead a child to be reluctant to get ready for school or, worse, to simply refuse to go at all. This behavior, called school refusal, comes with its own set of challenges. This book shows you how to identify when your child’s separation anxiety or school refusal is more than just a phase and offers effective tools that you can use to manage your child’s anxiety. Real-life stories about other children facing these challenges will help you keep your situation in perspective and remember that, with patience and persistence, your child will overcome his or her anxiety.

After reading this book, you will be able to:

· Identify your child’s unique safety needs· Empower him or her with simple and effective coping skills· Guide your child to better sleep, more comfortable alone time, and regular school attendance· Monitor your progress and tap additional resources as you need them

"Eisen and Engler have written an outstanding guide for parents of children who suffer from separation anxiety or school refusal. This well-written book is the first of its type, describing practical, step-by-step strategies similar to those that have been studied extensively in anxiety research centers around the world. In addition to being a valuable resource for parents, this book will be very useful to teachers and mental health practitioners who work with anxious children."—Martin M. Antony, Ph.D., ABPP, director of the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre at St. Joseph’s Healthcare and professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University, both in Hamilton, ON

"Separation anxiety can derail a child’s normal development at any age. Moreover, it can make life miserable for that child’s parents and family—not only the child. This book helps parents navigate the murky waters of separation anxiety by giving them a roadmap and a set of proven and effective strategies to help them deal with it and, yes, even to prevent it. In the hands of caring and motivated parents, it is a veritable tour de force. It is a well written, engaging, and eminently practical book. Parents (and their separation anxious children) will be thanking Eisen and Engler for years to come for their sage and helpful advice."—Thomas H. Ollendick, Ph.D., university distinguished professor and director of the Child Study Center in the Department of Psychology at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA

"A highly user-friendly guide to help parents understand how to help children cope more effectively with separation anxiety and school refusal. Eisen and Engler are true leaders in the field of child anxiety. Their use of real life case illustrations really brings these evidence based skills home to parents and children. I would highly recommend this book to our own patients, to parents, to clinicians or graduate students working with children and families, and to all others who want to understand specific ways to help children with anxiety issues in ways that promotes their positive development."—Donna B. Pincus, Ph.D., research associate professor and director of the Child and Adolescent Fear and Anxiety Treatment Program in the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University

"Eisen and Engler provide straightforward advice for parents of a child who is afraid of separation or afraid of school. Separation anxiety is a typical step in development for most children, but when it is interfering and present in older youngsters, then it merits attention. This step-by-step approach for parents, potentially used in conjunction with a therapist, offers sound advice and guidance that is consistent with the research evidence. The book is well-informed, organized, readable, and rich with examples."—Philip C. Kendall, Ph.D., ABPP, Laura H. Carnell Professor of Psychology and Director of the Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA

"Eisen and Engler have provided a wealth of information for parents about the do’s and don’ts of helping their child with separation anxiety or school refusal . Clear, easy language, practical exercises, and real life examples are all based on the authors’ hands-on experience and scientifically proven methods. This book is an essential resource for parents who are stuck in the binds produced by a separation anxious child and for therapists who are trying to provide an empirically validated program." —Ronald M. Rapee, Ph.D., director of the Macquarie University Anxiety Research Unit and author of Helping Your Anxious Child

"Eisen and Engler have written a clear, detailed guide for parents who are striving to support each child’s autonomy and confidence. Supported by research and clinical insight, this book offers specific strategies to help children achieve healthy separation, while respectfully acknowledging the emotional lives of children and the need for parents to take care of themselves. Parenting is the most humbling effort, and this book supports this most important relationship in a child’s life."—Gerard Costa, Ph.D., director of the YCS Institute for Infant and Preschool Mental Health in East Orange, NJ ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Help for understanding
I felt like this book helped me better understand the reasons behind the anxiety and some of the methods did bring some relief. However I think with younger children it's always a challenge toreally cure serios anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
When my son was four my husband and I left him for 5 days with some family members so we could go on a cruise with my sister and her husband. It was the first time we had been apart for more than an overnight stay.Needless to say the experience was not a good one for him, and since that time he has been cautious about being apart from us.

