If allergies make you wheeze, sneeze, drip, itch, puff, ordroop, or if asthma makes you feel like an elephant is standing onyour chest, you'll want to read Allergies and Asthma forDummies. Author William Berger, M.D., M.B.A., knows his stuff. Heis a practicing allergist, a member of the task force that developednational guidelines for treating allergic diseases, and a former staffallergist for the U.S. Olympic Swim Team.

You get much more thanthe basics here. You learn how to prevent and treat the common typesof allergies, with extensive information on hay fever and skin rashes, and short but helpful sections on allergic reactions to food, drugs, and insects. The asthma section is especially comprehensive, withinstructions for recognizing and managing asthma triggers, monitoringair flow, selecting the best medications for both short-term andlong-term relief, and special considerations for pregnant women andchildren. The book covers both self-help and pharmacological treatmentmethods in depth, but not alternative treatments.

One of the mosthelpful chapters is "Relieving Your Rhinitis," which will appealespecially to the 45 million Americans who suffer from hay fever.Allergic rhinitis (the medical term) is not a fever and is caused notby hay, but rather by airborne pollen from grasses, trees, andweeds. The commonly used over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays may not be your best choice, saysBerger. He describes the uses and advantages of recommendedprescription drugs, and advises a medical evaluation to choose theright one for you.

The book's style, though still easy tounderstand, is not as casual or humorous as the typical ForDummies book. This may be because Berger is more intent onpacking a bundle of helpful medical information into the book thanbeing witty. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have allergies, you need this book!
I got this book about two weeks after my 9-year-old son suffered his first asthma attack. After reading it, I feel much better prepared to cope with his condition. The author's tone is reassuring without being condescending. And there is an enormous amount of information, everything from how to choose a specialist to charts describing the effects and usual dosages of the most common medications. Since I have been suffering from allergies and sinus problems myself this spring, it was especially useful. I think this might be the best investment in our family's health I ever made!

Finally, a book that quickly synthesizes complex information into usable pieces!Allergies and asthma are de-mystified with practical examples.Dr. Berger's approach is uplifting, reassuring, and warm.No preaching orinsistance that you do things his way or no way as in the case of so manyother authors of asthma and allergy books.Top Choice on Allergy andAsthma Network/Mothers of Asthmatics, Inc. 4-0 out of 5 stars This book and a good HEPA machine - breathe easy!
A great book, almost as good as the Allergies and Asthma for Dummies book.Required reading for the Respircare Analytical training course.

2-0 out of 5 stars Conventional management- we have heard it all before
Asthmatics are now better informed and can research the effects of medication, allergies etc very easily. This book has nothing to offer to HELP people with asthma. It adopts a very narrow approach specifically using medication.

One point that the book fails to discuss properly is the Buteyko method for asthma. The Buteyko methid without doubt the best help for asthmatics. It works by correcting breathing and reducing hyperventilation. I am always dissapointed as a once chronic asthmatic to read asthma books offering the same stuff. The only thing that ever helped me was the Buteyko method. Unless your asthma book has the details of this- it is letting asthmatics down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great first asthma book
I was skeptical of the name. However, I leafed through it (and many other asthma books) in a brick and mortar store before I bought this book. And I am so grateful! It's easy to read, but doesn't shy away from the technical and biological concepts you should know.It has nice diagrams for those of us who need the visuals to understand somewhat complicated biology.

I feel so much more informed about my disease after having read this book.I feel like I can talk with my doctors and know what questions to ask them, and understand their responses!I can honestly say that after reading this book, I was able to advocate for my own health enough that I feel I can breathe properly and happily now.

There are medications and small lifestyle changes out there that can improve an asthmatic's quality of life immensely. But it is important first to understand the disease itself and then what each medication or technique may do to help. This book is a good start, and I highly recommend taking the step to improve your well-being.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, genuine, and doable
Asthma is serious; 15 people die of asthma each day yet many people don't take their symptoms seriously. Asthma for Dummies is both serious and yet conversational. It's practical, genuine and doable. It's got something of value for anyone interested in predicting, preventing, and responding to symptoms proactively.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dust Mite's Favorite Read
This book was extremely helpful in answering my questions about a recurrence of asthma after being free of symptoms for many, many years. I learned that you never really outgrow asthma and a recurrence is not unusual. I thought the book focused too much on allergies and did not explain how humidity might effect asthma. My symptoms get worse on chilly nights after a day of rain so weather seems to be my asthma trigger. Also the book does not contain any information on asthma support groups and neglects to cover controversial theories about asthma. However, it does describe all the medications you might be prescribed and their possible side effects. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Must Read Book for Women Diagnosed with Breast Cancer
The diagnosis of Brest Cancer usually comes unexpected and is emotionally overwhelming. Decisions that will have a lifelong impact often need to be made within a short period of time. The authors explain in detail all the different screening options, the various treatment options at all stages of the desease, and, most important, surgical reconstructive procedures performed either in conjuntion with a mastectomy/lumptectomy or at a later time. Diagrams, drawings, and "before and after" pictures help to visualize the results of reconstructive surgery.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Woman's Decision
I did not particularly care for this book - too broad and not easy to read - too general.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like talking to 17 Friends Who've Been There
I had a bilateral mastectomy with tram flap reconstruction in May 2002.The decisions I had to make were agonizing. This book was the best I found on the subject, and I read and re-read the case histories that were closest to my own situation. The information proved to be accurate and gave me a realistic expectation of the process and the results.I recommend this book to anyone undergoing breast surgery, with or without reconstruction, as it covers a wide array of decisions that other women have made.

