Product Description
As Normal as Possible is the story of breast cancer from a caregiver's perspective. Ray Hall was the caregiver to his wife, Brenda, from her first diagnosis in 1996 to her passing in 2008. It tells of their journey through treatments, the effects of those treatments on their lives and the many medical evaluations she encountered through their ordeal with this dreaded disease. The story of the cancer and its issues is intertwined with the story of her life during their years together. Ray wanted to tell this story because it helped him with the devastation of her being gone and often when a celebrity is diagnosed with this disease it becomes a huge story and is splashed all over the headlines, which is as it should be. Brenda Hall was not a celebrity known by the public by any stretch of the imagination; as a matter of fact she avoided the spotlight at all costs. She was a celebrity to her family and friends, the people who were part of their everyday lives. But, she was one of the thousands of ordinary women living ordinary lives who are diagnosed with this disease. As Normal as Possible is Ray's loving tribute to his wife and their life together! A portion of the proceeds from all sales will go to fund breast cancer research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Love Story
My sister is married to one of Ray Hall's brothers, so I have known Ray and Brenda for over 40 years. I knew Ray was writing this book and had been looking forward to reading it.It arrived on Tuesday, and I read it cover-to-cover that night. While the book chronicles Brenda and Ray's journey from the time she was diagnosed with breast cancer until she lost her brave battle, what I mostly gleaned from the book was not the story of her illness, but the story of their incredible love. Not since "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks have I read so moving a tribute. There is something in "As Normal As Possible" for every person who will read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A medical autobiography telling of a caregiver's experiences caring for his wife Brenda during her struggles with breast cancer
R. Lee Hall's AS NORMAL AS POSSIBLE: A BREAST CANCER STORY offers a medical autobiography telling of a caregiver's experiences caring for his wife Brenda during her struggles with breast cancer. It is both a tribute to her life and a survey of caregiving challenges and a cancer patient's struggles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the Book!
I knew Brenda and Ray also; however, we had lost touch with each other over the years. But after Brenda died, a friend of mine had the book and I read it.It was personally touching for me, not only because I knew Brenda and Ray, but also because I am a breast cancer survivor. It reminded me of how lucky I am to still be a SURVIVOR.It is a very touching story, even if you don't know them.It amazes me how well Ray documented the years of appointments and the highs and lows of the disease and their lives. I would encourage anyone to read the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A loving tribute about a special lady
This book is about the struggle my Aunt went through and how she wanted to live "As normal as possible".She was a brave & courageous woman who never gave up. When I found out my Uncle was writing this book, I thought maybe it will help others who are going through the same thing. What I didn't realize at the time, it was also helping my Uncle. He was fighting for his life, Brenda was his life, and when she passed, he lost a part of him.See this is a story not only about my Aunt and her battle with breast cancer, it's also about the love my Uncle has for her. She was his everything! When I hear "A love like that only comes around once in a life time," I know they were talking about them.
The first anniversary of my Aunt's passing is coming up soon and when my Uncle started writing this book in memory of her, I hope it also started the healing process for him. What I will always remember about my Aunt was she had the most infectious laugh I have ever heard. She made me think I was the funniest person in the world. She made me feel special and loved and I will never forget it or her. For those of you who have/and are fighting against breast cancer, you are courageous, brave, beautiful and loved. This book is touching, inspiring, happy & sad. A loving tribute to all who are fighting against cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most touching & inspiring book I ever read!
From the first page, to ther last page and every page in between. Touching, inspiring, tender, happy, sad, informative, believable, unbelievable all in one. You will not put it down, I have read it cover to cover three times and I'am on the forth reading and still pick up pieces of enlightenment. You are depriving yourself if unread. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overall
About six years ago my grandmother died of breast cancer at the age of 63 and naturally I wanted to find out what I could do to PREVENT getting this disease. I went to the public library and put in some keywords into the computer and this was the only book that had the keyword PREVENT in the title. I checked the book out, read it, and loved it. It even convinced me to become a vegetarian. It is important that the purchaser realizes that the book concentrates on diet, exercise, and a overall healthy lifestyle which in my opinion is the only way to LOWER YOUR RISK.
It discusses other risks such as early menstruation, first child after age 30, choosing not to breastfeed, late menopause, and harmone replacement therapy. I read this book at the age of 27, I am 31 now and have bought copies for interested family members. I especially like the fact that it was written by several doctors who specialize in the field. If you want the truth about breast cancer prevention, then buy this book, you will not be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dark but Funny
This book really made me laugh when I had breast cancer, but there is no question that it is not for everyone. The humor is very dark. The seller was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll love this author!
People look at me strangely when I say how much I love this book. Miriam Engelberg left us a wonderful gift in tracing with such realism and wit her day-by-day experience of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. It is unbelievable that cancer proved stronger than this vivacious and funny, not to mention beautiful woman. How is it possible that her memoir makes me laugh out loud and to the point of tears on nearly every page? I guess her book is not for everyone, but if you like (maybe) dark humor, you'll love this book, and you'll love this author!

