4-0 out of 5 stars practical and handy reference guide
I like the writing and presentation in this book. Very clear and easy to read. Quick to skim for the information you need to understand how to manage life with a bipolar disorder diagnosis. Plus, I find it helpful (and less alarming) as it doesn't have so many of those extreme wild stories about how people's behavior during manic or depressive episodes. ... Read more

    Product Description

When Marya Hornbacher published her first book, Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia, she did not yet have the piece of shattering knowledge that would finally make sense of the chaos of her life. At age twenty-four, Hornbacher was diagnosed with Type I rapid-cycle bipolar, the most severe form of bipolar disorder.

In Madness, Hornbacher tells her new story. Through scenes of astonishing visceral and emotional power, she takes us inside her own desperate attempts to counteract violently careening mood swings by self-starvation, substance abuse, numbing sex, and self-mutilation. How Hornbacher fights her way up from a madness that all but destroys her, and what it is like to live in a difficult and sometimes beautiful life and marriage—where bipolar always beckons—is at the center of this brave and heart-stopping memoir.

Millions of people in America today are struggling with a variety of disorders that may disguise their bipolar disease. Marya Hornbacher's fiercely self-aware portrait revolutionizes our understanding of this all-too-common, all-too-misunderstood disorder.

    5-0 out of 5 stars it's poetry...
...poetry in the sense that it gets down to the core of the thing, the grip of the feelings, the clawing for a bit of insight on a mental illness, the marvels/lesser-evils of meds, and the incredible struggle to maintain relationships.Marya Hornbacher really puts it down.A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best descriptions of manic depression I've ever read
Ms. Hornbacher's account of years spent dealing with manic-depression is brilliantly realized and, as others have pointed out, totally raw. For those who want a better, clearer understanding of this illness than perhaps they have now, this book is a must.It is so very prevalent in our society and yet so little understood; books like this one should help immensely.I hope she can find some peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books.
I'm now reading this for the third time.I could relate to her childhood of BiPolar so well when I originally read it, it really helped me cope with my own diagnosis. Her writing is fluid and full of passion, truth, and more truth. It's a real eye-opener for someone who has no idea what BiPolar is about.I would recommend this book to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Individuals who experience Bipolar Disorder as real People
This is one of the few current memoirs of individual who experiences Bipolar Disorder which presents the character as a full-formed complex person to whom one can relate. So manyy of these recent books focus on sensationalism and -"freakshow victimology."

This story has harrowing details and does not pull punches about the disease, but it is finally a reaffirming story written for understanding rather than titilation. Well-written, articulate and entertaining, it is also insightful and shows a different invidual who experiences Bipolar Disorder than we usually find in these books.

I recommend it to individuals who are first diagnosed or coming to terms with their illness and others who would like to gain a better ubnderstanding. Not every Bipolar experience is the same, and this book demonstrates that fact.

Finally, a likeable person who experience bipolar disorder, rather than a two-dimentional thrill seeker and arrogant munipulators who are usually presented.