My plastic surgeon gave me this book to read.It was the best book on breast cancer I've found, and I've built up quite a library lately. Product Description
Geology and Health is an integration of papers from geo-bio-chemical scientists on health issues of concern to humankind worldwide, demonstrating how the health and well-being of populations now and in the future can benefit through coordinated scientific efforts. International examples on dusts, coal, arsenic, fluorine, lead, mercury, and water borne chemicals, that lead to health effects are documented and explored. They were selected to illustrate how hazards and potential hazards may be from natural materials and processes and how anthropomorphic changes may have contributed to disease and debilitation instead of solutions. Introductory essays by the editors highlight some of the progress toward scientific integration that could be applied to other geographic sites and research efforts. A global purview and integration of earth and health sciences expertise could benefit the future of populations from many countries. Effective solutions to combat present and future hazards will arise when the full scope of human interactions with the total environment is appreciated by the wide range of people in positions to make important and probably expensive decisions. A case to illustrate the point of necessary crossover between Geology and Health was the drilling of shallow tube wells in Bangladesh to provide non-contaminated ground water. This ""good"" solution unfortunately mobilized arsenic from rocks into the aquifer and created an unforeseen or 'silent' hazard: arsenic.Geologists produce maps of earth materials and are concerned with natural processes inthe environment with long time-frame horizons. The health effects encountered through changing the water source might have been avoided if the hydrological characteristics of the Bangladesh delta had been known and any chemical hazards had been investigated anddocumented.A recurrence of this type of oversight should be avoidable when responsible parties, often governmentofficials, appreciate the necessity ofsuch integrated efforts. The book extols the virtues of cooperation between the earth, life and health sciences, as the most practical approach to better public health worldwide. ... Read more

The Editorsof 'Geology and Health' have produced a collection of papers that will be of great interest to medical specialists, biologists, and geologists. Interdisciplinary studies on natural hazzards such as arsenic in groundwater and geochemical concentrations of toxic heavy metals in soils are required to understand the origins and pathways of some diseases. This new interest in geomedicine has been stimulated by EPA regulations and by advanced laboratory intstruments that produce extremely accurate chemical data on toxic concentrations in water, soil, and air. 5-0 out of 5 stars Helped Hook Us on LR & FO Science Books
We rather enjoyed this book. My child (then newly 5yo) was fascinated with it. We found the hygiene coverage sufficient... altho the importance of handwashing and such has been easy for us to instill as parents. The illustrations of what goes on 'in there' microscopically really seemed to help her grasp the concept of what a germ is. Definitely happy with our purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Germs Make Me Sick
This is a good children friendly teaching book that shows kids what they should and should not do when it comes to staying away from germs.Very creative and attractive illustrations that peak a child's interest. The book actually contains facts that even adults should know and practice. This is a good, fun, science, math and health book all in one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite to read to my kids and now to their kids.
I got such a kick out of the reviewer who said he thinks disease is cause by sin!THAT guy should write a book.

IMO, 'Germs Make Me Sick' tells kids what they need to know. It's not a text book on virology/bacteriology, ... well, ... maybe a FIRST text. The grown-ups still have a role to play by telling kids about hand washing & chicken soup. But this is a fun way to help them remember what they need to know and be just a little safer than they'd be without that knowledge.

3-0 out of 5 stars A terrible case of indoctrination of children
From all this fuss about "germ theory" is it just that: a theory.Pasteruians want us to believe that disease is caused by invisible tiny animals, well that's a religion if I ever hear of one. And you're welcome to believe that if you want.

I want my children to believe the biblical account of disease: it is caused by sin. Whenever my kids get sick I just tell them that they should be ashamed of themselves and their filthy, sinful thoughts. If they were really sincere in their prayers they wouldn't need their supposed "medicine".

I can't believe that such materialist science indoctrination texts are readily available in schools. What's next? handing out guns at the door?