No matter how much we reassured him, or tried to comfort and address his insecurities, it seemed the problem gradually got worse instead of better. He would go to Pre-K without much fuss, but spending time with a sitter, or the night with family members began to be more and more of a challenge. He started Kindergarten this year and every morning was a struggle. He'd be crying to stay with me and I would try to ensure his safety and the importance of school, all while struggling with my own tears. It was a horrible way to start the day and by 9am I was completely emotionally drained.

With no clear reason for this down slide and being at my wits end, I sought the advice of a dear friend who happens to be a Psychology Professor. He sent me this book and I have never been more grateful for any gift.

At first I was concerned that the book wasn't going to help as it didn't seem to be geared towards my son's specific issues. He doesn't fall into any one category; he is more of an inconsistent combination of the case samples they have compiled. But I read the book, highlighted the things that applied to my son and began to work with my husband on getting our life back.

The most helpful thing about this book was getting my husband and me on the same page. His approach to dealing with our son was vastly different from mine, and it turns out neither of us were correct. It has been a long hard road and the book had forewarned us that once we started implementing what we learned it would get worse before it got better, they weren't kidding. But with the help of this book, and the support of my family and his teacher, we are going on two weeks of not one tear before school. He also spent the night at my moms last weekend without any fight or fuss, without any need for reassurances.

I thought this book was written in a manner that was easy to understand and follow along.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a child suffering from school refusal or separation anxiety.

Cherise Everhard, March 2009

3-0 out of 5 stars It served the purpose
I have a child who wouldn't enter the school building for whatever reason.I read the book and it did give me some useful tips.I still think Boundaries for Kids was the best book I ever read, and using some of the skills I learned in that book and pairing them up with this book it worked out and he is now going into school on his own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, but use along with a therapist.
Helping Your Child Overcome Seperation Anxiety or Shcool Refusal is a sound, practical book for helping parents learn to help their children overcome seperation anxiety in many different forms and settings.I will enjoy implementing the techniques with my clients.

I gave this book only four stars because while it is easy for a clinician to read and fill in the behavior modification and coping skill gaps they left out, it will not be so easy for many parents.