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Would have been a decent read except for the crude and vulgar street language...that ruined it for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars A quick and original read
Miriam Engelberg has accomplished in her memoir something that is both original and insightful, made possible by her near pessimistic tone and wit. Her book, Cancer Made Me a Shallower Person, surveys nearly everything between her emotional meltdown at work upon her diagnosis of breast cancer to her lack of revelation during her treatment. The narration is both humorous and near satirical seen in Engelberg's ploy and play on the protocols and strangeness of cancer and all its entities. Engelberg leaves nothing out of her book- not even the awkwardness that cancer strikes up. Whether it's a blue wig, noticing a person's redirection of attention to your bosom after you tell them it's breast cancer, or inability to anything else but watch television- Engelberg leaves nothing out. The conclusion of the book deals with the discovery of Engelberg's cancer relapse and metastasis in other organs. It is here that Engelberg exposes the most about her feelings and makes a true effort to defining her life while maintaining her distinctive and hilarious voice.
What makes this book so interesting is the medium in which Engelberg chooses to tell her story- comics. But this isn't your classic DC's, Cancer Made Me a Shallower Person uses the advantages of comics and their ability to divert from the plot and add, no pun intended, comic relief and the author's real thoughts in a fresh way. The book's mission is not inform a reader about cancer as seen in its use of layman's terms and avoidance of the detailed biological processes of cancer but it is instead created to entertain and make cancer seem maybe not as bad and show that life doesn't end after diagnosis. However, Engelberg is very insightful on the effects of chemo and how it riddled her social and emotional life though she does her best sometimes to make it seem nonexistent.
This is the first time that I have ever read a graphic novel and found this type of medium both effective and extremely entertaining. The voice and tone of Engelberg's writing is not geared toward self-sympathy nor holds a "poor little me" attitude but a reader still likes and sympathizes with the narrator because her personality which typically pushes away erratic emotions, and embraces her own flaws is occasionally broken and changed and it is that near breakdown that draws a reader into Engelberg's case. Here is a lady who has had cancer already and gone through the all the chemo and radiation and emotional stress- then it relapses into Stage IV breast cancer but she's found a way to cope with her comics. It is her ability to continue on to do what she likes that inspirational to any of her readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comic Genius
This book present facts, emotions and all other kinds of stuff in a way that makes you laugh at the whole perversity of the universe. Worth a read, definitely worth owning -- especially for the newly diagnosed. ... Read more

Product Description
"A fascinating cultural history of breast cancer."*

This first cultural history of the social attitudes and treatments surrounding breast cancer in the past century powerfully examines the relationship between women and their doctors. At the heart of the book are two unpublished correspondences-one between Barbara Mueller, a woman diagnosed with breast cancer eighty years ago, and her surgeon, William Steward Halsted, father of the radical mastectomy, and the other between Rachel Carson, who was writing Silent Spring as she was battling breast cancer, and her personal physician George Crile, Jr.

"Why did it take most of the twentieth century for breast cancer to move from being viewed as a disease that affected women to a woman's disease? How do we explain the stubborn reluctance of American women to understand breast cancer as a feminist issue? Leopold's answers to these questions, along with her skillful attempt to fill a historiographical void in the breast cancer literature, make for engaging reading."—*Regina Morantz-Sanchez, The Women's Review of Books

"The apposition of Barbara Mueller's interaction with Halsted and Rachel Carson's with Crile is compelling and poignant."—Jerome Groopman, The New York Times Book Review

"I would recommend [this book] to anyone . . . as a truly engaged social history of a curious, melancholy, and, until now, untold chapter in medical history."—Katherine A. Powers, The Boston Globe ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
I am a third generation breast cancer survivor.I am also a surgeon's daughter.Ellen Leopold nailed what women have been subjected to in the 150 past years in relation to breast cancer. However, as amply pointed out by her, we have only taken a small step forward. While I loved this book, I found myself angered once again by the male dominated medical society and by, even today, women's capitultion to paternalism. This is a must read for every woman, young or old and regardless of health status.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who's Mother Are You?
Ellen Leopold's book clearly and intelligently examines the problems women historically faced given the constraints of inadequate doctor-patient relationships and treatments. Ms. Leopold is also obviously, a wonderfulwriter and I look forward to hearing more from her evidently enormous bodyof knowledge.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rather thin in parts, but not without value
The best and most original parts of this book are the parts about the Halsted-Mueller letters and the letters of Rachel Carson. Other sections, particularly near the end of the book, are vague and repeat ideas writtenby many other writers on the subject, including Sontag, Yalom, etc. Theauthor's take on breast cancer today is very weak, and does not explore, oreven mention, our culture's ever-increasing interest in the cancer/geneticsrelationship. All in all, the book is not worthless, but it's stilldisappointing. ... Read more

