One of the best books I have ever read. I have had major depression for 3 years and the things in the book really work!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Instinct to Heal sent to a friend of mine by Amazon.com where I chose the dealer A1Books. Perfect Brand New Condition.
Excellent book on how to handle stress.Written by a French psychiatrist, I discovered it in France some 5 years ago.Not only the author quotes many examples of stress related discomfort and diseases, but he guides his readers to recovery. He indicates combined medications which can help.He shows diagrams and photos of what stress generates in the brain. Ever since I read that book, I feel better and can face life with self-control.I have sent that book to friends and relatives. They all praised it and thanked me for it. I use Amazon.com and choose there the best dealer. In that case it was A1Books

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book - appropriate for the health care professional or the layman
I've recommended this book to several of my family and friends.I've had personal experience with most of the techniques he describes and have had positive results.

5-0 out of 5 stars My family physician asked me to read this book...
I have been struggling with anxiety for a few years and just recently also started suffering from depression too.My family physician recommended that I read this book.I am always open to any alternatives to medicine, especially when it comes to anxiety.I wouldn't say this book changed my life, but I did walk away with a lot of good information. Some of the things I was already aware of from ready other books like this one, but I like how this author backs it up with scientific research.I thought it was easy to read, yet very informative. You may not agree with all of the methods used in this book, but I bet you will find at least one that will help you deal with depression/anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars The secret of good health
This is an amazing book written by a Professor of Psychiatry and practising psychiatrist who thinks outside the box.Yes, a pill or medical procedure relieves pain but this good doctor wants to understand the source of a patient's pain.In treating emotional disorders he might try acupuncture, EMDR (eye movement therapy), or nutritional supplements and personally if I was out of control I would prefer taking fish oil to having someone tamper with my brain. The author relates many personal experiences and his encounters with patients are always compassionate. Ultimately he tells us that the secret to health is stress management, exercise and improved nutrition.

Product Description
A psychologist challenges the tyranny of optimism by claiming that negative thinking is often a far better way to deal with anxiety than striving to stay positive.

How often are we urged to "look on the bright side"? From Norman Vincent Peale to the ubiquitous smiley face, optimism has become an essential part of American society. In this long-overdue book, psychologist Julie Norem offers convincing evidence that, for many people, positive thinking is an ineffective strategy--and often an obstacle--for successfully coping with the anxieties and pressures of modern life. Drawing on her own research and many vivid case histories, Norem provides evidence of the powerful benefits of "defensive pessimism," which has helped millions to manage anxiety and perform their best work. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Negative thinking
In contrast to the positive thinkers, this book argues that negative thinkers are more intelligent and more effective at work contrary to what many managers think.

5-0 out of 5 stars Defensive Pessimism is Positive
A must read if for no other reason than Julie Norem has brought to light a highly functional problem solving style. It is called defensive pessimism and differs substantially from pessimism which is not effective. The author clearly shows how identifying worst case scenarios and preparing for them as a way of handling anxiety is useful. And she points out how it would be harmful to make a defensive pessimist a strategic optimist.Defensive pessimism is as well a strategy taught by cognitive-behavioral therapists as Julie Norem points out.The author makes defensive pessimism accessible and acceptable. If you're a pessimist you can become a defensive pessimist. You can applaud your coping strategy. While the book is repetitive, the repetitions help to drive the essential points home.Valuable for the clinician as well as the lay person.

5-0 out of 5 stars the positive power of negative thinking
I found it fantastic.I learnt so much about myself and it helped me understand how other relationships were different and why.I didnt even relise so much of what I did.It is a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Typically Female Style
Most Females (or other minority groups) appear to practice the management philosophy of Dr. Norem's positive negativism, perhaps because typically being followers rather than recognized leaders, they've often had to entertain the high probability of failure, due to bias, discrimination or simply histories of it. The idea that optimists occur across the gender gap, the racial gap, or the disability or ethnic minority gap is preposterous. Anyone who struggles with the presumptions of success as heavily concentrated in the domain of the majority is not logical to emotionally invest in that traditional attitude because of the failures they are used to having to absorb. Optimism, itself, is very much rooted in the success history of the past, and to those who are class, gender and identity favored. All of the rest practice to varying degrees the process of positive negativism by conditioning if not by training and experience. Why should it be otherwise?

