5-0 out of 5 stars sucha great help
This was a book for a friend of mine. She has stage 3.5 of breast cancer. She said the book gave her more information than most other sources. She learned things vital to her illness. I am so sad a cure has not been found for this.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm so grateful this book exists!
Advanced Breast Cancer was the first book I read after getting the news that my breast cancer had spread to the bone.I had read Musa Mayer's story of her personal experience with primary breast cancer, Examining Myself, only a year before when I faced Stage II cancer, and found it completely absorbing.I was unsure, however, how she would deal with the subject of metastatic disease, which she does not herself have.

I am so grateful for her treatment of the subject. While Advanced Breast Cancer is not an easy book to read, and is perhaps not suited to those who are still in shock and very frightened, it provides the kind of clear information that ultimately relieves fears of the future, rather than exacerbating them.Information from a "factual", medical point of view is good and necessary, but I always find myself asking, "But what will really happen? Will I be allowed to suffer?", or be abandoned, or treated as "less than".As the one man profiled in the book notes, "One thing I have thought about in the past is that there are no lessons on dying. For many, death is not the problem, but rather the process of dying. No one can teach you that, and it's an unknown territory".It is true that we will all face death essentially alone. This book, however, allows us to glimpse the ways others have journeyed toward that "good night", and makes us feel somewhat less alone.

If this book scares you, put it away for a while. But don't discard it.You may come to a time when it tells you exactly what you want to know.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very depressing
This book is very well written, but very depressing. As a woman with advanced breast cancer, I face each and every day with joy and happiness. Each day is a gift, and I plan to unwrap many more. I fill my mind with positive thoughts about LIVING, about being that statistic who makes it, about willing my cancer to go away. And it is. When I was first diagnosed, I purchased this book because I intend to live, and this book promised a guide to that. I ended up in tears after only a short time of looking through this book, because it is more of a guide to dying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Down to earth and validating
I bought this book two years ago, right after my diagnosis of breast cancer and after I received my pathology report - which indicated I was apt to end up with recurrence or spread. This book was not at all what I expected.I was expecting a guide to treatment options - dry and factual. What I got instead- showed that others had dealt with this very difficult issue and so could I, if need be.I passed the book on to a friend already in this position. Now, two years later, I am facing metastatic disease myself and have bought my own copy of the book again. Knowing that others have gone before me makes it easier for me to handle myself.Thank you, Musa.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Frank Source of Information
As the spouse of someone with metestatic breast cancer, I highly recommend this book.It is a very emotional read on a very difficult subject. For months, I searched the Internet, libraries and bookstores for information.Friends sent some of the more popular cancer books. But nowhere could I find a comprehensive source of information on advanced stages of breast cancer.I didn't need a book on initial stages of cancer, miracle cures or a motivational story of one individual's treatment.I wanted a book that realistically addressed advanced stage cancer. This was the book I was looking for, and the book that provided the most help. The medical information provided is presented in a logical and solid manner. The personal stories communicate the emotional and practical implications of the disease. The writing style is articulate, concise and interesting. Musa Mayer has done an amazing job with a horrible subject.

I recommend you read some of the excerpts posted on this site, prior to ordering. They provide a good indication of the subject matter and the manner it is presented.I found this book personally very helpful. It has proven to be a trusted reference, and a tremendous source of both medical and personal information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you choose only one Breast Cancer Book...
There are many good breast cancer books out there, and a couple of excellent ones. This book is outstanding, because it is able to include all the necessary medical information, while including all the other information that you need to take care of your life. I am more than my breasts, and more than my breast cancer!

This book includes the latest treatment guidelines for breast cancer, goes over the practical issues issues of work, insurance, and money, assembling a support team, coping with side effects, and going through the entire process. The medical information is clear, to the point, and well-written. It is the equal of any other book.

This is the only book which had quotes from survivors throughout the book, and the only book which has a thorough discussion of how to manage your everyday life while you go through treatment. No other book so frankly discusses what you can do to raise money to get through treatment, and what difficulties you may face at work or at home.

This book has only two flaws - it is a large book, and gets hard to haul everywhere (No heavier than Susan Love's book, though, and a much better book!) The second flaw is that there are pages that are recommended for copying. These pages are scattered throughout the book, and would be best assembled in an appendix or a separate workbook. ... Product Description

“I want to be brave. I want to be big. I want to be gracious and cool. I want to be the Audrey Hepburn of cancer…”

Gail Konop Baker was a runner, yoga practitioner, and lifelong subscriber to Prevention magazine. As her forty-sixth birthday approached, she looked forward to a time when she could at last take a deep breath, with one child heading off to college and the other two busy with their lives. She finally felt as if she was getting her life back.

Then, right before Valentine’s Day 2006, she heard the words that would forever change her: Just to be safe, I think we should biopsy.

It was the beginning of her year-long struggle with breast cancer and its fallout—one that would upstage any midlife crisis she’d fretted was waiting in the wings. “I want to feel bad about my neck. I do,” she writes. “But I feel bad I may not ever get to feel bad about my neck.” Gail was suddenly faced with the truth that awaits us all—this was her life, and she would do anything to hold on to it. As a doctor’s wife, she knew more than she should about her diagnosis and treatment. As a mother, she found unbearable the idea of not being there for the next birthday, next graduation, next anything. And as a woman who’d put her dreams on hold for years, she was determined to make every minute count.

