5-0 out of 5 stars 40 years of daily mugraines Cured....Miracle?
In Dec. '97 and Jan. '98 My wife (native Costa Rican, Now US citizen) and I spent the holidays in Costa Rica. I had already read "Folk Medicine" by D.C. Jarvis and while we were visiting one of my wife's friends I noticed our hostess (the wife) seemed in pain. Upon querying her she said she only had one of her daily migraines which she has suffered most of her life. The migraines began when she was around 12 years and she rarely went even one day since without them. No doctors had done anything for her. She "lived" on Ibuprofen, 1000mgs 2/3 times a day. She was 52 Y.O. I mentioned the Folk Medicine book and 2 tsp vinegar with 2 tsp honey in a full glass of water. I told her it was worth a try, but (fearing it may take a while to take effect) I told her to try it faithfully for at least a week before abandoning it. I returned next day (1/2 block away) to find her bright and smiling giving me a big hug! NO MIGRAINE!! This was surprising enough, but I was skeptical...placebo?....To be brief, she ran out of vinegar at 25 days, and thought she was cured...no mugraines, no pain killers. After 4 days with no mixture she had her first migraine again, and we quickly got her some more vinegar. Immediately, on re-starting the vinegar/honey drink, no migraines. When we left to return to USA she was on her 45th day without migraines except for the day mentioned. She now drinks 2 glasses a day and so far, NO MIGRAINES!! I of course felt delighted to have been able to help her this way. She had the real thing with flashing lights, sounds, grinding pain. She really looks like a different, bright, person. Any one wishing to verify this I can give her name and address in C.R.Her daughter is married and lives here in the USA near us.Dan Manning

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading from pre-school to med-school!
All that Dr. Jarvis wrote as to what the outcome would be if an individual would follow the stated regime of vinegar, honey, and kelp I can personally attest to. The excruciating joint and muscle pain, the fatigue and chronic upper respiratory infections that were described where written as if he knew me as a patient. Having suffered the paralysis that he described on page 29 in the soft covered edition I knew that he knew and understood in detail exactly what he was writing about. This is a 'must read' for everyone who wants to get well and stay well. For those who exercise and eat right and are well this book should be read for further understanding as to how the body is manufacturing acids, utilizing acids and eliminating acids to keep them that way. This book should be brought to the forefront and promoted as a 'must have' book for every household. ... Read more

Product Description
As a biologist with over thirty years of experience teaching a wide range of complex biomedical subjects and a person who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) himself, Dr Thomas F Lee is ideally suited to write a book that addresses the vital questions about the nature of the disease and the rationale behind its treatment. This is the only book that explains in layperson's terms the newest available therapies and the latest advances in our understanding of this often debilitating disease. These new insights have led to many molecular-based approaches already in clinical trial, and many more are waiting in the wings. All of these exciting developments are the result of the ongoing biotechnological revolution and a new understanding of the immune system aided by genetic research. Millions of people suffer from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a debilitating auto-immune disease that ravages the delicate lining of the joints. As in other auto-immune diseases, instead of defending against foreign invaders, the immune system inexplicably attacks healthy tissue.RA causes systemic effects as well; not only are joints painful, through the destruction of bone and cartilage, but there is often accompanying fatigue, decreased appetite, depression, and muscle pain. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read
Great book for someone newly diagnosed with RA. Especially for someone who likes, "how stuff works". Offers an extensive list of websites in the back for further fact gathering and keeping up to date. Also a good resource for navigating and understanding the disease process and progression & the medicines available. I wish there had been a nod to, Dr. John E Sarno's (professor, Rehabilitation Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine) work and experience with treating RA and other mindbody disorders. If you are reading this review and have an interest his most recent book (2007) "The Divided Mind" is well worth taking a look at. I think it is important to keep an open mind, keep digging and find what works for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a comprehensive discussion of RA we can understand.
This discussion on RA is the most comprehensive available in layman's terms.This disease process is so complicated and the research on treatment so varied, trying to keep up on journal articles or short publications is almost impossible. This book puts more useable information between the two covers than you will find anywhere. Unlike medical journals, the disease process explanations are concise and understandable.Although the explanations are detailed and scientific and may take more than one reading to get your brain around the complex concepts, it nicely falls somewhere in between the very oversimplified information found in "arthritis" books available at bookstores and over-complicated and hard-to-read medical book information. Truly helpful is the detail about how clinical trials are conducted and the complicated sequence of events that occur in treatment research. It makes the waiting for decades for new treatments a little easier to understand. Also helpful are the briefs on current research (now a bit out of date-some of the "in trials" treatments in the book have been approved and are available) that is ongoing along with web sites so individuals can follow trials, results, research progress, etc. and even contains information on joining in some of the clinical trials. The description of the immune processes is very helpful. Not only does it help the reader understand the immune system as a whole, and the effect of this disease on the immune system, it also gives a good picture of how HIV and AIDS compares on the opposite end of the immunity spectrum (overactive vs. underactive immune system). Best of all, this book arms RA sufferers with good information to be able to take a more active role in their own treatment. Buy it for a friend who has RA or buy it for yourself. You will want to reread it several times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Gift for someone with rheumatoid arthritis!
If you have rheumatoid arthritis, or if a friend or loved one has been diagnosed with this disease I highly recommend this book as an invaluable source of information.Not only is it packed with facts on rheumatoid arthritis ranging from details of exactly what is happening in the joints and the immune system to useful Web sites to keep up on the latest details on new medications and treatment approaches, it is also clearly and beautifully written.It really is a handbook to help readers make informed decisions with their physcians.Included as well are fascinating insights into possible future treatments now in the research stage - from the use of stem cells to gene therapy.
This is the best gift you can give a friend who suffers from RA. ... Read more