Parents who have anxious children are advised to get this book, but share it with a trained clinician/therapist.It is helpful in that it gives you an idea of what your child's anxious situations and behaviors are, how you have been handling them as a parent (personality type) and what safety situations your children prefer. It will be easier to implement with a trained person who can give you even further techniques, feedback and moral support when you need it. ... This book is just plain awesome!Whether you have anxiety or not and it is mild or extreme, this book is for everyone. It should be a required reading for all! What a great outlook on life and simple steps to make it better.Lucinda has truly created an inspiring read!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Has Changed My LIFE!!!!!
At almost 20 years old, I've been suffering from anxiety for more than a decade. Because of my anxiety, I've been moody, depressed, fearful, sabotaging my relationships with others, experimented with harmful behavior, etc. It has led me to almost killing myself more than I can count from all the pain and sufferage... Well no more. My parents and I talked and we agreed to visit a good therapist. I went to see her and she recommended this book for my anxiety. At first, I thought, "Great. More money down the drain and nothing will resolve..." but boy was I wrong. As I kept reading chapter after chapter, I've developed and learned some great coping skills and my anxiety-as well as my depression-has subsided dramatically in less than a month. I am not kidding you, this is THE best book I've ever read in my entire life, and it's no exaggeration. :) Because of this book, my thought proccess has changed, my perception about life has changed, and I am more happy, calm, and more mature and peaceful within myself and the rest of the world. It's like cognitive therapy in a book... This type of therapy is PERFECT for individuals who suffer from anxiety and depression, because it helps to change the way we think and thus, help us cope better in life. Lucinda has wow'ed me with her personal stories (The painful cramps, the heart palpilations... Sound familiar?) as well as stories from other people who suffered the same way that I have. Thanks to this book, I am able to get rid of the emotional shackles that has put me down and led me to live a life that is plaqued with fear and melacholy... The things that onced bothered me and sent me into panic mode now doesn't bother me anymore... This book is THAT good and I beg everyone to at least give it one read before going after unsafe alternatives like anti anxiety medications that will only make you feel worse than better. Anxiety is a state of mind... Only YOU can control your anxiety, and on the same token, only YOU can make yourself happy. Happiness is a choice... Remember that. Thank you, Lucinda!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars CHANGED MY LIFE!!!
This book has literally changed my life. I had panic attacks so severely it was almost to the point where I wouldn't leave my house alone in fear of having a panic attack. She is a great author and made me look at my panic attacks completely different than I had before. This book saved me thousands of dollars that I would have spent in therapy sessions getting this information. I still may have not received this valuable of information from therapy, as this woman experienced panic attacks herself and can relate. This book is written first hand by someone who experienced what I used to and you probably still experience everyday. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to heal from panic attacks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-Help
This book is a good self-help book with those who have anxieties and/or depression.Very good reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you suffer from anxiety and depression, start here!!!
I read this book several years ago while in the throws of a massive depression that was preceded by a prolonged period of anxiety. It had definitely gotten to a clinical point and I was not functioning at all, so I disagree with the one star review that says if you are clinically or severely depressed, this book is not for you! I, too, believed that Lucinda and her clientele were not as far gone as I and that no one could help me! I imagined myself being admitted to the psych ward and never coming back. Well, this book was of tremendous help and I still recommend it to friends and family members who are suffering from any kind of anxiety, depression, neurosis or paranoia. I have FULLY recovered and lead a successful life - I am on to all the Law of Attraction books which are helping me to take my life to the next level - I have also just ordered Lucinda's other book Life Without Limits. I no longer take any medication at all and I was SEVERELY depressed after being SEVERELY anxious, I had had my first panic attack at the age of eleven which started a 'scary period' that lasted for three full years of daily panic. Then I had auditory and visual hallucinations when I became depressed as an adult, so it was BAD...but I rarely think of myself as this person anymore and feel I have left that nightmare behind me. Lucinda gives you the courage to know you can heal permanently by telling her own story of emotional breakdown and how she healed herself from the obsessive, scary thoughts that used to plague her.If you are suffering from anxiety and depression, no matter how severe, start here!!! You may decide that you want to take medication or look into more extensive alternative therapies and nutritional therapies, but there are so many options available to you, there is no need to suffer!!! No matter how far down you have gone, it is amazing how the mind/body can recover. I originally bought the entire Attacking Anxiety Program and have also read The Mood Cure, Seven Weeks to Emotional Healing, many of the Abraham-Hicks books, Secrets of Success, The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks all which I found immensely helpful. There are so many great self help books out there right now, it's truly a revelation! Onward and upward... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent examples of healing in action
This book was designed to discuss how EMDR(Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) could heal certain psychological stressors/traumas, "stuck ideas" if you will in people. Anxiety, being called stupid by your parents, horrific dating experiences, rape, abuse, car accidents, bad associations (you think your neighbor is the boogeyman) are all examples of problems therapists are faced with and use this wonderful technique to help their clients.
I am a licensed psychologist who had to undergo EMDR for a bad car accident and within 2 sessions I was able to drive without crying. In trianing, they make you as a therapist undergo what it feels like and I have to tell you I love it. When I am faced with an issue, I insist on having this and it moves you quickly through your problems. Instead of talking endlessly -you go from thought, to thought, from feeling to feeling from memory to memory and at the end, your body tension is gone. You have a renewed perspective, healthier, relaxed, confident and ready to face the world.
The book discusses cases in which the authors faced and how it healed. Excellent case examples and research are cited. A very usable book by both clinicians and clients. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and if you need help, please consider this with a therapist you trust.

An excellent introduction to the history of the development of EMDR as well as an orientation to the basic process with multiple applications and examples. Brief chapters and the writer's style make it a must read for anyone dealing with troublesome emotional issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars EMDR: The Breakthrough Therapy for Overcoming Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma
The book was in excellent condition. (I bought a used copy.) It came promptly and in very good condition. I am enjoying reading about this relatively new approach to dealing with psychological deficits of long-standing. The vendor of this book renders excellent service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Could it be a breakthrough?
I'm only a quarter of the way through this book, but if the therapy holds all the promise portrayed in the stories this author tells, it could be a major breakthrough. For the book, it's an easy read, without a lot of technical detail, and does a great job of describing the therapy and the thought and research behind it in a light and readable style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
Excellent introduction and clear and competent explanations of theories, practices, cases, and scripts of EMDR.Marvelous science and even miraculous recoveries of serious varied cases.Greatly appreciated gift of Shapiro and other practicing psychotherapists.EMDR will become a household word.Highly recommended! ... Rollo May
The Meaning of Anxiety

(New York: Ronald Press, 1950)
(New York: Norton, 1977, revised edition)

This is a helpful book by an American psychotherapist.
May was looking for causes of anxiety when he wrote this,
but it still has some good insights into existential anxiety.

