5-0 out of 5 stars The book every parent and doctor should read!
I can't say enough about this book.As a nurse, it has all of the medical information I am looking for and as a parent (son with ADD) it is very informative and easy to read. This is a book that can be utilized from cover to cover or to look up specific topics. It does an amazing job of explaining how every child with ADD or ADHD is an individual and discusses all of the factors that may be influencing the severity of our child's problems.Best of all, this book does a very good job of listing many treatment alternatives, the studies and results done on each treatment, and in what setting the treatment is appropriate.Medications are discussed but by no means are they the first "go to" treatment mentioned. At the back of the book are tools for parents, teachers and medical personnel to use as you navigate the best options to help your child. After reading this book, I have been able to work with my son's teachers and implement simple things in the classroom so that he can be successful and proud of himself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is excellent for parents, teachers and administrators. There are wonderful ideas to help in the classroom and at home.I would strongly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, practical behavior manual for parents and practitioners
This is one of the best manuals for my practice with kids with ADHD that I have found.I use this daily and have found immeasureable help in parenting suggestions for parents who are struggling.I am really impressed with this!

4-0 out of 5 stars Through and comprehensive
There's certainly no dearth of information or misinformation on ADHD available to the public. However, compiling a comprehensive knowledge base for the newly initiated is a challenge.I came across this book after reading nearly everything the public library had to offer on ADHD.In this book Dr. Flick succinctly puts together an excellent resource on all the evidence-based information on ADHD.He also includes sections on "alternative" treatments that will appeal to some but is careful to indicate where science meets the marketting.

If you're new to ADHD this tome may be a little intimidating. The writing is here is a bit more dry than some other good sources on the subject like Barkley, Rosenthal, Phelan or Hallowell. Also as with all books on ADHD published before 2000-2002 some of the details on medication are out of date. The only serious omission is an explicit section on choosing good professionals to help you manage ADHD.But if you read and assimilate all the information in this book you should become a good judge of whether or not every member of your treatment team is functioning well.

If you are only buying one book on ADHD to keep on your shelf at home this is it.

2-0 out of 5 stars ADD parent not satisfied!
I purchased this *kit* based on the fact it had ideas, activities ... etc.Maybe me having ADD I missed some info on it?When I got it I was surprised to find it was a book! Not a *kit* at all.So I will probably never use it ... unless I was to purchase a copier machine and print off items as needed. I have read some of it and it had good ideas and info.Just not what I had purchased it for at all!=( ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and educational read
To be honest I never actually managed to read this book from cover to cover. However, I have found the book to be useful and regularly refer to it when I have questions. The first few chapters of the book, reads like someone's thesis research and may not be all that interesting if you're just looking for useful tips and strategies. However, further into the book one can find some very useful information. For example Chapter 9 looks at the implications of being a post-secondary student with ADD. In Chapter 10 the focus is on study skills for the ADD student. Chapter 11 looks at some of the ADD related implications for educators. Also the back of the book has a thick appendix section and is filled with information for students, administrators, as well as instructors. If you are a student or educator who's interested in post-secondary ADHD issues and are interested in research on the topic, then this book is worth owning. I can't say that this book is a must-have for the average ADHD student, but is a worthwhile purchase if you are seriously interested in the topic of ADD in the post secondary environment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have
There are three books about ADD you ought to own (four, if you're a woman.)This is most definetely one of them. Many, if not most books about ADD are helpful but the information is all the same.If you've read one "all about ADD" book, you're probably read them all. This one is very different and is equally helpful for ADD adults and parents/teachers of ADD kids and teens. It's worth every penny and then some.
(The other books I found to be extremely helpful and way above-average in useful content are:
"Driven To Distraction" & "Delivered From Distraction" by Dr. John Ratey and "ADD & Women" by Sari Solden.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on a very confusing condition
Personally speaking, I can't understand why this book is not utilized by more clinicians. Being diagnosed with ADD myself, I've read a lot of the ADD literature. The only other book that compares to this one is the book by Dr. Daniel Amen which uses SPECT brain scans in order to demonstrate that their are real physical abnormalities associated with ADD and ADHD. This book by Fisher and Beckley does the same thing except from a clinical / neuropsychological perspective.

