5-0 out of 5 stars Another Awesome Title from Thom Hartmann
Even though this was published in 1994 it is still relevant and chock full of useful gems for those of us with ADD.He offers many strategies for setting up a work life congruent with ADD strengths and offers advice on how to navigate the pitfalls of ADD in the workplace, including when to bring in a Farmer. This book is especially helpful to those who are, or wish to be entrepreneurs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must have book for anybody with ADD
This book really helps you to focus on what is important and teaches you how to deal with distractions in a positive manner. The techniques are genuinely masterful. If you want to succeed with ADD in the business world, than this is the ticket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for entrepreneurs
Every entrepreneur I've ever known has been a person who could be described as having ADD.And this book, which revisits Hartmann's ground-breaking ADD/Hunter/Farmer theory, and then puts it in the context of business, is one of the best business books *for the entrepreneur* I've ever read.(If you work in an office, 9-5, and like it that way, it's probably not the right book for you.If you want to start your own business, though, this book is the key.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book just repeats many time management tips gleaned from other sources. Not at all useful for ADD, which was what I was searching for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Courage, Passion and Integrity
Courage, passion and integrity are just a few words to describe Fragments: Coping with
Attention Deficit Disorder. Ms. Stein takes the reader on a journey through various
aspects of her life and explains how the alternative healing methods that she
has used have helped her cope with ADD. In a world, particularly in the United States,
which is driven by the medical model, Ms. Stein displays clear evidence that medication
is not the only method to cope with ADD. She makes it clear that in order
for a person to understand ADD, he or she needs to explore both their external and
internal worlds. As shown through her own healing path and from scholarly research,
alternative coping methods such as community
gardening, yoga, meditation, community service, and organic farming, that when a person
allows nature, their own kinesthetic abilities, and the initiation of self-less service,
physical and psychological balance can be achieved. From her own
experience and professional practice, Ms. Stein makes it clear that with time and
conscious practice, a person with ADD and ADHD can find the true magic within themselves.
The field of post-modern social work should celebrate Ms. Stein, who has a
voice and uses it for the greater good of humanity. Thank you for writing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A novel and medical journal rolled into one incredible book
Ms. Stein's publication, being an outstanding balance of informative, personal and scientific material, provided me with a fresh outlook on how to perceive and deal with my ADD. For years I suffered through the many negative effects that ADD had on my adult life.Being personally averse to resorting to medication whenever possible I often dealt with the ups-and-downs, as well as with the well-wishers telling me to take the pills, take the pills, take the pills. Ms. Stein's painfully personal accounts of her own dealings with ADD are a relief to the fellow sufferer. Her book reads like a novel, informs like a textbook, and cites studies like a medical journal. It is indeed a highly recommended read for anyone who comes into personal or professional contact with, or those who have, ADD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative
I found Fragments to be moving and engaging and could not put it down! I read it straight through until I was finished!
Amy, offers creative alternatives to traditional treatment for those who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.
Her personal experience and dedication to this subject, offer hope and encouragement to those who struggle, or know someone struggling with ADD/ADHD. Enjoy the ride, as she takes you along on an incredible journey of creativity, learning and faith !

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting
This a very interesting account of a woman who has AD/HD. She discusses her struggles and her journey through life with AD/HD. She tells about the different options that she has taken to help manage her AD/HD and what worked for her.

Product Description
In the late 1980s, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and its treatment with the drug Ritalin came to national attention and became one of the most hotly debated health issues. That debate continues to rage today. But for the millions of ADHD children, adolescents and adults, it still remains painfully difficult to get clear and authoritative answers to the many questions that this confusing disorder poses. Do I have a correct diagnosis of ADHD? What kind of medication might be helpful? What else can and should I do to help myself or my child deal with this problem?

