Product Description
It isn't easy being eight years old and having an older brother who other children often misunderstand. They don't realize that when he doesn't laugh at their jokes it's because he doesn't understand them. They don't know that when he doesn't speak to them or look at them it's because he doesn't know what to say or how to make eye contact. They don't realize that he behaves this way because he has something called Asperger's Syndrome. Sam knows that his brother Eric is different from him because his brain works differently. So, when the other children bully Eric, it makes Sam feel protective of him. But sometimes, when Eric behaves oddly, Sam feels embarrassed too. Sometimes, when Eric gets lots of attention, it makes Sam feel resentful - then, when he considers that Eric needs a lot of help and attention, it makes Sam feel guilty for feeling resentful. There are so many different feelings Sam experiences! "Brotherly Feelings" explores the emotions that siblings of children with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) commonly experience. With illustrations throughout, this book will help siblings to understand that their emotional responses - whatever they are - are natural and OK.It is the ideal book for parents and professionals to use with siblings to discuss their emotional experiences, and will also help children with AS to form an understanding of the feelings of other family members. ... Excellent book. Our family related to this well.My 10 yr old son loved it and realized he wasn't alone in his "adventure" with his 16 yr old brother w/ AS. Very easy reading. He read it all in the first day. Wonderful!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT Book!!!!
I recently purchased this book because I have Asperger's.I found the book to be very insightful and well written.Even though I do not have any brothers or sisters, it was nice to realize that I am not the only one who has these problems. My mother also enjoyed reading the book and too could identify with the characters in the book. For people who have Aspergers or who are growing up with a brother/sister with Aspergers I strongly recommend this book! For people in the medical field this book is ideal. It will give you a better insight on how siblings relate to one another when one or the other has Aspergers. This is a great book and I hope that its writers will consider publishing more books on this subjest. Please, BUY THIS BOOK! ... Product Description
Following on from the highly successful book Autism: The Facts, this new volume by Simon Baron-Cohen summarizes the current understanding of the autistic spectrum, from Asperger syndrome to autism. Written first and foremost as a guide for parents, but what is also certain to become required reading for interested professionals, the book covers what we have learnt to date about the brain, genetics, and interventions for autism spectrum disorders. The book also provides an overview of diagnosis of these conditions, their biological and physiological causes, and the various treatments and educational techniques available. In the book Professor Baron-Cohen also presents a new unified psychological theory of the autistic spectrum. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Autism - Just the Facts
This compact (7.7 x 5 x 0.4 inches), yet highly accessible and informative text is a title from the "The Facts" series published by Oxford University press. A leading authority in the field of autism, Professor Baron-Cohen provides us with an comprehensive and readable summary of the current state of the research and science of autism spectrum disorders. Each chapter begins by listing key points of the relevant discussion and content. The first chapter introduces the reader to classic autism (autistic disorder) and Asperger syndrome by describing a child with each of the diagnoses. Subsequent chapters include a discussion of history and prevalence, assessment, neurobiological factors, major psychological theories, and intervention, education, and treatment. Autism and Asperger Syndrome (The Facts) is a valuable resource for both professionals and those touched by autism related conditions. It is an excellent companion to other research-based texts in the field and is highly recommended to experienced professionals, as well as those new to the field.

A Best Practice Guide to Assessment and Intervention for Autism and Asperger Syndrome

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must To Widen Your Knowledge on Autism/Asperger Syndrome
This autism/Asperger Syndrome(a/AS) includes a variety of things which is quite helpful to know the details of a/AS. Although the book doesn't have many pages, it sure provides us with many facts based on histories, neurodevelopments, diagnosis, Theory of Mind(ToM), and of course, the difference and similarities between classic autism(CA) and Asperger's.

The author indicated in the 1st chapter that those with CA have obvious speech delay and lower IQ's, which looks apparent to the neurotypicals(NT's),while those with AS don't have speech delay, but do have average or even higher IQ's than NT's. In this way those with AS seem normal because they talk as if they did almost the same as NT's. However, the trouble is people with AS have a lot of difficulties to catch social words. One of the problem is that both of them need ToM, which means the ability to understand or predict other people's feelings by non-verbal signals as well as words. Another thing I think perplexes NT's is lack of understanding figurative meanings and pragmatics. For example, most AS people may get confused if others use idioms like "Stop beating around the bush!" I suppose idioms and figurative expressions exist because most of them originated from social or historical backgrounds. I would say AS people miss this point and that's why they can't interact with other people.

I can see the similarities, too; both with CA and AS tend to stick to repetitions or the same, but they get agitated when things change out of the blue. For instance, I love listening to the same songs a whole bunch of times and it never bores me at all. On the other hand, some of my friends label this eccentric. They may want to say, "Don't you wanna try something different?", that's why. And weak central coherence is one of the things that bothers both with a/AS.They pay very close attention to tiny, tiny details and can't see the whole point. When I was in vocational school where I dealt with electricity, I was slower at getting things done than most people. I was so distressed that I tried to catch up with them, forgetting the purpose of learning. "I'm never gonna drop out" - That was all I had in mind. In short, I must have forgotten accuracy outweighed faster achievement. In retrospect, I couldn't see the forest for the trees, which showed explicitly I needed central coherence and still I do. I might have noticed this if I had been diagnosed with AS then.

I was amazed at The Extreme Male Brain Theory in Chapter 5. According to the author, a/AS people have extreme masculine brain function, and I guess it makes sense. Most experts say there are more males with a/AS than females, and the author hit the right nail on the head. This reminded me of Allan and Barbara Peace's Bestseller, "Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps". They said men show fewer facial expressions than women. In this respect, people with masculine brain functioning may not be good at showing or understanding emotions well enough. Particularly, a/AS people often find it very hard to catch or predict what other people may think or feel. Of course, male NT's literally have male brain functioning systems and that's no problem. The problem is that a/AS people have extreme male brains, which can cause lack of ToM.

