Product Description
The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome is the definitive handbook for anyone affected by Asperger's syndrome (AS). It brings together a wealth of information on all aspects of the syndrome for children through to adults.

Drawing on case studies and personal accounts from Attwood's extensive clinical experience, and from his correspondence with individuals with AS, this book is both authoritative and extremely accessible. Chapters examine: causes and indications of the syndrome; the diagnosis and its effect on the individual; theory of mind; the perception of emotions in self and others; social interaction, including friendships; long-term relationships; teasing, bullying and mental health issues; the effect of AS on language and cognitive abilities, sensory sensitivity, movement and co-ordination skills; and career development.

There is also an invaluable frequently asked questions chapter and a section listing useful resources for anyone wishing to find further information on a particular aspect of AS, as well as literature and educational tools.

Essential reading for families and individuals affected by AS as well as teachers, professionals and employers coming in contact with people with AS, this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone who needs to know or is interested in this complex condition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AS for the average person
If an individual is interested in studying Asperger
and doesn't have a PHD. in psychology, I highly
recommend this book. The personal testimonies are
the best for bringing the symptoms down to a personal
level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book in great shape
This is a great book!Very informational on Asperger Syndrome and well written (understandable). The book arrived in perfect condition. It took a while for it to arrive, but still arrived within the suggested arrival/shipping time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly complete
This is the most comprehensive, complete, and helpful book that I have ever found about Asperger's syndrome. It's great for anyone who has Asperger's syndrome, has a child with Asperger's syndrome, has a friend with Asperger's syndrome, or just wants to know more about the disease. This book doesn't give depressing prognosises, and yet doesn't skip important facts. The Kindle edition for this book is in AZW1 format, so it has its own fonts. This is quite a long book, but with its active Table of Contents (TOC), it's extremely easy to navigate.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complet Guide to Asperger's Syndrome
This is the BEST book about Asperger's Syndrome.I have ready many & this is by far the most informative. It really helps you understand why some reactions happen & it also makes you aware or notice that some reactions are symptoms of the syndrome. You just have a better appretiation of some of your child's quirks.I think it should be required reading for any person in education or with any daily contact with children.

5-0 out of 5 stars compare and contrast
I've known someone who may have been an Aspie but was also a cruel person. This book told me that is not an Aspie trait; people with Asperger's tend to be victims of others and not cruel towards them. They can be seen as cruel due to lack of social skills but when people are really hurtful there is something else going on.Having Aspie traits myself, see below, that was reassuring.

I don't think most Aspies are perceived as cruel or like narcissists. They may be seen as unusual or quiet b/c they know they sound odd and maybe they've learned to be quiet due to negative feedback in conversation. It does seem baffling to other people that this very bright person doesn't 'get' this stuff but - Tony Attwood describes this in his book.

I do think Asperger's has gone from being virtually unknown in the U.S. 30 years ago to being overdiagnosed now.At this point, every guy with an interest in science and mathematics who is in any way eccentric is potentially hearing that he has Asperger's.Women in those fields - maybe not so much b/c the stereotype is a guy.People really do not see sometimes that it is not just technical/mathematical/scientific skill combined with some eccentricities. There is also a genuine bewilderment about the 'rules' of other people and how to 'get' how others think.

This book shows life from the perspective of some people with Asperger's and provides ways of treatment.

Another issue that I see comes up is from some Aspies who say, we are good the way we are and don't need to be like the NTs (neurotypicals).I actually agree with this.Yet I support some kind of therapy or treatment anyway. The reason is that in my experience, Aspies can have a very high level of anxiety b/c they know they don't 'get' this stuff. The good kind of treatment is not about fixing or changing them.It is about lowering their anxiety level so that they will feel more comfortable in the world and with themselves and other people.Personally, I don't think treatment turns an Aspie into an NT, not if it is any good anyway. But it may help reduce social anxiety and help the person realize that maybe the NTs can understand them better.

I don't view myself as Aspie or non-Aspie.I have been influenced by both in different situations.Like red and blue combine to make purple, I feel I'm some combination that is not really either one. That sounds odd but it's where I feel I am.Not on the spectrum but not NT either.Influenced by both.

However I WAS diagnosed with Asperger's based on literally 5 minutes talking to a neurologist who saw that I was introverted, had trouble with social skills, and had some clumsiness and she immediately said I had it.My doctor was furious b/c it takes a lengthy period of observation with detailed questions to diagnose it.She told me I did not have it but had some of its traits, and that was different. My problem is not so much how to 'get' people b/c I tend to do that, but learning social skills and having a 'disorder of interpretation' where I see what people do but don't understand it.This is not the same as a thought disorder. It means not being able to process the reasons for or impact of other people's actions, or my own feelings, which has lowered my social skills.I'm working on this. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Book About Asperger's Kids That Everyone Can Understand
I highly recommend this book for anyone whose child has recently been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I have given many copies to grandparents, aunts & uncles, teachers, neighbors and friends. This book explains AS to 'neurotypicals' in clear, non threatening and understandable language.

My son's elderly grandparents were in the mindset of "That diagnosis is just a bunch of baloney. There's nothing wrong with him that some good old-fashioned discipline won't cure!". (Never mind that we'd tried every kind of discipline in the books!) They read this book (and the pediatric neurologist's report) and came to a whole new understanding of how our son's brain works and why he acts the way he does. Their relationship improved so much that he spent two weeks with them last Summer and will again this next Summer! I credit a lot of that new understanding to this book.

It has been useful with his teachers, as well (he is in a regular classroom). Most teachers don't have the time to go to the seminars or take the classes they'd like to on subjects like this - this book gives them a quick and no nonsense way to understand the challenges that face kids with Asperger's.

All in all, this simple book is a gift for parents who are struggling to help other people understand their child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for parents and teachers with children with Aspergers
This book was the first resource I read after being told my grandson who lives with us has Aspergers. It was very helpful in describing what Aspergers is and what we can expect in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great forhelping people understand the basics of Asberger Syndrome
This book is great for helping people get a basic understanding of what Asberger Syndrome is.Its great for helping a child who has AS understand the things that are hard for them, while also assuring them that they are not the only ones who struggle in some kinds of situations. We actually went through it with our son, and then gave a copy to his teacher and our family, so they could also understand the issues he faces. This allows them to be much more understanding and helpful in practical ways. Its a very easy read (about 10 minutes), but presents the information very well. We highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars *A must have book for children with Asperger's and their family/friends*
My 4 1/2 year old son was recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Although he's on the younger side and my husband and I haven't told him about his diagnosis as of yet, we knew that family and friends needed to know why he acts the way he does at times. I am so happy we chose this book. It is absolutley perfect! My husband even said, "Wow, now that I understand!" we let our family and friends use it and read it to their children. It is geared for 7-15 year olds, but I think adults understand it just as well (better than all the website info.)