I highly recommend this book to the entire community, especial behavioral health professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Madness: A Bipolar Life
I was looking for a book that gave realife experiences of a Bipolar person. Also I wanted to get ideas of how to deal with the bipolar person.By reading this particular book I gained an insight into the life of a bipolar person. She shared many experiences, how she felt, how people dealt with her, how she reacted to the treatment and medications, feelings she experienced, and how society reacts to this type of person.I would recommend this book for others that need information on how to deal with such a life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LIVING WITH BI-POLAR
Wish I had read this book 40 years ago!Good description of what a bi-polar person goes thru.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good general coverage - helpful
I was diagnosed with Bipolar last year (but I'm sure I've had it for many years) and had only read up on the net about it thus far. I found this book easy to read and very informative. I also found it helpful in terms of getting me to think about my triggers, warning signs and what I can do to stay well. I would recommend it to others who have been recently diagnosed. I will say that I didn't absolutely love the book - I felt the definitions of bipolar given to the mild end of the disorder spectrum were too inclusive/broad and I thought the seductive allure of mania was glossed over a bit. I also thought there was a bit too much cognitive behaviour therapy stuff in there - but I know it is highly regarded so who am I to argue? All in all, however, I thought it was a good book, I may even read it again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Accurate & Up To Date
This book has solid information about Bipolar disorder & even discusses many of its subtypes: bipolar spectrum & mixed symptoms. We now know that bipolar disorder effects more people than previously thought & up to 3% of the general population is effected. An amazing amount of research is now uncovering the frequent misdiagnosis of bipolar as unipolar depression & delays to correct diagnosis can take up to 10 years. That's 10 years spent with untreated or poorly treated symptoms & suffering. This book not only discusses the importance of medication as the cornerstone of treatment, but also discusses how making life-style changes plays a crucial role in managing the illness.
As a private practice psychiatrist, I have nothing invested in this book except getting my patients better. I have frequently referred them to this book. Maybe one day, I'll write my own, but until then, I am grateful for these resources.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccuracy in product description
I haven't read this book. But the product description says "bipolar disorder affects more than half of those suffering from depression".This is simply not true.Is this a way somehow to sell more books?

You have to wonder about the accuracy of the facts in the book if the product description contains such a fundamental error about the disease.

    Product Description
An empathetic guide to recognizing and overcoming the chronic mood disorder Bipolar II, a rapidly increasing DSM diagnosis affecting over 9 million Americans.

Bipolar II is a form of bipolar disorder in which a person, when in a manic cycle, is crippled by anxiety, irritability, and highs just intense enough to be embarrassing.Instead of being the life of the party, someone with Bipolar II might be too nervous to go to the party at all. And, unlike the Bipolar I sufferer who may attempt suicide in a depressive cycle, the Bipolar II might be incapacitated by guilt over an imaginary crime.

In Less than Crazy, health writer and Bipolar II sufferer Karla Dougherty shares her story, presenting the first patient-expert's guide to recognizing and living well with this condition. Covering both adults and children, this accessible, all-in-one resource includes information on diagnosis, conditions that may mimic Bipolar II, and treatments. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great bipolar II book
This is the only book I've ever read that focused on type 2 bipolar. I really liked it. Very informative.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book CONFUSES an already difficult diagnosis
As one who has bipolar disorder, I am always looking for books to help me and my family better understand this mood disorder. This book promised same, but instead of doing such, it further confused the diagnoses of I and II.This work concentrated on finding out if you're a "little" or a "lot" bipolar. As one who has suffered many years with this disorder, I could care less about this.I just wanted help understanding as to better manage bipolar.I would not recommend this book to anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, but not very informative.
After being diagnosed with Bipolar II in March of 2009 I wanted to read more about it before proceeding with treatment. Less Than Crazy is one of the books I ordered and overall I got very little out of it. Dougherty's coverage of Bipolar II is very broad but an inch deep. The book is very easy to read, but that comes at the expense of depth. The substance of the book is so general that you'll come away knowing more about Bipolar II from reading Wikipedia.

First off, the author does a VERY poor job distinguishing Bipolar I from Bipolar II.

Second, she makes an incorrect claim that Bipolar II is a "milder" or "watered down" version of Bipolar I. This is an INCORRECT statement unsupported by psychiatry literature and doctors themselves. Bipolar II is a different disorder that has some commonality with Bipolar I but has a range of symptoms unique to Bipolar II. There are many studies that suggest that suicide rate with Bipolar II is equal or higher to that of Bipolar I, so there is nothing mild about this illness.

Third, the author basically glosses over the symptoms of Bipolar II, such as the deepest depression or the "mixed states," that torture so many of us Bipolar II patients.

I found the personal stories she includes in the book too generic to relate to because they could describe people with a hundred other ailments, people having a tough moment in life, or just lousy personality. I have no more insight into what other people with Bipolar II go through after reading something like "Joe had an inflated sense of entitlement" or "Jane had a hard time getting out of bed."

