Product Description

We Adopted a Dusty Miller is a spellbinding and unusually frank narration of the roller coaster ride parents experience when they love a difficult child and are not successful in finding help. A strong marriage, a supportive family, a sense of humor, a persistent attitude, and the ability, finally, to let go of a heartbreaking situation combine to reveal a picture of the difficult journey many parents endure. The author tells in rapid succession the experiences and feelings that are common to parents of children suffering from Reactive Attachment Disorder, and/or Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Effect. The book describes the behavior usually present in children who are in need of therapeutic care. It provides an argument for the development of wrap-around services for these children and their families, demonstrating the need for community understanding and support. It offers a clear picture of the depth of disturbance that may be present in a child who, to outsiders, seems very charming. Having survived the experience with marriage intact, the Bosleys resolved to offer friendship and encouragement to other families traveling this difficult path in the hope that their daughter’s story will not be repeated. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good Effort, Pathetic Product
It was a truly good effort in talking about children with special needs, but this book is not well written. The grammar and spelling are not great, and the sentence structure is very childish. In addition, there is not much psychological information in this book.As a counselor, I was hoping that this would be a good memoir, but also that people could learn from this family's experience.Instead, there are glossed over life stories and "self defined" ideas of psychiatric disorders. While I'm sure it was written with good intentions, this book was severely disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking
We adopted 2 girls from Russia 11.5 years ago. They just turned 16 and 17, and we've had numerous horrible adolescent problems with them, which I truly believe stem from Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (in the younger) and Reactive Attachment Disorder (in the older). But to read this poor woman's story just broke my heart. It doesn't matter how noble and pure your intentions, or how many different things you try and ways you intervene, some things are simply beyond our control. To be honest, her story was even worse than ours, so it gave me strength that someone out there TRULY understands what I'm going through.I have nothing but respect for these fine people.

2-0 out of 5 stars Brief
It was a very short book, and very brief. It didn't really go into detail about what life was like living with Kristen. It was more of an overview.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Can't Change a Miller Into a Butterfly
Mrs. Bosley presents this small, but remarkable book to
help others.Mainly parents who may not be aware of certain
difficulties encountered when adopting an older child,or
one who was hard to place in a family.
Rather, than scare adoptive parents,I think this will
enlighten them. They will be quicker to ask for help with a
child with an Attachment Disorder, and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
Mrs. Bosley regrets some of the old-fashioned advice
regarding her daughter. She wishes she listened to a Mothers
instinct and held her during tantrums, although she was
told to let the chid work it out.
Education was stressed, and the importance of a diploma.
But a child who never develops social skills is at a total
loss in our society, where first you must communicate and
understand other people.
Anna was probably given more than her adoptive mother realizes.
I thought it was miraculous Mrs. Bosley's marriage held
together, and her older sons remained unscarred by the
upheavel of bring Anna into their midst.
Futher,I commend the telling of this story,so another
family will not feel they have failed. She continues to be
an advocate and facilitator of a support group for other
parentswhose chidren have this double diagnosis.
I hope she lets us know how Anna continues in her Adult
life,if there is progress with age and training.

4-0 out of 5 stars Admire These Parents' Tenacity RE: Older Adopted Kid
See those maudlin TV movies where someone adopts a rejected, older kid and flowers bloom at the end? Any parent in the real world, battling the real issues, knows what a lightweight farce those kind of scripts are. You're literally in the trenches, under siege.

Older adopted kids can be a godsend, as any adopted child can be -- but if they come from troubled, dysfunctional homes, with bad genetics, you are on a collision course to heartache. I bought this book to affirm my own journey with a disturbed teenage girl, who has lived with us for three years, and now is transitioning to a new home. If the disturbed child is a good actor or actress, other adults like sympathetic counselors and teachers will be completely bamboozled. They will assume you're the problem. Charges of false abuse can happen, too. You may feel isolated and alone, especially if you don't have access to superior attachment therapists who see beyond the manipulations of such disturbed children. If you're seen the movie, "Primal Fear," and Edward Norton's performance as the meek, accused murderer, who finally unveils his true calculating self at the end -- that's a disturbed child in a nutshell.