A few things about Asperger's don't apply to our son...like having being obsessed with a "special interest", so when it metnioned this part in the book, I simply said, "At this time (name) does not have any "special interests" that he is obsessed with." and I printed it on a clear label and stuck it to the bottom of the page. In the beginnong of the book I also wrote a little note to our family members thanking them for taking the time to read the book (an easy, fairly quick read).
Everyone loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Both of us learning about AS....my son and I.
Every school year for the last three years we have found a book regarding my son's disorders....ADHD,Tourettes and AS. I came up with this idea from a book that I read and have found it useful. My son is going to be in sixth grade this fall and this book was still age appropriate. The language in it was at a level of understanding without all the big termnology. I have purchased five of these books for him to take to school..it is amazing how many people don't even know what AS is. This book is great for kids, adults alike...some people don't have the time to sit and read a lengthy book. This book covers it very well and you have a better understanding. Just a great book and looking forward to school this year and sharing with other students as well as teachers and parents. My son enjoys having people as him questions after reading it...gives him a sense of confidence and helps others understand how out of control things can be for him. ... Read more

Product Description
Have you ever been called a freak or a geek? Have you ever felt like one? Luke Jackson is 13 years old and has Asperger Syndrome. Over the years Luke has learned to laugh at such names but there are other aspects of life which are more difficult. Adolescence and the teenage years are a minefield of emotions, transitions and decisions and when a child has Asperger Syndrome, the result is often explosive.
Luke has three sisters and one brother in various stages of their adolescent and teenage years but he is acutely aware of just how different he is and how little information is available for adolescents like himself.
Drawing from his own experiences and gaining information from his teenage brother and sisters, he wrote this enlightening, honest and witty book in an attempt to address difficult topics such as bullying, friendships, when and how to tell others about AS, school problems, dating, relationships and morality.
Luke writes briefly about his younger autistic and AD/HD brothers, providing amusing insights into the antics of his younger years and advice for parents, carers and teachers of younger AS children. However, his main reason for writing was because "so many books are written about us, but none are written directly to adolescents with Asperger Syndrome. I thought I would write one in the hope that we could all learn together." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Bright Kid
This is an excellent book from a very bright kid who suffers from this syndrome. It is written from a British point of view but should be beneficial regardless of country of origin. Now if I can just get my 33 year old son to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My # one suggestion for parents and teachers of AS kids
I love this book!! As a of parent 4, the oldest being an 11 yo boy with AS it was the most helpfull (and I'v read alot!!).Cause its writen by a 13 yo boy with AS its also a fun cute at times funny read.It helped so much with the nagging questions you have as a parent..like weather or not to tell them of there dx?? or why do they do that all the time and should I stop them??I first read this when my son was first dx with AS at 7...I'm rereading it now that he is in Adolescence, Then I will have him read it.I think he will very much enjoy it as he can so relate with Luke.I have asked his Middle school teachers to read it aswell.Never really understood what whent on in my boys head untill reading this book.Must read for all adolescence with AS and thier parents and support team. Its nice to know there is a light at this tunnel called Aspergers and its kinda cool. Aftet reading this book my new song for life is "I can see clearly now" by bob marley.

1-0 out of 5 stars Freaks, Geeks & Asperger Syndrome: A User Guide to Adolescence
Oh, I wish I had paid attention to the other reviews. So sorry I wasted my money on this. It was recommended by my son's school so I naively thought it might be beneficial to my own teenager. IT'S NOT. It's audience is truly British teens as there is a lot that needs to be translated into American English (at least culturally). This kid has no clue the conflicts faced by an American teen so his advice misses the mark. For a teenager who is on the autism spectrum, there are some glaring omissions in his story/advice that are difficult for my own son to get past (like he mentions his family repeatedly but at no time does he mention his dad). The book desperately needs editing and revamping in order to market to an American audience. Personally don't purchase it (I'm trying to figure out if I can get a refund so I can mail it back!)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great, if not particularly well-written, book
This book was recommended to me by a support group for Aspie teens, and I was fascinated by Luke Jackson's frank portrayal of his life as an Aspie. At times, his writing lacks polish, but the fresh perspective on a puzzling disorder more than makes up for any flaws in the writing. This is a recommended read for parents of children "on the Autism Spectrum" and for anyone who wants to know more about Asperger's Syndrome. Jackson's small book is a huge achievement.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fancinating First-Person View
of life with AS. This is a fantastic book by a thirteen year old with Asperger Syndrome. As soon as I finish reading it I plan to read it to my son.

The book is written as a self-help book for teens who have AS or Autism, but also has explanations for teachers, parents and others.I especially like the parts where he details how his thinking processes work.It explains so much.

The author also goes into details about variations on the syndrome that he has not personally experienced, so it does cover more than just his experience. There is also an extensive resource list in the back.

This is a great book for teens and tweens who are on the autism spectrum and for their family members and teachers. The author is from Britain, so there are a few words and cultural differences that US readers will note, but these are minor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Asperger challenged person
This is truly a gentle book to learn about what Aspergers can look like. The tad down side is my teen read this and loved the cats but then said well all this sounds like personality quircks and that well almost anyone could have some of that stuff going on. Now said teen did see where I fit in in alot of ways in that book hehe so I would say job well done still. This helped me too for I was born in the sixties and well Aspergers wasnt common knowledge even amongst medical doctors bringing wee ones into the world. I needed a gentle way of seeing if this had anything to do with me. Folks I have been around in the last 2 years have brought up Aspergers alot asking if I have ever been labled with this. No I hadnt but I can see what others have seen and experienced around me in this book and it was a kind and gentle positive way of approaching Aspergers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for explaining AS to kids and adults
I am a 28 y.o young man afflicted with Aspergers, and this book sums up my life experiences in a nutshell. It is a perfect resource for explaining to kids what A.S is, and for helping children with Aspergers to cope with life's challenges. People with A.S need to be aware that they are simply different, not disabled. I recommend this book highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute Book
This book was recommended by a psychologist for my thirteen year
old son.I was a bit dubious when I looked at a couple of preview
pages but decided to go ahead and buy it anyway. No doubt it is
appealing visually and it is an inciteful book it is not suitable for an
older child. They may take it that they are being treated like a five
year old when many children with asperger's would prefer to have the facts
laid before them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-Threatening/Love This!
Trying to explain Asperger's to children & adults alike, isn't an easy thing to do.Personally, I've found this book to be simply delightful & non-threatening in its approach.I decided to purchase it and use it as a tool to help me explain Aspergers to my 11 year old daughter.Knowing her short attention span, her automatic aversiveness to everything new, her negativity and knee-jerk impression that helpfulness from others is some sort of attack, this book seemed to be what I needed. Not only was my motherly instinct correct, my experience reading this with my daughter was over and above my expectations.