Similar books will be found on the Internet:
"Our Existential Predicament Bibliography".

James Leonard Park, existential philosopher.

5-0 out of 5 stars "But the picture is not inevitably black." (p.14)
All famous descriptions of anxieties are explored. This book is for the storm chaser of our inner selves.Like it or not, we're all living in a methaphorical Kansas. This book helps make sense out of our "real" environment.Sometimes one twister after another.Othertimes several mega-twisters all at once!

A quote from P. 236 explains why my supervisor puts so much emphasis on logic and scientific method. When people subscribe to Theory X (the usual and sometimes necessary case), here's what's involved in terms of anxiety (heathly forms of it...apparently):

"The psychological helplessness arising out of this contradiction often leads the individual to cling to the illusion of rational power under the 'anonymous authorities of public opinion,' 'science,' and so forth...THE ILLUSION OF RATIONALITY TEMPORARILY ALLAYS ANXIETY BY SUPPRESSING THE CONTRADICTIONS."

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing experience
Reading this book helped change my life. It gave me a new insight into my own life and made me start looking at things rationally instead of through the tinted lense that is anxiety. The case-studies are mind-blowing and really help one understand the core emotions that underly all people. I have specific underlined passages I often refer back to and think to myself, "there is no other way to describe what the author is writing other than pure genius."

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe Im not...
I used to avoid people and any kind of social gathering. I was never painfully shy but I thought my avoidance was just a coping method for my social phobia or shyness or whatever it was. I think this book is for those who sweat bullets and turn red when they talk to a person, that was never me. Painfully Shy is for those who are painfully shy. Period. If yours is a slight social phobia or avoidance this book is probably not for you. I was never told I was shy. I just avoided people. Even though this books tells you a lot and it is good, it didnt help me with my situation. Or maybe I had already read many books about it and even shedded my shyness/avoidance to a great extend by the time I got this book so if you are visibly shy or at the beginning of your change process, read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Painfully Shy
As I am writing you today, I consider myself blessed I read this book. I know most people would agree that by reading this book you won't be magically healed. It will take time, effort and your acceptance. You will have to work on your own progress. However, I realize that in my case I had to learn to make friends with my bullies as a second skill. I have learned that in order to live our lives fully, it starts by one searching for the right treatment for yourself.

If you are like me, a shy person who felt bullied all the time, I suggest you also try: "How to Stop Being Teased and Bullied without Really Trying" by Izzy Kalman. It will teach you other helpful skills.

I hope you, like most of us who are in this journey, will find your way to the happy, successful, fulfilled life you deserve and want.

Best regards,

David R.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth reading ...
just like the title, it's a book totally to read at least for one time to know about or solve the social anxiety problem. believe it or not, you will feel better after reading, even if you are not in such serious situation as described by the author, the book will actually calm your heart, teach you how to be a nicer person with a maturer heart :-) and of course, not only discouvering deeper into yourself, but also you will get to know more about others' real thoughts which can solve some misunderstanding in judging people. basically i feel this book tries to change a person's view toward the world, through which it also changes a person's social behavior. Some encouraging examples in the book are very helpful to achieve that. It's my first time to write a review here, hope that meaningful :p

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
After years of trying to fight against "my condition", I made most progress once I tried to accept it. I agree very much now with the approach recommended in this book, and re-read it every now and then to remind myself and check that I'm still applying it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest...
Painfully Shy really did not ease my struggle. I bought the book on the premises that I might be a social phobic, but I was still as lost after reading it as I was before. Some sections were helpful, but it just wasn't enough. I was sort of disappointed. But it wasn't a total loss. ... Read more

Product Description
We like to think of childhood as a carefree time, but for the many children with anxiety disorders it's anything but. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the most common anxiety disorders in children. It causes intense worry and anxiety that can disrupt emotional, academic, and social development. The good news is that GAD is highly treatable and children can be taught to manage and even overcome it.