Anyway, I find this book useful because I'm sure it helps us get the depth of autism/Asperger's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of Autism but needs a bit of work
Overall, Autism and Asperger Syndrome provides a good overview of the characteristics, symptoms, treatments, and intervention strategies for those suffering from ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders). The book is an easy read and explains things in a clear and succinct manner which will certainly provide many with an excellent starting point when delving into the topic.

Unfortunately, there are several matters which also distract from the author's intent and which should have been dealt with prior to publication. The most obvious problem is that there are numerous editing errors throughout the book. Granted, the book uses British English, which should not present problems for most, the language remains stilted and contains an overabundance of archaic terms. The lack of a reference section is also very disturbing and, in at least one case, Wikipedia is considered as an appropriate source by the author! Under no circumstance should Wikipedia ever be used as a reference in a book that purports to present "the facts" on any topic.

The author's poor choice (and lack) of sources isn't the only problem as there are many other factual errors present. For example, page 64 states, "the musical note E is always five tones above the musical note A." (Which, as any musician will know, is incorrect.) Another example would include Baron-Cohen's statement on page 98 that wrongly states, "Another subgroup of people with autism and Asperger Syndrome have the opposite profile [of those with Attention Deficit Disorder] an excellent ability to concentrate on one topic for extended periods." As anyone who is familiar with ADD knows, the ability to hyperfocus on one topic for an extended period of time is one of the hallmark signs of ADD (especially Inattentive and Over-focused forms of ADD)!

Baron-Cohen's book does a fairly good job of providing an overview of ASD that, with a bit of editing, has the potential to be a far more useful book it is in its present form. ... Read more

Product Description
The Ziggurat Model is a valuable resource for public school professionals who must remain in compliance with federal and state guidelines. Specifically, recent trends in special education law emphasize the use of scientifically based research approaches along with a focus on Response to Intervention (RTI). Additionally, there is a strong push for incorporating positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) based on a functional behavioral assessment. The Ziggurat Model is consistent with these practices. The Ziggurat Model is unique. While it is easy to find volumes of information describing specific interventions, it is difficult to find information on how to develop an intervention plan. This book presents a process and framework for designing comprehensive interventions for individuals of all ages with autism spectrum disorders. The Ziggurat Model was designed to simplify a complex process. Parents and professionals will find the framework of the Ziggurat Model to be a guide in developing more thorough and effective interventions. The book includes assessment tools, case scenarios, and many interventions that were developed with their needs in mind. The Ziggurat Model foreword is written by Dr. Gary Mesibov, Director of Division TEACCH. ... Read more

Just got into this book, it is an easy read, great information and useable information

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
I am extremely disappointed. The checklists reflect a disrespect for children with autism, before ever getting into the rationale behind any therapies or interventions. The fact that the "case sample" contains a teacher's personal judgement that, in effect, blames the child for their disability is appalling. To have the conclusion of a hypothetical or actual teacher, i.e., the child is a "sore loser" appear in a sample of what other teachers should note is so far out of line with what is even legal it made my skin crawl. A teacher, an aide, or even a psychologist (and in this case it is apparently acceptable to the authors) is obligated to evaluate the child for adaptaions and accomodations for their disability so they can learn, not pass judgement on the child as having failed by virtue of a character flaw.

I was too disgusted by the materials to even finish reading the program. I have a grandchild with autism. Despite these "characteristics", i.e., hand-flapping, repetitive behaviors, inattention, grimacing, etc appearing in the DSM as the symptoms of autism, it is our experience they are the symptoms of injury and illness. Severe allergies, nutritional deficiencies and severe gut disease were the underlying cause for what the authors term underlying characteristics. Eliminating allergens, treating his damaged gut and supplementing lost nutrition has erased our grandsons "characteristics". Not modifying his behavior to supress the expression of pain, not creating a reward system for accomplishing that suppression being still and quiet. It is unconscionable this program does not even acknowledge thse behaviors are likely caused by their reaction to pain.