Product Description
Nearly 3 million Americans suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, a painful, incurable connective-tissue disease that attacks the hands and feet as well as the joints and may lead to deformities and permanent disabilities. Rheumatoid Arthritis: Plan to Win offers an inspiring, scientifically based game plan for minimizing the effects of this chronic illness, and ultimately, achieving optimal health. Here is the definitive resource for practical strategies and emotional support, whether you need help controlling pain, are concerned about medication side-effects, or want to locate a reliable RA news source or support group on the Internet. Helpful chapters detail the latest therapies, special dietary and exercise needs of people with RA, how to deal with arthritis at home and in the workplace, prepare for surgery, pregnancy and childbirth, enjoy healthy sexuality, use the mind-body connection to control symptoms, make informed decisions about alternative medicine, and perhaps most important, how to build a healthcare team and maintain excellent communication and working relationships with that team. By using this book as a starting point and a 24/7 reference guide, people with RA will be better equipped to form an effective plan of action, making well-informed decisions about their health along the way, and greatly enhancing their ability to live happy, productive lives. Cheryl Koehn, who was an Olympic-caliber athlete when she developed RA, is a leading advocate and spokesperson for people with arthritis. Together with her co-authors, John Esdaile, MD, and science writer Taysha Palmer, Koehn provides a wealth of information and practical advice, assembled from thousands of research papers as well as from her personal experiences with this debilitating disease.Amazon.com Review
Cheryl Koehn used to soak her feet in ice water each morning to relieve the pain and swelling enough to walk. Now she runs a consulting business, skates, and skis. In Rheumatoid Arthritis: Plan to Win, she offers medical, complementary, and self-help strategies to manage the disease and minimize its effects.

Koehn and coauthors John Esdaile, M.D., head of the Division of Rheumatology at University of British Columbia and Scientific Director of the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada, and health/science writer Taysha Palmer, take you step-by-step through understanding and managing RA. You learn how to choose a healthcare team, understand prescription medications, and use an array of complementary therapies. You learn exercises that relieve pain and stiffness and dietary recommendations, including herbs.