For readers completely unfamiliar with Bipolar II this may be an OK first read, but this is definitely NOT the book to rely upon if you are looking to truly understand Bipolar II.

1-0 out of 5 stars An honest review
Im an RN and MHN and I also have Bipolar II. I was expecting something more considering the Authors stated experience but she managed to get a few things very wrong. She also limits the symptoms of bipolar and personalises it. Yes she has bipolar and she has had a hard life. But the biggest mistake in this book is the false claim that bipolar II depression is less than Bipolar 1 depression which it clearly isnt. I could quote a library of books on this, but this is an informal review so I wont. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is initially interested in bipolar, but only if they want another perspective and an additional book for their collection. She could have done so much better, and it also caused me to question the MD who supposedly edited this book. She quotes people that contractict her outright which I also found amusing. To the author, please read more widely and dont be in such a rush to publish "something".

5-0 out of 5 stars I just read my life story!
I couldn't put this book down once I realized Dougherty was describing my own painful 20 year struggle with undiagnosed Bipolar II...and then offered solutions.Dougherty takes a weighty scary topic and makes it easy to digest with her friendly and inviting writing style. She has BPII and is a well seasoned medical writer. What I found most helpful were; 1)the anecdotes from a wide variety of patients, 2)the interesting (yes, interesting) descriptions of brain functioning, 3)the diagnostic "tests" you can take, and (most importantly) 4) how she gave me hope I can have a happy and productive life.

A comment on the diagnostic testing, I found them to be KEY.You can take 3 or 4 quizes to see if the symptoms resonate and apply to you. What a relief to see data on a piece of paper that makes me feel I've found the right pidgeon hole for my problem!I've also learned as a patient I need to be in the driver's seat and take action outside the doctor's office to help treat my disease. Of course, I'll share the results with my psychiatrist...and save time and $$ in therapy bills in the process.

Sections include:Part 1)Do I have Bipolar II--and How Does It Affect My Life? Part 2)Why Do I have Bipolar II? Part 3)How is Bipolar II Treated--and How Can I Live Happily?

*****This is a great book to read if you have suffered from depression that has NOT been satisfactorily helped by medication and therapy. You will learn, you may actually have BPII.Dougherty points out that if you were diagnosed with depression more than 7 to 10 years ago there is a 40% you were misdiagnosed.Recent discoveries in brain functioning have altered the picture.

The main negative of the book is the introduction is misleading (which led to the somewhat misleading Editorial Review summary above.)Dougherty describes her OWN struggle with Bipolar II and doesn't clearly state that there are variations. So you may toss the book aside because you don't immediately see yourself...but keep reading!Obviously, the "1 *" reviewer, who admitted she skimmed the book, did just that.

For example, in the intro Dougherty talked about how in a hypomanic state she's a wall flower, well I become the life of the party.Or how in a depressive state she has felt guilty over an "imagined crime" an issue I've never confronted. She also doesn't point out until later in the book that suicide fantasys are not just limited to Bipolar I but also found, sometimes, among BP II sufferers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Bipolar Strong" describes it all. Not to be missed.
"Bipolar Strong" is a long awaited, long overdue, compassionate look at Bipolar Disorder as it affects young people and those who care deeply for them. Written in plain language, yet referenced by the most substantive professional and medical groups, as well as the bipolar youth themselves, this is really a 360-degree look at the difficulties and truly effective solutions now available. The author has done a great work through years of dedicated effort in de-mystifying the disorder, and differentiating between others we hear about so often in the media, such as ADD ADHD,major depression, and more. Of course, this is not intended as a substitute for seeking competent and caring physicians and counselors, but during stressful times, such as the holidays, the disorder may be 'triggered', and we are once again confused, sad, hurt, or sometimes even frightened by the depressed or manic/irritable behavior that we are unable to control. "Bipolar Strong" shows how these issues, properly addressed, can become great assets. Definitely worth a read, this author shows genuine respect and provides real hope for people who suffer this disorder, and those around them. Not to be missed. Through education, we find solutions in "Bipolar Strong".