I introduced this book by reading the title and asking my daughter to see if the cats inside reminded her of anyone she knew. She watched very curiously from behind a blanket as I held the book, and within the first few pages, her eyes were lighting up.I could see she immediately was able to relate to the pictures. The entire book is filled with adorable and funny pictures of cats wearing seemingly scratchy clothes, being affectionate, being different and being themselves.

My next step is going to be loaning this book to my daughter's teachers, and then quite possibly passing it on to some of the moms, so they might use it to explain my daughter's exceptionalities to their daughters.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
This is a very well written book.It gives a compassionate stance on children with asberger syndrome. Certainly gave me a better understanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents of AS kids - Buy this book!Read this book! Use this book!
I bought this book a while ago, but didn't start reading it until recently because I was reading other books (learning about AS; dealing with schools and IEPs; etc.).I have an 11 year old AS child who wasn't diagnosed until he was 9.From the first page of the Introduction, I knew this was going to be helpful and that the author had experienced the same things I have.

This is the way I like self-help non-fiction because she offers practical tips (VERY practical tips) on how to handle certain situations and the book is formatted so it is quick and easy to find the issue / tip you're looking for.She explains each tip with wonderful, in-depth background, but you only have to read that if you need to.

The author also provides not only "on the ground" advice (dealing with every day problems), but also a "38,000 feet" view. For example, she recognizes that the parents / caregivers of an AS child is an unbelievably difficult job that can task the body with stress, anxiety, and just sheer exhaustion. She provides excellent advice and suggestions for those parents / caregivers, like "keeping the tank full" because if you as the parent aren't taking care of your own health, pleasure, happiness, you won't be very helpful to your child either.

Thank you for writing this book. This is one of the books that lives up to its goal and title. If you have an AS child, you should not just buy this book and let it sit on the shelf like I did; you need to read it and use it IMMEDIATELY.You will see immediate results in yourself, in your child, in your child's school, and in your family.

I love the insight that is within the book. It has given me great ideas to help with my son. But the pages were falling out as I was reading it and it was brand new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
This book is so great. It's easy, non-medical and I found myself relating to so many of the things Brenda says.
I feel like I have found a resource that will actually help in the day to day struggle.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC Book for any parent! A MUST Buy!!!
This book is SO fantastic. The mom that wrote this hit every nail on the head and more. If your child is newly diagnosed this is the book for you. Even parents who have had children on the spectrum for years will appreciate it but I think its even more relevant for those who are a bit lost.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommend
This book is a good basis of where to start understanding Aspergers. It is easy to read and understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars asperger's understood
A hopeful and encouraging look at a syndrome lately coming into public awareness and afflicting perhaps 1 in 300 people. The lifelong eccentric, the silent and aloof child, the loner--Asperger's sufferers perhaps? Coined by Lorna Wing in 1981, the term described the kind of behavior observed by Hans Asperger in 1944. He used the term "autistic psychopathy" to describe 4 unusual Viennese boys.
Since Asperger's syndrome (AS) occurs on the autism scale, its dominant characteristics are a lack of empathy, naïve, inappropriate, one-sided interaction, little or no ability to form friendships, pedantic, repetitive speech, poor non-verbal communication, intense absorption in certain subjects, and clumsy or odd movements.
Attwood includes the Australian scale for AS as well as diagnostic criteria. The following factors seem to be crucial to the long term success of a person with AS: a mentor who understands AS as well as the person himself, providing guidance and encouragement to adapt to social situations; a partner who commits to and compensates for the difficulties the AS person suffers; an engrossing job or special interest; personal acceptance of the AS condition; and finally--a natural recovery. Some AS sufferers "get it" in their late 20s and 30s, learning the subtleties of non-verbal communication, conversation repair, etc. to such an extent that they are able to continue their lives with only their closest associates knowing of their condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my marriage of 23 years
I purchased this book a month ago in a last ditch effort to save my 23 year marriage to a man with Asbergers and to better understand our triplets w/As as well. The boys always had the dx but my husband was hesitant to accept the diagnosis. Although I knew what AS was and felt I was very knowledgable I wasn't. This book really takes you from the begining of a diagnosis, TO HOW TO AFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE AND UNDERSTAND YOURSELF AND YOUR AS FAMILY MEMBER. This book is wonderful not just for marriages will work for any relationship w/ an AS. My AS son is in a relationship with an AS girl, and asked me if he could borrow the book,:)
Our marriage of 23 yearsa month ago was ready to blow up in smoke. Is now on the road to a comfortable place of understanding and communication.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for AS/non-AS partnerships
This was the most helpful book in actually explaining to the reader what the DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for adult AS actually translates to, in layman's terms, and what those criteria may look like to a non-Asperger partner. For non-AS/AS partners who want their relationships to get better, who know they love one another and who desire to stay together, Ashley Stanford has given us a wonderful resource. She's ever hopeful, loving, and respectful of her relationship with her AS husband, while remaining honest in her sharing of how difficult it can be sometimes. Stanford shares the insights she's gained from living in an AS/non-AS marriage. She sheds light on how the many forms and nuances of Asperger syndrome may present itself, which can lead to difficulties for long-term relationships, as well as how to understand what those actions really mean. This understanding helps non-AS partners to avoid hurt feelings and promote better understanding between partners for their differences. This was the most upbeat, supportive, encouraging book I've read to date, and I've read many.I'd recommend this book highly to those who are determined to have a healthier relationship with a partner who has AS.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Got the Goods
Thinking I maybe had Asperger's (later found out I didn't), I sent away for a half-dozen books on Asperger's from Amazon. This book, written by a N/T with an Aspie marriage partner, resonated with me best. Each book I've gleaned or finished has its strengths. "Pretending to be Normal" offering a sometimes confusing and painful but vivid and earnest first-hand account; "Aspergers in Love" digesting sometimes revealing, sometimes sketchy results from interviewing 41 adults, mostly men, with AS; and "The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome" with its definitive, in-depth knowledge. Ashley Stanford's book, though, I felt, cut right to the chase. It's very straightforward, intelligent, illuminating and compassionate -- offering a bulleted list of traits in the first few pages, along with a summary and example of the various diagnostic criteria used around the world. While aimed at the N/T partner to better cope and appreciate an Aspy partner's often alternate-universe ways, it doubles as a heartfelt revelation and validation for anyone with Asperger's or possessing a few Aspie traits (I'm faceblind and ultrasensitive to sound, for instance). It offers compassionate understanding on making unlikely relationships work. For anyone who thinks they might be or know of an Aspie and wants to better appreciate and grok their rarefied realities, or better understand the mysteries of human behavior in general, this book's a gem.