It's not a framework that teaches a teacher or parent how to help the child. Its a framework for the teacher or parent to make the child stop communicating that something more is wrong than what is on the surface.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ziggurat Model:A Necessity for Parents, Teachers, Professionals
Brilliant! Finally someone has developed an approach that allows you to design individualized interventions for students with HFA/AS addressing all areas of need. This book provides tools to assess underlying characteristics and move forward to create individualized interventions to address specific behaviors or a general program.I love how the Ziggurat Model focuses on proactive strategies and positive approaches to intervention.Dr. Aspy and Dr. Grossman also incorporate proven strategies from the field of Autism at each level of the Intervention Ziggurat, summarizing research support for the strategies. The beauty of this book is that it provides a way to look at a student's needs and make decisions about designing appropriate interventions.I wish I had had this resource when I was in the classroom.I feel it would have helped me to be a better teacher by being able to design a more appropriate, more comprehensive program for my students with HFA/AS.Thank you, Dr. Aspy and Dr. Grossman, for the time and dedication it has taken to develop this approach and share it with other professionals.I truly believe the Ziggurat Model will make a difference in the lives of all children with HFA/AS whose teachers and parents choose to embrace it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ziggurat Model: An Observant Person's Perspective
I own my own copy of this fabulous, very hands-on approach to understanding what in the world autism and Asperger syndrome even mean.I am a Mom very integrated into a world of other families through relationships with other parents and their children. My main interaction comes from dealing with children through being a childcare provider through my church. Our church ison the larger side--taking care of around 1,000 children a week.We regularly are called on to provide childcare for children who have been recognized as falling into "autistic" and "Asperger's"categories. As someone who wants to provide excellent care for each child who comes into our classrooms, it is becoming more and more necessary to understand what it means to be "autistic" and to have "Asperger's syndrome."Some parents are able to suggest some things that can make their child's stay easier for him/her, but others simply leave their child with no instructions. The way that Ruth Aspy and Barry Grossman have designed their diagnostic and interventive model of understanding and then appropriately interacting with these children is so practical.Just this morning, another mother in our Mom's group at church put a request out on our Mom's website asking for help in understanding what "autistic" means because her sibling had just had a 4-year-old child diagnosed with this disorder, and the family is just dismayed and confused about what it all means. This is a situation I've heard about over and over. The need for a practical understanding of the underlying causes, and appropriate interventions for giving each person a way to have the greatest chance to experience life at its fullest, is what The Ziggurat Model addresses so effectively.Thank you, Ruth and Barry, for providing for those of us who haven't known what we ought, to be able to have the knowledge to care as optimally as we can, for those we want to love, as well as we can. ... Product Description
The story of autism contains many puzzles, but none more tantalizing than the problem of the eccentric individual who appears to be both intellectually gifted and mentally handicapped and who finds it difficult to deal with everyday social interaction and communication. Such individuals are increasingly recognized as suffering from Asperger Syndrome. The argument presented in this book is that they suffer from a form of autism, but that they can compensate for this handicap to a remarkable degree. In this volume the foremost experts in the field discuss the diagnostic criteria of the syndrome, richly illustrated with examples from their clinical practices. Clinical accounts are balanced with personal accounts and some as yet preliminary research data. Asperger's classic paper is translated and annotated. The insights of this pioneer of autism have been unjustly neglected but reflect a very modern awareness of the many forms of autism and the wide range of individual differences in the men and women who suffer from this disorder. Asperger Syndrome individuals with their intellectual and linguistic ability and their desire for social adaptation are extremely vulnerable. ... Read more

I was hesistant about buying a used book but the book I received eas in real good condition. Good as new!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As a reseracher on Autism and Asperger's Disorder, I have found this book to be invaluable. To my knowledge, this book contains the first (if not, only) available English translation of Hans Asperger's 1944 work first outlining the disorder. Frith writes clearly, and his history of Asperger and his career are enjoyable to read. Although the "current" research in the book is dated (1991; the disorder did not become official in DSM until 1994), it is an excellent source of archival material for anyone interested in the history of Asperger's Disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Autism and Asperger Syndrome
This book may not be for those who have a limited medical vocabulary, but it is by far the best book on Autism and Asperger currently in print. I have a deep interest in both as a lay person with a chemistry career background. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in those topics, especially the parents of kids who have been diagnosed (or mis-diagnosed) as autistic. Ask your doctor.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Foundation Book
A series of essays by distinguished psychologists and psychiatrists in this field is as good a way as any to introduce Autism and Aspergers syndrome to the enquiring reader.

Perhaps because it is a compilation, my feeling is that this book doesn't quite 'hang together' as a total work. Many of the case study observations, while interesting and accurate, may yet turn out to be irrelevent! That's because some of the conclusions reached, presented in a very authoritative way, are informed theory - rather than research based results. Because this whole field is a relatively new area of research, perhaps it cannot be any other way?

My one pervading view of this book is that it is an 'essential springboard for future research', rather than a book with 'the answers'. If you are looking for a whole lot of practical advice on how to best deal with Aspergers people, you won't find it here. The updated 2005 version of this book, fully revised by all the contributing authors, might be a cracker. But unfortunately such an update doesn't exist.

As a snapshot of the state of play in bringing together different author's papers on Aspergers with knowledge accumulated 1991, Uta does a commendable job.But in the cold light of 2005, being the best you can be in 1991 doesn't quite hit the mark. This is a good book, a worthwhile read, but not good enough to provide that 'Ahah' insight that distinguishes a good book from a truly excellent one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference Book
This is a reference book explaining just what the title says: Asperger's Syndrome, autism proper, and how the two are related. The book also offers a sample of various alternative medical theories and, in one chapter, details six case samples from real life.If you or someone you know hasAS, this is a good book to read. ... Product Description
Open, honest and upbeat, this book gives personal insight into both the ups and downs of an Asperger relationship. Seeking to challenge the bad press that people with Asperger Syndrome (AS) get as partners, Sarah and Keith tell their story of how they are making it work and also how they got it wrong with disarming frankness and humor.
When Sarah and Keith met in 2003 neither knew much about Asperger Syndrome. Sarah thought Keith was weird and couldn t work out why; and Keith thought Sarah was obsessed with diagnosing him with something-or-other. Difficulties ensued that brought the relationship to an end. Slowly, however, they each built up their knowledge of AS and in the meantime developed a mutual understanding, mutual acceptance and a desire to be together again.
This personal account is supplemented with professional knowledge and anecdotes gained from Sarah s work with adults with AS a career which started as a result of her experiences with Keith. She swears that she didn't take her work home with her! It is inspiring reading for couples in Asperger relationships as well as for counseling professionals. ... Read more