What prospective adoptive parents need to realize, is that emotional and psychological damage within the first three years of life, to a developing, vulnerable baby, can ruin their soul. Neglectful, abusive parenst can do so much damage. Know what you're getting into. Be optimistic, trust God, but buy this first-hand account of what can happen, when the child refuses to attach to a parent. I admire the parents of this story a lot. They kept trying, no matter how hellish it got. Their stories echoed what happened to my family when we tried to help a disturbed child. It is an incredible commitment. Even with all your love, your Herculean efforts to help, to heal, to emotionally connect, unless the adoptive child wants it, it will not happen. I do not mean to be so pessimistic. This book hit a nerve because it sounded a lot like our experiences. Good luck if you're adopting, read a cautionary tale or two, like this one, in addition to the sunny portrayals of life headed toward the sunset. Abide by the cliche, "prepare for the worst, hope for the best." ... Read more

The Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) is both a mainstay of attachment research and a powerful clinical tool. This unique book provides a thorough introduction to the AAI and its use as an adjunct to a range of therapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, parent-infant psychotherapy, home visiting programs, and supportive work in the context of foster care and adoption. 4-0 out of 5 stars An Important Clinical Resource
I bought this book after hearing one of the editor's speak at a recent child welfare conference.

Increasingly, we are recognizing that the attachment history of the parents greatly influences the mood, temperament, behavior, and attachment patterns of the child. Thus, there really are intergenerational patterns to attachment. While some of this is common sense, it can be difficult for people to wrap their minds around. As an example, I work primarily with foster and adopted children and their families; many of my adult clients can't understand how a child who was only with a birth parent for a brief period of time can be so affected with respect to their attachment patterns. This is why I found the chapter in this book on foster parents to be useful and interesting.

Most of the contributors to this volume are researchers. The book is therefore not a 'how-to' for clinicians. But it builds upon what we know about attachment patterns and it is a useful text. If you have read 'Parenting from the Inside Out' by Siegel & Hartzell, the concepts they discussed will be familiar to you. Whereas they failed to instruct the reader how to put the AAI into practice, however, these authors do, but again, not in a cookbook manner.

So, my advice for clinicians is to read this book for the theory (and a little about practice), as well as Hughes' work, which focuses more on the 'how-to' and 'why' of the work.

Product Description
The CDC has reported that obesity is second only to tobacco as the leading cause of associative deaths in America. Can both be types of substance abuse?

A decade ago, scientists hypothesized that loss of control over eating—which results in obesity—may be a form of addictive behavior. Using direct evidence gathered by the nation’s leading experts, Eating Disorders, Overeating, and Pathological Attachment to Food: Independent or Addictive Disorders? examines the relationship between overeating and addiction. In this text, you’ll find case studies, tables, figures, and analyses supporting the hypothesis that there are important similarities between highly desirable foods and the classic addictive substances.

Researchers have only recently come to a consensus that obesity is a disease, but the debate continues as to whether it is related to depression, personality disorders, or addictions. In Eating Disorders, Overeating, and Pathological Attachment to Food, you will gain new insight on:

  • the social and environmental factors related to eating disorders
  • problem drinking and eating disorders from a gendered perspective in a college student population
  • possible neural interconnections between eating messengers and targets for drugs of abuse
  • neuroimaging studies on somatosensory cortex changes and hypothalamus reward responses
  • weight gain following supervised abstinence from drugs and alcohol
With overeating and obesity on the rise, Eating Disorders, Overeating, and Pathological Attachment to Food offers new hope in the quest to help patients and clients successfully conquer their eating disorders and/or substance addictions without substituting one for another. This book is a step forward for concerted research toward a better understanding of cravings, which can lead to new therapeutic options more suited toward eating disorders and drug addiction. ... The concept of attachment disorder has grown in recent years, yet there is considerable confusion among professionals about what constitutes an attachment disorder and how to provide palliative care for affected children. This scientifically-grounded book is the first serious attempt to summarize what is known about these disorders, drawing on theory, empirical research, and experience in child care settings. The book provides an historical overview of the concept of attachment disorder, makes suggestions about how to assess whether or not children are suffering from such a disorder, and explains how to intervene in and manage cases once diagnosed. ... Product Description
Offering the first comprehensive paradigm on the psychoanalytic treatment of adult and adolescent attachment disorders, Jon Mills argues that attachment pathology is a disorder of the self based on developmental trauma that predisposes patients toward a future trajectory marked by structural deficits, character pathology, and interpersonal discord that fuel and sustain myriad forms of clinical symptomatology. This pivotal work constitutes a treatise on the governing psychic processes of attachment on self-organization, adaptation, and conflicted intersubjective dynamics in non-childhood populations. Through conceptually astute technical strategies grounded in sold clinical practice, the author offers one of the most extensive and original frameworks in the psychoanalytic treatment of attachment disorders. ... Product Description
Candace Newmaker was an adopted girl whose mother felt the child suffered from an emotional disorder that prevented loving attachment. The mother sought attachment therapy--a fringe form of psychotherapy--for the child and was present at her death by suffocation during that therapy. This text examines the beliefs of the girl's mother and the unlicensed therapists, showing that the death, though unintentional, was a logical outcome of this form of treatment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treatment to Avoid
Exploitation is the theme of this book. Parents are exploited by such fringe groups of unlicensed "therapists" into going along with quackery and other questionable methods. Most people are determined to keep their child(ren) from being labelled, but that does not appear to be the case in this book.

This book brings to light the horrors and emotional atrocity of Attachment Therapy (AT) aka holding therapy. Anybody who has a child who has been diagnosed with RAD will want to read this book. AT is a form of abuse and quacks like the Tinbergens who were ornithologists and NOT experts on autism as well as Martha Welch tout this method. No scientific evidence is presented to support their claims; only unproven anecdotes are offered. If AT/holding therapy really worked, then everybody would be doing it and nobody would have autism or attachment disorders.

On the other hand, Candace, the child featured in this book has an account that has been proven. Court testimony and video tapes have shown this to be a dangerous practice in some cases. Had this child been treated by reputable professionals who were at the very least licensed, she might be alive today. The authors of this book did a good job of exposing this form of fringe treatment for the crock and emotional fraud that it is and uncovered a sad truth about how it claimed a casualty.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unhelpful generalisation
The difficulty with this book, from its title onwards, is the fact that it uses one example of bad practise to brand a whole style of therapy, a massive section of child development theory, research and practise dangerous and bad.

Attachment theory is highly evidence based, established over decades, and extremely useful in understanding the nature of human relationships. The fact that children who experience abuse and neglect from their carers in early life generally find making new attachments more difficult is proven beyond doubt. And therefore a number of therapies have developed, some very stronly based on evidence and implemented by highly skilled and professionally trained and licensed clinicians, and others that were less effective or evidence based and more controversial.

So, yes, bad examples of practise exist (as they do in every corner of the world in every field) and it is extremely sad that they have led to deaths, and I'm totally in favour of greater regulation of therapy professions if we can prevent or reduce malpractise. However, the implication of this book is to not only tar these examples, but to tarnish all therapists who work on attachment issues or even believe that they exist! It is the equivalent of finding one brand of anti-depressant medication that in rare cases can cause death, investigating one death, and then saying that proves not only that all anti-depressants are bad, but that it is proof that depression doesn't exist.

I'm generally quite against the medical/American idea that every presentation needs a diagnosis that places the problem within the individual (in this case, placing the attachment disorder within the child, when attachment is a relationship and only shows between TWO people). However, it is really unhelpful to make such sweeping generalisations and not to present any of the evidence about how there is also much good therapy dealing with attachment issues and how to help a new parent compensate for the abuse/neglect of a prior carer.