In addition, I feel that this book makes a valuable contribution that is ignored by other leading researchers such as Dr. Russell Barkley. This contribution is the distinction between the hyperactive and non-hyperactive forms of ADD. This is a widely ignored fact which is crucial in deciding what is the best course of treatment, and I can't understand why most researchers in the field ignore it. After reading this book, I only wish that more clinicians had an understanding of the different subtypes described here, and that the psychiatrists who compose the DSM-IV would pay more attention to it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Source of Information on ADD
This book has taught me more about ADD than all the other books I have read combined. For anyone diagnosed with ADD, thinks they have ADD, or is close to someone with ADD, this book will deepen your understanding for what is really going on in the brain of an ADD individual. This book armed me with the information to understand myself better and to better inform my doctor so that he can understand me better. The authors explain the scientific reasons for ADD in its complex detail in a way that can be easily comprehended by any reader. The authors also address a subdivision of ADD that most books ignore and continue to address the vast differences that individuals within different groupings may experience. This is a great book to keep handy as a resource on ADD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful information for those who know they need the info!
Useful information for ADD folks and those who love them. The challenge, of course, is getting the ADD folks to focus on the timely info before they get involved with life: jobs, marriages, interpersonalrelationships......Book is a good baseline from which the non-ADD personcan coach loved ones. ... Product Description
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is one of the least understood medical conditions. With no specific test available, misdiagnosis is common and the results can be devastating for both the parents and the child. Because no one can agree on a single definition for the disorder, confusion is rampant and treatment is only mildly successful at best.Attention Deficit Disorder Misdiagnosis addresses these problems in a systematic and logical fashion. It presents a battery of tests for properly diagnosing ADD, stresses its relationship to brain behavior and proposes practical treatment solutions. Written by an expert in the field who also happens to be the mother of an ADD child, it presents a unique perspective on this complex yet all too pervasive disorder. This is an essential text for doctors, parents and any individual working with an ADD child or adult. It will also help professionals in related disciplines approach ADD as a biochemical medical disorder and understand the reasons for its inherent complexity and frequent misdiagnosis. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Explains why Attention Deficit Disordered people self medicate, with Alcohol and Substance Abuse
Overload: Attention Deficit Disorder and the Addictive Brain allows readers to "listen" to the overstimulated, chaos occurring inside the brain of David Miller, coauthor of the book.We are also provided an enlightening, revealing look at the chaos, other Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder sufferers are confronted with. Alcohol helped David Miller become more focused and calm, initially correctinglow dopamine and GABA neurotransmitter levels, but eventually created more problems than it solved. Mr. Miller provides an excellent description of the heightened anxiety and overstimulation occurring in the newly abstinent alcoholic.

The special gifts and strengths attention deficits convey are also discussed along with the importance of using these gifts. Niches where individuals thrive and excel, after years of inappropriate, ineffective compulsory public education are described. The ordeal of intense emotional pain, failure and rejection students endure in our public schools, receives a voice in this book. Overload increases empathetic understanding and admiration for our fellow journeyers, who live with the disabilities and gifts, which attention deficits bestow.

If public school students and teachers comprehended this book, they might treat Attention Deficit Disordered students more kindly. As Bill Gates (widely considered to have an Attention Deficit Disorder)advised, "Be nice to nerds-You might end up working for one."Overload mentions some famous Attention Deficit sufferers, including Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison who became very successful, despite their failures in public schools. Our most successful patients, at Florida Detox, are generally Attention Deficit Disorder Hyperactivity sufferers.
Their creativity, innovative ideas, people reading skills and ability to "think out of the box," often helps them become very successful inventors, business owners or sales people.

Dr. Blum discusses the neurochemistry of attention deficits and alcoholism, with less depth than he did in Alcohol and the Addicted Brain, but effectively communicates the evidence for Reward Deficiency Syndrome, dopamine type 2 receptor deficiency, and their connection to Attention Deficit Disorders.Discussions of neurofeedback, cranial electrical stimulation, neuronutrient supplementation, psychostimulant medication, acupuncture and other treatments for attention deficits provide a brief overview of treatment possibilities.

Steven Sponaugle, Research Director, Florida Detox

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Was Really Ahead Of It's Time!!
It was sad for me to see that this book is currently out of print.

I am researching the connection between alcoholism and ADD. This book is revolutionary but due to the fact that it was published several years ago - I feel that it did not recieve the attention that it deserved. There is much new research regarding this disorder especially concerning the adult population that this book if had been published now would fly off of the shelves.
Most books on ADD (I've read over twelve) merely suggest that there is a link between ADD and addiction - this book focuses on that connection!!