Now, at last, the authors of Beyond Ritalin, acknowledged experts on ADHD, provide a complete road map and guide for coping with this disorder. Including anecdotal case histories, as well as a complete checklist of ADHD symptoms, charts, work sheets and a comprehensive list of valuable resources and support groups. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Did not help us
This book provided little help to us in the years we were desperate for assistance.

For one thing, it focuses to narrowly on the ADHD as a disease, and not nearly enough on the possible causes. For another, the book completely dismisses the fact that by the time most parents get around to using Ritalin for their kids, they have already tried all the behavioral modifications suggested in this volume. We certainly did, to the extent of hiring a private physician to observe our child in the classroom and carefully lay out strategies to help the teacher and school staff constructively contend with our child's issues.

Now it is certainly true that medication is NOT a be all and end all, and most parents who do put their children on Ritalin or other stimulants, do so with the hope that they can eventually develop coping strategies that will enable them to function without the medication.

Having said that, however, behavioral modification is no more a be all and end all than the medication! And in some cases, for a host of reasons, it simply does not work on its own.

Sure, it is important to teach children the proper rules of behavior and conduct. Of course, medication cannot do that. But for heavens sakes, does anyone really think that it would? We certainly did not, and in the same way, we were open to considering anything that showed proven efficacy in dealing with the medical realities.

One of those, which few medical doctors discuss, is neuro-biofeedback, of both the eeg and heg varieties, which we have found exceedingly helpful. and continue to use. Doctors, too, should expand their horizons---not only beyond medication, but beyond behavior modification.

Diet and vitamins are also important factors, for example, considering that the human brain continues to grow and develop until a person is about in his or her mid 20s. That's another thing this book does not discuss, and very few physicians mentioned to us, either. But nutrition is very very important.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant place to start your fact finding.
One evening when a coworker was studying for a CEU course on ADHD, I happened to peruse the text she was using for her course. It contained a lengthy list of behavioral symptoms for the sufferers of ADHD, and I suddenly realized that an acquaintance exhibited nearly all of them. When I mentioned it to the individual, they replied that they'd always thought that they had the disorder, but that it had never been diagnosed.Since it was obviously very disruptive of their life, I decided to do a little research to see if I could find out anything that might conceivably help.

Although "Nature's Ritalin for the Marathon Mind" was my first book (chosen since it dealt with the use of physical exercise in helping focus the sufferer) the book "Beyond Ritalin" by Garber, Garber, and Spizman was my second. What I found especially impressive was that the authors did not espouse any given method of treatment. They were not "all for' or "completely against" medication as a method of approach, and they were up-front with what medication could and could not do for the sufferer of ADHD.

More than anything the authors made it obvious that ADHD is a DIAGNOSIS and NOT AN EXCUSE.It is not an excuse for the sufferer to "drop out" of the world or give up because it's "hopeless" and certainly not an excuse for parents to give up on parenting the child with ADHD just because he/she is "on medication" or "impossible."

The discussion of the various types of medications available was very honest, describing potential side effects, variation in individual response, and effective limitations. Most importantly, as they point out in some of their section headings: "Medication does not teach socially acceptable behavior (p. 130),""Medication does not help ADHD youth or adults feel happier (p. 130)," "Medication does not teach reflective thinking (p. 144)," "Medication does not teach you how to control where to focus attention (p. 145)," "Medication does not make the individual organized (p. 161)," "Medication doesn't improve self-esteem or self-confidence (p. 206)," etc.In short, both the sufferers and their families have a lot of work to do, and it's hard work. However, not to do that work is to spend the rest of ones life spinning ones wheels.

Among the suggestions for treatment of the disorder are those that the authors have found effective in their clinical practice.Their observations about complications arising from learning disorders and skills deficits were very cogent.Certainly the individual suffering already from ADHD is beat before they start until learning problems are addressed and missed skills are remedied possibly with the aid of special tutors.