From her introduction: "I believe that someday we will wake up as a civilization and realize that the Aspie traits that now confuse us are part of the core of human progress."

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I got this book a few days ago and I'm half-way through it. I've already gained a MUCH better understanding of him and the problems in our relationship. What's more, this book frequently gives real-life solutions that have worked for other couples dealing with problems. I'd recommend this book to anyone whose partner has a diagnosis of AS. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Anxiety and AS
Easy to read and informative. This is a good buy if you suffer from these two conditions.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Handy Little Guide.
I've never been diagnosed with any sort of personality or learning disorder. My family and I have suspected it for some time, however. One suspect is Asperger's Syndrome--while I don't want to condition myself to believe I am an "Aspie" without proffessional assessment, I can assess some Vine books. The first for consideration is Nick Dubin's "Asperger Syndrome and Anxiety." Sorry it took so long--I've been reviewing a lot of interesting stuff!

The writing is sound. The author mostly avoids being a "little professor" with unnecessary jargon or excessively formal grammar. Yet he doesn't shy from some basic counseling and psychiatric terms. I estimate a 9th or 10th grade reading level. The book also appears to carry over ideas from Asperger Syndrome and Bullying, providing a continuity and transition for the familiar reader.

As slim as the volume already is, wordiness does detract from the read. It's okay to use contractions, and to replace "medical science has proven" with "medicine proves" or "medicine proved". Also, repetition of key points is a fundamental of exposition, but it can also be annoying. Please don't confuse repetition with the "action points" at the end of each chapter--I think those are a good idea.

The idea of this book is more introduction than a therapeutic course. It summarizes the original research, opinions, or treatments of various doctors in the field. The author lends weight to what he feels is going to be the most useful to his audience, as opposed to bogging down the text with an objective history or index of treatment. Dubin periodically admits his personal bias, and recommends deeper reading. The value of Dubin's own experience is that readers can compare and contrast it to the anecdotes of other writers, forming whatever opinion will be helpful to you. That said, I feel the book should further explore its source theories and the author's own conclusions. As short as the book is, plenty of room lies for growth.

The most helpful idea off the bat is the sort of thing building off my own science reading. I have long empowered my obstacles. Something as simple as navigating to a new house or business continues to fill me with anxiety, even if less than I used to feel when I was learning to drive. Dubin has even beat me to publishing books despite being the same age, because I've attached too much clutter in my head to the challenge. Do not give unnecessary power to your problems--so simple, and yet so easy to miss without an outsider to point it out for me.

I only have one big problem with this book as therapy. I'm fascinated by blendings of rational and irrational thought. Our minds veer from science to magic to lunacy and back without missing a beat. Keeping in mind that I reviewed a pre-publication proof, this is the problem with "Anxiety and Spirituality".

I agree some people think and fear and fret until the idea of Death hems them inside. So I'm pleased the actual spiritualism and philosophy tries to open folks up while keeping them on planet Earth. Such as the examples of Victor Frankl and Kierkegaard, or lessons from the Koran and Buddhism. Such psychological tools do not necessarily put the patient into a collision course with science.

My concern lies with the feel-good, New Age pseudoscience from the 1970s and early `80s.Including Near Death Experiences by Raymond Moody and Elizabeth Ross, or Rupert Sheldake's version of morphogenetic fields. Dubin does not inform his readers that these are fringe concepts, but reframes them as appealing to the independent spirit of an Aspie. He also plays loose with Chaos Theory and Quantum Mechanics, assigning soul or God-like traits to them in an attempt to illustrate that the patient need not fear the death of identity.

But in doing so, the author commits the age-old sin of imposing fancy upon the mundane. And a grave sin indeed; as the target audience suffers a syndrome, often co-morbid with various personality disorders, feeding delusions might only cause more harm.Chaos theory, for example, does not say that the flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil will cause a tornado in Texas, but almost the opposite--that a butterfly is dampened and dispersed by its environment so that we can't predict any long term, long-distance effects. This very uncertainty is part of what is so upsetting to many people, not just Aspies, so imagine what will happen emotionally if somebody stumbles upon a contrary view.

Of course, psychologists and psychiatrists are as human as their patients, with conclusions as likely to slide from medicine to voodoo. As an antidote, I recommend Occum's Razor: "Do not multiply entities unnecessarily." A nice dovetail to Dubin's own advice, do not give power to ideas that have not earned it.

Dubin's power isn't to shrill for religion or pseudoscience--it is to empower the patient. And for that I give him all credit. Writing books will not cure his syndrome, so much as manage it while earning an income and educating society. "Asperger's Syndrome and Anxiety" cannot be considered a comprehensive text, but it is an accessible introduction to some popular therapies and personal advice, and on that level it has promise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable information, personal, easy to read.
This book, in my opinion, was extensively researched and carefully crafted. The author offers a lot of practical advice and hope without romanticising.I found it very helpful in both understanding Aspergers and coping with it.Thanks, Mr. Dubin, we ARE capable of empathy.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good resource for Asperger's Syndrome folks
My son has Asperger's and some books we have found are useful and some are duds. this is a good book, with practical advice for the person with Asperger's and the one who loves them.
My son has had panic attacks from time to time and with Asperger's people treat you differant. You know you are differant.. and see and hear things in another way than others do.
Good resource, wise council.. worth buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars worth reading -- starts great, falls apart at the end
This book is definately worth reading by people with Aspergers and those close to them. The first part is very insightful. It offers lots of info on how Aspies think and view things, and how these common viewpoints can lead to anxiety. The author, who has Aspergers, discusses how Aspies may try to overcompensate for the "deficiencies" of Aspergers and how the way that this is done can lead to anxiety. The trauma of growing up with Aspergers, and the effects this has on peoples' psyche is covered at length. Also discussed, with great insight, is:hypersensitivity, perfectionism, difficulty transistioning, monotropism, problems with nonverbal cues, auditory processing difficulties, and depression. This are not discussed clinically, thought there is much scientific evidence mentioned, but are discussed as they actually feel to the person experiencing them.Again, great insights into thought processes that lead to or further these issues. The second half of the book covers what to do about these issues. Here I found the book to be lacking. When the book ventured into "new age" things like morphogenic fields in its chapter on spirituality, it lost my respect.Still, the first half of the book has insights worth reading. ... Product Description
Asperger Syndrome has become an increasingly common disorder. One in 300 individuals may have AS—exhibiting characteristics such as average to high intelligence, obsessive behavior, intense special interests, and difficulty dealing with everyday social situations—and it is now more prevalent than childhood cancer and Down’s syndrome.