But Cancer Is a Bitch is about much more than the “C” word; it's about the outrageous challenges of marriage, the joys and unpredictability of motherhood, about figuring out what it is you want to do with your life, about wanting to live now.

Funny, raw, and moving, this story will resonate with every mother and wife, and with anyone who has been affected by cancer. It is one woman’s unforgettable, beautifully told account of juggling midlife and motherhood with a rogue boob—and, ultimately, triumphing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun look at cancer
Gail Konop Baker has done two things with Cancer is a Bitch. First, written a wry and satirical look at her own journey with cancer, and second given us some truth and honesty in what it takes to balance both health, home, children, and a recalcitrant husband. At times the book and its insights seemed a bit too superficial, but in all, it was a quick fun read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read, enjoy, and listen, too, if you like
Why a memoir? And don't tell me it's because everyone's got a book in them. This, I do not want to know until everyone also has a ghost writer on hand, or has a way with words like, for instance, Gail Konop Baker.

'Cancer is a Bitch, Or I'd Rather Be Having a Midlife Crisis' is as honest a title as it is an amusing one. What started as a journaling project after a diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ morphed into a blogging endeavor and eventually yielded this terrific little documentary of one woman's wallow.Yes, wallow. But not with the negative connotation that we've all been warned off of - or warned off of admitting, at least.

Gail Baker chronicled her dizzyingly fast cycles of hope, despair, anger, frustration, and triumph in words that are both frank and funny. As a companion to someone going through a health crisis, 'Cancer is a Bitch', is a firm hand-holding and a gripe session and a hug.And if you happen to be free of the fear of your own mortality just now, it's a lesson in grace and a pleasure to read.

Gail spent a little time with me at PsychJourney dot com, talking over the spaces in between the lines of Cancer is a Bitch, Or I'd Rather Be Having a Midlife Crisis. You can learn more about Gail and her terrific blogs, The Accidental Memoirist, and The Secret Lives of Doctor's Wives, at GailKonopBaker dot com, as well.

Oh, and go get a mammogram.

5-0 out of 5 stars What woman are going through!
Gail's book is such an open and honest insight into what goes through a woman's mind when the doctor's say "This looks suspicious". I read and thoroughly enjoyed the book, about how the diagnosis of cancer can change everything in a person's like. Gail's writing is like a journal, filled with her deepest thoughts of what is like to be told "you've got cancer..."I strongly recommend reading the book and getting copies for woman who have either been recently diagnosed or have gone through breast cancer. It provides an insight as to what will happen and provide solidarity to those who have gone through it...

Cannot recommend highly enough

4-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant read.
At the age of 45, Gail Konop Baker is a mother of three with a radiologist as a husband. She practiced yoga, ran, ate organic food, and rarely became sick. Gail also hoped to start her writing career with her novel about a woman with breast cancer. Then, strangely enough, not long before Valentine's Day, Gail is diagnosed with breast cancer. This begins her struggle with marriage, children, with her oldest going to college soon, family, and of course, the cancer itself-all in a heartfelt and humorous way.

Baker's humorous tone made the novel a quick read. I also liked that, for a book that deals cancer, the novel was not sad or too self-pitying. The novel is titled as Cancer is a Bitch: Or I'd Rather be Having a Midlife Crisis, but through the novel, Baker has a midlife crisis, so the novel is not just about cancer, which was also nice. I enjoyed reading about her family and experiences. Because her husband was a doctor, Baker knew most of her doctors on a more personal level, which, I'm sure you can imagine, can be odd, especially when you're lifting up your shirt at your doctor's appointment.

The best part about this novel is that I would want to read it even if Baker did not have cancer or was going through a midlife crisis. That's how powerful of a narrator she is. She can make going to the grocery store seem interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book about cancer that won't leave you exhausted...
Although everyone's experience with cancer is different, and no one can write about it in the same way, I was able to read this author's book without feeling a cloak of heaviness push me down. Although the subject matter is not an easy one to relate, Cancer is a Bitch was written with a light and humorous hand; of course, the author doesn't disregard the emotional and physical impact of cancer, but in her telling her own tale, she doesn't allow herself, and thus the reader, to become burdened by it to the point of inertia or write with a overly-sentimental pen. There are poignant moments, and moments of clarity: this is cancer and sometimes people with cancer die...a cancer that can alter the way a woman looks physically, the way she perceives herself as a woman, the dynamics of her family changing - all these things could be darkly drawn, but the author did not bury her book in high drama....I forgot about these darker moments as I read Konop Baker's witty accounting. When I closed the book, I wondered if the author will be writing something else? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good resource.....not just for the Breast Cancer Husband...
_Stand by Her_ is more of a how-to relationship guide for Breast Cancer Husbands, Sons, Fathers, and Grandsons than a guide on breast cancer disease and treatment. It effectively informs/guides the reader as to how to communicate with and support the affected woman in his life, no matter what their kinship is.This is a VERY GOOD book, a great complementary volume for _Breast Cancer Husband_.Find the time to read them both if your wife has breast cancer. Read _Stand by Her_ first if you are not the husband or primary caregiver.God bless you all in your time of difficulty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking at breast cancer through a male lens
This is a terrific resource for any husband, father, or supportive caregiver whose loved one is facing breast cancer.John Anderson opens his heart and life to us and offers wonderful practical advice from the knowledge he gained during the time he and his wife Sharon battled breast cancer. As anyone who has been down the road of navigating a life threatening illness knows, it is not easy.John honestly looks at the toll it takes on a marriage and how you can come through together on the other side.As I read this book, it really became a testament to the power of honesty and strength of two people confronting their fears and reaffirming their love at the same time.OK but it isn't just about that - it is also practical information that can help anyone who feels helpless when their spouse is so ill.Things like how to handle that first time you look at the scars of surgery or when is it a good time to tell the kids.Anderson confronts his own guilt - tired of having a sick wife, tired of the stress and tired of being positive and that honesty will help readers who may be facing a similar situation cope. This is a tremendous resource and one that you will read cover to cover and then go back and reread particular sections.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for both health collections and personal consultation
STAND BY HER: A BREAST CANCER GUIDE FOR MEN stands nearly alone in the wealth of breast cancer guides directed for women. This focuses on how men can support their families and friends diagnosed with breast cancer, offering chapters based on the author's personal experience and research. From the hardest part of waiting during surgery to helping a loved one's recovery and understanding her feelings, STAND BY HER is an invaluable guide to support. A must for both health collections and personal consultation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful guide to a husband trying to help a wife with cancer
A friend sent me a copy of this book after he read my review of The Selfish Pig's Guide to Caring here on Amazon. He knew that I have been the primary caregiver for my wife who has had brain cancer for over 30 years, and he wondered if Stand by Her: A Breast Cancer Guide for Men would be helpful to him -- his wife has recently been diagnosed with a stomach cancer.