Deffinatly an effective book if you need some help in comming up with a few classroom stratigies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful tool for Teachers/Parents with ASD children
I found this book has useful ideas that are not difficult to implement. It provides lists and suggestions for addressing issues that many arise in the classroom. It is easy to forget that many ASD children need to be directly taught things that the average child would intuit.I think this would be particularly helpful when an ASD child is placed in an inclusion setting so the teacher could prepare for the child's needs. With any child you have to look at his or her unique needs, but this book has some very useful concrete suggestions on how to help an ASD child succeed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpfull teachers resourse
I love this resourse it had a lot of great ideas. My suggestion would be to read it before you give it to you educators and pick and choose what you think might work for you child. They were a lot of ideas using many different tackics and some will work better for some children then others. I did love the ideas and suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really goes straight to the point!
This book is a great starting point and a good strategy reminder for any teacher, but especially for teachers that don't not have any experience teaching students with Asperger syndrome or High-Functioning autism. (Although it could be applied to any student in many different settings and at any age!).The content of the book in divided in 10 useful simple strategies. Each strategy is presented with an example and the reasons why it is important to use it. I would also recommended it to parents that need to give an orientation to the teachers of their sons or daughters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for teachers!
This is a very user friendly book for busy teachers and other school staff who advocate for children with Asperger Syndrome and related disabilities of all ages. 4-0 out of 5 stars The first resource
This is the book you should read FIRST when your child or loved one is diagnosed. While other resources go in depth on different specifics, the whys and hows and what to do this book gives it to you straight without a lot of jargon and can point you in the directions you need to go next.We purchased this book when our oldest child was diagnosed and have since lent it out to numerous other families in need.We are now purchasing a second copy (we do not remember location of initial copy as it's lent out) as we feel our middle child is also Asperger's and is in the process of testing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uncomplicated Read for those who need help understanding Aspergers
This is soooo readable. You could probably read it in one or two days. It captured my attention from the start of the book. I feel like it is empowering me to see my son in a different light and learn how to help him become the best person he can be.

After my 11 yr old was diagnosed with Asperger's our doctor loaned me her copy of this book.By chapter two I had ordered my own copy.
Clear examples, straight forward language, no mumbo-jumbo. But enough love, understanding and humor to allow any one to appreciate how special our Aspie family members really are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I was so impressed after reading this book, I am still in awe.It is absolutely excellent. When I saw the title, I knew it would be a book I'd likely be interested in as autism is a subject which is very near and dear to me.However, this has far exceeded any hopes I had.If anybody remotely has any interest in autism, this is an absolutely must read.I have been to many workshops and conferences on autism, and this has touched base with somethings I've noticed about from what I have seen at some of these workshops as well as some events I have attended geared to those with autism as well as family members, however, before this, nothing I have read has really touched base on the subject.

This has so totally exceeded any hopes I had, even after seeing the title.

I had originally purchased 3 books, one for myself and two for friends I knew would be extremely interested. However, after reading this, I will be purchasing three more books. These will also be for friends very dear to me who also have an interest in autism and who also have attend whatever workshops and conferences that have been available to them as well and who have noticed also what I have and what this book discusses.

Mr. Stillman I truly owe you such deep gratitude for what you have compiled. This is what some friends and I have just talked and theorized about. Thanks so much, we owe you such gratitude.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on AS
This is a must read book if your child has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.I found it very informative and helpful. The author not only understands how AS kids think he gives wonderful advice about how to deal with just about any problem that they might face from childhood through college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Resource!!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is parenting or in contact with an Asperger Child. It gives much insight and some great techniques for stressed out, tired, lost parents who just want to help in any way that they can.5 Stars!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource...
I've searched high and low for books relating to parenting Asperger children and this is probably the best I've come across.Very informative, not a SUPER easy read, but considering the subject I didn't expect it to be.Probably the easiest read of all the books I've purchased - you can pretty much just open the book to random pages and start reading bits at a time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Advocates promoting conformity at the expense of developing a sense of self
I don't recommend it, in spite of the fact that it provides a useful service by dividing Asperger's Syndrome into a handful of subtypes, and uses the subtypes to provide insight into the behavior of children with Aspergers and effective ways to motivate them.
While it would seem to be a good idea in theory to modify childrens' undesirable behaviors through "natural consequences " e.g., you can keep throwing the tantrum and miss your scheduled checkers game, or you can get with the program and get to go have the checkers game", and sometimes this can be to good effect; some of the theraputic examples in this book seem to be entirely too rigid in the demanding of compliance at the cost of regard for "special needs", such as the sensory issues that many of these children have (while in the same breath, the assumption is that children with Asperger's have "special needs" at home and at school that justify a raft of bureaucratized interventions, including but not limited to therapists like the kind who wrote this book!), or for that matter developing a "sense of self". The latter can be difficult to do if one is affected by alexithymia, a difficulty in recognizing and processing emotions in oneself and others (listed as one of the symptoms of Asperger's in many other descriptions of Asperger's Syndrome, but strangely not in the list of Asperger's Syndrome symptoms in the back of the book!)
A concrete example of this in the book is of a little girl who was given the choice of attending chorus or staying back in the classroom and reading. The therapist convinced her that although she preferred to stay back and read, attending chorus wouldn't be the end of the world. Being a basically cooperative child, she continued attending chorus even though she ended up telling the therapist she still didn't learn to like it any better.
Why this effort to force compliance in an _elective_ activity instead of drawing a distinction between activities held to be _elective_ and those considered _mandatory_? Or having the therapist or parent give the girl a socially-acceptable method of opting out: she could say "no, thank you, chorus practice is too loud for me". Or perhaps giving her an alternate rationale for attending chorus practice, such as "all your friends go" or "your favorite teacher is leading it" if the following situations are the case.
The only explanation I can give is that this therapist and many parents who will undoubtably take his case studies as an example to follow are on an unsavory power trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only book you need
Don't waste your time with 50 books like most parents who are introduced to a diagnosis of aspergers for their child. This covers day to day operations as well as who to understand the background of this diagnosis. Easy to read and sift through. Revisit this book often. The only other book that should go into your library is the explosive child and 123 magic. Perhaps visit developmental books ny Ig as well to compare developmental stages by age.

    Product Description

Asperger Syndrome now affects an estimated 10 million children and adults in the United States. Here, Lawton takes an evenhanded look at AS, its development and symptoms, the biological and potential genetic components, the associated physical complaints, and how natural medicine can help. She includes a history of early treatment and current drug and psychotherapy treatments, and explains how diet, blood sugar, and food sensitivities or allergies can play a role. She also looks at the controversy over vaccinations and explains blood tests that can pinpoint a rationale for herbal and homeopathic treatments. The book includes a chapter specifically addressing what is safe to do on your own and when you should seek the help of a medical practitioner. Resources include a listing of AS traits, books that are reliable sources of information, and authoritative Web sites.

