Product Description

As we enter the new millennium, promoting sound mental health and positive behavior of adolescents has undeniably taken on greater significance than ever before. To that end, more and more research is confirming what many have suspected for years: environment and community surroundings have a major affect on an adolescent’s well-being and overall mental health. And because no single causal agent triggers teenage pathology—and no one-size-fits-all treatment is available—the Handbook of Adolescent Behavior Problems offers a comprehensive and integrative biopsychosocial approach to effective practice.

This volume examines not only the psychological and genetic factors underlying dysfunction, it also explores the critical roles that family members, peers, and the larger community play in an adolescent’s life. It offers current interdisciplinary perspectives on adolescent development, both functional and pathological, and provides coverage that is clear, accessible, and practical on such topics as:

  • Major disorders, including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, ADHD, PTSD, developmental delays, and conduct disorders.
  • Behavior problems, such as substance abuse, sexual offenses, teen pregnancy, school failure, gambling, and gang violence.
  • Best practices, reviewing what works (i.e., interventions that have been rigorously validated), what might work (i.e., those in need of further study), and what doesn’t work.
  • Residential interventions as well as community treatment.
  • Risk and resiliency factors.
  • Ongoing and emerging pharmaceutical issues.

Each chapter focuses on a specific behavior or disorder and is formatted to help readers quickly locate needed information.

The Handbook of Adolescent Behavior Problems provides a solid foundation for understanding the adolescent experience and the influence of the family and community as well as much-needed information on the development of evidence-based practices. It is designed to be a one-stop reference for anyone working with adolescents—developmental psychologists, clinical and school psychologists, and education specialists as well as for graduate students in these areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This book was very informative and gave answers I was searching for.I liked the "first person" format. It made it easier to relate to the problems the author had while growing up.Excellent Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Insight
As the parents of a wonderful child who is being treated for a chemical imbalance in her brain that has been recently diagnosed (after years of miss diagnosis) as bipolar, we have found that this book has given us more insight into the illness than any other book we have read to date (which is quite a few). This is NOT a reference book with general advice on treating the condition, but a single person's experience with it.While his experiences are not the same as ours, this telling is very vivid and understandable, and he pulls no punches while not getting preachy. He brings up many of the issues that face this illness including the impacts it has on friendships, lifestyle, how certain terminology in our society can affect the person struggling with these issues. The book is a short easy read that touches on many aspects of the treatments but not as a reference but more as an explanation. His use of humor to ease some of the heavy parts is excellent, and the book has become a wonderful way to open dialog with all members of our family. We have purchased a number of copies of the book and are sharing them with others.THANK YOU Patrick Jamieson. You have given us both the focus of seriousness of the condition as well as hope that our wonderful child can live a full and wonderful life.

5-0 out of 5 stars He is me, I am him
This book shows me personally. Living with bipolar, I formed a connection. With humor, yet poignant truth this book clearly depicts inner turmoil and shame experienced. His constant denial of a psychological diagnosis was the lack of education of society during his upbringing; where brain based chemical imbalances defined you "crazy" and "dangerous." The book's complete honesty using layman terms can depict the two unpredictable uproars of "mass destruction." Where mania and depression play tug a war inside a solitary body. GOOD READ.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
I was very dissapointed with this book. Fortuantely I bought it through marketplace and didn't spend too much on it. The book was a waste of my time. Also the book is deceptive, it sates that it is told from the reference of a teen, but it is told from the reference of an adult who, at that, mentions more of medication and treatment. Not more that 30 pages are towards his experience in a psych wards as a teen. It also looks more like a pamphlet than a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars well written and interesting....
This book is a well-written and interesting first person account of the coming of age of a teenager with bipolar disorder. It is the best book I've seen that describes what what mania and depression feels like.It discusses all the pertinent topics, drugs, depression, mania, suicidal feelings and hospitalization, including why one would be hospitalized and what it is like being in hospital. The author talks about all these things as he has experienced them, which is the chief strength of the book.I would recommend this book for anyone who is bipolar and for the family and friends of people who are bipolar. It is very well done. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding is a two way street!
This book sets the stage for any family to begin and understand this terrible disorder that afflicts so many of our young teens and their families. Not only do you, the reader, learn about what causes and treatments that are available to you and loved ones. But, you learn how to go about understanding what triggers episodes and how to help cope with the life piercing stresses that accompanies Bi Polar disorder. I could goon and on. But I believe once you have read this book you too, you will think that the authors are directly speaking about your own personal challenges. Only the names are different.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teen or Bipolar
It is very hard to tell what is normal teen craziness and bipolar unease. There are still areas that are grey and as a parent you have to trust your gut feelings. Bottom line dealing with a teen or two teens with bipolar is not easy no matter what you read. Books just make you feel a bit less crazy! To know that others understand and to get some insight helps. ... Read more

Product Description
When a child or adolescent is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, it’s hard for his or her parents to know exactly what to do. What constitutes an effective therapeutic approach to help their bipolar child navigate childhood and adolescence? In this book, a psychiatrist and a psychologist, both specializing in mood disorders, offer a comprehensive overview of the available treatment options and most effective parenting strategies for dealing with this serious condition.