As the mother of a boy diagnosed with AS in 1994, Barbara Kirby found scant resources and support. She developed the internationally renowned OASIS (Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support) Web site in 1995 to help other parents find the information they need. She teamed up with Patricia Romanowski Bashe, now co-owner of OASIS and herself the mother of a son with AS, to write The OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome, which has become the standout authority in the field and a must-have for this growing audience.

Now Bashe and Kirby have crafted a fully revised edition of this comprehensive resource for parents, teachers, therapists, and anyone who knows or works with someone with AS. In addition to discussing what AS looks like and how parents can guide their unique child through the social, emotional, and intellectual challenges of growing up, this edition includes new developments made in AS research over the past four years, new thinking on diagnosis and evaluation, the latest approaches to medication and social skills development, and tips on navigating the maze of interventions, therapies, and special education. The authors know firsthand the joys and frustrations of raising children with AS, and they share their own experiences as well as those of dozens of parents facing the same issues.

Filled with practical information and emotional support, this is the most complete and authoritative guide available. Whether your child has been diagnosed or troubling symptoms are just becoming apparent, this book will point you in the right direction as you face the particular challenges of loving and raising a child with Asperger Syndrome. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift for Generations to Come..
This is, by far, the best book out on Asperger Syndrome. The authors have managed to untangle the confusing picture of Asperger Syndrome in a way that everybody can understand. The Oasis Guide to Asperger Syndrome will give parents and their children hope and the feeling they are not alone. It will give teachers, therapists, pyschologists, doctors, etc. the compassion and information they need to empower children and adults alike. You can tell, right away, that this book was written by parents with real-life experience, because it has heart and soul and doesn't put professionals on a pedestal.Unlike other books on the subject, it combines the experience of parenthood with solid research, making it an irresistable read.Like the older siblings in a family who guide their younger brothers and sisters through turbulant times, Barbara Kirby and Patricia Romanowski Bashe turned their struggles and triumphs into a step-by-step guide that will pave the way for other parents to nurture the potential in their children.Truly a gift for generations to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Definitive Guide That's an Excellent Home or School Resource
An excellent, comprehensive guide to help parents understand their child--that their special needs and behavior is not on purpose--or that how everyone processes stimuli and social situations isn't the same for everyone. This book has specific recommendations and tips for common situations at home and at school.

I think this book should be required reading in teacher training (we're seeing so many more aspies, but they're still a mystery to many educators), as well as a resource in schools for special ed and mainstream ed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely important, now more than ever
The DSM is in the process of being updated.Among the proposed revisions is a movement towards the idea of an Autism Spectrum, and a blurring of the lines among previously distinct diagnoses within the category. This has caused, as might be expected, some serious discussion on the validity of sub-types and to just what degree the diagnoses within the categories are justified. The OASIS Guide provides very important information for a fully-informed approach to that discussion. It provides crucial information regarding Asperger's Syndrome and the wide range of abilities and difficulties often seen with the diagnosis. Most importantly, it shows us that even with Asperger's itself, there is a spectrum.Rather than seeking a "global" diagnosis and description of global functioning levels within a given individual, it helps us to understand that we must approach each individual and examine their particular abilities and difficulites.Solidly researched and written, this is the book that I first recommend when discussing Asperger's Syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for Parents and Teachers of Children with AS
We've suspected Asperger's for my 10 year old son for close to a year now and we are finally close to receiving our diagnosis.Of course I had questions.I gleaned a bit here and there, but this book tops them all.I can't praise it highly enough.Comprehensive is the best way to describe this book.I kid you not - this book answered ALL of the questions I had about Asperger's and my son.No parent of an Asperger's child should be without this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oasis Guide to Asperger Syndrome...A MUST READ
The OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome is a MUST READ for anyone who knows an individual with a diagosis of AS. This book is a very well written book that combines both personal information from the authors with professional information. The information is helpful and easy to read. It's not filled with professional jargon or anything else that would make the content difficult to understand.

As a related service provider, I can think of several families who will want to borrow my book. I'm quite sure that they will find much helpful information in it.

While there are many "professional" books on the subject of Asperger Syndrome, it is my opinion that this particular book is one of the top published for families. At the same time, I do think that professional such as teachers, physicians, paraeducators, and the like will also benefit from reading it.

I highly recommend the purchase of this book for either your personal or professional library. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Positive Characteristics of AS
As a grown man with Aspergers, this book while hitting the nail on the head in a lot of aspects, noting the difficulty with social situations and making friends, the preference for structure and routine, the difficulty understanding idioms/jokes, unusual interests, and bedtime rituals. However, I believe this book, though not intended to be, is a bit negative in tone. Never does it mention the positive aspects of AS, including high intelligence and deep passion for one or two things (and these people typically go on to do great things). I think this book should be tweaked to provide a more balanced view of AS, including positive aspects, so those with AS don't feel so bad about themselves when reading this book (or it is being read to them).

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for youth
I would recommend this book to read with a youth that suffers from aspergers or has a sibling or friend with aspergers

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps People to "Get it"
This is the first book on my "So You'd Like to..." list, which is book suggestions for parents seeking to introduce their child to his or her own Autism/Asperger Syndrome. Although the publisher says ages 9-12, I'd recommend this book for younger children, 6-8, possibly even including kids younger than that. That said, I did however buy this for my own mother back when my son was originally diagnosed at age 5, and she, in turn, bought several copies for the more-resistant relatives who needed a bit of education (the "He's just being BAD on purpose to get attention"-types).

Easy-to-read, almost like a colouring book, and covers many aspects of the Autistic Spectrum in simple language and pictures. Some people feel it covers too much of thenegative aspects, but I feel these are the things that people need to understand and accept the most.