I'm a clinical psychologist, with a doctorate and eight years training and ten years of clinical practise with children including those removed from their family of origin. I can tell you both from my reading and my experience that there are some wonderful, sensitive, child-centred ways of working with parents and carers with attachment issues, that make significant positive changes for people. We need to be building on these, evaluating them with systematic research, and increasing their availability, because they change people's lives and allow children who have been damaged by their past to begin to feel loved and lovable.

Just because there is a bad example, we shouldn't ignore the hundreds of good examples. That would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening
This book pulls together information from many different places allowing the reader to view a concise overview of the problem that is "attachment therapy".

3-0 out of 5 stars Society's parents
I can't, and probably will never understand the willingness of parents to label their children ill. This book is a horrible example of how some parents choose to behave. A real parent fights like mad to not have their child labelled ill, or "disordered". I have children of my own and would never turn on them by siding with so-called professionals that would want to label them with a "disorder". I'm sickened that any parent would reject their child in this way. A parent who calls their child sick is certainly saying much more about themselves than about their child. By labelling their child "disordered" they are ensuring the lifelong suffering and stigma they child will now face. Very disgusting. This book is one that should make the reader take a good look at human behaviour and parenting. There are many parents out there who, without a thought, believe that if a "professional" says that a disorder exists, then it does. We have become a nation of people who can't think outside the box, even if our children's lives depend on it. We have let them down. If this book doesn't make you think, then you are probably one of the parents who is out there damaging your own children with degrading labells already. Average in its writing, nothing special in its presentation, this book only lives on for its subject matter.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless - not credible - riddled with errors
While the authors arrogantly look down upon "the journalistic practice that has been called pseudosymmetry" (page 6), they have effectively also ignored another journalistic practice:accuracy.

It is totally amazing that they contradict themselves on very basic information:
page 5: "...Krystal Tibbets, a 4-year-old Utah child..."
page 243:"...Krystal Tibbets, who died at the age of 3 in 1996."

What is totally mind-boggling is the arrogant presumption to change or deliberately misspell the name of one of the major historical figures:adoptive mother Jeanne Newmaker.

Apparently the authors did not like the spelling of her name, so they changed it to "Jeane" in the book.

If you can't get even the most minor of facts correct, then most certainly one should not place any credibility in the authors for anything else.

Ignore ... avoid this book, which is riddled with arrogant, ignorant errors and not to be depended upon for any type of credible statement. If in a library, please remove it! ... Read more

Product Description
Sexually inappropriate touching, language, and other actions on thepart of children are difficult to diagnose and treat.
Prevailing taboos about sex and the misconception that inappropriate sexual behavior is always a sign of sexual abuse inhibits frank conversation and often leads families to hide problems.

Here WilliamFriedrich, with more than 25 years of experience in the field, offers a research-based andclinically-proven method for assessment, diagnosis, and intervention with children andtheir families. This book distinguishes itselfby Friedrich's emphasis on addressing sexualbehavior problems from an attachmentperspective.

This means that, whenever possible, inappropriate sexual behavior is considered in light of larger family dynamics, emotional security, and child development. Italso implies that family therapy is the idealtreatment modality. An important part of helping a child who exhibits inappropriate behaviorinvolves guidance and reinforcement in the home. Friedrich shows therapists how to include thewhole family in the process while notendangering the child or alienating thefamily.

A key feature ofChildren with Sexual Behavior Problemsis the Assessment and Treatment Manual thatconstitutes the second part of the book.Grounded in the research-based perspectivearticulated in Part 1, the Manual putsFriedrich's insights into practice. Clearguidelines for evaluation and diagnosis areoffered and a wealth of forms for clinicians and clients are included in order to structuretherapeutic work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Friedrich's newest and last book
My long time colleague, Dr. Friedrich writes another book for the treatment of sexually abused children. He was the most compassionate, loving and understanding person I have ever had the good fortune to work with.He has a simple but direct way of dealing with families.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Good!!