Child psychologist, Timothy A. Sisemore specializes in helping anxious children and in I Bet I Won't Fret he gives kids fun and engaging exercises to help them relieve anxiety and worry symptoms, change anxiety-inducing self-talk, and communicate about their feelings. These activities can be done on their own or as part of a therapy program.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful - lots of activities....
My 11 yo son, who has Asperger's Syndrome, is working through this book. His worries range from not getting enough sleep to asteroids hitting earth, or germs on his hands, or global warming's effect on snow, and so on."I Bet I Won't Fret" is a very useful book on many levels.

First, the fact there is a book designed just for kids to work on anxiety helped my son believe me when I said, "Many kids have anxiety, it's not just you."It was less stressful just to know and believe he wasn't alone.

Second, it is written so that kids can do it independently, they set up their reward (it is a behaviorial approach and so includes the idea of rewards for working through the book) with their parent and then can do the exercises independently.I'd say 4th/5th through middle school.

Third, there are a variety of activities to choose from - learning to recognize stressors, analyzing how others handle worries, changing self-talk, developing an anti-anxious plan, relaxation and breathing, problem solving, talking back to worries, and so on.This is helpful because every child is different, and some strategies will be more useful than others for any given child. There are bound to be a few real gems for any child in this book.

I would definitely recommend going over the exercises with your child, however, for the insights you can gain, and also to model your own responses to the questions or examples.

The author says most kids with anxiety disorders benefit from seeing a counselor, and that this book is intended as a companion to therapy so that parents can help their kids at home.We are not seeing a counselor since I am still looking for one who is experienced with Asperger's Syndrome, but even working through it independently, my son has made some gains.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Great book, very well written and nurturing. Different from other social anxiety books I've read in that it's not simply a 'work book' that gives you a bunch of exercises to try and 'fix' you, rather she helps instill a positive attitude about shyness/social anxiety and unique ways to approach and think about this condition. Out of three books I've read on the topic, this one has had the strongest impact on helping me achieve a higher sense of confidence and acceptance. Although it sounds paradoxical, by accepting your shyness/social anxiety as a part of you instead of a negative aspect of yourself to be controlled, you will develop a deeper sense of calm and stability in your life, and so therefore will be less intimidated and anxious in social situations. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has truly saved me!
This book has absolutely saved my life. Now when I get that "what do they think of me" feeling, I'm able to just 'push it out.'I feel free, I feel lighter.I've been in therapy for years and it's always been about my "connection" to people, or lack there of.I was too busy in my own head to connect with others! It really helps to know that it was/is social anxiety. It's OK not be perfect. It's OK not to know everything. If I miss something, it's OK.I'm still a wonderful human being!

Anyone who wonders what others are thinking about them or overanalyzes social situations could benefit from this book.Just imagine how much better you'll feel without all that negative chatter in your head!

2-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Guide? Not exactly
If I am reading a book about how to overcome shyness and the physical symptoms I would have expected it to teach you such exercises. The majority of this book tells you why you are shy and that it is not a bad thing you should pretty much just accept it and get over it. If you want to know why you are shy and what may or may not have happened to you in the past to make you more susecptable then read this book. If you want to know steps or practices to avoid while raising your child to prevent them from becoming shy then read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A lesser re-hash of more helpful books
I was hoping this book would explore shyness in more depth and reveal deeper insights about its roots in the psyche. It was rated well, so I bought it, and I've found it hasn't really helped my understanding much.I feel like I could have writtten a lot of it from the knowledge I already have.I would recommend Feeling Good(if you haven't read it) by David Burns over this because I think it is a more direct and practical guide that more broadly and thoroughly addresses anxiety and depression.

This book may be okay for someone who is addressing his/her shyness for the first time, but besides a lot of beating around the bush about how it's okay to be shy, the true insight was lacking. The practical steps to take in learning to cope with shyness were less potent versions of exercises better described in other books.I would not call it "a comprehensive guide to gaining social confidence" and think that is a promise it doesn't keep despite it's good intention.

5-0 out of 5 stars HELP WITH SHYNESS

I purchased this book to aid in an upcoming flight after not flying for 2 1/2years.I was hoping it would help. I was wrong. This book is basically a published infomercial for the author's website. It was a HUGE disappointment and not helpful in the least.I'm amazed that anyone would publish it.I couldn't finish it and moved quickly on to a different book that I had purchased at the same time and found that one to be filled with information of use to me.Skip this one.Trust me.