The spotlight on Asperger Syndrome has been widening with recent attention from mainstream media. This neurological condition, often misdiagnosed as Attention Deficit Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or high-functioning autism is increasingly being recognized, and now affects an estimated 10 million children and adults in the United States alone. Unlike autistic individuals, Asperger sufferers have normal or above normal language, intelligence and cognition, and are often seen as brilliant—verbose with formal speech patterns and superior memory—but they have odd interests, unusual reactions to the environment, inflexibility in routines, poor interaction with people, and inability to form age-appropriate relationships. There is no known cure, but as Suzanne Lawton explains in this work, there are approaches that can reduce or remove the symptoms. While traditional medications are the only option for some sufferers, there are those who can benefit from the natural treatments offered by herbal medicine, diet and nutrition, homeopathy, and amino acids. These drug-free approaches also reduce the physical problems common to Asperger suffers, including stomachaches and headaches and irritable bowel syndrome. says Lawton.

Recent FDA warnings regarding the use of psychotropic medications with children (previous treatment has focused on anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, and mood-stabilizing drugs) have fueled the outcry of parents who want to get their children off drugs to avoid the side effects. Here, Lawton takes an evenhanded look at Asperger Syndrome, its development and symptoms, the biological and potential genetic components, the associated physical complaints, and how natural medicine can help. She includes a history of early treatment and current drug and psychotherapy treatments, and explains how diet, blood sugar, and food sensitivities or allergies can play a role. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is a wonderfully written book! I have a son with Asperger's Syndrome and, I have not found a book that compares with this one. There is so much information and real positive steps toward curing, or at the very least dramatically improving your child with Asperger's. I even believe that a lot of this information would also be very helpful to anyone with any form of autism. Must read for teachers, parents, and anyone who knows anyone with autism or Asperger's syndrome!

5-0 out of 5 stars clear, concise and compassionate
First, let me say that I love Dr. Lawton's style of writing. She doesn't fill up space with repetitive fluff. She clearly knows her stuff and doesn't mince words while offering an impressive amount of evidence to support her claims.Dr. Lawton expertly blends both the human and clinical aspects of AS with compassion and clarity.

If you are serious about helping yourself or someone in your life with AS, this book will change your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!

I have learned so much useful information reading your book! This book is a very valuable resource for those with AS, and for friends and family of persons with AS. I'm taking a copy to my therapist - I know she will love it!!!

What are the motivations and desires behind relationship choices and sexual behaviour? Are they very different for those with Asperger Syndrome (AS) than for anyone else? Does having extreme sensitivity to physical touch or an above average need for solitude change one's expectation of relationships or sexual experience? Many people on the autism spectrum have limited knowledge of how to establish or conduct sexual relationships: drawing on extensive research with people on the autism spectrum, the book openly explores such questions. For the first time people with AS discuss their desires, needs and preferences in their own words. AS attitudes to issues such as gender, sexual identity and infidelity are included, as well as positive advice for developing relationships and exploring options and choices for sexual pleasure. This accessible book is an invaluable source of information and support for those with Asperger Syndrome and couples in which one or both partners has Asperger Syndrome, as well as counsellors and health and social care professionals. ... In seeking to understand AS, I have read a number of books and found this one to be supportive in its simplicity and directness. 4-0 out of 5 stars Surface level, but good
I read a post or two that said this book could be for anyone, not just kids with autism, but that's what I like about it. Our kids are seen as different in so many ways this is a great way to make connections of how kids with special needs are just like everyone else. I will definitely use this in my kindergarten classroom to talk about differences with the kids. It can be left on the surface, or given personal, specific examples, it can lead to great conversations.

3-0 out of 5 stars I am Utterly Disappointed...
I was looking for a book to read to my son's 1st grade class during the month of April for Autism Awareness month. I am disappointed with this book along with another one I found. This book is assuming that all children with Aspergers Syndrome share the same qualities, which is the picture this book is painting. I didn't like it and was very disappointed. I was looking for something to help the children in my son's class understand a little more about Aspergers and this book seemed to focus on one type of child on the Spectrum. The two books I found and loved were "Since We're Friends" and "What it is to be Me!". My seven year old loved them both and agreed that they described him more, then the other two books. His class liked both of these books too; I did not read this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars doesn't say much
I was looking for books to help explain to my young daughter that she is HFA (high fuctioning autistic). This book doesn't explain anything and doesn't seem to be about anything in particular either. The only reason you would think it is for or about kids on the spectrum is that the title says so. It is a very simple A-Z format which my daughter (who is 7) gets bored with now. In fact I would just avoid all those A-Z books on Autism. Of the three books I ordered, this was the only one to disappoint. I would recommend "All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome" as a must. Also, "Different Like Me, My Book of Autism Heroes" is a great book, although a bit above my 7 year old still.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 5 year old loves this book
My son who was recently dxd with AS loves this book.I have read it to him several times and I find him reading it by himself often. As is typical of many children with Asperger's, my son is a perfectionist. He has a hard time with any suggestion that he has limitations or that he may not be good at something. This book is focused purely on the positive traits of Asperger's and HFA.I can see him swell with pride as he reads it.He runs around the house quoting the book, "I have a busy brain!I have super senses!" and so forth.I find this book to be a nice, gentle, and pleasant introduction to his condition and hope that this early focus on the positive will help him feel more confident so that when we do start working on his limitations, he'll have this healthy foundation to fall back on in times of insecurity.I definitely recommend this book, especially for younger children. It may be too simplistic for older children but that, of course, depends on the child.

