Product Description
In a world obsessed with appearance, it is not surprising that body dysmorphic disorder, or BDD -- an emotionally painful obsession with perceived flaws in one's appearance -- has manifested itself as a troubling and relatively common problem for many individuals. In The Broken Mirror, the first and most definitive book on BDD, Dr. Katharine A. Phillips provided a comprehensive manual for patients and their physicians by drawing on years of clinical practice, scientific research, and professional evaluations of over 1,000 patients. Now, in Understanding Body Dysmorphic Disorder: An Essential Guide , the world's leading authority on BDD reaches out to patients, their friends, and their families with this concise and updated handbook.

BDD causes sufferers to be obsessed by perceived flaws in their appearance and may afflict as much as two percent of the population, or nearly five million people. Many sufferers are able to function well in society, but remain secretly obsessed by their "hideous acne" or "horrible nose," sneaking constant peeks at a pocket mirror, or spending hours at a time redoing makeup. Others find their lives disintegrate because of their appearance obsessions. It is not an uncommon disorder, simply a hidden one, since sufferers are often embarrassed to tell even their closest friends about their concerns.

Using stories and interviews to show the many different behaviors and symptoms of BDD, and a quick self-assessment questionnaire, Dr. Phillips guides readers through the basics of the disorder and through the many treatment options that work and don't work. With Understanding Body Dysmorphic Disorder: An Essential Guide, sufferers will find both helpful advice and much needed reassurance in a compact, down-to-earth indispensable book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful with a Difficult Issue
I am a Psychologist and work with BDD clients, and this text is most helpful.I have found it useful to share some of the statistics and life stories that are included in the book.It is amazing how helpful it is for clients to discover they are not alone.

Material is complete and presented in an organized and useful way. The understanding enabled for both client and therapist is one of the main traits of this book. And the author is obviously committed to the betterment/healing of her clients.

One thing that I believe can be very useful is to understand that these clients are bothered by the PROCESS (obsessiveness of thoughts) as much as the CONTENT of the thoughts in this disorder. In addition, they are often more concerned with THEIR perceptions of themselves than they are with the perceptions of others (despite the presentation of the problem). ... This book has a lot of information and helf for anyone dealing with body image issues

5-0 out of 5 stars A Workbook That Actually Works!
I was diagnosed a little over a year ago with BDD.It is still highly unrecognized, even in the mental health field.I was misdiagnosed for years; thus, I received improper treatment.

This workbook really delves into the thought processes of a person who suffers from this exhausting illness. The worksheets and exercises really cause you to challenge the beliefs which have been engrained in your memory for decades.

I would highly recommend this workbook for anyone who is looking to become stronger without the use of narcotics.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last...
As a parent of a BDD sufferer, I was pleased to read through the workbook before presenting it to our family member. If read and followed, it should help with any one in BDD's grip.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good start when not ready to seek help
I've already read this book twice, it's a very good support when I feel overwhelmed by my body obsessions, its best point is that it made me feel that I'm strong enough to gradually change. Everytime I doubt I read some specific passages to put be back on the track.

5-0 out of 5 stars INFORMATIVE
Although I have just started reading the workbook and starting the exercises, it seems like it could help with BDD.I think this would be helpful to those with BDD or a similar condition. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No 'zero star' option...