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic Psychology for Real People
I found that the psychologist who wrote this interesting book provides significant understanding and help for those of us who just are not the naturally upbeat type of "Don't worry, Be happy" optimists. The concept and quiz for the personality style "Defensive Pessimism" support a positive interpretation of individual differences in optimism and pessimism, and emphasize the adaptive value of being a person who thinks through worst-case scenarios and uses anxiety to motivate and carry out effective actions. I like the balanced approach in this book that helps the reader understand both the dangers of unrealistic optimism and the virtues of constructive pessimism. Here one can find realistic psychology for real people that is based on the author's 20 years of original research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read, a bit repetitive.
Wonderful read and reference guide for nutri-ceuticals! Eye opening book based on hard evidence that deficiency in vitamins and supplements can influence mood.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
This is the first book I've read in a long time with advice that's easy to apply to real life. Although people need medication at times, I like his drug free approach to healing mood disorders. His works have helped me live healthier and gain insights for my blog at [...].

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!
This is one of the most informative books regarding food and mood and how they are intertwined. There is also an extensive section on supplements and how some of them can be used to treated illnesses such as depression, anxiety, OCD, etc. I recommend this book to anyone suffering from a mental illness and would like more insight or health professionals out there that would like more information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bibliotherapy
Full disclosure here:I'm a holistic doctor, so I'm biased towards natural interventions for mood disorders, and this is stuff that I talk to patients about on an almost daily basis. But I've seldom seen natural therapies for psychological conditions presented in such a balanced, clear, scientific fashion.

I sometimes blanch at the outlandish claims made by some health books that deal with mental conditions. I think they cruelly mislead patients to believe that there's a vitamin or a supplement for every psychiatric complaint. Reinforcing denial is not good for patients at risk to themselves and others. But Jack Challem is versed in the latest science, and never strays far from the evidence in making his case for natural approaches.

There's clearly a place for drugs in the treatment of mental disorders, but I wish books like this got wider circulation because we could relieve untold suffering with a few basic suggestions herein.Studies have actually shown that good self-help books cure sufferers of mild to moderate depression at a rate comparable to that of Zoloft, Paxil and other commonly used drugs. They've even coined a term for it: "Bibliotherapy"!

So take this book and call your shrink in the morning--it may really not be so far-fetched!I think I'll start stocking it in my dispensary to give to my patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes sense -- and it works!
Jack Challem seems to have written this book just for me. I was so tired of seeing doctors who merely prescribed multi-bad-effects medications and who each told me a different cause of my problems. I had to became very proactive to save my own health.

I was always exhausted, in body and spirit. I felt like I was in a constant brain fog, getting early Alzheimer's! I awakened more tired than when I went to bed, longing to take naps, no needing them. I have had fibromyalgia for 15 years and am taking medications for this, taking two medications which help tremendously but cause side effects. I have hypertension, am an adult with ADD.Like most people I am stressed, anxious, impatient, lack focus, taking care of an elderly parent......sound familiar? But I am an early retired teacher who loved her job and should be more relaxed and healthy. I want and need my active life-style back. I'm not "that old"!!

Well, I was literally sick from taking meds, so I picked up Mr. Challem's book just by chance and found I COULD help myself, was doing so many wrong nutritional things, made some of his easy, suggested changes and, to my disbelief, found great relief within two weeks! I have always taken supplements and watched my health - so I thought - but still felt bad most of the time. And only the suggestions made in this book have helped me feel so much better. This author makes sense.

In the easiest reading and well organized presentation, Mr. Challem specifically presents HOW food affects mood and four steps to change. He discusses real, every day problems: how to realistically reduce our levels of stress and anxiety, how to handle our irritability, how to have more energy. And his suggestions, fully explained so even I would understand them, worked!