I was hoping to pick up a copy for myself and a friend but I guess that I will have keep looking for a copy of my own and incur library fines until I do!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For All Substance Abuse & ADHD Treating Clinicia
I have found an either/or philosophy amongst my colleagues regarding the treatment of these disorders. While Substance Abuse Clinicians treat symptoms of ADHD as Relapse Symptoms AND ADHD Clinicians treat the ADHDassuming the substance abuse problem will automatically disappear, thisbook shows why those illusions are not only inacurate but dangeroustreatment approaches. This book bridges that gap more thoroughly than anyother text I have seen on the subject. ALL clinicians dealing with clientsfrom either realm need to add this very well written and researchedbookto their library! In short, I HEARTILY Recomend this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thomas Phelan has wisdom and wit!
I have ADHD...didn't figure it out and get diagnosed until I was 50 years old, but as a teacher and a parent of ADHD kids I'd have to say that Thomas Phelan is right on the money on this topic! He's easy to read and has great insight and solutions for situations we face.Too bad more people don't realize that ADHD is a treatable physical condition and too many children are punished for their symptoms because of ignorance of the facts. This is a really good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it now and throw in 123 magic too!
All About Attention Deficit Disorder should be given out in doctor's offices along with the diagnosis!
It's an excellent and easy to read resource for parents, teachers, and caregivers of any child who has ADD/ADHD characteristics. This book also includes fantastic information for adults who maybe didn't have the "label" as a child but can recognize the symptoms in themselves or a parent who can see the symptoms in themselves now that their child has a label.
I am a special education teacher, not a medical doctor, so I am not allowed to give out any medical or medication advice to parents in school based meetings.
This is the information I would share at those meetings if I could. The straightforward information in clear to understand language with a sense of humor to go with it is a must read!
I also highly recommend adding 1,2,3 Magic to your cart. It's the behavioral "instructional" manual that all children should have tied to their ankle when they come out of the womb. It's an especially helpful read with ADHD and other special needs children with a mental age of at least 2 years but it's a system that works with children of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great First Step
This book isn't meant to replace a visit to your family physician, but to educate and inform parents so they can make the right decision. If your child has been diagnosed with ADD, this book will help you get a better handle on the disorder, help you understand what your child is going through, and help you help your doctor properly treat your child. If you suspect your child has ADD, but aren't ready to take your child to the doctor, this is a good first-step. Get All About Attention Deficit Disorder, read it, and if you feel your child meets the criteria for ADD, contact your family physician for an appointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and comprehensive
Dr. Phelan uses real life examples to illustrate his didactic narrative. He explains concepts clearly and cuts quickly to the heart of important issues. I particularly enjoyed his discussion of the process getting an evaluation for AD/HD. He advocates a thorough, systematic approach to diagnosis. He explains how to make sure that the professionals have covered all of the bases.

He discusses how AD/HD can affect both adults and children. However, he tends to put more emphasis or child and adolescent issues.

Dr. Phelan does not pull punches or sugar-coat the issues. He makes it clear that AD/HD can make life challenging for individual and family. This directness is both the strength and weakness of this tape (and book.) The first couple of chapters tend to emphasize the difficulties. You have to wait a while before you get to the parts that give you some hope. The first couple of chapters might have you thinking about trading your child in for a non-defective model. But stick it out--by the end of the book you will have a clearer idea of the steps you can take to resolve difficulties.

I am pleased that this book is available in an audiocassette version. Many families affected by AD/HD are already spread too thin. They may not have the time or the attention span to sit down and read an entire book. This particular audiocassette was produced in a professional manner. Dr. Phelan reads didactic material and actors dramatize family anecdotes. This breaks up any monotony and makes for an enjoyable listening experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars A really annoying book
This is primarily a compendium of various alternative approaches to treating ADD/ADHD, with the chapters written by different contributors. A few chapters/contributors are helpful and reasonable, some chapters are stating the obvious (I need a chapter to tell me soft drinks are unhealthy?), and many chapters simply offer their authors a venue to peddle snake oil. I confess, many chapters I simply didn't get to, because I couldn't face another page of histrionics about the authors' brilliant cures and the drug companies' evil conspiracies to suppress them. (Note the upper right-hand corner of the cover: if this book really had the "1st Documented Cure for Autism", wouldn't this bit of news rate more than a square inch of their cover?)

The worthwhile information I found here is mostly available online as well. Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Books chief strength is
its conviction that ADD/ADHD is a complex condition that can't be reduced to a single point of origin. Ken Vegotsky, one of the books contributors believes "It is unfortunate for children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD that the North American perspective tends to take a 'one-size-fits all' approach."