This book is very helpful for someone who has panic attacks. Geert knows firsthand what it is like and who but someone who has experienced panic, should write a book about how to stop it.His advice is easy to understand and put into practice in your own life. I have had panic for about 40 years and have read a lot of self help books but this one is the best, by far.I use his techniques and they do work.I have not had a panic attack for over a year.I am driving again too, thanks to this book and Geert's advice. My mantra now is "Whatever happens, it's ok."Read this book and get the help that you need with panic attacks and anxiety.

Product Description
Lightning-fast test anxiety reduction plus 12-18 percentile gains for high school and college students on standardized tests.

The Tame Test Anxiety training CD uses the advanced active control protocol, which reduces test anxiety for most students in just two 30 minute training sessions and improves school test performance. The active control method has produced substantial anxiety reduction in six consecutive research studies, and has been shown to improve test scores in four studies.

The active control treatment is a modified cognitive-behavior desensitization accelerated by stronger components. Vigorous stretch, tense, deep breath, release relax, and suggestion (STARS) sequences replace simple relaxation suggestions, to curtail anxiety, and imagined interest and a sense of achieve replace the passively pleasant alternatives. The STARS sequences are used to produce a comfortable state in which you are more focused and more receptive adaptive suggestions.

You imagine an especially interesting activity, and then, by suggestion, students imagine being interested in a series of eight learning, review, and testing scenes. Additional STARS sequences are included between scenes, to curb anxiety and to reinstate the calmness and prepare you for the next scenes. The vivid experience of release and safety at the conclusion of each testing scene conditions participants to perceive the situation as safe and no longer frightening.

The intervention is thus a combination of active physical participation to control anxiety and adaptive attitudes to improve your outlook. The procedure reframes the threatening situation as an interesting one, as in cognitive therapies, and then follows through with two additional steps: You experience yourself being interested, and the sequence finishes with a sense of well-being and relaxation.

Ordinarily, it would be far-fetched to propose that highly test anxious students could take pleasure in anything remotely connected to a test. And yet, in the special sequencing here, students can and do imagine enjoying learning, organizing, and then showing their mastery on a test. And after students imagine being interested in the scenes, it is a short step to feeling that interest in the actual situations.

Active control training has been found to consistently improve test scores. Twelve highly anxious college freshman attained an average three quarters of a letter grade gain in our 2004 research, compared to untreated students. Twenty anxious nursing students recently attained an average 60 point gain on the standardized hesi test, which is about a 12 percentile advantage, compared to untreated students.

So far as we know, active control is one of the strongest, fastest, and most reliable anxiety-reduction training protocols available anywhere.

We recommend listening to the training CD twice, and then again as you feel warranted. Benefits are expected to continue over several years, with only occasional reviews. The Training CD imprints and conditions a more confident outlook, and you do not need to review the CD prior to each test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good experience
I work as a counselor at a small liberal arts school. Several years ago we were looking for some good resources to aid students with extreme test taking anxiety, so we gave Dr Driscolls program a try.We didnt base our decision on whether to continue to use it on just what students said, but we actually followed how their GPA's were affected once they started using this CD.We were very happy with the results as we could document positive results with those students that used the program as directed. That was several years ago, but we continue to use this program today. It is our primary intervention with students who complain of test taking anxiety. You have to use the program as directed, but if you do you are likely to experience a good improvement in your grades.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RQHLLSHHDIG8L Allison took the Active Control Test Anxiety CD Training as a high school junior.
Now two years later, she comments on her experience.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as I hoped
This CD is relaxing and might help if used more then 2 or 3 times (as recommended).I was just as anxious as usual on test day and definitely didn't improve my score or reduce my test anxiety after using this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Tool in Conquering Test Anxiety
In high school I had never really done well on tests, but I was never concerned about it because most of my grade was based on homework. When I got to college, things changed.Finals were fifty percent of my grade in many classes and midterms were twenty percent.Although I had always been a good, hard working student my GPA began to plummet. At first I thought buying a CD on how to over come test anxiety was a ridiculous idea, but it was really the only chance I had.So I bought this CD last semester and amazingly my test scores began to go up.I am no longer nervous or anxious during tests and this allows me to concentrate on the material on the test and therefore receive a higher score.I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who make even think that they have test anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars My GPA went up by .5 points!!!!
My sophomore year I was approached to be a participant in researching this program.I could never really remember information I studied the night before on a test because I would freak out and always ended up performing poorly because of my severe anxiety. My GPA prior to the program was around a 3.02 and after my sophomore year during my junior fall semester I recieved a 3.78 for the semester and raised my GPA to a 3.47 (after four more semesters of amazing grades)! The instructions are easy and if you sincerely suffer from anxiety like I did I would highly recommend you get these tapes.I am really quite skeptical of programs of this nature but the breathing is key and the relaxing is essential.... really these tapes improved my grades and my ability to retain information that I worked incredibily hard to learn in the first place. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars exciting behavioral treatment
I used this book to create a hypothetical treatment plan for an anxiety disorder for my developmental behavior class. The book was very thorough and practical.