My answer is maybe, depending on the husband and to a certain extent on the wife -- all of us are different and all of us react to the challenges in very different ways. I don't know much about breast cancer, but my sister went through the entire process described in this book six years ago, and they both thought it range true for them in several ways.

What I do know is that coming to grips with the issues presented to a husband arising from his wife's cancer can be very difficult to deal with. The Well blog on "The New York Times" website recently reportedforon a study of 515 patients who received diagnoses of brain tumors or multiple sclerosis from 2001 through 2006. Women in the study who were told they had a serious illness were seven times as likely to become separated or divorced as men with similar health problems. Over all, about 12 percent of the patients in the study ended up separated or divorced, but when the man became ill, only 3 percent experienced the end of a marriage. Among women, about 21 percent ended up separated or divorced.

Readers reaction ran a wide gamut, with a very large number of women and men finding the results "pathetic" and proof that men are "evil" or that "men can't cope." As a caregiver for the past thirty and more years, very little of the discussion was very helpful to me; after all 80% of the men stayed with their ill wives. Suggestions on how to increase that percentage would have been much more constructive.

A few posts focused on a suggestion by the authors of the studies; they felt men had more trouble coping with the demands of caregiving because they lacked competence and training to do so. In particular, studies by the Well Spouse organization indicate that "spousal caregivers require a different kind of support than other family caregivers, due to the involvement of intimacy in the relationship. [we] know that studies have found that of all family caregivers, spousal caregivers take the longest to self-identify; and of these, men take longer than women." The group agrees with the sponsors of the study that more support for spousal caregivers, especially at the time of diagnosis, might reduce the divorce and separation rate.

There are more sources of support now than there were 30 years ago when my wife's tumor became a part of our lives, but every care giver is well advised to find some sort of approach to (and if possible support in) the new role they choose to accept.

Anderson uses his own experience to help men become supportive care givers while dealing with their own fears and emotions about a loved one with breast cancer. He tries to describe the physical and emotional challenges women face during treatment. He also discusses the strains on marriage and intimacy. Altogether, I believe Anderson has written a very helpful book for any husband facing the challenges standing by a wife with cancer.

At the same time, I hope people will read the one star review here on Amazon written by cindyinthewind . She makes a valid point about remission rates, but makes a very much more important point about how people differ in their approaches to the challenges. She writes:

"Men who are supporting a woman with breast cancer need to remember first that she's still an individual and an adult, and will remain so. She doesn't automatically transform into a helpless child who needs comforting from little pink teddy bears. Show her first that you don't think of her as infantile just because of her disease, and that it's not her breasts you value as much as you value HER, and you won't go wrong."

I've tried to follow cindyinthewind's advice for 30 plus years -- as a frail human being with sometimes mixed results. I agree completely that patients are individuals and have very different needs.

Each husband and each wife need to come to their own personal conclusions on how to deal with the challenges. Anderson's book can be very helpful to a husband trying to be as helpful as he is able to be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Perpetuates the misbelief that 5 years' remission = cure
As a woman who has had breast cancer, I have glanced through this book to see what kind of advice it offers men for helping women through it. One thing that really stuck out to me is that the author is apparently under the misimpression that if a woman goes five years without a recurrence of breast cancer, she is "officially cured" and it's time to celebrate. This is a really dangerous belief to perpetuate, and may devastate women who have recurrences after they thought they were "out of the woods." The sad fact is that there is no such thing as a breast cancer "cure," and that unlike many other cancers for which five years is the "all clear" point, there is never such a point for breast cancer. It can recur at any time, but based on the particular type, it may be more or less likely to recur. This book shouldn't be spreading the myth of "five years out and you're cured"; it's very irresponsible.

Less importantly but still significant, there's also no acknowledgment in this book that women with breast cancer each feel differently about the "pinkapalooza" that is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Men should see how the woman in their lives feels about it before bombarding her with pink-ribbon junk, because some of us just HATE it--the pink products, the tchotchkes, the charity races, the whole thing. In fact, for some of us, just getting through the month of October, faced with reminders of our ordeal at every turn, is painful.