He goes on to take us step by step through a "recovery" process in which we can "fix" ourselves - armed with nutritional understanding and easy to do changes in our diet and life style. And best of all Mr. Challem clearly points out the specific connections between foods and moods and gives the reader things to DO and things to avoid....along with some of the best recipes I have ever tried.

While all his information is data based, I could easily understand the author and put his connections and suggestions to use immediately. And they have made a wonderfully positive change in my health, my entire life.
And he sells no supplements!

This book is a perfect gift for any friend or family member (underlining and notes will have you hold on to your own copy!) who has hypertension, fibromyalgia, ADD, exhaustion, depression, who is overweight or those irritating characteristics of impatience, irritsbility, stress, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, forgetfulness ---- characteristics we certainly notice in THEM but seldom admit about ourselves!

Buy this book for your own health and sanity --- and some to give as gifts to those you care about. These ideas make sense and work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 174 Reviews Were For 1st Edition of DPPU, Not This 2nd Edition.
This is the New & Improved Second Edition of "Diagonally-Parked in a Parallel Universe: Working Through Social Anxiety" (published 2010 - 1st. Ed. was published in 2000 with a different cover). I'm writing to let potential buyers of this the 2nd Ed. know that the 174 Reviews which are listed here are from the 1st Ed. of the book. New reviews would have a 2010 starting date on them.

The reason I mention this is that the rewriting for the 2nd Ed. has taken any criticism of the 1st. Ed. to heart and revised the book to be very readible, user-friendly, and on-point. There are many more targeted exercises, assignments, important information, and tips. Anything that might not have been on-target-helpful to the reader's understanding or their following the step-by-step approach to social anxiety recovery has been removed. Up-to-the-minute, relevant information has been added with respect to medications, therapy, resources, and life strategies.

This book has been reviewed and acclaimed by clinical researchers in the field of social anxiety/social phobia. I feel confident you will find it even more helpful than the 1st Ed. If you would like to comment to me personally on the 2nd Ed.'s usefulness to you, I would welcome hearing from you. Much success on your being "parallel parked in a parallel universe" soon!

PLEASE NOTE: The "Change" example used by Nick in his August 29, 2009, review of the 1st Ed. of the book may appear to represent what was actually written in the book. It does not. No Mayans, symbols on bamboo, or a synopsis of the 14 challenging theories etc.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Frustrating Read: Very Tangential
I am almost half-way through this book, and so far whatever help it offers is either never going to reveal itself, or I've lost my patience to discover it, because the author's writing style is amazingly tangential. This is more of a psych. textbook than a self-help book.He has managed to summarize every theory of social psychology and define every word he has typed thus far, but I still don't know how to be less socially anxious.

Imagine every sentence you read went something like this:

To change, we need to challenge our irrational beliefs.

Change

There are various theories on how one changes.Miller and Prochastka cite 4 critical stages of change:

1. Precontemplation
2. Contemplation
3. Action
4. Maintanence

Need

When we need something, it is more than just wanting something to happen. The ancient Mayas expressed needs by carving symbols of their needs into bamboo. Many people believe a bamboo is a plant, but is actually a type of grass. Bernstein & Miller polled 7,000 college students between the ages of 18-21 and asked them if bamboo is a plant or a grass and only 37% answered correctly.

Challenge

There are 14 leading theories on how we challenge something. Here is a quick synopsis of all 14:

This is an exaggeration obviously, but I swear, this is how the book reads, and it's maddening. He never gets to the point. It's just explanations of explanations.Plus, there are glaring spelling errors and other typos.Chapter 14 is titled, "Overcoming Sweating, Blushing and BB" and then on every page in that chapter, the title header mispells 'blushing' as 'blusing.' 'Blusing' wouldn't even make it through a spell-check, but somehow it made it to be printed on the header of every page of the chapter?

Any helpful info. one could distill from this bear of a book is lost by its expansiveness. After 137 difficult pages, I am overwhelmed with the 'why' and 'how' of my condition (and a lot of other useless information) but am so drained, if there is a 'so then...' I've lost the patience to read further to find it, AND I'm convinced that the 'so then' will be so wordy and convoluted, I won't know how to do it anyway.