5-0 out of 5 stars good read
This is awesome that someone is finally thinking of listening to young people tell about their experience and wisdom about their own health. and also to adults looking back at their youthful struggles with mood disorders and depression, sharing what they've learned.I also loved the practical clear information about identifying different disorders. I would recommend this book to all teens and people in twenties and thirties, so they might understand so many of their peers that struggle with these challenges. As well as anyone who has ever felt depressed, or who actually has a diagnosed mood disorder of any kind. It has a wealth of helpful tips and hearty support to offer.

Kassi Visage-Lowe was born Kassi Lee Schlangen in Spokane, Washington, January 9, 1959. She was happy, excited about life, a little girl with promise for the future. I found this book to be absolutely amazing.I kept finding myself with my mouth hanging open in shock at the fact that what was being written about in the book was EXACTLY what it is like to live in my house.Truly an amazing read.It is an absolute must read for families that deal with this issue. There is a huge feeling of "at least I am no longer alone in this".

I found the scientific information to be interesting and very useful.I have used this to help explain bipolar to my youngest son (10 years old). His older brother is the one with the disease, but it is the family who suffers from it.

After reading it I bought multiple copies to send to my mother and sisters so that they can understand what life is like for my oldest son.

This is a must read for anyone who has a child with this illness, and for teachers, relatives and friends who will be spending a lot of time with them.

I have been extremely pleased with this book - thurs/friday/saturday - I have already read 1/2 way through it - it has great information - a lot of what is in here I have heard from other parents who have the same issues and from her therapist - and a lot of things I hadn't known about the disease - I can't wait to finisht the book - I hope other parents out there that are struggling with (Adolescent Bipolar) especially in the early stage (which is where I am) read this book - It is written on a level that any one can understand - it is on the common persons level - and it is easy reading - If you have a child who has recently been diagnosed with Bipolar (as I have, since the end of March 2010) I highly recommend this book - the Appendix is full of great contact information and where to seek more information - my advise is to get all the information you can and learn from it - This is heartbreaking when it is your own child - I can not recommend this book enough to those of you struggling out there looking, reaching for answers - It hasn't answered all of my questions (not sure anyone can) but it is a great comfort - and the copyright date is 2009 - so the information is fairly current - and the authors are very knowledgeable and compassionate to the reader - please if you are looking for help with Bipolar for your child (mine is 13) purchase this book - you'll be glad you did - I am!! And thank you to the authors of this book - It is greatly appreciated by me and my daughter - We have a long road ahead of us - all we as parents can do is educate ourselves and the ones around us as much as possible - and hope that one day they will find a cure so other children do not have to suffer - DH

    Product Description
Bipolar disorder is more common and deadly than we think it is, and does not look like what we think it looks like. The misconceptions about this illness are prevalent in our culture and even permeate the medical and psychiatric communities. How does bipolar disorder manifest itself? Who are the people who suffer from it? Why are so many patients misdiagnosed?
In The Other Depression, Grieco and Edwards help people understand what life is like for those afflicted with bipolar disorder, what conditions seem to exacerbate it, and how it is diagnosed. Their discussion includes genetic signatures, environmental stresses, and the underpinnings of this disease, along with how it alters the functioning of the brain and how it can be treated. Separate chapters are dedicated to different populations, such as children, adolescents, and the elderly. The authors also introduce resources available to people with bipolar disorder and their families and suggest strategies for coping and getting on with life. Inserted generously throughout the book are case studies and examples of people who have suffered with bipolar disorder, sometimes for decades, before being properly diagnosed. Through these clinical examples, readers come to recognize the effects of the illness and understand treatment options that can provide hope and peace of mind to sufferers and their loved ones.