In addition to a thorough explanation of the often necessary medical treatments for bipolar disorder, the book also details the importance of emotional regulation in bipolar children. Techniques for dealing with displays of rage, anger, and irritability in children are covered. The book also addresses sleep deprivation, one of the most common symptoms of childhood bipolar disorder, and the issues young people with bipolar disorder face in school. Subjects of particular interest to parents of older children and adolescents are covered, such as substance abuse, eating disorders, violence, and suicide. All of this information is complemented by advice on parental self-care and integrating the care of the bipolar child with the needs of the rest of the family. ... Read more

Haven't begun reading - but it is the next book I plan to read regarding my child's situation - I believe it will be another good resource for a parent seeking information regarding the bi-polar teen - and answer questions one may have - DH

5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting a Bipolar Child
The strength of this book is its practical applications. The interactions of a typical family are contrasted with a family with Bipolar kids. Reasons are given for why the interactions do not work. Then, it gives concrete ways that do work, such as no eye contact during times when a child is denied a request and is becoming argumentative. Also, it talks about how the role of a parent of a BD kid is different. Chapter 11 is all about irritability, a topic any parent of a BD kid can relate to. There is also a chapter on sleep issues. Basics related to diagnosis, medicine, school issues, symptoms, etc are also addressed. Everything is written in simple layman's terms that are easy to understand. Changing family dynamics is very difficult, so I keep my copy close by, so I can refer to it. As a parent of 2 newly diagnosed BD kids, if I could pick only one book to reference, this would be the one!

3-0 out of 5 stars first look
I haven't finished the book yet, the beginning has to do with diagnosis, and behaviors your child may be experiencing. It is somewhat clinical, but may provide confirmation of what you may have been told by a physician. I am hoping the rest of the book contains more practical advice for day to day coping. Overall, it has been somewhat helpful so far.

1-0 out of 5 stars doubtful value
I find it difficult to take anything Gianni Faedda says about the subject seriously, since, when I was briefly his patient, he incorrectly diagnosed me with bipolar disorder, a diagnosis which somehow never came up, after 15 years of psychiatry (1991-2005), until I entered his office. He prescribed lithium, which had no effect on me whatsoever. Furthermore, when I had a rather standard OCD repetitive motion attack during a session, to which I have been subject for many years, Faedda failed to recognize it for what it was, and later declared, in a phone conversation, that I was a malingerer and that he didn't believe me about a personal control issue I was having. He told me he didn't like me personally, and it was interfering with his treatment. Then he called my lawyer and caused me some trouble, when I had asked for his help, and after that I'd had enough of him, I no longer trusted him, I just fired him. And good riddance. There had been warning signs throughout--odd space control issues, where he would insist you take certain paths when you walked in his office, stuff like that. I should have paid more attention.

Frankly, from personal experience, he strikes me as a man with a hammer to whom everything looks like a nail. I wouldn't trust him with my mental health treatment, and haven't since. I certainly wouldn't trust him with my children's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive!
I have been parenting bipolar children for 25 years. My youngest is now 5. I wish this book had been available when I was raising my oldest. There are many good books on BP in children (and I have most of them), but if I could only have one, this would be the one. The section on the importance of sleep habits was worth the price of the book all by itself. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is intended to make everyone aware of how Bipolar Disorder, otherwise known as Manic Depressive Illness, especially in its atypical forms, is presently misunderstood and misdiagnosed as ADHD, Conduct Disorder, and other related behavioral disorders. It is also intended to make professionals and others who deal with troubled children become competent in identifying this serious and pervasive illness in children and adolescents and of being help to them.

A brief discussion of the etiology and treatment available for this illness and the social ramifications of this illness and its misdiagnosis in children are also included.

The book would be very valuable for psychiatrists, child psychiatrists, other professionals in the mental health fields, and students and professionals interested in child psychiatry and mental health of children.

2-0 out of 5 stars A little biased
An interesting read; however, the same thing is said over and over and over and over (get the idea?)He does make interesting points -- that I agree with about the disorder; but, this could have been said in a much more concise way.Tooooooooo much repetition.Save your $$.Don't bother.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Definite MUST read - If your child has behavioral problems!
This book is great at explaining the differences between ADHD, and Child-Onset Bipolar disorders. It explains the different types of Child-Onset bipolar also.My son exhibits the Atypical Bipolar, which comes out in more aggressive, easily frustrated behaviors vs. typical manic / depressive stages.Bipolar in children is much different, than bipolar in adults!!!This book explains it so well, and I highly recommend it!! I highlighted so much of the book, and then took it to the doctor! Give it to the grandparents to read, your spouse, (your ex ;) and anyone who has a close relationship with your child.I have read several books on bipolar disorder in children... and this one is one of the best!!