Men who are supporting a woman with breast cancer need to remember first that she's still an individual and an adult, and will remain so. She doesn't automatically transform into a helpless child who needs comforting from little pink teddy bears. Show her first that you don't think of her as infantile just because of her disease, and that it's not her breasts you value as much as you value HER, and you won't go wrong. ... Read more

Product Description
"This book is a fine resource for every doctor, patient, and family who has to confront the reality of breast cancer."
—Bernie S. Siegel, M.D., Author of Love, Medicine, and Miracles

Attitudes about breast cancer diagnosis are changing, and women and their families are becoming more assertive about managing their disease. They know that more choices are available now than ever before, and they are willing to make them.
This book encourages you to take control. Cathy Hitchcock and Steve Austin, N.D., have written a book for women who are ready to actively participate in their diagnosis and treatment.
A husband and wife team, Hitchcock and Austin walk you step-by-step through each part of diagnosis, treatment (both conventional and alternative), and prevention (including prevention of a recurrence). With the help of a flow chart, they examine different diagnosis options. They also suggest questions to ask your doctor and offer checklists, summaries, and overviews.
Interwoven with all this information, Cathy shares her personal story as a breast cancer survivor. She describes her ordeal upon discovering the lump and the transitions she has gone through to live with the diagnosis in a life-affirming way. Unlike many other breast cancer patients, Cathy didn’t simply accept the choices offered by medical doctors. Instead, with the help of her husband, she studied the research and made her own decisions about conventional and alternative treatments. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We ARE free to think and decide
Of the books I read when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, this was the one that seemed most objective. It was also most challenging to blind acceptance of what the medical establishment might have us believe. Cancer treatment is NOT a black-and-white process, and this book shows why. Patients have the right and responsibility to participate in decisions about their health care, and this book gives information to help in the decision-making process. I very much hope that Steve and Cathy will soon publish an update, as the statistics, surgical options, drug regimens, etc have changed dramatically since 1994. Notably absent is mention of DIEP flap breast reconstruction. Nonetheless, this book will never be totally irrelevant, since the process of acquiring knowledge, and the concept that we ARE free to choose our health care, are timeless and liberating.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate breast cancer reference, naturally
As a naturopathic physician, I have never seen any book on any type of cancer as well thought out and executed as this. What a fantastic resource. 5-0 out of 5 stars book for children
This is a book written by children for children. It is for kids in elementary school. I would not recommend this book for pre-k through 2nd grade. It answers many questions and lets children know what to expect when a parent has cancer. This is a well written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for families affected by cancer
This is an easy to read book from the child's perspective, which makes it easier to relate for kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book a child can understand
My daughter is undergoing chemo. She was told she would lose her hair, so before she lost all of her hair I ordered this book for my grandson. It helped tremendously for him to understand why Mama was bald.I recommend this book highly to anyone who has a child whose parent is going through chemo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best picture book about parental cancer
Many children's books about cancer in a parent treat it as movie disease: a convenient way to introduce mortality. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I needed a way to let my children know what they could expect as far as my therapy, and let them know what might happen emotionally.

This is by far the best of several children's picture books written about a parent with cancer. Because it is written and illustrated by two sisters, it conveys what kids want to know. It showed the passage of time during treatment, and it showed that people were loving and kind and hopeful in the midst of a rotten time.

This book is excellent, and I would recommend it to any parent who has been diagnosed with cancer as a way to open discussions with elementary-aged and younger children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!
I go to school at Village Elementry in Coronado.Adrienne and Abigail are the cusins of a kid in my class named Paul. They got to come to our school and read the book to us.I think it was very good.It really is based on a true story! The book was about there mom who had breast cancer. They even wrote a hat song in the story!I give the book two thumbs up! ... Product Description

"Breast cancer may very well be history's oldest malaise, known as well to the ancients as it is to us. The women who have endured it share a unique sisterhood. Queen Atossa and Dr. Jerri Nielsen -- separated by era and geography, by culture, religion, politics, economics, and world view -- could hardly have been more different. Born 2,500 years apart, they stand as opposite bookends on the shelf of human history. One was the most powerful woman in the ancient world, the daughter of an emperor, the mother of a god; the other is a twenty-first-century physician with a streak of adventure coursing through her veins. From the imperial throne in ancient Babylon, Atossa could not have imagined the modern world, and only in the driest pages of classical literature could Antarctica-based Jerri Nielsen even have begun to fathom the Near East five centuries before the birth of Christ. For all their differences, however, they shared a common fear that transcends time and space." -- from Bathsheba's Breast

In 1967, an Italian surgeon touring Amsterdam's Rijks museum stopped in front of Rembrandt's Bathsheba at Her Bath, on loan from the Louvre, and noticed an asymmetry to Bathsheba's left breast; it seemed distended, swollen near the armpit, discolored, and marked with a distinctive pitting. With a little research, the physician learned that Rembrandt's model, his mistress Hendrickje Stoffels, later died after a long illness, and he conjectured in a celebrated article for an Italian medical journal that the cause of her death was almost certainly breast cancer.

A horror known to every culture in every age, breast cancer has been responsible for the deaths of 25 million women throughout history. An Egyptian physician writing 3,500 years ago concluded that there was no treatment for the disease. Later surgeons recommended excising the tumor or, in extreme cases, the entire breast. This was the treatment advocated by the court physician to sixth-century Byzantine empress Theodora, the wife of Justinian, though she chose to die in pain rather than lose her breast. Only in the past few decades has treatment advanced beyond disfiguring surgery.