Suggestions for behavioral training (with respect to remembering things, completing projects, organizing the environment and ones day) were all very helpful as were the social skills training for individuals who have difficulty making friends and "fitting in."The problems with task commitment and test taking were especially informative. The authors' point out that many individuals can do the work but may find testing situations frustrating and overwhelming.I especially found the hints about limiting and defining the task, sometimes even visually (by covering part of a page with a piece of paper) were helpful, as were those offered for developing organizational skills. As they write with respect to the latter, "Most people find getting organized difficult. The difference is that whereas most people can get away with being disorganized, those with ADHD cannot.Since ADHD people are easily distracted, disorganization can 'do them in (p.173).'"

The authors also point out that living with ADHD can be very stressful and irritating.Their chapter "Taming the Tiger Within" points out that medication can be somewhat lumpy in its effects throughout the day.It also may make the person look and act calmer, but may leave them actually feeling just as they always do.They can listen better, accomplish more, get better grades, but still not feel calm or relaxed. The authors suggest some progressive relaxation training, or imagery:"Relaxation exercises remain one of the best ways to manage symptoms of ADHD and to permit the individual to acquire feelings of control (p. 186)."

The last chapter pertains to ADHD among adults. Here the authors note that ADHD is not a disorder that the sufferer just "grows out of with time" but continues to effect the individual into adulthood. Most significant are the findings that in adulthood the outcomes of the disorder do not seem to be distinguishable between those individuals treated with medication as children and those who were not.It seems that multidimensional treatment modalities have a greater chance of improving outcomes and that it's never too late to get help.

5-0 out of 5 stars A balanced approach
This is an excellent, well-balanced book for parents, or anyone else who works or lives with a child with ADHD.
What I found particularly helpful in this book were some of the excercises the author described to help children with ADHD compensate for their restlessness, impulsiveness and distractability.
They recommends the children's game "statues" to help a child stay still longer. A stopwatch is used in most of the activities, and the goal is to "beat the clock". With statues the goal is to see how long the child can hold their "statue" position. While playing a game, the child is also practising standing still.
There is a lot of good information about medication in this book. The author is neither for or against medication, but instead provides good information on what medication can and can't do.
As a parent of a child with ADHD, I found this a very useful book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped for.
I had great expectations for this book.Unfortunately, it was not what I had hoped for.It is very dry, and doesn't come across as in language appropriate for the general public.I found myself disagreeing with the author throughout the book.I respect those who try alternate methods of treating ADD/ADHD.However, I think that most parents have tried everything, and that for some Ritalin has been a godsend.Of course there are many other medications now on the market, but putting my child on Ritalin three years ago made all the difference. He has his confidence back, and I believe that it will lead to a successful future. No parent wants to medicate their child, but for those who do it is not a negative thing.I found myself feeling guilty while reading this book that I had done something wrong. The last thing a parent needs is more guilt.I think the author could have been more politically correct in writing this.