    Product Description
When a child or adolescent is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, it’s hard for his or her parents to know exactly what to do. What constitutes an effective therapeutic approach to help their bipolar child navigate childhood and adolescence? In this book, a psychiatrist and a psychologist, both specializing in mood disorders, offer a comprehensive overview of the available treatment options and most effective parenting strategies for dealing with this serious condition.

In addition to a thorough explanation of the often necessary medical treatments for bipolar disorder, the book also details the importance of emotional regulation in bipolar children. Techniques for dealing with displays of rage, anger, and irritability in children are covered. The book also addresses sleep deprivation, one of the most common symptoms of childhood bipolar disorder, and the issues young people with bipolar disorder face in school. Subjects of particular interest to parents of older children and adolescents are covered, such as substance abuse, eating disorders, violence, and suicide. All of this information is complemented by advice on parental self-care and integrating the care of the bipolar child with the needs of the rest of the family. ... Read more

Haven't begun reading - but it is the next book I plan to read regarding my child's situation - I believe it will be another good resource for a parent seeking information regarding the bi-polar teen - and answer questions one may have - DH

5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting a Bipolar Child
The strength of this book is its practical applications. The interactions of a typical family are contrasted with a family with Bipolar kids. Reasons are given for why the interactions do not work. Then, it gives concrete ways that do work, such as no eye contact during times when a child is denied a request and is becoming argumentative. Also, it talks about how the role of a parent of a BD kid is different. Chapter 11 is all about irritability, a topic any parent of a BD kid can relate to. There is also a chapter on sleep issues. Basics related to diagnosis, medicine, school issues, symptoms, etc are also addressed. Everything is written in simple layman's terms that are easy to understand. Changing family dynamics is very difficult, so I keep my copy close by, so I can refer to it. As a parent of 2 newly diagnosed BD kids, if I could pick only one book to reference, this would be the one!

3-0 out of 5 stars first look
I haven't finished the book yet, the beginning has to do with diagnosis, and behaviors your child may be experiencing. It is somewhat clinical, but may provide confirmation of what you may have been told by a physician. I am hoping the rest of the book contains more practical advice for day to day coping. Overall, it has been somewhat helpful so far.

1-0 out of 5 stars doubtful value
I find it difficult to take anything Gianni Faedda says about the subject seriously, since, when I was briefly his patient, he incorrectly diagnosed me with bipolar disorder, a diagnosis which somehow never came up, after 15 years of psychiatry (1991-2005), until I entered his office. He prescribed lithium, which had no effect on me whatsoever. Furthermore, when I had a rather standard OCD repetitive motion attack during a session, to which I have been subject for many years, Faedda failed to recognize it for what it was, and later declared, in a phone conversation, that I was a malingerer and that he didn't believe me about a personal control issue I was having. He told me he didn't like me personally, and it was interfering with his treatment. Then he called my lawyer and caused me some trouble, when I had asked for his help, and after that I'd had enough of him, I no longer trusted him, I just fired him. And good riddance. There had been warning signs throughout--odd space control issues, where he would insist you take certain paths when you walked in his office, stuff like that. I should have paid more attention.

Frankly, from personal experience, he strikes me as a man with a hammer to whom everything looks like a nail. I wouldn't trust him with my mental health treatment, and haven't since. I certainly wouldn't trust him with my children's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive!
I have been parenting bipolar children for 25 years. My youngest is now 5. I wish this book had been available when I was raising my oldest. There are many good books on BP in children (and I have most of them), but if I could only have one, this would be the one. The section on the importance of sleep habits was worth the price of the book all by itself. ... Read more

In the chapters of this ebook,I present information regarding common emotional conditions of “neurosis” and the less-common conditions of mental illness referred-to as “psychosis”. It is my intention to help define the differences between these two types of emotional and mental disorders but to also present the differences between common conditions of neurosis that are in the anxiety and depression categories.

Subjects covered include descriptions of major depression, bipolar depression, schizophrenia and different types of major anxiety disorders. Signs, symptoms and diagnosis are discussed, as well as the treatments that are administered for these different types of disorders (i.e. pharmaceutical, psychiatric and natural therapies).