Living with RA involves emotional upheaval, and the authors offer coping strategies for expressing emotions, keeping a positive attitude, and maintaining a sense of control. A chapter on relationships and sexuality will help you relate to loved ones and includes graphic illustrations of sexual positions that minimize strain on hips, knees, and spine. Another chapter presents tips for making the home and workplace more RA friendly. Recommended for people with RA who want to live their lives fully. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for people with rheumatoid arthritis
I am a rheumatologist in private practice.I see many patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
I read Ms. Koehn's book and have recommended it to my patients.In fact, I took the dust cover off and posted it on my waiting room bulletin board with my recommendation to 'buy this book!' It is easy to read but with sufficient detail for the more sophisticated health consumer. It is a great reference source for patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and for family members and care-givers of those with RA.The chapters on medications are particularly useful and well-organized.I like her general advice which is important to all people with chronic diseases, not only RA. Ms. Koehn tells us to be informed and to take charge of our ownhealth care...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide!
I found the read to be very interesting and informative. It's the first book that I've read which describes RA from such a personal and eloquent view. It is filled with vital information and facts. It doesn't concentrate on a medical treatment only - it takes exercise, attitude, and emotional wellness into account.

It's an excellent read and I would recommend it to anyone with RA. ... Read more

Product Description

Great food for inflammation sufferers.

Cut your finger accidentally and the area will swell, redden, and heat up. This type of acute inflammatory response is the body's reaction to trauma, and it's an essential part of the healing process. But inflammation can be harmful when it hangs around too long and refuses to leave. When the inflammation switch refuses to turn off, the body operates as if it is always under attack (the older we get, the more likely this is to happen). White blood cells flood the system for weeks, months, and even years.

Researchers are now linking low-grade, persistent inflammation to premature aging, heart disease, M.S., diabetes, Alzheimer's, psoriasis, arthritis, and cancer.
While anti-inflammatory drugs do exist, they can injure the stomach or suppress the immune system. Fortunately, the situation can be remedied by a change in diet, specifically by altering the kinds of fats you eat. Omega-3 fatty acids tend to decrease inflammation while omega-6 fats and trans-fats increase inflammation. While many foods in the standard American diet (unrefined white flour, sugar, red meat, diary, fast food, and food additives) exacerbate inflammation, a healthy diet made up of fish, nuts, seeds, oils, lean grass-fed meats, and fruits and vegetables can help lessen or prevent inflammation.Likewise, certain spices such as turmeric, cloves, and ginger have proven anti-inflammatory activity.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods for Health will help those with inflammation incorporate anti-inflammatory foods into their everyday diet.Sample recipes may include French-Canadian Pea Soup, Sumac Salmon, Maple-Ginger Butternut Squash, Lime-Ginger Glazed Chicken with Fennel Relish, Green Salad with Grapes and Sunflower Seeds, Cod with Saffron Sauce, and more.

///////////////////////////////////////////////
A. Introduction

Although I do enjoy great food prepared by others much more talented and patient than I am, this reviewer never developed a sense for consistently caring for, and preparing,his own healthy food. But this book changed all that, in a practical and eye-catching way.

B. What I like about this book

In terms of format (presentation and appearance), the front page says it all: a) a 23-word title, b) three color-pictures with relevant food groups (walnuts, spinach, and smoked salmon), and c) the lead authors names with a mini-résumé behind their names, establishing their academic credentials (MPH, RN, LD, CNS, LDN, Ph.D., etc). As for the back page, instead of the standard endorsement by food industry and nutritionist celebrities, the authors and/or publishers have decided to reserve this space for providing more information about the book's content, and quizzing (via Multiple-Choice-Questions) the potential reader about his/her nutritional savvy, and listing no less than 10 recipes described in the book. On top of all these benefits, the book is reasonably priced ($19.95 US; £12.99 UK; $23.95 CAN)

As for the CONTENT (and substance): In addition to a section for Acknowledgments (pp. 184) and an elaborate index (pp. 186-192), the book is structured around the main food groups essential for good health:
* Introduction (pp. 7-23);
* Chapter 1: Boost Omega-3's (pp. 24-54);
* Chapter 2: Add-in antioxidants (pp. 55-85);
* Chapter 3: Fabulous fiber (pp. 86-117);
* Chapter 4: Change the energy balance (pp. 118-152); and...
* Chapter 5: Be carb savvy (pp. 153-183).

The introduction is worthy a separate mention: in this 17-page exposé, the authors introduce the readers to the basics of nutrition and principles for gaining and maintaining good health. They do so with a) two-column text; b) five tables, three figures, and two pictures! As they say, "A picture is worth a 1,000 words..." In this well-illusstrated book, the authors have made good use of the one picture/thousand words concept!