Product Description
From a leading specialist, an empowering new book that gives breast cancer patients the confidence and knowledge to seek the treatment that is right for them

According to Dr. John Link, most women diagnosed with breast cancer today are not getting the proper treatment for their disease. Many are being undertreated, while others are being needlessly overtreated. In this follow-up book to his successful The Breast Cancer Survival Manual, Link now shows women how to be their own best advocate in getting the proper care. In this empowering book, he gives women the information and resources they need to be proactive about their cancer, and ultimately to help pursue a course of treatment that will leave them with the fewest physical or emotional scars. Through true stories of his own patients and information on the latest medical advances, Link helps women to understand the potential risks and benefits of various treatments. An openminded and experienced oncologist, he addresses everything from the decision to seek a second opinion, to the question of patient-doctor trust, to discerning under- or overtreatment, to alternative and integrative medical therapies. Take Charge of Your Breast Cancer offers an important new approach that puts the power in the hands of the patient.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learn How ToTake Charge of Your Breast Cancer
My Sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, and I wanted to learn as much as I could about the treatment available to her. This book was a good place to begin to learn about the different types of breast cancer, the medications available, and how to access treatment. I kept this book and used it as a good reference. If you, or a family member or friend is diagnosed with breast cancer, this is one of the first books to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative for the newly diagnosed
Most newly diagnosed females know little and fear much. Books like this help the lay person learn and sort out options. I know. I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wake-up call for those dealing with managed care
After getting them for my mom, I highly recommend this book and his earlier one ("Survival Guide").There's quite a bit of overlap, but I wouldn't want to be without either one.

I wish we had read this book before we rushed into surgery. It discusses some situations in which chemo is done BEFORE the surgery, with the advantage that you can see whether the chemo is working or not by how much the tumor shrinks.Often less radical surgery is then necessary. And if you're feeling shy about asking for a second opinion, you won't anymore after hearing the experiences of his mother and sister...

Also recommended for many helpful tips and coverage of the psychological and family issues (but it's about a year less up to date than this book): "Just Get Me Through This."A great overview and starting place before the books by Dr. Link.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent companion book to Breast Cancer Survival Manual
This book is an excellent companion book to Dr. John Link's first book "Breast Cancer Survival Manual".His first book is a good crash course on all the information and terminology needed to understand your diagnosis and treatments. This book however is more personal. It empowers you to be your best advocate. He encourages second opinions and treating the WHOLE woman... not just her cancer. So often physicians only see the woman as a part that is damaged. They don't consider quality of life issues along with their treatments.I recommend this book highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Advice for the person - not just the patient
A diagnosis of breast cancer can make you feel powerless. You are thrust into a world where nothing makes sense and asked to make life and death decisions - or have others make them for you. Dr. Link is a practicing oncologist who understands this.

Taking Charge of Your Breast Cancer empowers you. It gives insight into what is going on in your body, in the doctor's office and in your world. The advice does not come packaged in a condensending tone. You feel that this man knows what it is like to be a patient.

I found myself nodding in agreement with so much that he said. Second opinions, alternative treatments, chemo before surgery... so many topics that are presented clearly. This book makes taking charge - getting control back - so much easier.

The focus of this book is curing breast cancer. Recurrences are real and he deals with this, but he concentrates on living life to the fullest. The positive message is good to hear. ... Read more

Product Description
The words "you have breast cancer" have the power to terrify a woman and the people who love her, irrevocably changing their lives forever. In many people's minds, cancer carries with it a death sentence and thus, the emotional and physical journey to overcome it begins. Not Just One in Eight: Stories of Breast Cancer Survivors and Their Families, is the culmination of Barbara Stevens five-year odyssey to understand the physical and emotional ramifications of a breast cancer diagnosis from the moment of its pronouncement, and the irreparable impact it has on family and friends and the way each one experiences the disease.

Not Just One in Eight shares the stories of eighteen women and one man who have all experienced something different - whether is was their diagnosis, their treatment or the emotional issues of coping with the disease - no two are alike. As you read these stories, the true picture of this life-threatening illness is revealed. Each story takes an intimate look at the survivor and his or her family and answers questions like how each person handled the diagnosis; what medical decisions were made; what fears they confronted; were their relationships strengthened or weakened; how their children coped and did their fear of dying increase or decrease.