1-0 out of 5 stars The most overrated book I've ever seen!
Because I have a daughter with high functioning autism, I contiualy search for quality products which will help her and those who share her life.I bought this book because of the rave reviews it received.Instead, I was "utterly disappointed".This alphabet book could be written for ANY population - not just those with Asperger Syndrome or High Functioning Autism. There is nothing that informs the child - nothing that helps explain.Feeling good about themselves is a critical component of their journey to self awareness - but WHERE is there anything in this book that helps them make them more aware? For professionals to recommend this book is a huge disservice to those who are searching for real tools and help on this journey. ... This fascinating collection identifies famous figures from the past, whose behaviour suggests they may have had autism, a disorder that was not defined until the mid - 20th century. James looks at the lives of 20 individuals - scientists, artists, politicians and philosophers - examining in detail their interests, successes, indifferences and shortcomings. Among the profiles are those of mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell, who wondered in his autobiography how he managed to hurt the people around him quite without meaning to; biologist Alfred Kinsey, who excelled in academia but was ill at ease in social situations; and the writer Patricia Highsmith, who had very definite likes (fountain pens and absence of noise) and dislikes (television and four-course meals). From Albert Einstein to Philip of Spain, these intriguing individuals all showed clear evidence of autistic traits. This book will be of interest to general readers and anyone with a personal or professional interest in autism. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Offers opportunity for personal insight
This book is not what I expected, yet I appreciate its contribution to the literature on this topic.

Twenty biographical accounts are arranged chronologically. Each offers basic facts about the life and accomplishments of the individual, and includes accounts of their behaviors, their own views of their challenges and accomplishments as well as the perceptions of their contemporaries.

Taken together, these twenty biographies offer me insights into human diversity and the importance of accepting ourselves and others for our strengths as well as our idiosyncrasies. As a teacher it helps me both understand and appreciate unique children.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not another book about famous people who might have had Asperger Syndrome!
I have to say, this genre is getting rather tired, and there is a lot of overlap between all the books on this subject, of which there are many. If you already own one of the other books on this subject, you don't need to buy this one, and if you don't already own a book on this subject, this one is as good as any. What else can I say? It's 20 mini biographies of people the author has researched and considers to show signs of having had Asperger Syndrome. Interesting enough, and probably succeeds in the stated aim of raising the self esteem of people with AS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wholehearted endorsement
Dr. Lovecky's book was a God-send for us. We thought it might provide good insights into one of our sons, who we knew was smart and has ADHD. And indeed it did, on so many of its pages! FINALLY, we found something that described him, and we had hope for breakthroughs with him!

What we didn't expect was to find that the book also provided insights into our other son, who we knew was smarter than most, but who had never been diagnosed with ADHD. We found "him" also "jumping off the pages."

Long story short: we got in touch with Dr. Lovecky and traveled a long way on two different trips to have each boy evaluated by her. We are so glad that we did!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I've read
I love this book so much I wrote to the author to tell her so. It's the only book I've found that offers such profound understanding of the functioning of these children. After years of reading books on gifted kids, books on ADHD, books on Learning Disorders, this is the first book that gets to the truth that 2 plus 2 doesn't equal 4: these kids don't just have the problems associated with each of these diagnosies, they have completely unique problems, and gifts, as well. My copy is underlined, highlighted, dog-eared and constantly referred to. It is an active companion to my journey with my son.
This is practical, informative, intelligent and a brilliant resource for parents, teachers and professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Personal Experience
Though I have not yet read her book, I am a former patient of Dr. Lovecky and can attest to the effectiveness and insight that she embodies. I was in sessions with her for several years, and found that, in those years, I developed a stronger social connection with those around me.She carefully and tactfully helped me to understand the various complexities of social interaction, while navigating me through the barriers of dealing with cruelty from my peers, an uncaring school system, and my own personal faults.I couldn't speak higher of any doctor I have ever interacted with, nor could I ever forget the impact she made on my life.I hope to reconnect with her someday to personally thank her for allowing me to overcome the difficulties of ADD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR PARENTS OF GIFTED KIDS WITH ADHD OR ASPERGER'S
If you are a parent, or teacher/therapist/service provider, to a gifted child with ADHD or Asperger's, this is the best book around.I am puzzled by the reviews that say this is academic in tone - I actually thought it was a tremendously effective and accessible compendium of the seminal research in the field.Dr. Lovecky makes two big, valuable contributions in this book - she documents what we know, empirically, about ADHD and Asperger's kids with high IQs (the focus of much research and treatment is based on the average IQ population, and is not always helpful or appropriate to understanding and working with gifted kids), and she offers many concrete strategies for helping these "twice gifted" children at home and at school to develop strategies for problem solving, social skills development, etc.As a mom of a recently diagnosed, and long misunderstood, gifted son facing extreme executive function challenges, this book made me understand my son better and helped give me some insight into how I can better support him as a parent.I am giving copies to my family members to help them support him as well!THIS IS A FANTASTIC BOOK WORTH TWICE THE PRICE!!!!Thank you Dr. Lovecky for writing it.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!Excellent book!
I have been reading book after book trying to figure out what is going on with my son, and I've finally found it!I had so many "a-ha" moments while reading Different Minds.Even the title speaks to me!

This book not only discusses the issue of twice-exceptionality (a new concept to me), it goes into great detail about characteristics of children with different exceptionality combinations. For example, ADHD is not lumped into one description...gifted kids with ADHD, inattentive-type are differentiated from gifted kids with ADHD, combined-type, based on the fact that their thought patterns, behaviors, and emotional reactions to situation can be markedly different. As an example, there is a paragraph that clearly describes why gifted kids have higher levels of anxiety, and how (in our case) inattentive-type ADHD can cause that anxiety to be even higher due to over-focus.