Plus this beast was expensive!I want my money back.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware...Another book with fake 5-star reviews
Yes, this book is very well reviwed...But take a closer look at those reviews.
The 5 star reviews are mostly by people who strangely only reviewed this book.

Others authors have used the same technique to trick people like us (Breaking the chain of low self esteem; Discipline...)

Don't be fooled.

3-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating to Read, but Informative
DIAGONALLY-PARKED IN A PARALLEL UNIVERSE... by Signe A. Dayhoff is an informative book that explains social anxiety/social phobia (SA/SP) rather well. However, the haphazard way the book was put together keeps it from being any better than 3-stars.

First, the Bad--

***Continuous errors such as missing words, misspellings etc. which happen every two/three pages and you start to wonder about the author's credibility. Didn't this book have a proof-reader?

***The structure is questionable. The first half of the book is devoted to explaining SA/SP, relaxation techniques, cognitive behavior techniques and medication. Suddenly, the book shifts to dating, finding a job, marketing yourself and networking, which is fine. But then it goes on into chapters dealing with the physical symptoms of SA/SP, finding a doctor and what to expect when getting help. Again, these chapters are fine but when you're reading along and go from medication to dating, it's confusing. I was left thinking-shouldn't I at least have this problem under control before I start dating and networking?

The following are also problems with the bookin my opinion:

***Image--there's a segment on physical appearance and the author states that people with SA/SP should keep their image up by not wearing "flamboyant clothes, have piercings, or oddly colored hair because this detracts from our positive image..." Excuse me, but positive image according to who? Society? The author's? Shouldn't we be more accepting of ourselves, whatever that may be, rather than trying to conform to some subjective idea of "normal?"

***Anger Management--BIG FAUX PAS--in this section the author suggests that when you get angry "you should take a time out and cool down" and one of the ways to calm down is driving somewhere. WRONG! Even the DMV handbook says you should not drive a car when you are upset or angry. It's even on the DMV test.

***Reward and Punishment--the author suggests to make lists and goals like reading this book in 2 weeks. Sounds reasonable, but in the previous chapter she writes that people with SA/SP have all or nothing thinking, which means that if you don't finish the book in 2 weeks you'll just abandon it altogether. But you make these lists, and if you complete the task you get a reward. If you don't, you have to punish yourself in some way. Dayhoff didn't go into what constitutes punishment, but I think people with this disorder have been punishing themselves long enough.

Now the Good---

***Good Descriptions--Plenty of examples and descriptions of what SA/SP is and uses stories from different people who suffer from it to illustrate the many forms the disorder can take.

***Terms for Negative Self-talk--provides terms and definitions of maladaptive thought patterns like "mental filter" that help you understand what is going on as soon as the thought pops into your head.

***Fear Assessment Exercise--this helps challenge irrational thoughts by questioning them on paper.

***Relaxation Techniques--Dayhoff gives different relaxation techniques for dealing with physical stress brought on by anxiety.

***Drug Info--Provides descriptions of the various drugs used to treat SA/SP, the side effects, and how they're supposed to help.

***Resource Guide--since this book was published in 2000, I'm not sure if most of the websites listed in the resource guide are still active but it's good that the author included them.

Anyway, the book is informative...but a chore to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of "Indigo Dreams" CD created bylori@stressfreekids.com
"Indigo Dreams" by lori@stressfreekids.com, is a special CD for children 4-9.It is beautifully done, with a direct approach to the child. So many materials in this area become sweet, almost sickly sweet, but Indigo Dreams is warm, charming, and really loving, while presenting the techniques in an intriguing and creative way. There are four selections on this CD, in addition to the complete sound track. The first is also called "Indigo Dreams" and is a series of affirmations, accompanied by gentle music. It is especially appropriate for younger children."Boy and a Bear" deals with easy breathing, "Boy and a Turtle" uses colors, and "The Goodnight Caterpillar" considers Stress and Release, and Progressive Relaxation. Here, the child is used as a teacher, which can be a very positive experience for some children. This CD gets my highest recommendation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Indigo Dreams
I bought this CD in hopes to help my 8 year old daughter fall asleep easier.
She has trouble letting her mind relax; also to help drown out the other noises that she hears that keep her awake(normal house creaking). I have to say that the first 4 tracks are narrated (kinda creepy). My daughter did not like that. I thought when I bought it that it was all relaxing music. Luckily track 5 is 28 minutes of relaxing un-narrated music. She listens to it all night, with #5 on repeat. This CD did not solve our issues, but it does help.