It is my hope that this book will provide a good basic educational resource for readers wishing to learn about identifying and treating mental and emotional disorders.

4-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for a Follow-Up Book
Paul Wider has done such a fine job with this book that he should soon write another. It has been an honor to participate in this project with him as an editor. Wider has provided such a gift to people who struggle and suffer with this disease. His wit and wisdom, as a fellow sufferer, carries a note that sounds thoroughly convincing thoughout this volume. The "Tools" section is especially rewarding. Anyone who cares about someone who deals with depressive illness should read this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Depression and manic Depression -P. Wider
I feel sympathetic toward this author because he is also bipolar and he wrote a book to help others with his best intentions and best resources... however, I found it to be almost childish in its lack of sophistication. I think a young teen or older child would be able to use the book to get started on the road to recovery with bipolar illness. For me, I read the whole book in about 20 minutes. It is full of lists, little drawings and charts and a very personalized and narrow perspective on tools and techniques to help oneself through the ups and downs of the illness. It's not a very good book. In fact, it really is poorly written and lacking in substance. Sorry.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing
This book completely changed my life!I've been in therapy and on medication for depression for about 20 years with no lasting success. It wasn't until I read this book that I realized that I was suffering from bipolar disorder, not simply depression. With the help of this book, therapy, and medication specifically for bipolar, I am a healthy, happy adult now and am so thankful for Dr. Wider.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Good Enough
I bought this book hoping it would give me insight into why I was feeling depressed. But it didn't. It gave pratical advice and just wasn't good enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gaining a REAL Insight to some of your lifetime problems
My father saw an ad in a local newspaper that the author, Paul Wider, was speaking at a nearby Borders bookstore.I listened to his presentation and purchased his book.Having listened to him speak and as he lives nearby,I was able to see him regularly.

For those that can not see him,the book is an excellent restatement of his thoughts and helpful solutions to the entrenched problem of mild depression. Also, as I read the book, I would time and time again see myself.

It is possible that the reader may not be as devoted in his religion as is Mr. Wider. But that should be put aside by the reader as everything else in his work is compelling and worthy of deep thought as to how you might have some of the same issues.

The issue of depression is addressed in a very pragmatic, direct and practical manner.

    Product Description

Manic behavior holds an undeniable fascination in American culture today. It fuels the plots of best-selling novels and the imagery of MTV videos, is acknowledged as the driving force for successful entrepreneurs like Ted Turner, and is celebrated as the source of the creativity of artists like Vincent Van Gogh and movie stars like Robin Williams. Bipolar Expeditions seeks to understand mania's appeal and how it weighs on the lives of Americans diagnosed with manic depression.

Anthropologist Emily Martin guides us into the fascinating and sometimes disturbing worlds of mental-health support groups, mood charts, psychiatric rounds, the pharmaceutical industry, and psychotropic drugs. Charting how these worlds intersect with the wider popular culture, she reveals how people living under the description of bipolar disorder are often denied the status of being fully human, even while contemporary America exhibits a powerful affinity for manic behavior. Mania, Martin shows, has come to be regarded as a distant frontier that invites exploration because it seems to offer fame and profits to pioneers, while depression is imagined as something that should be eliminated altogether with the help of drugs.

Bipolar Expeditions argues that mania and depression have a cultural life outside the confines of diagnosis, that the experiences of people living with bipolar disorder belong fully to the human condition, and that even the most so-called rational everyday practices are intertwined with irrational ones. Martin's own experience with bipolar disorder informs her analysis and lends a personal perspective to this complex story.

As someone experienced with the ups and down of depression and anxiety, I am so grateful for this book. In "Bipolar Expeditions," Martin gives us an honest and unflinching look at the lives people lead with mania and the way depression in general is shaping our world. This work should be read by everyone and anyone affected by mental illness and those looking to understand the drastic shift from 'slow and steady wins the race' to 'last one to the finish line is a rotten egg.'