At the time of my son's initial diagnosis, I also bought several copies for the preschool, which the staff found useful for themselves and for teaching moments with other kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for discussion purposes
My 8 year old daughter was just recently diagnosed with AS and so I began a search for a variety of books to read myself and read along with my daughter.I chose this one, hoping it would give her something she could relate to.Reading along with her, it served to be a great tool for discussion. In addition, I plan on bringing it with me to the school as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point
This book is a good place to start. It has very remedial information on how Asperger's Syndrome (AS) appears to others. In this way it can be informative to those who don't have AS (why is he doing that?) as well as to those who have AS (how am I different?).The book is very short and only seeks to explain the perceptions and actions of a person with AS.It does a very good job of not condemning the behavior, merely pointing out that it is sometimes outside of the norm. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Childhood Disorder Grows Up

Although there has been an increase in the research and clinical studies related to children with Asperger syndrome, it is only recently that psychologists have begun to appreciate the complex challenges faced by adults who were not identified in childhood. Rather than outgrowing their symptoms, children with Asperger syndrome have now become adults with Asperger syndrome and an underserved population. Cognitive-Behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be of value in addressing the deficits and distortions in thinking as well as many of the coexisting problems (depression and anxiety) experienced by individuals with autism spectrum conditions such as Asperger syndrome. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult Asperger Syndrome provides a comprehensive framework for conceptualizing AS in adults and formulating treatment plans using CBT evidence-based interventions. Chapters contain important details on conducting a comprehensive assessment, formulating a diagnosis, and providing treatment. Gaus has done a masterful job of describing a conceptual model of cognitive dysfunction in AS and how evidence-based CBT intervention for typical adults can be applied to individuals with AS. The author includes clinical case examples from her practice to illustrate how Asperger syndrome is manifested in adults. The text also includes a list of therapy resources and reproducible forms for professional use. Overall, the book provides a wealth of information and practical interventions that will be a welcome addition to therapists' toolkits. While intended primarily for psychotherapists and clinicians, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult Asperger Syndrome will also be an essential reference for practitioners in many other disciplines who have an interest in understanding how to treat adults with this autism spectrum condition.

A Best Practice Guide to Assessment and Intervention for Autism and Asperger Syndrome in Schools

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Adult Asperger Syndrome to Date
To my knowledge, this book is the first professional resource available to adult Aspies, their families as well as to professionals that are providing much-needed services to them. Together with added understanding and validation of personal experience, I found this book very helpful. I have read many books on Asperger Syndrome and the focus of the literature seems to be largely on childhood and adolescence. Books that do focus on adults tend to be largely autobiographical in style. I hope that Ms. Gaus, and others with similar expertise, will follow through with many more similar, and much-needed, resources in the near future. I will certainly be looking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have read a lot of books on the autism spectrum. This does a nice job of explaining asperger syndrome and high functioning autism and differentiating between the challenges of autism and mental health issues that may develop and how to deal with both. Good use of examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attention All Aspies and Therapists
This thorough treatise ought to be required reading for psychotherapists lest those afflicted with the Adult Asperger Syndrome remain undiagnosed and untreated. The chapters are consecutively arranged in a logically ordered fashion:defining Asperger Syndome(AS) in Adulthood;describing the conceptual model of this disorder;dissecting the core problems and offering a treatment plan for the basic cognitive dysfunction as well as for the many co-morbidities associated with AS. One is introduced to the concept of cognitive-behavior therapy and the application of these constructs to AS.
Each chapter's salient points are neatly and concisely summarized in a paragraph of two or three sentences. The volume is replete with in-depth
case studies dealing with the author's assessment and her definitive therapeutic approach to the individual with AS. Her structured yet commonsense,non-judgemental,compassionate sessions give more than new hope to those plagued by AS,leading them to fuller and more constructive lives.
This book deserves recognition and praise by psychotherapists as well as the AS community.

Product Description

Thomas Edison. Albert Einstein. Half of NASA. These are all extremely intelligent, successful adults who made great contributions to society and who are also suspected of having the developmental disorder called Asperger Syndrome. This relatively new diagnosis is being increasingly applied to both children and adults-in fact, it is now seen as running in familes. There are a lot of books on how to successfully raise children with AS, but until now, adults were left to figure it out on their own.

Dr. Juanita Lovett specializes in treating adults with AS and working with their families. In this book she shows those adults and their loved ones how to maximize the benefits of AS (including intense concentration, above-average intelligence, and high creativity) while minimizing the drawbacks (including lack of social skill, inability to connect emotionally with others, and propensity toward rage).

This important new book will help thousands of adults with AS learn to live happier, more fulfilling lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start for learning about Adult Asperger's for spouse NT
I understand that it is (upsetting, offensive, negative, derogatory, biased, etc) potentially for an Adult with Aspergers to read this book.No one likes a "label".But, us "NT"s were as well. This book is helpful in 2 ways:
1-for anyone who is just learning about Aspergers in Adults and needs somewhere to start to understand some aspects of the person you want to get along with better. It helped me talk to my husband in better ways that are more his language and perspective.2-to understand some of the ways adults with AS see emotions alittle differently, how to handle emergency responses, politeness/manners/social appropriate situations, feelings and conversations that matter. My husband is very smart and a great listener...I compliment him on that now.If I don't like how he does something that "upsets" me, I tell him what I would like him to do politely, simply and clearly. And it showed me how his perception of a conversation or situation is just as valid and I now ask him what he thinks. We combine our thoughts now.The book also pointed out a family trait and his mother was brilliant, but had similiar traits.Hey, if Bill Gates, Kenau Reeves and Dan Akroyd say they have Aspergers...doesn't that tell us it's just another way to view/deal with the world and people?A quick read in an hour to get the gist for some background - helpful!

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall - very good
The author has captured the key issues affecting adults affected by Asperger's Syndrome (AS), both directly and indirectly. The author also spends a significant amount of time discussing the impact someone with AS can have on Neuro-Typical relationships in different settings, making this book equally useful for partners, colleagues etc.

This book covers a broad gamut of topics and is a very complete in this sense. However, with the broad range of subjects covered, some are not given the depth I was hoping for. This aside though, for any adult who has been recently diagnosed with AS, or has a family member or colleague diagnosed with AS, this is a great book. For those with a good understanding of the condition and are looking for more detailed information, alternate titles might be a better option.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I thought this was an excellent resource, and really helped me understand some of the things that I go through in my relationships. It gave thorough and positive examples. Unlike other books I have read relating to this topic, I feel like this one was much more helpful in the sense that it didn't constantly treat AS like a disease, as well as it gave valid examples, and encouragement. I read this without feeling 'broken' through the entire text.

I would recommend this to anyone that's struggling with some of the relationship aspect things that can be a struggle for someone with AS, who is really hoping to find a sustainable, happy, and healthy relationship.

3-0 out of 5 stars Negative view of Asperger Syndrome
I think the title of this book is rather deceitful; it should be called "A Hundred Ways through which Adults with Asperger syndrome can Ruin your Life: Emphasizing the Drawbacks, Forget the Benefits, there are none." Throughout the book, Dr. Juanita Lovett recounts some cases she has encountered as a clinical psychologist, most of them related to couple and marital problems involving one spouse with AS. I don't doubt her capability and expertise as a psychologist but, in the end, the reader is left with a very negative impression of people with AS. No solutions are offered to the person with AS, only a long series of disheartening problems and failures people around Aspies are going to face. Also, the book is not addressed to people with AS. Only rarely are they referred to in the first person; most of the time the third person is used, so the potential readers are considered as NTs.