Each chapter basically follows the same pattern:
* An introduction to the subject with a two-column text;
* A `FYi' insert in the shape of text surrounded by a circle;
* A series of two-page recipes, with text on one side, and a full-page color photograph on the other page. The mouth-watering rendition of these full-page and full-color recipes is worth, by itself, the price of the book!

Each full-page recipe contains the following...
* Introduction to the recipe;
* Measurements of ingredients;
* Description of the various steps in the recipe;
* And finally a nutritional analysis (i.e., calories, fat, protein, carbohydrate, fiber and cholesterol content, if any).

Many, though NOT all, recipes come with full-page color photographs. Some recipes are illustrated with a two-page photograph a) `Flaxseed blueberry walnut pancakes' (pp. 98-99); b) `Fiesta gazpacho with grilled shrimp' (pp. 128-129); and c) `Orange mango chicken fajitas' (pp. 140-141). In particular, I like the recipes for...
* `Smoked salmon sushi' (pp. 46-47); and
* `Mediterranean stuffed tomato' (pp. 74-75).
* Of particular esthetic, culinary, and other value to this reviewer is the recipe for `Peach-berry Port Wine Gelatin!' (pp 176). The adjoining picture features no less than three delicious berries, namely raspberries, blueberries and blackberries (thank goodness, not the electronic types).

I also appreciate the great care the authors and publishers have given to the authors' background (See `About the authors,' pp. 185). Two engaging full-color photographs of the two authors, with matching informative and descriptive caption(s).

C. What can be improved

Alas, as much as I wish, as a book reviewer, to find something to gripe about a book under my review, in this case I could NOT find anything substantial.Since it is NOT designed to be an academic book, there is not need to complain about the absence of footnotes, endnotes, and references cited. This makes it all the more readable by its intended audience.

I am fully and painfully aware that Rowe and Davis did NOT get the fullest acclaim they deserve.Some reviewers take the authors to task about including canola oil (e.g., Telecia Radke), tomato recipes (e.g., Dr. Loulou) and omega-3 to 6 ratio (e.g. Dr. Mark S. Edinger). As any person who has lived long enough has discovered and knows, one cannot please all the people all the time. In my own medical school training, we was told tomatoes are good for our health as a good source for antioxidants. Now, according to Dr. Loulou, tomatoes should be avoided at all cost! Whom am I to believe? Same thing with canola oil. If you don't like it, leave it...! But please, do NOT ever ruin a book's rating (20%), just because you happen to find canola oil or tomatoes toxic for `your' body. If it is as toxic as Telecia says, why doesn't the FDA ban its import from Canada? With a rating of 1/5, Dr. Mark S. Edinger does NOT earn points for charity, compassion and generosity towards the authors (1/5 stars = 20%). Was the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio the ENTiRE concern of the book? If NOT, why would Dr. Edinger give such a low rating? Does he not remember that we will be judged by the measure we judge others... And I dare NOT judge Dr. Edinger, whether he is a lowly doctor in some rural county clinic, or the chief medical adviser to the latest Pope, as a rating of (-) infinity would NOT do proper justice to his misplaced impudence and utmost arrogance. In such important matters of truth vs. untruth, I'd rather be known as a no-respecter of persons...

This book has been published in 2008, and this review written in 2010. In two years, much can and does happen, requiring, amng other things, the update of the authors' biosketch. I can think of at least three-five things in the life of the LEAD author that may need to be updated in the next edition of this great book: a) city of residence, b) marital status, c) number of people living at home, d) possibly even her new vocational status, and e) update on the number of dogs living with the author at home.

In the acknowledgment(s) section (pp. 184), lead author Barbara Rowe mentions the need for, and assistance of, food tasters and testers. In anticipation of a new, revised, and improved, edition of this otherwise GREAT book, I endeavor to apply for the newly created official position of `food taster cum food tester...' Besides tasting the food, as a semi-professional photographer (or advanced amateur), I can also double as a self-appointed graphic reporter for the book's many recipes. If and once that happens, however, I could no longer write an impartial review, as it would be an inherent conflict of interest, being a food taster cum photographer vs. an objective book reviewer without any vested fiduciary interests!

