This volume marks the 100th anniversary of the first systematic monograph on polyglot aphasia (Pitres, 1895). Its purpose is to focus the attention of language pathologists around the world, and most particularly in areas traditionally assumed to be unilingual, on the pervasiveness of bilingualism in their communities. The chapters in this book illustrate why it is not sufficient to assess patients in only one of their languages, regardless of its premorbid relative degree of fluency. Members of the IALP Aphasia Committee and their collaborators describe new cases of bilingual aphasia, including acquired childhood aphasia, subcortical aphasia and various types of dissociations and shifts of dominance, whose characteristics could not be predicted on the basis of age or manner of second language acquisition, context of use or degree of mastery. Bilingual patients reported here speak a variety of languages ranging from structurally very similar (Catalan-Spanish, Friulian-Italian, Japanese-Korean) to structurally quite distant (English-Farsi, English-Japanese). Practical issues related to diagnosis, prognosis and therapy, as well as more theoretical issues of the organization of two or more languages in one brain, supported by a PET study, are also explored.

I cannot praise this book enough.The author explains what to expect, at every point of disability and recovery, for both patient and caregiver.Using non-technical language, he explains the causes of aphasia and the several manifestations of the disorder.He provides many strategies for helping the aphasic function as fully as possible, and he reassures the reader that aphasics have not lost their basic intelligence--only the ability to communicate effectively. Theory and research in aphasiology have typically concentrated on a limited population--right-handed adult monolinguals whose language uses an alphabetic code. Bilingual individuals, ideographical code users, and children (among others) have been separated out. This book examines the available data from these "atypical" aphasics, asking whether what makes them different has a significant effect on language representation and processing in the brain. Each chapter reviews literature pertinent to a given population and explores whether (and potentially how) these populations differ from the "typical" aphasic population. The ultimate goal is to better understand whether the model of language used in aphasiology can be extended to these "atypical" populations, or conversely, whether significant differences merit the development of a new model.