I highly recommend this cd to all parents. My 11 y/o daughter has been listening to this cd, as well as Garden of Wellness and Ocean Dreams. After a busy day, she really needs a cd that is calming and relaxing. This is perfect for that. She will also tell you, that she really enjoys the cds.If I do not have her "cd" ready at bedtime, she will make sure to ask! 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid information
I have taught adults with math anxiety for many years and use many of the techniques described in this book. They work! The book seems well written, and should be helpful for the math-anxious. The author has a great deal of experience working with math-anxious students at a community college. The intended audience is definitely college students, which makes some parts of the book less useful for the adults that I work with. The section on "Effective Math Study Skills" might be overwhelming to many; following all the prescriptions sounds like a full-time job.

To Ms. Arem's recommendations, I would add that one should do aerobic exercise regularly to reduce stress. I also recommend Brain Gym exercises, which one can find out about online.

4-0 out of 5 stars It works, even if it's a little cheesy
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has any type of academic anxiety, not just math. It's a little cheesy at times, but if you follow what it says, you will change your attitude about math.I just got a 100 on a math test for the first time since grade school (I'm a college student). At any rate, with the low price, it's a definite yes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conquering Math Anxiety
I found this to be an exceptional book.It provides excellent practical strategies to be successful in math.It covers everything from psychological/personal blocks that may hinder students from learning math to practical success strategies that students can apply immediately.I especially enjoyed the discussion on learning styles and the accomodations that can be used for better understanding of coursework.I found the chapters on positive self-talk, conquering test anxiety and study skills very helpful as well.Every math teacher should have this book on their shelf! ... Product Description
Research conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health has shown that anxiety disorders are the number one mental health problem among American women and are second only to alcohol and drug abuse among men. Approximately 15 percent of the population of the United States, or nearly 40 million people, have suffered from panic attacks, phobias, or other anxiety disorders in the past year. Nearly a quarter of the adult population will suffer from an anxiety disorder at some time during their life. Yet only a small proportion of these people receive treatment..... It is quite possible to overcome your problem with panic, phobias, or anxiety on your own through the use of the strategies and exercises presented in this workbook. Yet it is equally valuable and appropriate, if you feel so inclined, to use this book as an adjunct to working with a therapist or group treatment program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a God send.
I found this book to be a God send. It's a very helpful, useful, insightful, book. It's helpful personally and in my practice as a school nurse. A book you read and then lend to others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good beginners book
This is a wonderful basic book on Anxiety disorders. It goes into depth discussing the different disorders and their symptoms, and is a very solution oriented book, giving exercises to do and ideas of some of the medications used to treat anxiety disorders. It also talks about cognitive behavioral therapy, and gives such exercises. This sets this book out from many of the others, as this approach to dealing with anxiety disorders and depression is becoming more popular.
If you have already read some of the basic books on Anxiety I would recommend a wonderful book that has been more than a tremendous help to me, although the title doesn't sound like a book for anxiety, it is for both anxiety and depression, and uses only cognitive behavioral therapy. It is called "Ten days to self esteem" by David Burns, I would also recommend any books by David Burns that would help with anxiety and depression.

2-0 out of 5 stars Anxiety or not?
I do not recommend this book..Other than the part where you learn to peel the onion of your problems..which you will read in any other Anxiety book..I do not recommended this book at all!
Terrible..the breathing exercises to stop anxiety does not work!! Its so silly, waste of money!! I give it a D- Seriously..of course this is my opinion, but i have anxiety,so i would like to help other ppl save their money and time on another book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grateful to find this book!
I am totally grateful to find this book and to have read it.I find myself constantly thinking about and applying what it taught me about dealing with anxiety in everyday situations and it really does help!