Another of the great things about Different Minds is that it gives very specific ideas on how to handle these issues.I needed practical, hands-on tools that I can use to help encourage, support and motivate, as well as cope with, my twice-exceptional son.I got some great ideas from this text that were very specific to our situation. The book discusses, as an example, how a behavior management technique that works with a boy with inattentive-type ADHD may not work with a girl with the same combination of issues. The specifics in this book are fantastic.

Also included are discussions of learning styles, which lead to several "a-ha" moments regarding my own personal learning style and that of those I interact with.I believe this can be invaluable in terms of learning to motivate people, both children and adults. This has helped us refine our home/bedroom organization system, as we are all visual-spatial and thus need to see our "stuff."

All this being said, the most important thing, for me, about this book is that after reading it, I did not feel so alone!I finally found a book that "gets" my child and makes him sound normal, at least for a twice-exceptional child!! ... Read more

I felt as if Jude Welton had told me something really really important - winning doesn't always mean success. To be a good sport, in other words! Of course, you get discouraged if you lose. However, nobody's perfect; someone has to lose and you have to accept it. If you ask me, it is crucial to be humble even if you win and to stop losing your temper even if you lose. Since Adam was surrounded by nice people who showed real understanding on Asperger Syndrome(AS), he could learn from his mistakes such as being upset and mean at Josie, his best friend about her better score than his in the math test. Bad sports become easily ornery or jealous when they lose or they feel others are better than them. On the other hand, bad sports tend to put losers down when they win. For more details, how about reading p.108 of Parenting a Child with Asperger Syndrome - 200 Tips and Strategy written by Brenda Boyd?
Anyway, I would be a lot happier if I had been diagnosed with AS earlier and had more people who understand a lot about AS. That was why I found this book quite heart-warming. I'd like to recommend this splendid book especially to Aspies who has been struggling with this harsh reality!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!
This book is the first of the Aspergers Adventures to spark my son's interest. He is nine and really related to Adam. It doesn't hurt that my son's middle name is Adam. He thought Adam was just like him. I have to say that a lot of Adams characteristics were very similar to my son's. We loved the riddles and the alternative endings. We have read the story with each ending and I know this will be a book that we read multiple times. Hats of to Jude Welton!

5-0 out of 5 stars Go, Team Asperger's!
Adam, 9 has Asperger's Syndrome and is not ashamed to admit it.His good friend Josie understands that Adam's social blunders are more often than not part of the Asperger's Experience.Adam has a very astute teacher who also understands Asperger's very well and does everything possible to keep Adam up to speed socially and make sure that he is fully included in all classroom activities.

Every year, the school has Sports Day.Adam dreads this because he is nonathletic and has no interest in sports.Other kids make him the butt of their jokes, which intensifies his aversion for Sports Day.The boy's teacher comes up with a wonderful idea - Alternative Sports Day!Alternative Sports Day focuses on cognitive activities instead of physical prowess and the students are divided into small groups.Adam has a turn at bat, so to speak because at last he is given a chance to shine!

This is truly an outstanding book.I like the way the cognitive activities are included so readers can also test their mental mettle.A wonderful, very interesting story that will not only get one's mental juices flowing, but will remain in the minds of readers long after turning the last page. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars understanding gluten/cf diet and autism
I found this book very informative and as I also have Luke Jackson's other book freaks geeks and aspergers which I also found great. Both books have given me a much better understanding of my son's High Functioning Autism and how he feels and how I may be able to help him.... I recommend it thoroughly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant, informative book
I am the grandmother of a wonderful 6-year-old boy who has been diagnosed autistic, and I've read both Luke Jackson's books (written at ages 12 and 13) in order to get a more complete understanding of the condition from a "kids eye view".I can only hope that Luke keeps writing for the masses.

This particular book is a treasure. The reader is treated to Luke's keen powers of observation and unflagging sense of humor, as always. We also get a couple of chapters written by his exceptional mother, Jacqui, who modestly denies being a "superwoman."(I beg to differ.) It's Jacqui who convinced me that if a woman in charge of a household of eight persons can master the art of gluten-free cooking, then the rest of us just might be equal to the task, as well.Last but not least, recipes, menus, and tips on acquiring and organizing necessary equipment are provided in thorough, easy-to-understand detail.

Perhaps all that might not sound exciting to the average person, but I can assure you that this is one of the most interesting and absorbing books ever to address the titled topics.Witness:in the middle of a work week, I began reading the book at about 11:30 p.m. and read it straight through.I couldn't put it down until I finished at nearly 3:00 a.m.

Inspired by Luke's work, I have gone on line to look up more information about gluten-free diets and related topics and have found a wealth of valuable information. However, the language I used to talk my grandson's family into attempting this new lifestyle came straight from the book reviewed here.

An invaluable resource.A "must" read for anyone dealing with a person who on "the autism scale."Thank you and bravo, Luke, Jacqui and Marilyn Le Breton. You have made a very necessary contribution with this publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hearing child's perspective was a great help
My son, 6-yr-old with autism, has been on this diet for over 2 years, and I just read this book. It was very interesting reading the perspective of a child on the diet. I am now even more motivated to keep my son on the GF/CF diet. If you're thinking of starting it, this book will settle some of your concerns about implementing it, such as how your child will adjust, whether they really will start eating what you cook, what to do when other family members are not on the diet, etc.The author is also not the only child in his family who is GF/CF; he has two brothers on the diet as well and describes their experiences with it.
Luke and family are in the UK, so the appendices written by his mother will be more helpful for UK than US readers, but there is also lots of information that applies in the US. She provides some sample menus and recipes - there really are plenty of things to eat after eliminating gluten and casein. They have also included a list of sources for products, both for the UK and US. ... Product Description

Until the summer of 2007, the word Asperger's, was not a part of Shonda Schilling's vocabulary, but that summer changed everything. By then, her household was in chaos as her son Grant spiraled out of control. His acting out and refusal to listen had grown to epic proportions, but even worse was his apparent inability to relate to the people around him. None of the Schillings' other three kids ever acted like Grant; his behavior wasn't just unruly, it was irrational.