D. Conclusion

This highly readable book is a great value, i.e., getting the proverbial most `bang for the buck!' [where else can one find a recipe with a full-color picture for $0.137 or 14 cents per recipe, assuming there are at least a hundred of them in this book?] Furthermore, it can change a reader's approach to his/her health through the preparation and consumption of a great variety of healthy and health-promoting foods. I suggest this book should be a daily companion of any housewife and/or househusband, or whoever prepares the meals for the loved ones in every English-speaking household in America and around the world... [A translation into major languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Polish, and German, among others, should follow in short order...] Its place is on the kitchen counter, rather than collecting the proverbial dust on the shelves in one's personal library!

NOTE: No book, except perhaps for the Bible, is perfect and can, therefore, be improved upon; the same principle applies to a book reviewer like me. Should you, the reader of this review, have any question(s), comment(s), and/or suggestion(s) about my review, please feel free to contact me: I can be reached, at no extra cost to you, via email at {jpheldt123[at]yahoo[dot]com}. I will be looking forward to hearing from you soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anti-Inflammatory Foods for Health
Tonight I made the Pink Salmon Cakes with Mango-Raspberry chutney and it was spectacular!Have tried several salmon cake recipes but this is TRUELY THE BEST I have ever had!It was light and deliciously full of flavors of the mango, raspberry, sweet corn and tomato..a great summer dinner.Husband doesn't like cilantro so I used parsley instead.Can't wait to try the other recipes!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Missed a major inflammatory food group!
This book starts out great with the discussion of how food can inflame the body with an unbalanced intake of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids.However the authors must be unaware that all grains, legumes and most seeds have a 20:1 ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 making them inflammatory.Several recipes in the book are then inflammatory because of the grain.This is a tough pill to swallow but it appears that the human genome functions better with a balanced 1:1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids and this genetic trait was in place before agricultural practices which led to grain consumption and more recently seed oils which are very inflammatory.Foods consumed prior to agriculture would have been fruits and vegetables, wild game, fish and moderate portion of nuts. Ironically all these foods have a well balanced ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids.Go Paleo!!

1-0 out of 5 stars a bit deceitful
Although there are good recipes in the book, I am amazed the authors endorse the use of canola oil and margarine.Canola oil comes from the rape seed, which is part of the mustard family of plants. Rape is the most toxic of all food-oil plants. Like soy, rape is a weed. Insects will not eat it; it is deadly poisonous! The oil from the rape seed is a hundred times more toxic than soy oil.
Canola is a semi-drying oil that is used as lubricant, fuel, soap and synthetic rubber base, and as an illuminant for the slick color pages you see in magazines. It is an industrial oil and does not belong in the body!
Margine isa synthetic food and a hydrogenated oil.Loads of literature to support eliminating it from your diet.
I use the recipes but make substitutions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Book
I learned so much from reading the information about nutrition that Rowe and Davis share in this book.The recipes are delicious and easy to follow, and the illustrations are enticing.I'm looking forward to trying more of the recipes and learning to incorporate healthy foods in my everyday meals. I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars OK book...
I of course am an arthritis sufferer. I was really excited to get this book. The book claims that all you have to do to get "rid" of arthritis is to eliminate such and such foods or add such and such foods to your diet and lifestyle. Ok, I have tried several of these things including a fast to ready my body for this... and I have certainly had no miracle cure... not even close. Something tells me that if this were all that were necessary to eliminate arthritis, there would be a lot less arthritis in this world... and there is not. I will continue to try some of the methods in this book to see what I can accomplish... with a positive attitude as well, but to sum it up? I don't think this book has the miracle cure any more than any of the other books out there do. I do agree with some of the philosophy in the book and there may be some useful information as well... but certainly no healing cure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feeling so much better...
Thanks to this book and it's timely suggestions my arthritis is much improved. Alkaline diet is mentioned as a solution to the stiff joints and inflammatory process and I have found this to be true. While I am gradually changing my diet, rather than going "cold turkey" (from things like chocolate) I have noticed a big difference in how I feel. This book is the missing piece in my program (which includes Qigong and drinking grape juice & Certo). Many thanks for a beautifully written and sensitive look at this common condition (one third of all Americans will be diagnosed with some form of arthritis).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book On Healing Yourself
Dr. McGarey wrote this tour de force of alternative treatments for arthritis based on his years of experience in applying treatments based on what Edgar Cayce said on the subject before his death in 1945. We have one body with integrated systems which is itself integrated with the eternal, universal, healing energy. We were not created solely for allopathic medicine to poke, probe, scan and medicate. Separateness is not our nature.