5-0 out of 5 stars please readbefore you consider ritalin
If we had put our daughter on ritalin she would have gone into a full blown manic attack. She was diagnosed with depression with ADD as a side-effect. If you look carefully at the DSM-IV criteria for eitherdepression or a BiPolar disorder it is easy to see how the classic symptomsof mania or depression can be misdiagnosed as ADHD/ADD. There is a currentstudy out that shows that nearly most of the children diagnosed as bipolarhave ADHD/ADD as a co-existing condition and if mistreated with a stimulantlike ritalin, can further push a child into mania. ... Product Description
The story of Willie is the story of an intelligent, creative, healthy child who, as his mother says, is "wired" a little differently from other people. Nearly ten percent of school-aged children are diagnosed with ADD-Attention Deficit Disorder-and the condition has vaulted into the public awareness. Now, for the first time, a mother speaks out about the day-to-day realities of life with a child with ADD.This honest, moving, heartwrenching, and joyful account of Willie's first five years details a dizzying parade of doctors, schools, treatments, and therapies, and the inevitable emotional seesaw that ensued. Through the insensitivity of a preschool staff to the psychologist who labeled Willie "brain-damaged," Ann and her husband searched for the key to Willie's bouts of belligerence and excitability, strengthened by their love for him, and by their belief in their son's ability to overcome these challenges. Their-and Willie's-ultimate triumph is an inspiration and a lifesaver for a family facing ADD or any other crisis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great giver of information and very readable
I absolutely loved this book.It gives an excellent first person view of what is it like living with a child with ADD.The reader follows the mother (the narrator) through her journal entries about coming to discover that her little boy had ADD, and finally getting a correct diagnoses, and then finally finding a school that catered to his specific learning style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for families who struggle with ADD
I am a mom of a similar little boy with ADD and horrible experiences in "wonderful" preschools.I am so glad that Ann shared the storyof Willie & his family. It is a moving, accurate and compelling storyfor anyone struggling to help their child feel good about themselvesdespite unacceptable behavior. My favorite line from the book relatesprecisely how I feel about my son, "buried treasure: Willie's trueangelic sweetness, hidden deep under his symptoms."I am also aPediatrician who knew how to make a diagnosis and start him on medication, but I am only now learning how deeply I have hurt for and with my son as hetried to be a "good boy" but simply couldn't sometimes.Irecommend this to my patients' parents, and am grateful for Ann's sharingand Willie's courage.

4-0 out of 5 stars An inside look at life with a child with ADHD
This was a very close-up look at the day-to-day life of a mother and her ADHD child. The author uses journal entries to track the frustration, worries, behavioral difficulties and lack of acceptance she and her sonface. As the parent of a child with ADHD, I felt that this book wastelling my son's story. It was very specific and accurate, not biasedtowards or against medication, and it presented a personal view of a verypervasive and painful disorder for both child and parent.I wouldrecommend this book highly to anyone who wonders if their preschooler hasADHD, to professionals who doubt the significance of ADHD and to others whowould like to know what life is really like for families like the author'sand mine without all of the media hype and controversy.A very readableand touching story.

3-0 out of 5 stars I am not alone
This is a very well written book about a child with ADHD.I have gone through the last 4 years thinking that I was alone and that I would have to live with my child and her overwhelming problems. This book showed me thatI WAS NOT alone and there are many things that you can do to cope with aproblemed child and there is help to be found. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars practical good advice from someone who has been there
i purchased this book some time ago.i've loaned it to patients' parents many times over the years and folks have always reported the same thing - it is full of helpful advice to parents of children with attention disorders.it is written in an easy-to-read style.it is entertaining.the author offers practical advice for others struggling with a situation that is very difficult to manage.very good.well worth the purchase price, new or used.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful parent's guide
Mrs. Isom did a wonderful job in keeping her book in a flowing informative manner; her sense of humor while taking action to help her child grow into an adult was very apparent. Thanks Marie for the help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful, practical help for parents
Marie has lived with an ADHD kid, and has not only survived, but thrives on helping other parents find resources and help for their kids! Her approach is lively, caring and flexible.Highly recommended by a clinical psychologist/neuropsychologist, who offers EEG biofeedback in her practice!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Approach
As a mother of three, all of Marie's approaches can work with any child. It gives great alternatives in helping your child get past sticking points. It also helps parents understand that each child is different and needs to be treated as such.I think it is great that someone finally gives parents a new out look on how to deal with such a special child.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Road Map for Parents with ADD/ADHD children
I have been a psychotherapist for 20 years and find this book to be extrememly helpful to all parents of children with attention deficit disorders. Most books on the market written for parents are written by professionals - mostly for professionals. If you want a good, "when, where, who, what and why" of add/adhd, then this is the best book I've come across.I love Marie's overview of alternative practices which include:Holistic Medicine, homeopathy, hair analysis, bio-feeback/neuro-feedback, rapid eye technology, applied kinesiology, meditation, relaxation techniques, massage, acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractic adjustments, the use of color, art therapy, magnetic field therapy, music and toning.
This is not a one size fits all book - lumping all of our children into one category "needs drugs."This is a book from the heart, from a mother who deeply cares about her children and went to bat for them. The squeaky wheel does get the oil, and in my book as a psychotherapist, a good mother speaks up, and speaks up, and speaks up - until heard.I very much enjoyed Marie's refreshing humor - her care and concern for her family genuinely shine through. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Learning Differences
This author, Jeanne Gehret, writes with understanding and empathy for those (especially children) with learning differences. She uses the story to highlight some strengths often possessed by them even though they struggle with learning differences. I would recommend this book and others by this author for anyone who struggles with or loves or wants to help someone who lives with these struggles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for Difficult Mornings