3-0 out of 5 stars fine, but not enough detail
i got this book for my then-3yo daughter, who asked a ton about how germs work and how our bodies fight them. it was "kinda" enough for her, but then we got cell wars, and that is really a fantastic book. where this book can be hand-wavy, that one is much more detailed and really left her feeling like she understood what was happening in her body. she's 4 now and still rattles off information from cell wars, but we haven't read this book but once or twice since we got the other. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant teaching guide
Considering the very few non-scholarly sources available, HIV: The First Year is extremely user friendly and informative guide from which to teach. As an advanced paramedic instructor for a third-party provider, I found the recent information on drug regimens and the infectious process invaluable. Relatively inexpensive, HIV: The First Year should be required reading for any pre-hospital or hospital clinician in close contact with HIV/AIDS patients.

2-0 out of 5 stars Author has a major conflict of interest
I got this thinking it would be helpful in my job as a HIV Case Manager, was I wrong. The author has a major conflict of interest with the pharmaceutical industry and it skews his viewpoints tremendously to the detriment of the patient. The only reason I rate this at 2 stars is it is good at approaching the emotional and psychological aspects of being newly diagnosed and the stigma associated with it.Avoid any of the chapters dealing with medical treatment!

Books on Health:Smart Approach to H.I.V.
(December 9, 2003)

It is hard to be optimistic about an incurable disease, but the author of this supportive resource, a writer who has had H.I.V. for 25 years, manages to do it. "Now that I'm healthy," he writes, "I'm far more worried about getting in a car accident on the Los Angeles Freeway than I am about getting sick from H.I.V."

Mr. Grodeck, an online editor for the RAND Corporation, guides readers through the first seven days after diagnosis, the next three weeks, and the rest of the year.

Combining the human element with essential information about treatment options, choosing the right doctors, the importance of diet and exercise, holistic alternatives and sex, the book transforms a complex disease into one that can be understood and managed.

In his discussion of treatment options, Mr. Grodeck takes a level-headed approach.

While noting that the new generation of medicines, taken together in various combinations, can slow or even halt the virus, he cautions that so-called alternative therapies do not improve the course of H.I.V. and that some are dangerous and can make the infection worse.

"If you like gambling," he writes, "you'll love herbal medicine. Most herbal or plant-based medicines haven't been properly tested, so they are risky." Moreover, he says, people taking prescription drugs should "be careful about taking herbs and supplements."

"Herbs and supplements do not work for treating H.I.V.," Mr. Grodeck concludes, "but some forms of alternative medicine help with symptoms of anxiety and depression." ... Read more

Product Description
Old-World Spotted Fevers: Global Status is one in a series of GIDEON e-books which summarize the status of individual infectious diseases, in every country of the world. Data are based on the GIDEON database (www.gideononline.com) which relies on standard text books, peer-review journals, Health Ministry reports and ProMED, supplemented by an ongoing search of the medical literature.

Chapters are arranged alphabetically, by country name. Each section is divided into five subsections.
1. Descriptive epidemiology
2. Summary of clinical features
3. Global status of the disease
4. Status of the disease in a specific country
5. References

There are 347 generic infectious diseases in the world today. Many of these are universally distributed, with little published data regarding their status in specific countries.
Although other diseases are not endemic to given countries, data have been reported concerning imported infection, acquisition by expatriates or other context. All such literature will be included.

Old-World Spotted Fevers: Global Status includes separate sections on African tick bite fever, Astrakhan fever, Israeli spotted fever, Rickettsia sibirica mongolotimonae infection, Spotted fevers - Old World, and Rickettsialpox.

The availability and quality of literature regarding specific infectious diseases vary from country to country. As such, you may find that many of the sections in this book are limited to a general discussion of the disease itself, with data regarding only a few countries.

This is a book about the geography and epidemiology of Infection.
Comprehensive and up-to-date information regarding the causes,
diagnosis and treatment of each disease is available in the GIDEON
database. Many of the diseases are generic. For example, such
designations as Viral meningitis and Equine encephalitis include a
number of individual diseases. These appear under the subheading,
Synonyms, listed after each disease.

Product Description
Choices, by Margaret Berger Morse, tells the moving storyof how her own daughter, Torrey, survivd an aggressive form of cancerrarely found in children.

In her eighth year, Torrey began receiving the best treatmentconventional medicine could offer for her illness. This treatment didnot offer a long range prognosis of life or a good quality of livingthrough it.The author and her husband made an agonizing choice tochange treatment. The choice was Immuno-Augmentative Therapy, analmost unknown alternative method of treating cancer.

In the midst of this trial the author realized "that life is ajourney, and this journey is toward God."The family learned thattrust in God and knowledge of his love are essential.