I have read so much about anxiety that it really seems that there was no more left to learn, but this book taught me more, most importantly methods I could use to handle my anxiety without having to rely on medication.

If you are interested in medication, this book also covers those aspects as well as herbal medicine, notedly Kava and St. Johns Wort.

I was really at a loss when it came to dealing with anxiety and reading this book produced a feeling of well being. The coping techniques should be invaluable to anyone in need of help dealing with their anxiety.

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium relieved my anxiety, please read this review
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good primer for learning more about anxiety and panic attacks, etc.

My 88 year old mother started having panic attacks a few months ago. This book was excellent in helping me to develop a basic understanding of what the heck is happening to her.
Easier to understand than others I've looked at. Just a good reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Look No Further! Author/Therapist Reneau Z. Peurifoy is the Doctor House of Psychologists
I met Author/Therapist Reneau Z. Peurifoy in Sacramento, California almost 20 years ago. I used his book faithfully and met with Mr. Peurifoy for therapy sessions once a week over a two year period. I was insured through Kaiser Permanente and diagnosed with Depression and Panic Anxiety Disorder. I was an absolute basket case at the time and continued to get worse while be treated by a Kaiser psychiatrist. Unexpectedly, a Kaiser employee, seeing that I was abnormally distressed, approached me and said that I would never recover if I continued getting treatment at Kaiser. I was then referred to someone out of their network: Mr. Reneau Z. Peurifoy who was one of the few therapists back then that really knew anything about Panic Anxiety Disorder. I didn't have medical insurance that would allow me to see Reneau Peurifoy and had to pay out of pocket. He let me pay what I could afford and continued to help me. I think the most I paid him was $20 a session which was cheap even in the late 80's. Needless to say, this man saved my life.
He saved my marriage and kept my family together. He was always there for me and I am forever thankful. Every now and then I think about how he helped that younger version of me who was an absolute lunatic. He gave me the courage to move forward and made me see that the world wasn't as scary as I thought it was. Buy his book as it is well worth the investment. However, you must do the exercises as he suggests and endure the discomfort that he will challenge you to overcome. He speaks the truth and really has a deep understanding of human behavior. He really is the Dr. House of
psychologists and I thought that I would pay him this compliment because I accidentally came across his book while browsing through Amazon's Listmania.

Product Description
A psychologist and leadership expert explains how to harness the right level of anxiety

Most of us see anxiety as a bad thing, so at the first sign of it we try to fight back or run away. But according to Robert Rosen, this outdated view ignores one of the most powerful forces in business: Anxiety helps us concentrate, learn, relate to people, think more creatively, and deliver better results.

Of course, too much anxiety causes fear, chaos, and loss of morale. But too little leads to stagnation and a false sense of security. It’s like a rubber band: If you pull it too hard, it breaks. If you don’t pull it hard enough, you fail to maximize its potential. Finding the happy medium between panic and passivity is the secret to success.

Drawing on twenty years of research with CEOs, Rosen explains how great leaders succeed by living and leading with just enough anxiety. He shows how the ability to manage anxiety brings out their own best performance, enables them to build great teams, and inspires and challenges their organizations.

Only when we allow ourselves to feel our insecurity, discomfort, confusion, and pain can we reach our potential, both as individuals and teams. Just Enough Anxiety offers practical guidance to all kinds of organizations, blending cutting-edge psychology with real-world stories of success. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Repetitive
This book had a good idea/concept but I gave up reading in the middle of it since the style was very repetitive, the idea never got developed beyond what is in the introduction, and a lot of the examples used were not on point.

5-0 out of 5 stars NEW CONCEPT ON OLD THOUGHT
I think Bob Rosen's book JUST ENOUGH ANXIETY is important enough for
Executives and those on the to way to that goal to read, and understand it will help you run your business and focus properly and successfully in your company.