I already have Jeanne Gehret's other two books, so when Sandra Reif and Thomas Phelan recommended this book, I was impressed. It's great. Apparently the illustrations were just updated and they are rich and detailed. I especially like "The Morning Song" that is included in this book; you can actually play it on the piano and teach it to your kids to get them ready for school.

This book is very useful because of the detailed information on hundreds of college programs for the learning disabled. The number of colleges covered has increased from the earlier editions. 4-0 out of 5 stars Much easier to use than Peterson's
This book has more information and is much easier to use than Peterson's. I found Peterson's useless, and I am purchasing this (I tried them both first at the library).

2-0 out of 5 stars Big but less than useful
There is a lot of info in this book, but I live in Washington and it only had info on 2 schools. A much better book is Peterson's Colleges for Students with Learning Disabilities or ADD.It separates into 2 & 4 year schools and also direct or self-directed programs. The purpose of these books should be to give you some direction as to which schools have something, and ways to contact them for more info.Tons of data about fewer schools is not that helpful, which is how I see this book. All of these books would be even more useful if they included a CD or online search capability so you didn't have to try to scour thru a large written book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very basic information re: only a relatively few colleges
I had hoped that _The K&W Guide to Colleges: For Students with Learning Disabilities or ADD_ would be useful in selecting an appropriate college for an LD kid. Unfortunately, it was not.

On the plus side, it contains basic information in an easy-to-use format. However, that positive is outweighed by the negative: it seems to only sample a few of the many colleges and universities in the US. E.g., UC-Berkeley is included but UC-Davis is not. (Most UC campuses, like most colleges and universities, are not.) However, the services provided at UCD are similar to those at UCB. Similarly, USF and USC are included but Mills College and Stanford are not, although the schools that are excluded seem to have the same kinds of services as those that are included. The same pattern occurs among two-year colleges.

I could find no explanation of why any given college was included or excluded. Without such understanding, the book seems like a random collection of colleges with very basic information about what types of services each provides. I don't see how it is helpful in selecting a college for someone with an LD or ADD unless you've already determined which colleges you'd like to attend and are fortunate enough to have all those colleges included in this book. Even then, most the information in this book would be readily available on most colleges' web sites, along with a wealth of useful information about accommodation that's not included. Therefore, I think that for most LD or ADD students, this book is not very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Parents of LD kids
I found this guide to be just what I was looking for.By reviewing the admissions procedures for LD kids, and seeing the number of staff a university devotes to assisting students with disabilities I am able to direct my son to schools that can best help him.I was very encouraged to find the University of Arizona and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill among major colleges with strong programs.I bought a second copy to give to our high school. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This ground-breaking work argues that the behavioral manifestations of attention deficit disorders--hyperactivity and impulsivity--represent a person's attempts at self-regulation. The authors view Attention Deficit Disorder as a problem with the regularity, control and fluency of attention; people with ADD have trouble balancing the demands of sustained focus against forces such as novel, intense, or affectively driven preferences. The essence of attention dysfunction thus transcends the issues of a child's (mis)behaviors to its cognitive, affective, social and personal aspects.