This is a true story of an ordinary family's triumph over a fatalillness, and of love over fear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars real-life inspiration
CHOICES tells a down-to-earth inspirational story and provides an eye opening education, as well.As a mother of two small children, I found myself thinking it would be as difficult to see my children endure chemotherapy or radiation cancer treatment as it would the disease. The parents in this story made the difficult and risky decision to stop commonly prescribed treatments, then chose an alternative therapy. It was new and virtually unaccepted in this country, but it made sense. The therapy, called IAT, was easy, non-toxic, and treated the root of the disease; the weak immune system.Anyone who has cancer or who knows someone with cancer should read this book and learn that there are other treatments available for this disease. The faith and courage of this family made this book more than a cancer treatment text.It made me think about something that could happen to anyone in our family.

4-0 out of 5 stars From one of Torrey's doctors
At the time that Torrey was diagnosed, patients with her form of lymphoma received a lengthy course of chemotherapy. About three months into treatment, Torrey's parents chose to stop chemotherapy and take her to the Bahamas for alternative medical treatment. They also continued to pray for her healing. Several years after Torrey started her journey, clinical trials of the type of chemo she received demonstrated that a child with Torrey's stage of disease needed no more than three months of treatment.

Did the short course of chemo cure Torrey? Or Dr. Burton's treatment? Or was it divine intervention? I'll vote for #1 and #3, including the divine wisdom given a doctor to allow the Morses' to discontinue Torrey's medical treatment against the medical wisdom of the day. At that same era in history, colleagues at a nearby hospital were taking parents to court for stopping chemotherapy in favor of Laetrile for a child.

Today I can no more endorse Dr. Burton's immunoaugmentive treatment than I could after careful study twenty-odd years ago. But I've learned not to reject alternative/complementary out of hand. Instead I've chosen to investigate the evidence that a particular regimen is useful or at least harmless. It is far better to open up communication between patient and doctor rather than letting a wall build up between you.

"Choices" is yet another lesson that we can live through the same set of historical events and yet see it and interpret events in very different ways. Clearly, the most important thing is not interpretation but that today Torrey is a beautiful and healthy young woman and her mother had I have become friends. Sometimes mothers just KNOW things. It's well worth reading their story to ponder how you are going to write your own story and talk to your own doctor--and your God.

5-0 out of 5 stars What can I do?
This book was helpful to several friends who had cancer and did not know where to turn when the doctor said chemo was the only way to go.Pneumonia is not a better way to go when chemo breaks down the immune system. This book gives alternate choices. It is short. It is easy to read.It gives names and phone numbers andinformation on how to find aternative treatment. Don't give up! READ THIS BOOK!Have your friends buy it, read it and keep it for reference. It is not too late. You can call IAT.You can discuss your type of cancer. You can fax your records.DO IT NOW! ... Read more

Product Description
This is a collection of investigative laboratory experiments designed for the advanced undergraduate and the first- or second-year graduate student. In the first of its three major sections, neurons are studied as individual cells, including topics such as intracellular recording, immunocytochemistry, and HPLC. The second section studies neurons as forming connections, with experiments on tract tracing, information coding, and LTP, and the third section looks at neurons as co-ordinators of behaviour, through approaches such as pharmacology, lesioning, and ethology. The fourth and final section focuses on techniques applicable to several experiments in the collection, including electrophysiological recording, surgery, anaesthetics, and staining methods. The experiments are designed to introduce students to the techniques used in neuroscience research laboratories. They have been tested and should be easily integrated into existing neuroscience courses of any length or emphasis. ... Read more

Product Description

Workable Sisterhood is an empirical look at sixteen HIV-positive women who have a history of drug use, conflict with the law, or a history of working in the sex trade. What makes their experience with the HIV/AIDS virus and their political participation different from their counterparts of people with HIV? Michele Tracy Berger argues that it is the influence of a phenomenon she labels "intersectional stigma," a complex process by which women of color, already experiencing race, class, and gender oppression, are also labeled, judged, and given inferior treatment because of their status as drug users, sex workers, and HIV-positive women.

The work explores the barriers of stigma in relation to political participation, and demonstrates how stigma can be effectively challenged and redirected.

The majority of the women in Berger's book are women of color, in particular African Americans and Latinas. The study elaborates the process by which these women have become conscious of their social position as HIV-positive and politically active as activists, advocates, or helpers. She builds a picture of community-based political participation that challenges popular, medical, and scholarly representations of "crack addicted prostitutes" and HIV-positive women as social problems or victims, rather than as agents of social change. Berger argues that the women's development of a political identity is directly related to a process called "life reconstruction." This process includes substance- abuse treatment, the recognition of gender as a salient factor in their lives, and the use of nontraditional political resources. ... Read more