We are responsible for what we are. What we eat, do, think and select as our ideals determines much of how well our body systems maintain their integrity. In this excellent book are suggestions such as avoiding chocolates and meat, massagingwith peanut oil (too simple for the drug companies to profit from), spinal adjustments by an osteopath, taking up meditation (does anyone now really believe in the discredited mind/body duality?), and a number of other modalities of treatment of the integrated body/mind/spirit creatures we are.

These are not 'take a pill and call me in ten days' kinds of healing methods. If you are willing to persevere in changing yourself in an integrated way for the better you must be prepared to make these challenging applications for a couple of years before you are entitled to gainsay them. The writer of this review has for year and a half applied some, but not all, of the recommendations (giving up chocolate is hard, but can be done) and can say as a personal recommendation that stiffness and pain in the spine, knees and hip are much reduced, to the point of simply no longer being a consideration.

The offshoot: this book is recommended reading - but listen! don't just read, apply! Begin! Change yourself. You can do it.

Product Description
The connection between inflammation and heart disease, arthritis, and other chronic ailments has become increasingly clear. Many food allergies and poor dietary choices overstimulate the immune system and cause inflammatory responses that erode the body’s wellness and pave the path for ill health. Based on her naturopathic practice, Jessica Black has devised a complete program for how to eat and cook to minimize and even prevent inflammation and its consequences. The first part of the book explains the benefits of the anti-inflammatory diet with an accessible discussion of the science behind it. The second half contains 108 recipes. The author offers many substitution suggestions and includes a healthy ingredient tip with each recipe. Most of the dishes can be prepared quickly and easily by even novice cooks. A week of sample menus for summer months and another for winter are included, as well as a substitutions chart, allowing readers to modify their favorite recipes to increase their healing potential. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I'd had this book 50 years ago!
I studied everything I could find on keeping my family healthy according to the best available information at the time, and I practiced what I learned.I thought I was doing pretty well, but with the information in this book, I could have done even better! Fewer meds and more of the right kinds of foods (non-inflammatory)would have been very helpful. Anyone who is concerned about health for whatever reason could benefit.I certainly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!
This is a great book everyone should read and Amazon.com is the best place to purchase it. THANKS for a seamless transaction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as well-researched or current as I had hoped
This book is an OK starting resource for those who know little or nothing aobut nutrition, but I was hoping for a one-stop resource that would concisely and accurately summarize the current research on diet and inflammation, and this is not it. While it does contain a list of references at the back, the many controversial assertions (such as drinking absolutely massive amounts of water, and avoiding all nightshade vegetables including tomatoes and spinach, which are very high in documented health benefits)are not footnoted and supported by specific research. The discussion portion of the book is only 54 pages and contains little one couldn't find with a quick internet search. While the recipes look tasty, they take up the rest of the 225 pages and I have plenty of other cook books. Also, while the author gives a few general tips about nutrition, she doesn't mention the research on turmeric, which is perhaps the most promising anti-inflammatory spice, and she doesn't mention other important areas of research such as the effects of low aspirin doses and the extremely important relationship between inflammation and gum disease. I will be looking further.

4-0 out of 5 stars some good recipes
This is an interesting and well written book. I wanted to get some easy starter recipes for the anti-inflammation diet and they have turned out better than I expected in most cases. The Easy Pancakes were easy to make - not so easy to eat! But the Hearty Healthy cookies are pretty darn good and the Sweet Potato soup was delicious! I would say that the few days that I've tried to stick to the Anti-inflammation diet - I do think I had less aches and pains.Unfortunately, I haven't worked at it like I should. The author provides all the information you need, reasons to do it, and a variety of easy recipes to try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource for patients
Dr. Jessica Black has eloquently explained how the food we eat can affect and is paramount our health and our well-being. Her eating plan is easy to implement, and all the recipes I've tried so far are delicious.I will definitely recommend this book as a resource for my patients.