In Bathsheba's Breast, historian James S. Olson -- who lost his left hand and forearm to cancer while writing this book -- provides an absorbing and often frightening narrative history of breast cancer told through the heroic stories of women who have confronted the disease, from Theodora to Anne of Austria, Louis XIV's mother, who confronted "nun's disease" by perfecting the art of dying well, to Dr. Jerri Nielson, who was dramatically evacuated from the South Pole in 1999 after performing a biopsy on her own breast and self-administering chemotherapy. Olson explores every facet of the disease: medicine's evolving understanding of its pathology and treatment options; its cultural significance; the political and economic logic that has dictated the terms of a war on a "woman's disease"; and the rise of patient activism. Olson concludes that, although it has not yet been conquered, breast cancer is no longer the story of individual women struggling alone against a mysterious and deadly foe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breast Cancer from 480 B.C.E. to present day
This was a well written book which followed many personal stories of women through out history and their battle with cancer. It is a history book but was written dramatically and keeps the reader interested. It covers almost every topic concerning women and breast cancer. The only complaint is that the second half of the book is based more on the politics and legislation of breast cancer which becomes slightly repetitive and boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Everyone Affected by Breast Cancer
As a metastatic breast cancer patient, I found this book to be enormously enlightening. For the first time, I feel as though I really understand this disease and how we've gotten to this point in time in terms of prevailing attitudes, available treatments, doctor-patient relationships, and overall prognosis. Although it's a history lesson, this book has also served to give me a new perspective for evaluating my own personal options. I feel empowered by the information in these pages. It points out how deadly serious breast cancer is, even though some would have us believe otherwise. I recommend this book for everyone who is affected by breast cancer (which should be practically everyone).

5-0 out of 5 stars A sensitive,multi-faceted and comprehensivelook at breast cancer
James Olson is to be commended for writing this much needed history of breast cancer for the layman. My husband is a radiologist beginning a fellowship in breast imaging. He discovered this fascinating book and when he was finished I asked him to give it to me.Like the previous reviewer, I couldn't put it down.I don't have breast cancer, but I am of the age when many of my peers have developed this frightening disease.Olson is realistic, empathetic, and well informed. My favorite line came from former child star Shirley Temple Black who, rather than have a biopsy turn into a radical mastecomy, responded to the press by saying, "The surgeon will make the incision.I will make the decision."You can't read this book without having enormous respect for the women who did their own research, asked the right questions, and took on the conventional wisdom and arrogance of male physicians. At the same time, Olson is brutal on the hucksters and frauds who attempt to explain away cancer with psychobabble and unproveable theories.Bathseba's Breast is not an optimistic book, but it can be reassuring that slow, steady progress is being made in the battle against breast cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fighting with Hope Against Breast Cancer
Bathsheba's Breast: Women, Cancer & History by James Olson is a far-reaching examination of the dreaded disease of breast cancer.Impressive for its scope of historical, medical, political and personal references, the book transcends its obvious historical imperative by including much about living with hope in the face of adversity as well as dying without surrendering to the evil disease.

A cancer diagnosis today is not necessarily a death sentence.Olson explains how breast cancer has threatened all women, regardless of demography, since at least the time of the pharaohs and probably since creation of the species. The fifth of Olson's 11 carefully referenced chapters inaugurates the book's evolution of Hope for breast cancer sufferers, signaling with its title, "New Beginnings: Assault on the Radical Mastectomy." Make no mistake, neither the chapter nor the book reveal the silver bullet that will conquer breast cancer. However, from this point forward, Bathsheba's Breast explains how medical science has made progress against the disease - sometimes despite itself - and how that progress appeared to be accelerating at the end of the 20th century, albeit in tortuously slow steps for those fighting the disease.Increasingly credible optimism emerges as Olson explains the evolution of medicine's knowledge and attitudes about breast cancer, the birth of breast cancer patient advocacy and the growing arsenal of weapons that medical researchers, physicians and patients are bringing to the fight.

Olson is comprehensive, well organized and even entertaining in an appropriate tone for such a serious topic as he gives us the history, evolution and status of the war against breast cancer.Bathsheba's Breast is suitable for all readers, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age or health. Its appeal to such a broad audience lies mainly in the mature tone and integrated style with which Olson approaches all aspects of the subject. It's also because he's deciphered cancer's jargon of "omas" and "ectomies" so they're understandable, both in definition and in context.Readers will be pleased how smoothly he combines history, complicated medical research, political science and public opinion with the personal stories of patients to produce a compelling read.

Faithful to the historigraphical method, the book ventures 3,500 years back to an Egyptian surgeon who wrote about "bulging tumors" in the breast for which "There is no treatment."Olson tells how Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, studied the nature and cause of cancer, attributing its cause to "black bile," one of his four theoretical fluids of the body: blood, phlegm, yellow and black bile. The book develops a special character as it links these ancients to women of subsequent history who suffered from breast cancer. We learn about victims like Theodora, wife of Justinian, the emperor of Byzantium in the sixth century, Anne of Austria, the mother of Louis XIV in the 17th century, George Washington's mother in the 18th century, Abigail Adams, daughter of President John Adams in the 19th century and many sufferers in the 20th century. These personal experiences of breast cancer victims provide substantive information and welcomed inspiration for all readers, no doubt especially for those with the disease. Some stories are optimistic, others sad, some even humorous. Teddy Roosevelt's far-from-bashful, strong-willed daughter, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, battled the disease throughout much of her life. She lost one breast to cancer in 1956 and in 1970, at age 86, underwent a second mastectomy on the other breast.Emerging from the second operation, she announced unashamedly she was "America's only topless octogenarian."