On the other hand, this book could still be useful to AS adults in the sense that they may start asking themselves if they share any of the rude, selfish and annoying behaviors depicted... and then look for answers in another place. The negative approach to Asperger syndrome presented here could be ultimately a productive counterbalance to more positive perspectives offered in many books about this subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers the basics pretty well
We ordered this book after my husband was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. My husband isn't exactly the most self-attuned guy, and so this book was really helpful for me because it gave me an opportunity to "get inside" my husband's head.It had lots of coping suggestions, some of which fit our situation, and some of which don't.It does a good job of pointing out that living on the Spectrum truly looks different from person to person, and that sweeping generalizations (and sometimes mini generalizations) are usually not super helpful.I've found since my husband's diagnosis that the vast majority of people we run into (including doctors, by the way) really have no clue what Asperger's is, and they have many strongly held notions which are less than helpful. This book armed us with some good information that kept us from being thrown about by well meaning people. The best advice the book has is to get yourself some awesome, qualified professional help. For us, my husband's diagnosis signaled that both of us would have to come to a better understanding and acceptance of ourselves as well as each other in order to keep our marriage vibrant and alive. This book was a good starting place.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok but not anything new
This was just OK. I have Asperger's and the author seemed to just write about his problems in life. Nothing really new or helpful. I would not waste the money

Asperger's From the Inside Out: A Supportive and Practical Guide for Anyone with Asperger's Syndrome was valuable to me to learn not only the factual information for those, like my brother, on the asperger spectrum, but to "hear" it told by a successful adult. Easy to follow and promotes understanding of this neurological challenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unrivaled
I own shelves of books on Asperger Syndrome and this one is by far the best. I've owned it for years and return to it often when difficult situations arise. It's thorough, comprehensive and helpful beyond measure. It should be noted that its primary focus is newly diagnosed younger to tween children, however the authors have numerous other books available that are comparably good.

5-0 out of 5 stars AS & HFA
I have not quite finished this book however, already it is an excellent resource.I have read probably 20 books on ASD and this is one of the better ones if your loved one is Asperger or high functioning autistic. The books goes into great detail of all of the evidence surrounding Austism from vaccinations, to the genetic link. Most importantly it offers a very impartial view.It presents all of the facts but doesn't try and sway you in any particular direction. There are some great examples of people living with these disorders and how they have turned their weaknesses into strengths and lead fulfilling lives. At this stage of my involvement with this disorder, this was exactly what I wanted to learn about on the next step of my journey.Reassurance that life will more than likely be ok for my child, the book helps you to think about things a little differently and look for the positives in what might seem like debilitating issues at the time.A very worthwhile book on anyone's shelf because it is written by knowledgeable professionals who have struck a great balance between not "dumbing the info down too much" whilst also remembering that most of us don't have PhDs.I really love the angle that this book has taken.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT book for parents of ASD/HFA children
My son was recently dx with PDD-NOS but they did not rule out ASD because of a few factors....i believe after all my reading on the subject he is actually,HFA. But whatever, this book will show you there is little difference in the treatment between the two and that the prognosis is awesome!!!! This book is easy to read and put in language that is easy to understand. I cannot say enough about how this book put into perspective the things that i was dealing with in my life and the suggestions on what to do at home and in school to make things better. Definately a book to read if you have just begun this journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction Book for Parents and Family Members
We got this book from the library when our son was first diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. Although other books Iborrowed had more theory or specific interventions, mostly related to school, this was a great book to help me understand and answer questions about this new diagnosis. Needless to say, we ended up buying it. I also had my parents, in-laws and day care giver read it.They all found it accessible and useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential tool to help kids on the spectrum cope with the rigors of school
This is an incredible book, full of practical suggestions designed to reduce the angst and strife of school life for children on the Autism spectrum. It also has an assortment of ready-to-use forms/templates that we were able to put to immediate use to allay some of our child's fears--changes in routine, for instance--in school. It's been written in an easy, lucid style, and is an absolute page-turner. It is so insightful that certain passages are bound to resonate with the reader's own personal case: I know that in our own case, we came across several that caused us to break out in gooseflesh.

If you have a child on the spectrum, who has issues in school, and you can only afford one book, make it this one. You can find Attwood's bible, Kranowitz's gospel (&c.) at the local library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gift to school
Even though our school district is on top of things, I got this as a gift for the base teacher or those needing an introduction to the disorder. It will only benefit my child if his teachers are educated on how he learns and the reasons for his behavior.

Product Description
Although having Asperger Syndrome (AS) can make romantic relations difficult, having a fulfilling relationship with an Asperger man is certainly not impossible. A woman in love with a man with AS may interpret his difficulties with communication and socialization as a lack of interest in the relationship. He may vacillate between being gentle and caring to seeming cold and distant. She may find his behaviour hard to understand, resulting in feelings of loneliness, isolation, and confusion. This book shows how to overcome these difficulties and maintain a loving relationship with an AS partner. From an unwillingness to show affection in public or even sleep in the same bed to problems holding down a job, this book looks at 22 common traits that women may discover when they are dating, living with or married to a man with Asperger's Syndrome. Rudy Simone explores the complications of Asperger's relationships with honesty and understanding, drawing on research and personal experience to inform and advise women with AS partners. She offers helpful tips for improving the relationship and finding fulfilment both individually and as a couple. This book will help women to understand the male Asperger's mind and, equally, it can help men with AS to see things from their partner's perspective. It will also be of interest to counsellors working with couples where one partner has Asperger's Syndrome. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Autism Spectrum Disorders are unique.
There are features of Asperger Syndrom that may fit in some of her 22 things, but they do not describe all of us.Her experience is not broad enough to speak with generalized authority.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good brief overview
This is a good little book which gives an accurate but brief overview of the most common issues that arise in a relationship with a man who has Asperger Syndrome. I think it would be a very good choice of book to read if you have a friend or loved one who is in a relationship with an Aspie and you want to know more and understand their situation. But if you are actually in a relationship with an Aspie, you will need more than just this book, and I recommend highly the Kathy Marshack book and also "Alone Together" by Katrin Bentley. Still, it is a useful addition and in particular, has a nice positive comment at the end of each chapter, re how to see the positive side of each difficult trait/issue.I believe there is a lot you can learn and grow from in a relationship with an Aspie, so it is nice to see these positive comments, encouraging an empowered attitude rather than sinking into despair.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth it.
I have a boyfriend with aspergers. And this book gave me straight out what to expect and how to deal with it. I think this was worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Want to know when the Man with Asperger's companion book will be out?
This is a great book for women who are able and willing to 'give their all' to their guy.Personally, I am a woman married 15 years to a man JUST diagnosised...though we knew something was 'up'.I am also a brain injury survivor, with the memory of burned toast.
It seems to me, that a book that would (review) what the Asperger's person needs to work on (more) would be good.It bothers me that the book basically states 'this just is the way it is'.I have been working hard on my own stuff in the five years since my injury--if I hadn't put something in place, I would still be in the 'drool pool' and unable to speak/write or walk.
I like the book---he actually READ it.That was one thing. But it seems to be more a road map for ME than for HIM--guess the title is true to form... but still...