Section 1 presents the conceptual underpinnings: the history of ADD, the nature of attention, the authors' view of attention as a self-regulation system, and the impact of this view on issues of motivation and social/emotional status. Section 2 addresses the implications for instructional practice--in school generally, and in reading, math and written language specifically. The final chapter presents case studies demonstrating how this conception should shape student programs. This book is an important addition to the thinking and practice relating to students--and adults--with ADD! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent exploration
This book examines the many systems that come into play in the mind, and attempts to analyze how they interact. It goes way beyond a child's inability to pay attention in class or sit in a seat.

For example, the authors discuss the question of motivation -- a big one for kids who are often blamed for not trying hard enough. They cite the importance of meaning to motivation, and point out that external motivators, such as tokens and teacher exhortations, are not likely to be effective with the child because they have little real personal meaning for the child.

As I read this book, I often think that at last I am reading descriptions of ADD that match the complexity of what I actually see in my child.

The book seems intended for professionals rather than parents. It is pretty technical in its discussions of the brain, neurotransmitters, etc., and cites a lot of studies. It is not light or quick reading.

On the other hand, if you're tired of reading the same simple descriptions of ADHD, with a prescription for a token and reward system, you might welcome the depth of this book. It doesn't soove your problems, but it helps you gain a deeper understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents with ADD/ADHD children need to read this book.
As the mother of an 8 year old boy who has ADHD (only recently diagnosed), this book has been a lifesaver for my son and me. My son was literally failing to learn to read, almost living in the principals office, andstruggling socially. His reading is now at or above grade level (with someremaining phonemic challenges). Four weeks ago, he started at a publiccharter school where he is no longer labeled as being "bad" forhis "ADD" behaviors. And socially he will be part of astructured program to teach him appropriate behaviors. This book not onlyexplains the challenges that interfere with these children's abilities inall areas of their lives but gives solutions. Solutions that schools andparents can implement for success. My son is living proof of how importantthis information is to changing the direction of a child's life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ADD in the Classroom, a teachers perspective
I was extremely excited when a teacher collegue of mine introduced me to this book. I have had many ADD and ADHD children in my class and have always struggled with them. I read this book with much enthusiasm looking for help all the way. I realized that my behavior towards these children was hindering them from growing, I have learned I need to be a better communicator with the parents and child about my expectation and set up a program that will help the child to meet our goals. Most importantly I have learned I need to be CALM with these children and model the behavior I expect from them. I have learned so much from this book.I look forward to trying these techniques in my classroom next year.

Product Description
By popular demand, Dr. Clare B. Jones has written a sequel to her highly successful Resourcebook for Children with Attention Deficit Disorder. This book, Attention Deficit Disorder: Strategies for School-Age Children, follows children from first grade to their completion of a college degree or vocational training certificate and into adulthood. This valuable resource blends Dr. Jones' sensitivity and respect for children with a set of proven and practical strategies that focus on helping these students become educated.

Dr. Jones also challenges adults to change the negative messages that they unwittingly convey to children who struggle with attention deficit every day. The volume focuses on what teachers must stop doing instead of what they must do. Up to 80 percent of statements made to these students are about things they forgot to do, are doing wrong, or failed at Rather than focusing on what is wrong with these children, Dr. Jones draws on their strengths to build their self-esteem and teach them strategies and coping skills. The resulting educational approach enriches all children and helps them learn, whether or not they have special needs. Through classroom accommodations and a variety of instructional approaches, teachers can individualize instruction to their students' learning activities without relying on one-on-one instruction and extensive individual attention.

Much of the information is summarized in handouts that can be given to the person with attention deficit or to his or her family. An added bonus in this text is a section dealing with adult ADHD. This manual also includes lists of resources, support groups, national organizations, and newsletters that can be passed on to clients and their families. ... Read more

Today it remains the only text totally dedicated to attention disorders in early childhood. Now Dr. Jones has updated and expanded the information in the original Sourcebook. This revised edition includes handouts and take-home sheets for Spanish-speaking parents.