The 20th century's sexual revolution, catalyzed by nude photos of Marilyn Monroe and increasingly large monthly circulations of Hugh Hefner's "Playboy" magazine beginning in the 1950's, established the cult of the breast in America.Olson explains how big breasts became big business as society placed new value on them because of their erotic appeal. As America's fascination with the breast was exported around the world, women, men and physicians became more amenable to alternative treatments for breast cancer. Ironically, preoccupation with eroticism encouraged the pursuit of a cure.

Bathsheba's Breast adds credibility and emotion to the history of breast cancer by sharing experiences of many 20th century women who've fought the disease with bravery and hope. The legacy of Rose Kushner's 16-year battle against breast cancer and the indifference it often suffered from arrogant physicians and disinterested politicians is unforgettable. Her emotions flared - as do those of readers today - as we read about a surgeon shouting at her, "No patient is going to tell me how to do my surgery."

No doubt Kushner told that surgeon what she wrote in her best-selling, 1975 book, Breast Cancer, "We women should be free, knowledgeable, and completely conscious when the time comes for decision, so that we can make it for ourselves. Our lives are at stake, not a surgeon's." Kushner is the founder of the American breast cancer advocacy movement who battled valiantly but ultimately lost her war with the disease in January, 1990.

The evolution of breast cancer advocacy in America inspired by Rose Kushner is a compelling part of the book.Olson visits labs and legislatures to explain breast cancer's clinical and political issues, ranging from the campaign for lumpectomies and radiation instead of radical mastectomies as initial treatment alternatives to the need for greater government support for cancer research. He tells how Shirley Temple Black, Betty Ford, Happy Rockefeller, Betty Rollin, Jill Ireland, Linda McCartney, Dr. Jerri Nielsen and many others had the courage to go public with their battles against breast cancer, generating publicity that kept the disease in clinical and political focus.

Although Olson mentions it only quietly in a brief preface at the beginning of the book, his personal battle against cancer has permitted him to fuse Bathsheba's Breast with an empathy that's probably the ultimate reason why the book is as good as it is.It wastes no time with irrelevance as it moves seamlessly from history, medical science and politics to the media, pop culture and patients. The story of the battle against breast cancer is multi-faceted and James Olson shines a bright light on all of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Blend of History and Medicine
My husband purchased this book for me after he heard the author on NPR.I could not put it down. The author's approach to looking at breast cancer over time, the changes in treatment options, and how accidental findings changed the course of medical treatment over time was illuminating. The book also raises the spectre as to how much of breast cancer treatment advances, or lack of, were the result of this being primarily but not exclusively a female disease. I do not have a formal medical background, so I was a little leary that it would be too technical. But instead, I found it to be highly readable and engaging. It also sends a strong message that from the beginning of time breast cancer held no one harmless. And in many ways, the key to the advances have come from patients taking their health destiny into their own hands and not simply accepting a physician's treatment recommendation.Certainly sheds light on the more recent discussions about the value of mammography as a diagnostic tool.Well worth reading!! ... From The Breast Cancer Book of Strength & Courage:
This was a special night, a night when I would share with the public one of the most private parts of my battle against breast cancer. This was the night I would share my story of hair loss. . . . Steve turned to me, the camera took a two shot, and there I was, for the first time in my life, anchoring a newscast without a strand of hair on my head.
It was quite a moment, for many reasons. Mainly, for me, it represented how far I'd come, and how much I'd grown! Cancer has become a journey of self-discovery that has helped me develop self-confidence and learn to love myself for myself.
— Anchorwoman Leslie Mouton, who reported the news in Texas one night while bald due to chemotherapy treatments