Product Description
A revolution is about to happen. An arthritis cure has been discovered, & it s as simple as taking two inexpensive, over the counter nutritional supplements. Provides the complete nine step Arthritis Cure program, a full & understandable analysis of the reams of medical research, & a seven step strategy for preventing osteoarthritis. Dr. Theodosakis has listed invaluable information on dosage & the products on the market. He also tells you the truth about painkillers, gives you realistic diet & exercise programs to follow, & helps you overcome the blues that come with any chronic condition.Amazon.com Review
The word "cure" in the title is a bitmisleading, but this book certainly makes a persuasive argument infavor of treating osteoarthritis with two common nutritionalsupplements--glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates--and following aprogram emphasizing better nutrition and exercise. The supplements arecommonly used in Europe and Asia, where they've been tested indouble-blind, placebo-controlled studies (the gold standard formedical research). They haven't been thoroughly tested in the UnitedStates, the authors contend, because drug companies can't patent thesupplements and thus won't fund the research. The book also contains achapter detailing a seven-step arthritis-prevention program. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic Info that Can be Found on the Net
Much of this book is page filler, it advocates Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate as its main "cure" and then talks about eating foods high in antioxidants (which is really old basic info that we can find in plenty of books and websites). It is also very repetative, I remember reading the same subject three times near the beginning (page filler.)

Although the book is helpful, especially for really ignorant newbies who hate the internet, it needs to be thinned out and the common knowledge parts taken out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure : The Medical Miracle
I injured my knee around Labor Day and four months later I had minimal results with physical therapy and NSAIDs. My once active life had stopped, every activity I tried, even walking, aggravated my knee. I started on the Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate program along with the vitamin supplements outlined in the book and had great results. After just a few weeks, I am able to hike and workout again. I feel better than I have in months! I know several friends on Glucosomine, but I felt better with the book outlining the dosage and other vitamins to compliment. I have not needed any NSAIDs since I started this therapy. I like that this program has almost no side effects and can help my injury without surgery. Try it for yourself, what do you have to lose but the pain?

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile and perhaps more
This was followed by Maximizing the Arthritis Cure (1998) which I'll also report on here, treating both books as one.My initial reaction was, this is either a public service or a hustle.Written by three differentlaureled academics and obviously put together by committee, this first bookwas a big time best seller and demanded a sequel.Most of the diet advicewas like something I had read twenty years ago.The exercise programditto.The use of glucosamine and chondroitin was the real difference.Infact, the purpose of the book could be seen as legitimizing the use ofthese supplements in the treatment of osteoarthritis.People bought thebook in the hope that it would help them with their pain.They also boughtthe book so that they would be motivated to try glucosamine andchondroitin.Many people understandably would not try the supplementswithout the seal of approval provided by an authoritative book like this. The question is-and it is the big question-is their program any good, or isit just another feel good pep talk fronting for another bogus approach? Iwas a little uncertain since the book jacket was red, white and blue, andwe all know the quote about patriotism being "the last refuge of ascoundrel."

So I tried glucosamine and chondroitin and stayed fairlyclose to their overall program.Two years have passed and although Icannot say for certain, it is my belief that the supplements are valuable. At any rate, my arthritic knee is much improved.

In the follow-up book,the authors give information on other treatments.