I wish I had had the luxury, during the years I ran a business, of reading this guide to identify the problems and motivating employees on a consistent basis.Learning to understand the differences in anxiety and learning to focus with more controlled anxiety would have helped me grow the company in more progressive manner.
.
I feel the book has enough skills to help non-executives, seniors, and retirees. Everyone has ideas from past experiences, most think we understand the present, and many have no concept how to embrace and focus on the significant changes the future will bring. If we choose the idea that anxiety, {JEA} will help us on this journey, the future will help us be more effective citizens.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Worth Reading
In Just Enough Anxiety, Dr. Robert Rosen gave just enough information to shift my perspective on anxiety. There are a glut of books on the market advising readers how to relieve their anxiety, or rid their lives of it. This book stands out because it acknowledges that, in today's world, anxiety is a constant and inescapable companion for all of us. The news isn't as bad as it sounds. Dr. Rosen outlines how each of us can monitor, control and harness the energy of anxiety to become more productive in our own lives and on the job. The book is filled with compelling examples of some of the most successful business leaders who have done this. The good news is that the principles in the book apply to anyone---those at the top of the career ladder or those on their the way up. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
Indigo Ocean Dreams is a 60 minute audio/CD designed to entertain your child in an ocean setting while introducing them to four research-based, stress management techniques. Each story integrates either progressive muscular relaxation, visualizations, breathing, and affirmations (positive statements). Children follow their sea friends along as they use progressive muscular relaxation and breathing to release and manage anger with Angry Octopus. Children build self-esteem with positive believe in yourself statements with Affirmation Weaver. Diaphragmatic breathing is fun with sea otters in Sea Otter Cove. Children enjoy a bubble ride through the ocean as they visualize colors with Bubble Riding. This CD offers longer stories than the first in this series, Indigo Dreams. Ideal for older children ages 6-12, or as step two for those already familiar with Indigo Dreams. Engaging characters present these adult level techniques in an easy to follow format that makes it fun for any child to learn. The male narration is accompanied by calming sounds of dolphins, sea otters, and gentle waves. An additional music sound track is included to further enhance your child's relaxation experience. These proven techniques encourage wellness and provide tools for children who suffer from anxiety, stress, trauma, hyperactivity, anger, pain, sleep issues, and lack of confidence. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sleep Tight!

"Indigo Dreams", created by Lori Lite of Stress Free Kids, is a special CD for children 4-9.It is beautifully done, with a direct approach to the child who is having trouble unwinding at night. So many materials in this area become sweet, almost sickly sweet, but "Indigo Dreams" is warm, charming, and really loving, while presenting the techniques in an intriguing and creative way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids bedtime story
My daughter who is practising yoga came to me in the morning after falling asleep to track 5 (ocean and dolphin sounds) and said that she had such a nice experience before bedtime.
Good value even for non-english speaking countries. I have taken over the idea for my children yoga classes. Colours and animals work great for visualisation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous clinical tool and mom's tool too
This is a fabulous tool for any clinician or mom.I bought it for work as a child trauma therapist, the kids love it.It has helped them get to sleep and decreased night terrors, and we can begin to work following one story. So as a mom...I began using it at home with my 11 year old son who has test anxiety. We listen before bed and the morning of the big tests and he is off to school with confidence in a relaxed state.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product!
I love the Indigo Ocean Dreams CD and the books that correlate to it.I am a Behavioral Resource Teacher and work with students with emotional and behavioral disabilities.I have used the stories during social skills lessons as well as in independent listening centers. All of my students (in grades Kdg. through 6th) have enjoyed the stories. My students have learned valuable strategies for decreasing stress, dealing with feelings of anger, and believing in themselves.I would recommend this product to any classroom teacher.