3-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring yes, helpful info - no
This book is inspiring and entertaining with uplifting stories of women affected by cancer. The only thing I found discouraging is that so many people facing cancer don't question some of the treatments they receive and do more digging into what is available, rather than just giving into the status quo and taking whatever their doctor gives them without question. I am an alternative medicine fan, so of course, I was hoping to see more accounts of women taking the initiative in this book and opting for more alternative treatments, which wasn't there. One reviewer mentioned breast cancer as possibly a "gift of higher understanding," which I just don't see. As a matter of fact, I can't see any cancer as being a "gift" of any sort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly, not what you think!
A sensitive, well edited and written series of vignettes by, for, and about women and cancer. Forty six women share their stories, addressing depression, reflection, inspiration, information, and retrospection of facing cancer. But it is more than another breast cancer book; it is a celebration of women and their wealth of responses to adversity. This is a must-read for any woman facing her own or a friend's cancer, or for any man who loves or cares for a woman facing a medical challenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of The Breast Cancer Book of Strength and Courage
"The Breast Cancer Book of Strength and Courage" was a wonderful source of comfort and encouragement.Having been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I could truly relate to the feelings other women in the book experienced.I too had to make so many decisions in a short period of time.As I read the book, I realized how many other women had been in that same terrifying place, and how many women met the challenge of healing head on.Every woman's cancer is different, but the feelings that accompany the daignosis are the same.I truly appreciate the honesty and the willingness of all of the survivors who shared their stories.I would highly recommend the book to all women with breast cancer and to their families. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good try, but use this book with caution.
Based on my 20 years as a medical oncologist/university faculty member, I find this guide acceptable with reservations. For example, this book was partly out of date on some treatment issues the minute it reached bookstores -- a common problem in medical publishing -- and now is even more out of date. The book is OK as a dictionary of medical terms, a tolerable overview of treatments and basic cancer concepts, and a reasonable quide to other information resources.I disagree with some of its tips for dealing with chemotherapy and radiation and, in several areas, the book made recommendations that I consider unwise.Unless you really are a "complete idiot," double check information with your oncologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge is Power
"So much to learn--so little time--and I can't even find information on the subject of breast cancer."Those were my thoughts almost 13 years ago when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. How I wish there had been something of the caliber of THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO LIVING WITH BREAST CANCER at that time. This book should be in the hands of anyone facing a breast cancer diagnosis, as well as their families and friends. It includes many practical facets of dealing with the disease. To me, the sentence which best sums up the importance of what this book provides the reader is found on page 37--"Knowledge is power, so it's important to be an imformed consumer."Frequently I receive calls from women (and sometimes men) who know someone who has been diagnosed, or perhaps they themselves have been diagnosed."What can I do that will be helpful?""What are the right things to say?""What are the right things to do?"One of the most helpful things to do, in my opinion, is to see that the person has access to practical and accurate information such as that found in this book. What better way to say, "I'm thinking of you and I want to be of help."This book is written in such a way that the reader can focus on the issues that are especially important at any given time.It deals with the gamut of topics--from biopsy to surgery to vocabulary to chemotherapy to radiation to lymphedema to reconstruction to support groups to helpful websites, etc., etc., etc. . . and it does so with the right balance of levity.Who says we can't have a chuckle or two while reading about a serious subject?A special "thank you" to the breast cancer survivors/authors for so thoughtfully and thoroughly covering a subject that is so important to so many people in our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book
This is a must have book that everyone needs to have. If you have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer or have a friend who has been diagnosed. You will love this book.I'am a 2 1/2 year survivor and I was amazed at the broad scope of information that was in this book. I really wished it had been in the bookstores when I was first diagnosed. The ladies who wrote it did a wonderful job at putting it in an easy to read format that everyone can understand. And I loved all the little personal comments from other Breast Cancer survivors! It's not a book quoted by doctors alone. But by people like you and me who have been through all the treatments and have survived telling it like it is.It takes you step by step on what you will go through in each treatment. And how to deal with everything that is happening to you. What a wonderful way of letting others know that it is all right to feel the way they feel on a daily basis of living with and through Breast Cancer. And I was amazed at all the Resource information. All the phone numbers and addresses for everything you might need along the way. They really did cover every aspect of dealing with Breast Cancer. If you have a friend who has just been diagnosed with Breast Cancer this would make a perfect gift. And you would be letting them know you cared and that you are there for them through it all.

Sincerely, Margaret

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful way to learn about healing and dealing with Breast Cancer
I have had breaset cancer, as have my two daughters, one of them very serious breast cancer.I found this book a wonderful insight into what my daughters felt.Even though we talked all of the time, and I was with them through operations and chemo, I think that they tried not to spend time talking about what they were going through and feeling, so as not to bother other people and/or dwell on the down sides of life at the time. The way Patty Gelman, was able to express her deepest feelings in a humorous way gave me insights I wish I had had before.Despite dealing with these difficult matters, the book was easy and pleasant to read, and it did make me laugh! They say that humor is the best way to deal with the unbearable and this book helps one do that.

Product Description
2004 RSNA Bestseller!

Early detection is our most effective means for reducing the number of unnecessary deaths caused by breast cancer; however, the lack of skilled mammographic readings, especially in early stage breast cancer, makes this a less effective tool than it could be.In this book, one of the world's most renowned mammographers shares his decades of experience in the analysis and interpretation of mammographic images.

With Dr. Tabar's clear procedures and expert guidance, you will learn to discern the most subtle of pathologic changes to ensure that patients receive optimal and timely treatment. You will also improve your ability to recognize the full range of normal anatomic variability, avoiding unnecessary additional imaging and interventional procedures.

This book contains more than 1,600 high-definition images, many in full-color, to demonstrate anatomic structures, variations in normal tissue, and difficult-to-identify abnormalities. You will also appreciate clear photographs of pathologic specimens, including subgross 3-D, and large, thin-section histologic sections, correlated with mammographic images.

The result of more than two decades of intensive clinical experience, this is the ultimate mammographic atlas for developing expert interpretive skills. No radiologist or breast imager should be without this highly instructive professional reference. ... Read more

I just got back from the course taught by Dr. Tabar and it was phenomenal! If you can't attend his course, then you must have this book.It covers all the material in the course in a clear and concise manner using almost 1600 images. This would also be a great reference for pathologists and surgeons who perform breast surgery, and techs interested in why they do what they do would find this text a great resource.I will use it as an adjunct learning tool after attending the seminar - I would recommend that buyers of this text do the same.Find the time to go to the seminar and then get the book - and good luck in your practice!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic unique book
This book is really fantastic.
The reader has the pleasant sensation to go through the book like he is attendinga course of the Author, step by step, with no rush, having really the time to understand every concept of what he is reading.
Even pathological images were handy for me, becausei was given the tools to understand them.
The style of the book is very particular as well, because the method is to teach you to understand what you see, explaining accurately whathappened to that patient so that you see that image on the mammogram. I think this method is absolutely brilliant.
Furthermore the book is full of high-quality images and the text is not redundant and tiring, but it is focused to allow you to understand the mammograms.
I think every breast radiologist should have this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful learning experience
So many of us have had to face saddness, fear, illness, and death in our lives.Breast cancer is not prejudice, it does not discriminate, or is understanding, and so many women today are faced with having to deal with this disease in someway.Reading Lillie's book made me realize that although it is frightening, it was okay - okay to change your appearance, your lifestyle, and your outlook on life. With the use of laughter and the comfort of her family and friends, this woman took a life altering experience and, with her mind set, she changed her way of seeing the world. She is a survivor, and after reading this book, you feel the strength that she has gained, and will have the courage and spirit overcome any challenge life gives you.