It's taken me five years to bother to come on Amazon and write a review about this book- that's how bad it is. There are some writers who publish because all their peers in their field are doing so. And to make a tidy profit on a topic which they know isn't that well understood- while they're at it. Katharine A. Phillips is one of those. If there was ever a prime example of vanity publishing- this is it. Nowhere in the 300 pages of fluff and bluff does she provide an explanation for why Body Dysmorphic Disorder occurs. Negative thoughts lead to negative behaviour? People who think they're ugly avoid social situations and have anxiety? Genius!! We really needed a table and diagram to explain what we go through everyday. The book has no substance or backbone. We're supposed to be sold on the strength of the examples provided, which become repetitive and monontonous as the book progresses (or fails to progress). Worst of all however, is the solution that Katharine Phillips proposes: the drugging of patients. Having been on an antidepressant myself for 6 years and had my body and life destroyed by it- I can safely say that these drugs are not only ineffective but dangerous. The scientific community has openly come out and admitted that not much is known about these drugs work and each year more damning reports on the negative and permanent affects (e.g sexual dysfunction even years after stopping) have come out. I think it's extremely irresponsible of Ms. Phillips to be proposing a solution in the form of drugs that she barely knows anything about for a disorder that she clearly knows even less about, if we are to judge by her book. I seriously doubt source of the other positive reviews and highly recommend that you don't buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I enjoyed this book although it was a while back when I read it....a friend with BDD recommended it to me knowing I suffered the same as she did. Great information and an in depth look at a crippling disorder that many laugh at and brush off. Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars a place to begin understanding Body Dysmorphic Disorder
If you are reading a review of this book, you must have heard something about Body Dysmorphic Disorder that caught your attention. My young son was finally diagnosed with Body Dysmorphic Disorder when he was 20 years old.He had been suffering for many years and his suffering had led to very dysfunctional behavior including drug abuse, the inability to go to school, to keep a job, or to cooperate with us enough for him to be able to live at home.He had walked away from drug treatment programs that focused first on the drug abuse and not on the underlying anxiety disorder. We had seen and worked with several different therapists during his life.He was always anxious and shy.No one ever asked any of the questions that would have pointed to the diagnosis of Body Dysmorphic Disorder. He even tried to talk to me about his fears that there was something wrong with different body parts and I had no clue what he was trying to tell me and I just reassured him that "everyone is not perfectly proportional" or that "everyone thinks there is something wrong with their body as they are growing up."Once he was diagnosed, the psychiatrist gave him an article about BDD which included this author's name.My son was able to call and talk with her, which helped him begin to feel he was not alone and not crazy.I purchased this book for him and we both read it.It is true, the book does not outline therapy and is not a form of therapy. We were able to find a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist who specialized in BDD and related disorders. She was helpful, but not the whole answer, either. This is a disorder that causes its sufferers great pain, and its suffering is extremely difficult for other people to understand. My son just turned 21 and he is doing well now.I think this book can be one important part in understanding BDD and searching for your own path to healthy functioning if you or someone you love suffers from BDD.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ANSWER...
I purchased this book 12 yrs. ago when it was first published, and was moved to tears many times while reading it.That copy was read and reread so many times, that I had to purchase another.I am a parent of a BDD sufferer (gender withheld), and have suffered with that family member as the BDD took hold in mid-teens (always thought it was a passing phase then), and for the many years that followed.Dr. Phillips has written a compassionate and understanding book on a subject that had never been brought into the light of today's society.Reading it makes me realize how many others out there suffer as our now middle-aged child has suffered through all these years.Dr. Phillips gives sound advice to those who are spouses, parents, children or friends who are related or connected to a BDD victim. This book offers hope and guidance...a must read for any BDD sufferer and for those who--like me--suffer along with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for a full understanding of BDD
Katharine has provided a most comprehensive resource of body dysmorphic disorder. As a health care practitioner, I found the numerous case studies and anecdotes exceptionally detailed and provided insightful background into the suffering that is BDD.As humans, we all have concerns about body image from time to time, however this book clearly delineates acceptable levels of personal attention with dysfunctional and often debilatating behaviour.I was dissapointed to find the treatment section quite heavily focused on pharmaceutical medications, though there is also strong recommendation for supportive psychotherapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy.I feel this book is intended for health practitioners and non-sufferers to gain a thorough insight into BDD. ... Many people occasionally suffer from a negative body self-image but, for an increasing number of people, this can turn into a more serious preoccupation. One per cent of the population will develop Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a condition characterised by severe preoccupation with a perceived physical defect. Body image problems can cause significant distress and can lead to further problems such as anxiety, eating disorders and social phobia. It has long been recognised that negative body image problems are a factor in the onset and maintenance of many eating disorders. However, they can be successfully treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). 'A Moment Gone' is a collection of short prose by S.Westwood, author of 'Suicide Junkie'. Through short stories, prose and poetry S.Westwood explores his deep thoughts, philosophies and feelings, each piece written at times of emotional confusion and sometimes depression. But along side tales of anguish we also see folktales and flights of whimsical imagination, stories with meanings that could even be suitable for children. Excerpt: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) (previously known as dysmorphophobia is sometimes referred to as body dysmorphia or dysmorphic syndrome) is a (psychological) somatoform disorder in which the affected person is excessively concerned about and preoccupied by a perceived defect in his or her physical features (body image). Depending on the individual case, BDD may either be a somatoform disorder or part of an eating disorder or both: BDD always includes a debilitating or excessive fear of judgment by others, as is seen with social anxiety, social phobia and some OCD problems; or, alternately, it may be a part of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and compulsive overeating. The term "body dysmorphic disorder" itself describes only those excessive social-acceptance fears that relate to one's personal body image. Depending on the individual, it may or may not also be part of one of these wider or related syndromes. The sufferer may complain of several specific features or a single feature, or a vague feature or general appearance, causing psychological distress that impairs occupational and/or social functioning, sometimes to the point of severe depression and anxiety, development of other anxiety disorders, social withdrawal or complete social isolation, and more. It is estimated that 1-2% of the world's population meet all the diagnostic criteria for BDD (Psychological ...http://booksllc.net/?id=369730 ... Read more

Description:
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) continues to challenge professionals due to symptom severity, co-morbidity, suicidal ideation, and overvalued ideation. Despite the disorder's severity, little research exists. Clinical observation suggests a noteworthy history of abuse; therefore the present study investigated the reported rate of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse in BDD patients. OCD patients were chosen as a comparison group because BDD is considered to be an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder. A group survey design was used (N=50 for each group). Results show significantly higher levels of emotional and sexual abuse in the BDD sample versus the OCD sample. No significant differences were found in physical abuse. Abuse may be a contributing factor in BDD, but not in OCD. ... Read more

Description:
Although clinical impressions suggest that patients with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) experience distress in social situations, social anxiety in BDD has received little investigation. This study examined social anxiety in 81 patients with BDD and change in social anxiety with pharmacotherapy. Subjects completed the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SADS) and were assessed with measures of BDD symptomatology. Participants in a placebo-controlled fluoxetine trial completed measures at baseline and endpoint. The mean SADS score was 1.3 SD units higher than nonclinical sample means but consistent with other clinical sample means. Social anxiety was significantly correlated with BDD severity. Greater depressive symptoms as well as comorbid avoidant personality disorder, but not comorbid social phobia, were also associated with higher SADS scores. Social anxiety did not improve more with fluoxetine than placebo, yet it improved significantly more in fluoxetine responders than in nonresponders. Understanding social anxiety in BDD has implications for reducing rates of misdiagnosis and treatment dropout. ... Read more