5-0 out of 5 stars User-Friendly
The manual is very user-friendly. It takes a while to really sift through all the ideas, but the first two parts are designed so that you don't have to re-read the important ideas several times. The main themes are recapitulated in different wordings and contexts to make you understand. The treatment section is extremely clear, with both step-by-step guidance and explanations for the activities. Though the design is quite explicit, the authors urge you to design the treatment specifically for each patient, and even give suggestions of how to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful tool
This is a fantastic tool, giving the therapist useful theory as well as specific outlines for sessions.Great for the beginner ACT therapist. The CD contains lots of useful worksheets for clients, and step-by-step outlines for therapists including lots of wonderful metaphors and stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tremendous Contribution
Having been trained in the 70's as a behavior therapist, I moved away from BT in the 80's as I became disillusioned with the mechanistic quality of the approach. Eifert and Forsyth's book beautifully brings the best of behavior therapy together with a more humanistic and interpersonal focus to provide in ACT a truly new paradigm. The so-called "third wave" of behavior therapy incorporates much of the best of other schools while remaining grounded in solid science.
I have found ACT to be a potent weapon in dealing with the anxiety disorders that our clients bring to us. I highly recommend this book for any practitioner of any orientation to wants to broaden their perspective and become more effective in treating these most debilitating disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANK-YOU TO THE AUTHORS
This book is an important contribution to therapists who want to increase effectiveness in their work with suffering beings while also learning to incorporate Eastern psychological teachings in their practice.I found it easy to read, practical, enjoyable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Sell Network Marketing Without Fear, Anxiety or Losing your Friends
This book is an excellent guide not only for business, but also for your personal life!

This book is about building relationships.

5-0 out of 5 stars Change your words, change your future
This book does for network marketing what the Socratic Method did for philosophy - transformed it, empowered it, and made it accessible to every person using everyday language.

Michael Oliver's book How to Sell Network Marketing Without Fear, Anxiety or Losing Your Friends! (Selling from the Soul. Ancient Wisdoms. Modern Practice) is revolutionary! Michael Oliver shines the light on a new paradigm of direct sales, network marketing, and just everyday conversations. Our words create our world, and Michael Oliver shows us how to use the right words to discover what people want and then show them how they can get it!

Whether you are in network marketing or not, this is a MUST-READ BOOK! Don't just read it, study it. Re-read it. Devour it. You will find everyday conversations turning into incredible, life-changing dialogues. And if you are in network marketing, you will be empowered with the tools to build a much larger, stronger organization because you will have the ability to help your team members discover what they want, why they want it, what they can do to get it, and why they can't afford not to build their business!

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful for all network marketing pros!
Loved this book.Whether you are a a beginner, starting up with a new network marketing business, or somebody who has been at it for a while, you will get a lot out of it.Combined with something like Think and Grow Rich, which will take care of any "mindset" issues you may have, this book will give you everything you need to know to start and maintain a successful network marketing business.

I know a lot of people who have gotten involved with network marketing, thinking it was one thing and then finding out it was another. This book shows it is much more than "get rich fast."This has been very helpful to for me, since I am able to give it to the people under me, to get them on the right track.

If you've had a bad experience in multilevel, or are looking for a better experience, this book will help you to make it happen. It will show you this is more than just about building a downline; it's about building a life.It will change the way you approach everything, both within your business and outside of it.

Be fearless!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time or Money
This book is terrible, filled with a bunch of "New Age" hype which I found highly distracting.I was so disgusted that I could only get through 2 chapters and called it quits.A much better book for the money is "Your First Year in Network Marketing" by Mark Yarnell. This is an excellent book and very helpful for the newbie to network marketing.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...a MUST HAVE Book!
I love "really good" books. As a Financial Advisor and a Business Consultant, I consume a ton of books and do a lot of research and due dilligence for my clients.