I hope it helps many others. PLEASE read this book if you know any child that is "out of control" it might be BP.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highlights important info
It is so important for parents to understand that the co-morbidity rate between ADHD and Bipolar Disorder is extremely high. Not only can one be mistaken for the other, but they have an extremely high frequency of occuring together. This book does a good job of helping parents identify what could be wrong with their children.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful!
This book answered all my questions! Answered questions I wouldn't have thought to ask! Gave ideas and tips of things to ask doctors about! Very helpful.I didn't feel the need to look any further!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a practical and informative guide.
I bought this book to help me handle my child who was actually not diagnosed with bipolar, but rather with asperger disorder + mood disorder not defined (one day his diagnose might be changed to bipolar).
I bought this book with the idea that the same or identical stuff that works for the everyday struggle (not medical) with bipolar kids should work for any severe mood disorder, and indeed I found it to be an excellent guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kindle Edition, less than perfect
This book is an excellent resource for parents of bipolar kids.If it had only been available when I was raising my granddaughter, both of us would have been spared a lot of grief. It is a must read for parents whose children are being labeled as ADD/ADHD by the schools and encouraged (if not required) to drug the kids with Ritalin.Luckily, I stood my ground about the Ritalin, but every school she attended subtly accused me of being a poor parent for not caving in to their recommendations. They ignored at least two evaluations showing no sign of ADD/ADHD.

My only objection to the Kindle edition is that the checklists in the appendices apparently cannot be enlarged. They would be very helpful -- if I could see them clearly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic resource for parents of bipolar kids
Dr. Pavuluri's book is the #1 resource I will go to when I have questions about anything related to bipolar disorder in kids.My daughter, now 13, was diagnosed with bipolar 2years ago. Anyone dealing with this knows the confusion, frustration, heart break, exhaustion, etc. that goes hand in hand with this disorder.
Thankfully, Dr. Pavuluri has gifted us with an easy to read, encouraging, hopeful, and realistic guide to help parents navigate thru the difficult times as well as take joy in the special and unique children that we have been blessed with. Dr. Pavuluri's years of experience as director of the bipolar clinic at UIC in Chicago is evident in the wealth of information and expertise that she presents in this book. For me, personally, her chapter on medications , their descriptions, usage, dosage, etc. has been an enormous help.I feel confident knowing that she has years of experience using these medications with kids, and she clearly explains the pros and cons of each medication used in treating bipolar in kids.
You can not go wrong in purchasing this book .Keep it on your shelf and refer to it often.
Thank you Dr. Pavuluri for your book and all the help that you offer to parents ofchildren diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Bipolar Kid Book Available!
I've got a library full of books about bipolar in children, but this is now my favorite and the first one I consult when questions arise. When I read this book for the first time, I immediately realized that Dr. Pavluri understands, better than anyone else I've encountered, what it is like to live with and love a child who suffers from early-onset bipolar disorder. Her commitment, compassion and genius really come through. In particular, I found that the book contains lots of specifics-- e.g., a treatment algorithmand specific examples of how and when to talk to (or not talk to) your child. She clearly understands the difficulty that many of us have getting our friends and family to understand and support our efforts on behalf of our children. In fact, I have prepared an information sheet for such people, which includes several excerpts from the book related to discipline ("Johnny never has any problems when he's with me. You just need to show him who's in charge.") and variable symptom presentation ("If she can keep it together at school, then she can keep it together at home.") This book is so fabulous that it makes me wish we lived in Chicago and could work with Dr. Pavluri in person. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Well-Written Book about Bipolar Disorder
The authors, both associated with the counseling center at the University of Virginia, have written a very complete, yet easy-to-read volume about biploar disorder. The book takes the reader from diagnosis to discussing the future that life holds for those with bipolar disorder.Additionally, there are chapters written about any topic a patient with BP would want to have answered.

Although this book's intended audience is for young adults and college students, I found the information in it was very helpful for me, too - and I'm 52!I enjoyed the way the authors used the language college students use, and I especially appreciated the case studies the authors use to illustrate the points they want to make. It's helpful to see how other people in the same situation have dealt with bipolar disorder.

If you are wondering if this book would help you understand bipolar disorder and assist you or a loved one face this diagnosis, I highly recommend that you order this book. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing!
Hands down, the best resource I've found for young adults dealing with bipolar disorder.I am 24 and was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder a few years ago. While I have been through many of the initial shocks and have learned the hard way that I need to be on a schedule (many of the things Facing Bipolar addresses), this book provided me with a sense of relief I didn't have before. Before reading this book, I felt alone. I don't know anyone my age or even close to it that struggles with mental health to the same extent.I've read half a dozen books about being bipolar and this is the one that really hit home. Facing Bipolar is a much needed resource for young adults dealing with bipolar disorder for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Around for Basic Information on Bipolar!
Facing Bipolar gives straightforward information on how Bipolar works, what to do to manage it and what to expect. It isn't full of technical medical study information, but rather information that anyone, whether a "Young Adult" or "Adult" can use.I think I have read them all, this was the best.In fact, I recommended it to a therapist friend who works with the local schools and they went out and got two copies for the special ed area to read themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I found this book to be incredibly helpful.I am a student with bipolar disorder and have read more works on the disorder than I can count. This one stands out in particular for its ability to connect on a young adult's level and provide a detailed guide to how best to stay healthy.I highly recommend this work for anyone facing bipolar disorder. ...