I have to say that Ithink they've done a positive service in writing these two books.Theinformation about healing in general and about prevention and about thepositive effects of exercise and attitude are worthwhile.The authors mayhave made megabucks (or maybe they didn't), but I don't feel they rippedanybody off, on the contrary.I am happy to be positive even though Istill think "cure" is probably too strong a word for what their program cando, although I only have my own experience to go on.Their reports of thedouble blind tests that have been conducted are good, but a long way fromconvincing proof that glucosamine and chrondoitin and exercises can cureosteoarthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure
After reading this book by Dr. Theodosakis, I recommended it tomy grandmother and 35 year-old girlfriend, both of whom haveosteoarthritis.Not only has it lessened grandma's pain, but also her depression has largely lifted.My friend, who is a fellow registered nurse, was thrilled that she was able to stop taking acetaminophen following her second month of taking glucosamine and chondroitin.She believes the dietary changes she made after reading the book were also helpful toward making her body more supple, like a slinky.I was indeed surprised to find some negative comments written by readers.Perhaps they were victims of the many fraudulent products our there with insufficient quantities of glucosamine and chondroitin in them.I found Dr. Theo's website to be very helpful in learning more about specific good and bad products.I will continue to recommend this book to anyone and everyone who tells me that they suffer from arthritis.There is hope!END

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure : The Medical Miracle That Can Halt, Reve
I found this book an excellent presentation on glucosamine, chondroitin, the various surgical options, advice about exercise and diet (the importance of weight loss, etc). For me it seems to be working asadvertised. I have osteoarthritus of the hip and knee and am seeingnoticeable improvements.I have a friend that is a physical therapist andshe has been using glucosamine/chondroitin and has noticed significantimprovements in the use of her ankle and her ability to walk. Certainlyglucosamine/chondroitin are not replacements for everthing as diet/weightloss are also extremely important. I recommend this book highly. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't be afraid of alternative therapies.
This book helped us understand the diverse views of the different arthritis treatments and offered good advice.My elderly aunt has been plagued with arthritis for years and hasn't always been willing to tryalternative treatments. As her pain progressed we convinced her to try theglucosamine and condroitan blends. She is seeing substantial improvements!Our daughter is taking it as a way to heal her back injuries due to anaccident. She no longer needs those heavy duty pain killers.An additionalsite that offers more documentation as well as these (and others)supplements is iHerb. They do a wonderful job at documenting the diversenutritional supplements they supply and their service is reliable. In fact,I think I first read about Theodosakis' books on their site. Treatarthritis naturally and see how much better you feel without those painkillers that make your mind fuzzy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding coverage of all reasonable, effective treatments
This is an excellent, concise, highly usable book about ALL reasonable treatments that show merit and promise for treating arthritis, both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.Though the coverage of eachtreatment is remarkably brief and to-the-point, it avoids being just a"shopping list" of what to take; and manages to prioritize, inwell-reasoned arguments, what makes the most sense to try and why.

Don'texpect a flimsy health food store brochure filled with questionable claims,or some pamphlet telling you what you already know.This is a VERYwell-written, SUPERBLY organized, thorough and comprehensive book--a modelof how to cover conventional and alternative treatments of ANY disease.Ifyou buy just one book on dealing with arthritis, this should be it.(Andgiven how common arthritis is, it might make a thoughtful gift for someoneelse you know as well.) ... This book helped me so much.My Rheumatologist prescribed hydroxycholoroquine for my arthritis about 5 years ago.I had it so bad I could hardly walk.I could not bend my wrists or ankles.I was in so much pain.But the drug required that I see an opthomologist twice a year because there was a rare chance it could blind me!I didn't like the sound of that, so I sought alternatives.I found this book and followed the instructions the best I could.Now I am nearly pain free- have been for about 5 years - and I take absolutely no drugs for my arthritis!This book is a Godsend!

I was given this book at 18 years of age. I had been suffering from RA for the previous 7 years. At that point in my life I thought everything was hopeless, I'd never be able to work, no one would ever want to marry me and I would end up alone and in pain for the rest of my life.

Needles to say none of this happened. This book changed my life.
I put put heart and soul into following the recommendations and within a couple of weeks I went off the meds (much to my dr's disapproval mind you!) and have not looked back since. I have not had a flare up in 15 years.

This is my fifth time ordering this book (though up till now I have had to get it from AMazon UK)Not for myself but to give to others.I have even bought a copy for my doctor!No one should have to suffer needlessly and I really believe if there is anything you can do toimprove things you owe it to yourself to give it your best shot.I cringe everytime I hear someone say there is no cure for arthritis because it is simply not true.

I cannot recommend this book high enough, it is well written and simply makes sense.I hope that it helps you as much as it did me.

Best of luck!