Complicating matters was the fact that Shonda's husband, Curt, was constantly on the road pitching for the Boston Red Sox, so he wasn't always around to see Grant's behavior firsthand. Seemingly everyone Shonda encountered had an opinion—"he's too spoiled," "he needs a good spanking," "he needs more discipline"—but it was a disastrous first attempt at summer camp that told Shonda something was definitely wrong. It was then that a neurologist diagnosed Grant with Asperger's syndrome—a form of high-functioning autism that, in recent years, has been found in children who at first glance appear disruptive and difficult.

Now in The Best Kind of Different, Shonda details every step of her family's journey with Asperger's, offering a parent's perspective on this complicated and increasingly common condition. Looking back on Grant's early years, she describes the signals she missed in his behavior and confronts the guilt that engulfed her after she came to understand just how misguided her parenting had been before the diagnosis. In addition, she talks about the harsh judgment she's faced from people who don't buy into the diagnosis and how she's used passion and information to fight the ignorance of others.

Celebrating Grant's successes and learning from his setbacks, Shonda demonstrates how Asperger's forced her and her husband to reconsider everything they thought they knew about their son and each other, but in the end, it has made their marriage and their family stronger and happier. A tribute to Grant's strength and a candid glimpse into a family coming to terms with its differences, The Best Kind of Different is an intimate portrait of two parents struggling to understand the complex beauty of their son.

This book is hard to put down, Shonda reveals such a personal story in an uplifting, inspirational way that everyone can relate to.It is a very well written book for any parent to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for Sharing.
Thank you Shonda for your honest moving story. Wish I had it to read15 years ago when my son was just being diagnosed as AS.
A very, very frustrating, lonely time. I was almost relieved to have the AS diagnosis believe it or not so at least I could join support networks and make sense of his behaviors. The book is very well written and easy to read.
So many of your stories hit home.Particularly the public melt downs. One of my worst moments was when a learning specialist at the elementary school said to me: "small kids, small problems, big kids, big problems".Boy, I felt the future could only get worse. Well, my 19 yo son turned into a gifted musician, a good student and a wonderful family member. He is off to a highly competitive college.Things have only gotten better.Of course, we are still a bundle of nerves at every new challenge.
You have inspired others that there are ways to get to these kids, find their strengths and put them on the road to success.A family can be a strong foundation for helping these kids succeed.I recommend this book to anyone dealing with a child on the spectrum. Thanks again for sharing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Kind of Different:Our Family's Journey with Asperber's Syndrome
I first saw Shonda and Curt Schilling on Imus In The Morning, talking about their book. What they were saying made me realize that Aspergers may be what my grandson has.I bought the book and what an eye opener. It described my grandson's behavior to a Tee.My daughter read it and made an appointment with a counselor who specializes in this syndrome. This book is so good and gives suggestions as to how to cope. The one thing that really helped my daughter and I was the frustrations she is feeling are just what Shonda was feeling.
I would recommend this book to everyone who suspects their child may have a problem. It will bring tears to your eyes, but will also let you know you are not alone and there is help out there for your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow is all I can say....
This book is an execellent read for I think all mothers expecially. It made me not feel so alone and my feelings not so harsh. Sometimes we don't want to say things out loud...even though anyone who walked in our shoes would understand. Shonda Schilling did an excellent job. I have purchased two extra copies to share with my family...who struggle with understanding. Shonda expresses feelings I have had that my family doesn't understand or realize. She tells of the shell she could put herself in and her "game face" that we all have at sometime.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless for Real Aspies
Mildly interesting autobiographical sketch of someone possibly with mild Aspergers dealing with the business world.Same sort of general advice as other business success books but little practical application.Definitely needs far more detail to be useful for Aspies.Very thin book, grossly overpriced since you can get better info free on the Web.

For Aspie, as well as neurotypical, readers, I recommend Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, poorly written
I have Asperger's Syndrome and was struggling with integrating into the workplace. This book provided a lot of great insight and information, and helped me see how to more effectively operate in a corporate business environment. The book is poorly written, however, as if the writer did it in one draft without the help of an editor.Grammar and sentence structure are often awkward. But I still recommend the book, especially since there aren't many AS books out there for business professionals (most are for dealing with AS children).

2-0 out of 5 stars Too little detail
Speaking as someone with Asperger's syndrome who would like to progress to managerial roles, I was hoping that this book would provide me with lots of valuable insights about how to harness the advantages and control the disadvantages posed by my condition.

Unfortunately, the book is far too thin on detail.Malcolm Johnson provides a few concrete examples of how the tide of events was determined by his condition in a managerial situation, but this book is of little use to me because such examples are few and far between.

Maybe I am already aware of the points he raised (probably because he raised so few points), but I felt a bit ripped off by this book, as I don't really feed I gained any new insights or much about how to operate in a managerial role in spite of having Asperger's syndrome.

Malcolm Johnson shows that he is capable of being perceptive, but you read this book and get the feeling that you haven't learned anything and that there is still far more to learn before you can even think about improving yourself as a manager.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
It may surprise some people to know that people with Asperger syndrome can have demanding careers and be successful business people, which is probably why this is the first book I have seen specifically for people either in that position or aiming to be. Drawing on his own experiences the author looks at issues such as office politics, coping with pressure, managing staff, and building credibility. It is very pleasing not only to see that a more diverse range of employment issues are finally being recognised but that the advice regarding them is coming from people on the spectrum themselves. ...