I read this book for a book report on Children Psycology class I had, and it was amazing. Itotally recomend this book for parents that are not sure about their children's sexual behavior. It has a great amount of examples that the author relates when he saw some of his patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sexual behavior problems in children:What's really going on?
What is normal? What is pathological? How do you tell?who was abused sexually, who acts out for other reasons? This book addresses these issues with: research findings, boradening of context, clinical case studies. It even provides copies and links to assessment tools.

It is so important that treating therapists do not base their judgments on vague clinical connections, but solid theory and research data. This book paints the context.

I still wish that most attachment theory data did not just measure, for the most part, the quality of attachment between mothers and children and not link it to the wider familial and social context However, this book does also describe and measure other social and familial context, parenting styles, domestic violence etc. as crucial players in the development of sexual behavior problems in children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book for therapists in this area
While I am still reading this book, it is already clear that it offers a great deal to the therapist working in this area.

Friedrich clearly and cogently outlines the contributors to sexualised behaviour in children, particularly usefully examing the role of attachment difficulties .

His manual is very interesting and useful, and we are very likely to incorporate many elements of it into the service we run, although we will need to consider carefully how to integrate it with Australian families and their different culture around therapy.

The PTSD workbook included looks very promising, and I am eager to test it with children I am seeing.

As ever, Friedrich's research base anchors his methods clearly to available research.

The book also encourages the practitioner to read widely about methodologies he describes as useful in the work.

Excerpt: Attachment theory is a psychological, evolutionary, and ethological theory concerning relationships between humans; an emotional bond between two or more individuals. The most important tenet of attachment theory is that a young child needs to develop a relationship with at least one primary caregiver for social and emotional development to occur normally, or without this care, the child will often face permanent psychological and social impairment. The theory was formulated by psychiatrist and psychoanalyst John Bowlby. Within attachment theory, infant behaviour associated with attachment is primarily the seeking of proximity to an attachment figure in stressful situations. Infants become attached to adults who are sensitive and responsive in social interactions with them, and who remain as consistent caregivers for some months during the period from about six months to two years of age. During the latter part of this period, children begin to use at...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=884589 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A note from the author.
Hi.

I wrote this book.

This book comprises short pieces I wrote for performance between 1987 and 1992.

The pieces are an attempt to do for poetry and spoken word performance what Andy Warhol did for art - bring it into the 20th century (and now the 21st) by incorporating a pop culture vernacular into it.

These pieces are superficially "humorous" and "wacky," but anyone who thinks they're JUST "humorous" and "wacky" is missing the point.

As was once said of William S. Burroughs, to criticize their style is to criticize the sartorial choices of a man who is knocking on our door to tell us our house is on fire.

If you have $10 to spend on the latest summer blockbuster flick, or this book, I'm pretty sure this book is a better use of your hard-earned cash. It's passionate, weird, and--in places--laugh-out-loud funny.

Product Description
The Role of Brief Therapy in Attachment Disorders provides a comprehensive summary of the range of approaches that exist within the brief therapy world, including Cognitive Analytic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Ericksonian Therapy, Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy, Provocative Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, and Self Relations Therapy. Historically, many of the founders of these therapies commenced their psychotherapy career as psychodynamic or systemic therapists, and have found their allegiance in briefer therapies, viewing these as more respectful and offering greater potential for assisting the client to change through an outcome oriented approach. A series of case studies bring these theoretical concepts into life and challenges the notion that attachment disorders can only be addressed through a prolonged psychodynamic relationship with the client. The book considers the potential for neurological repair, growth and ongoing development of the individual through the work of Schore, Gerhardt and Hart among others. This opportunity for repair is then linked to the latest theories on attachment disorders and the role of the therapist in creating the optimum environment for change is considered. ... Read more