5-0 out of 5 stars It made me cry - and laugh.
After my friend had breast cancer surgery, I bought Lillie Shockney's book for her and read it myself to be sure it was appropriate.I was impressed with the way she conveyed her hope as well as the hard times. She sharedher effective use of humor, and expressed the importance of gatheringpeople around for support.I gladly passed the book on to my friend withthe hope she would find support in reading about someone who has copedusing methods she has also used.I recommend this book to anyone who iscoping with breast cancer, either as a patient or as a supporter of afriend or family member.

5-0 out of 5 stars I followed every word, it happened to me...
I found this to be an excellent guide. It was well written and didn't use long technical words. My experiences paralled hers and it gave me great insite on the disease. It also has very good references and contacts.Ihave recommended it to many people.I would like to see her write more ofwhat is happening after the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars a MUST READ for every woman!!
I do not have breast cancer and have never had a mastectomy, but I am a woman and that gives me a 1 out of 8 chance of being a member of this club.Lillie Shockney takes you into the examining room, operating room, eveninto the bedroom. But, most importantly, she takes you into her heart. With humor, candor and common sense, she takes away some of the fears andtaboos associated with breast cancer and mastectomies. Her book spurred meto make an appointment for a long overdue mammogram!!God Bless you andyour family, Lillie, for sharing a very personal experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A witty, yet sensitive view of surviving breast cancer.
I've been awarded the opportunity to see up close what a benefit Lillie's book can be to many women facing the shocking diagnosis of breast cancer. As the owner and manager of a small book store, I've had the opportunity toarrange a speaking engagement for Lillie, regarding this issue, at ourlocal university, followed by a booksigning at my store.I could clearlysee on the faces of many in attendance, the appreciation they felt inmeeting someone who knew first hand what they, as "members of theclub" were experiencing. Many times since then, I've recommendedLillie's book to customers at my store who have expressed an interest inbreast cancer resources, either for themselves or for loved ones.Moretimes than I can count, I've given the book to friends, relatives and even"secret pals", because I feel strongly that the story told inthis book deserves to be shared. The only "problem" that Ican find with this book, is that it's difficult to classify! We had quitea time at my store deciding where to shelve it.It could rest easily onthe Inspirational shelf, as well as in the Humor or Psychology andSelf-Help sections! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An embracing intelligent assist
As a naturopathic doctor and breast cancer survivor, this book helped me through the process in a way I could not have gotten any other way. It is written in plain English though it manages very complex concepts. It covers all parts of the cancer experience and was my written guide through the process. I recommend it highly to anyone with breast cancer and anyone who loves anyone with breast cancer and wishes to help.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive resource
I was looking for guidance in what I can do to help prevent breast cancer, beyond the basic list of low fat diet, eating broccoli, exercising and avoiding alcohol. This book is an outstanding, comprehensive resource from a naturopathic standpoint. It goes into great detail on explaining hormones, estrogen's role in the cancer process, how chemicals and toxins in our environment contribute to the increase of breast cancer, what role the liver plays in detoxifying our body and how we can support the liver. The author also gives explicit recommendations on diet and supplements, what they do and how much to take, plus nontoxic alternatives to household cleaning products etc. Breast cancer prevention involves your whole lifestyle and some of the changes may be hard, but the benefits to overall health and our immune system can be enormous. You may not be able to make all the changes at once, but I for one am working on them. This book was written several years ago before the recent studies on the benefits of Vitamin D in breast cancer prevention. The author minimizes the importance of Vitamin D, which is the only real negative of the book, in my opinion. Actually, I would have also liked if she had gone into greater detail on thermography as an adjunct or alternative to mammography. This book is also helpful for women who have cancer, to help them support their bodies through treatment and to help prevent recurrences.

1-0 out of 5 stars New agey nonsense
My wife was given this for free. Her mom died of breast cancer. We care about this issue.

I was dismayed by the book's regular "this is good for that" medical advice. Let's say I'd like to see a little more proof, for example, that a coffee enema is good for liver detoxification. And that detoxification should be done at change of seasons. What? I have a phd in a hard science, so my standards of proof are a bit high.

Simpler advice: avoid processed food

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for EVERYONE
This book is amazing!I got it at the library originally, wasn't really interested but it looked fairly new so I thought, why not?Once I opened the cover, I knew I had to have a copy of my own!!
First off this book is NOT telling you not to have medical treatment-as a matter of fact, it supports it completely. What it is saying is what you can do holistically in ADDITION to your medical treatment.! This book is a must for everyone not just those with breast cancer! It tells you what to eat to prevent cancer...Green Tea is like Magick!!What to eat to rid your body of unwanted radiation. What to consume when you go thru Chemo. It lists different foods, drinks, and herbs and tells their medicinal benefits.
What a great book!! If you don't believe me, go to your local library first and check it out...you'll soon be ordering it thru Amazon yourself!!:)

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Will Save Lives