2-0 out of 5 stars good concept, poor execution
I do not recommend this CD.I wish I could have listened to a sample of the CD before I purchased it.It was a waste of money. The electronic "music" or noise on this CD is annoying.I like the concept of teaching relaxation techniques to children. But my grandchildren did not like the narrator's voice or the music and asked that it be turned off.I was looking for something to help them fall asleep when they come to visit. This was not the right CD.A better choice for young children (infant to six) is Rainforest by Fisher Price. The music is soothing and can be played at very low volumn.Another favorite is the Garden of Serenity by David and Steve Gordon. While I think this CD is intended for adults, it is appropriate for any age.The grandchildren love the chime and water sounds. With either of these CD's they fall asleep within minutes. ... SAY NO TO FEAR AND ANXIETY

So many things to worry about and so little time to worry! Christians obviously are not immune to the troubles of life, and when troubles do come we're urged to rise above them and experience "peace that passes understanding." But how, in day-to-day life, does that really happen? While numerous books have been written on overcoming anxiety, Anxiety Attacked goes beyond pop psychology's temporary cures by returning us to our only true source of comfort and victory—Scripture. John MacArthur compassionately demonstrates from such passages as Matthew 6:25-34, Philippians 4:6-9, and 1 Peter 5:5-7 God's concern about our anxious situations, and helps us appropriate His resources for dealing with them calmly, yet effectively.

So when anxiety attacks, attack anxiety!

Dr. John MacArthur, Jr. is Pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, and President of The Master's College and Seminary. Known for his dynamic expository preaching, John is heard daily on the "Grace to You" syndicated radio broadcast and has a cassette ministry that has distributed more than eight million tapes. His many books include The MacArthur New Testament Commentary series, The Gospel According to Jesus, Our Sufficiency in Christ, How to Meet the Enemy, Saved Without a Doubt, and God: Coming Face to Face with His Majesty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!!
I had debilitating anxiety and fear. I bought this book hoping something would help me. I am almost finished with it and I can say it has helped me greatly. If you suffer from anxiety, fear or worry, get this book. Using the Bible, he deals with the topics in a very clear way. One suggestion though. Don't just sit down and read it in one night. Read a few pages, think about them, pray, jot down pertinent verses and post them where you can see them easily, and do the study in the back. I took several months to go through this book. Some passages I re-read because I really wanted it to sink in. I don't think it would have helped as much if I just read it through quickly and put it back on the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Scriptural Answer To Your Worries!!
This book is Macarthur at his best!A clearly written Biblical response to the anxieties and cares of everyday life.If you want to learn how to win the battle against worry and anxiety, this book will give you a strong scriptural base to get you started on the right path and a wealth of practical advice to help you along the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Pass This One By!
I bought this book for a friend dealing with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) literally because the author quoted so much scripture in it. After all, where else but in God's word would you find the arsenal necessary to combat the demons of anxiety?

While waiting to give it to the intended I ended up reading it myself. I was so glad I did! This is much more than a therapeutic book for people dealing with anxiety or other compulsion! Like a spiritual physician John Macarthur Jr. adeptly applies the salve of scripture to the many "cares of the soul".I think everyone worries at one time or another and this book is definitely one to keep on the shelf for just such times! Anxiety Attacked is a very real and viable lifetime reference tool.

The "Psalms for the anxious" and personal and group study guides that Mr. Macarthur included at the end make it an outstanding choice for pastors and church administrators looking to provide assistance for the struggling anxious in their congregation. Whether or not you think you have a problem with anxiety you can't help but come away from this book better equipped to deal with life's many curve balls. Onward Christian soldiers!! ... Read more

Good book if you've never seen or read a self help book on the subject.Good coverage of drug choices to use when consulting doctors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from a "Bipole"
This is a fabulous resource. I've had depression, mania and anxiety (as well as panic attacks) for the past at least four years, and I've read A LOT of books that aim to help you understand your diagnosis, symptoms, and struggles, and many have been very helpful. This one takes the cake. While not all of the information was new to me, a lot of it was, and the format was perfect for truly helping me understand. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is because I wish there were a newer edition that could update some of the information on medications.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic
I was disappointed with this one.Everyone else liked it.I just thought it was very plain, and became bored with it quickly. If you suffer from anxiety check out "Embracing the Fear"...