1-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful if you need a guidebook
There really is a dearth of literature to provide helpful guidance to the woman who has discovered her husband has Asperger's Syndrome. So I belive that publishers are rushing texts into print to capitalize on this shortage. There is clearly a need and a market for self-help literature, in part because there is so little help from a couples therapy approach. This book should have found a life as a well edited magazine article. But the content is too thin to have merited life as a book with a cost over the approximate cost of a Psychology Today issue. The 22 observations have varying applications - some to single women and some to married women.

Just read the index for free and get the substance of the book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so positive.
I read this, and thought about my partner reading it, and it concerned me. It was a glimpse of being with someone with AS. However, it highlighted much of the negative aspects, and spoke about the relationships as if there weren't sustainable. I don't agree with that. And thought that it was speaking to AS more like a broken diseased part of a person that a partner may never be able to handle. Or they may never be fulfilled by their AS partner. I consider AS a blessing and a curse, just like any great personality strength, and do not believe that love and relationships are beyond the realm of someone with AS grasping. That's how this book made me feel for much of it. It seemed more like a commiseration of negative thoughts and feelings, more than a 'how to thrive and get what's best in these different yet sustainable and wonderful relationships'

4-0 out of 5 stars A Basic Description of the Subject
For someone with no knowledge of Asperger Syndrome, this is a good basic description of the disease and its affects on a spouse.Because going to a counselor with an Asperger's Spouse is difficult (because of denial), it would be better if a section on very specific communication techniques was included.A good book to give to your marriage counselor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opener!
I am a 54 year old man who has always known I was different in so many ways than other people. I married and had children triplet and they were so like me. My wife struggled to raise them and I knew inside I was just like them. They were dx with Asbergers but I just was in pure denial, IM JUST DIFFRENT. My wife of 23 years was ready to divorce me as she could not live with the lack of communication in our marriage. She bought this and other books and gave it to me, it took 3 days for me to pick it up but I knew if I didn't I could loose my wife. I am SO GLAD I DID! this book answered so many questions I had about myself since I was a child. This is a great EYE OPENER FOR THOSE OF US WITH AS IN DENIAL.Will also help spouses or family members undertand ASPBERGERS. There is alot of information in this book that describes the traits of a person with ASPBERGER'S SYNDROME. Book does a great job in discribing all the traits we are all different and therefore you will see yourself in some and not in others. A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WITH ASPERGERS OR WHO WANTS A FULL VIEW OF WHAT TO LOOK FOR.

5-0 out of 5 stars life support for a crazied wife
This book is my life support. I was being driven to depression and, probable separation, from my husband of 29 years. My life was so lonely; I thought no one could feel as I did. Finally figured out my spouse has AS, then ordered this book. It has a very positive tone which has given me great hope for my marriage. The author explains why marriage counseling is such a disaster, why the AS parent is disconnected during the teenage years, and, basically, helped me understand the good and the bad of my spouse. Next she gives suggestions on how to talk and respond to your spouse. I can't believe the difference! My spouse is a kind, gentle man who loves me in his own way. I have learned it is not a matter of 'would' not, it is a matter of 'can' not. This is a hopeful book for any couple (though it is really geared for male AS) who wants to become happier in their marriage.

5-0 out of 5 stars A strong and highly recommended pick
Asperger's is a unique condition in that it's not necessarily an impairment. "Students with Asperger Syndrome: A Guide for College Personnel" discusses Asperger syndrome and how college-level educators and administrators should deal with students affected with the condition and how these students are different from the others. Defining Asperger's and how it will affect the many different avenues of campus life, "Students with Asperger Syndrome" is a strong and highly recommended pick for these teachers who may not be familiar with Asperger's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for all who work with, or love, a college student with Asperger's
I began reading books on Asperger's Syndrome 9 years ago, when my son was diagnosed with the condition. The books on the subject were few then, but now are many.As college now looms on the horizon for my son, I've recently read several books on how to help a student with AS succeed in college. This is, bar none, THE best book on that subject that I have read.It is written by three credentialed and experienced educators:(1) the director of disability services for Boston University (she has a Ph.D.); (2) the director of student services at the University of Connecticut School of Law (she has an Ed.D.); and (3) a dean who is also the director of the disability resource center for Northeastern University (she has an M.Ed.).My first clue that this would be a practical yet scientifically accurate book was that the foreward was written by Fred Volkmar, M.D., and Ami Klin, Ph.D., both of Yale Child Study Center.Drs. Volkmar and Klin are two world-renowned experts on Asperger's Syndrome and both work in a university setting. If they vouch for you, you are golden!

The book is stunningly accurate in its portrayal of the strengths and the everyday challenges of college students with Asperger's.The authors clearly have all worked closely with many individuals with Asperger's Syndrome. They recognize that, while the expression of AS is different for each person, there are common areas of difficulty with which students will likely need support.Although they write primarily for those who work in college disability services offices and therefore take that perspective, the authors also empathize with the student and his/her parents. For example, while they stress the critical need for college students with AS to separate from their parents and become independent, the authors also respectfully acknowledge that parents of students with AS who have been stereotypical "helicopter parents" or "commando parents" have often been that way because they have had to advocate vigorously over the years to ensure that their children were provided the services and accommodations they needed and to which they were entitled under the law.

The book covers a broad range of big and small issues: life in the classroom; student self-advocacy with professors; dorm life (single room? roommates?); sleep difficulties common to those with AS; sensory issues; personal hygiene; student safety; doing laundry; grocery shopping; medication issues; coordinating with health care professionals and others; legal restrictions on the types of information colleges may share with parents; and more.

You will find yourself reading with highlighter in hand because the book contains such sage advice. We parents of children with AS probably started our "AS home library" with Dr. Tony Attwood's book on Asperger's.As our child now heads off to college, this book is a worthy one to place on the bookshelf next to his book. ...