Network Marketing - As a Home Biz Coach and a Network Marketing professional (for over 20-years), I have also studied many books, audios, videos, CDs, DVDs on - and taken many courses about - the Network Marketing industry.Despite its critics (and I used to be one) - it's a business model that I greatly respect - and when 'worked correctly' according to the 'right' financial, business, marketing and ethical principles - it has no real comparison on this planet in my opinion.

Major Problem - But because of far too much hype + the very poor (OLD methodology) sales / marketing training provided within this industry - there is a terrible failure rate (90-95%)!Distributors are (still) being taught old sales strategies and techniques that are outdated, stressful, and unprofessional. As a result, distributors become uncomfortable, get frustrated, and struggle to succeed. They have not learned (are not learning) the right "people / communication skills" or "sales skills" - and this is a tragedy.

There IS a better way.

A Revolutionary Book - The Review I'm giving here is about a very important, MUST HAVE book - not just for Home Business entrepreneurs - but for everyone.

Michael Oliver - Although I have not personally 'met' this gentleman - I have chatted with him on one of our DRA (Distributor Rights Association) calls recently, where he was our guest speaker((I'm proud to be serving on the DRA Board Of Directors, as Canada's representative. The DRA is a non-profit, global organization that serves to educate, inform, preserve and protect the 'rights' of Network Marketing distributors everywhere)).

Natural Selling - In my opinion, Michael Oliver is perhaps "the" finest teacher / educator / coach within the Network Marketing // Direct Sales industry. His contribution to this industry is huge. In addition to being a brilliant author,he is in constant demand as a speaker / trainer. His 'Natural Selling' approach to business building is radically different from the methods and techniques that many companies, uplines and other trainers teach to their distributors and associates - and thus, it has met with some controversy.

This book is without a doubt, a MUST HAVE resource - for both new as well as experienced Network Marketers (perhaps even more so for veterans). It should be required reading for every Network Marketer in my opinion. In it, Oliver gives us the option of another way to succeed - a more relaxed, fun, professional way.

Personally, I love the blueprint he lays out - as it challenges the very problem areas that most face. For example...

The 80//20 Rule - Early in this great book, he raises a profound question about the 80//20 Rule (20% of the people end up - doing 80% of the work- achieving 80% of the success).

Well, he puts forth the proposition => what if that 20% "makes up" those Rules (which, in many cases, cannot be duplicated by the other 80%)?Hmmm.And what if even 10% of those other 80% "could" succeed - IF those Rules were to be changed somewhat?Hmmm...

Attraction // Relationship Marketing - Michael Oliver describes business building using the approach of a "consultative dialogue" with people - to create long term and mutually profitable relationships. It avoids all the "manipulative techniques and high-pressure sales tactics" so commonly being used in this industry.Natural Selling instead, focuses on creating "trust" throughrelationship building first - and only introducing the products / services / business opportunity as potential solutions "after" a mutual process of discovery with the prospect (he calls them a 'potential partner') - where there's a good FIT for the other person.

Stress Free Building - This book teaches distributors "how" to both understand rejection and eliminate it - "how" to overcome the fear of objections - "how" to end call reluctance forever - "how" to forget all about any personal agenda, and instead, concentrate totally on the 'potential partners' needs and wishes - "how" to have 'potential partners' being attracted to YOU (-vs- you chasing them).

Communication - When we fail to "communicate" effectively with others, we lose - they lose. Disagreements / arguments / divorces / fights / wars - they can all occur because of a lack of ongoing communication. It's no different in our careers /businesses / professions. It starts with putting the OTHER person's interests first - period. It's about asking good questions - listening sensitively (not only to the 'words' spoken [or not spoken], but to the real 'meaning' behind them) - offering sound solutions to any problems uncovered - but also, being willing to admit it (and actually "walk away" from the situation) should you feel that your solution[s] might NOT be the most appropriate for that person.

It's a mindset thing - it's about changing out thinking.Michael Oliver "challenges" us to do just that in his exceptional book. Thank you, Michael!

I give this 255-page book a "perfect 10" - a full 5-STAR Rating.

Sincerely,

Peter Arnold, CLU, CFC / Founder