You will come away with some very heartfelt and powerful knowledge after reading Not Just One in Eight:

1.Breast cancer, like any life-threatening disease or injury is not a one-person disease. It is one that affects the entire family;2.Knowledge is a tool. Learn about your disease. Empower yourself;3.Early detection can and does save lives. Do not let a doctor tell you that you are too young to get breast cancer. Anyone who has a lump should get it checked out by a physician. No doctor can give a 100 percent guarantee that a lump is not cancer without doing some kind of test or procedure; 4.Take responsibility for yourself because ultimately it is your life and you have to live with the consequences of your decision; 5.Family and friends need to support whatever medical decision a patient makes regardless of whether or not they agree with that decision;6.Lastly and perhaps most important - breast cancer is not a death sentence. We can and do survive!

Breast cancer is a devastating disease with many different consequences. And today, even though there are many choices, many women are still faced with surgery that leaves them breastless, drugs that destroy their immune systems while attempting to kill the cancer cells or treatments which sometime create secondary health problems. Not Just One in Eight provides a compassionate and often provocative look at these things and the impact this disease has on so many women and the people who love them.Amazon.com Review
"Breast cancer is not a one-person diagnosis," writes author Barbara F. Stevens. "It is a family diagnosis." Stevens, a breast cancer survivor whose mother also had breast cancer (though she died of ovarian cancer), interviewed 300 breast cancer survivors and their families to learn the personal truth about this disease--not just the medical decisions and treatments, but how the survivor and their family and loved ones coped. Not Just One in Eight presents 19 of their stories.

Each story draws us in and holds us captive, as the breast cancer survivor tells about life before and after the diagnosis, including treatments and emotional reactions. Loved ones contribute their observations and feelings, so we get a collage of intimate perspectives and anecdotes. Sometimes the loved ones are wonderfully supportive; other times, they cannot cope and the relationship is disrupted. Sometimes their reactions are shocking, for example, a sister who said, "Well, it's a good thing your breasts are so small because that means you don't have much to lose!" A few marriages dissolve. Postscripts bring us up to date on what has happened since the interviews. Many report, "My health is excellent," but some have not survived.

After the stories, Stevens offers chapters on how close we are to a cure and how to lessen the chance of being misdiagnosed. A section on sexuality is particularly strong ("what you really want to know that nobody will talk about"), with quotes from the women (including single, married, and lesbian women) and their partners about sex after a mastectomy.

This is a powerful, moving book, with lessons for all of us. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for every breast cancer patient
This book touches on something that totally gets ignored by the medical establishment: the emotional issue and the fact that when you are diagnosed with breast cancer, you get propelled into another (very dark and scary) world from which you can never come back.
I had to make all my (alternative) decisions on my own - no support from family.
Their comments were:
"There is no cure for cancer".
"You cannot avert the fate of death".
"Deal with it, if you cannot, go see a psychiatrist". Yeah right, even the psychiatrist does not know what it feels like !!
In my opinion what is missing in this book is that the profiles do not tell of the patient's HER2 status and there was no mention of whether they took HRT or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring your kleenex..
I had a breast cancer scare recently and happened to have this book which I hadn't read. I actually stayed up all night reading this beautiful book. It turned out my "scare" was a cyst, but as a hospice nurse I see with so many women it isn't. It's real. These stories are amazing, and yes sad, because some are the most amazing survivors, and some sadly do not pull through. But every experiene you read about is rich with the person's life, self, friends family and the hardship on everyone when a person gets a diagnosis of breast cancer. I would recommend all women to read this book, it is important to see how we all must do our examinations and how very real breast cancer is for women. This book will leave you touched, maybe a little worried, but also with a feeling of being blessed that you got to see the life and feel a part of the struggles of other women.(and yes, men too get breast cancer, and there are stories of men too). I would recommend it, but it is an emotional book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique perspective.
As a physician who specializes in breast disorders of which cancer is obviously the most important one, I can highly recommend this book to families and friends of women with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Ms Stevens insight into the emotional issues those of us close to someone with breast cancer experience are enlightening, intelligent and always helpful. We can all learn from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS FOR EVERYONE!
Everyone knows someone who has/had breast cancer. My best friend went through it 10 years ago, so I thought I knew all about it.Recently, as a 6th friend shared her battle, I realized I knew very little about breast cancer. That's when I picked up a copy of Barbara Stevens' book, "Not Just One in Eight."

Today, I purchased my 8th or 9th copy to give to someone who is afraid to get a mammogram.I have given this book to friends with other friends who have breast cancer, mothers of daughters with breast cancer, husbands of women with breast cancer, and my own sister. This book gives everyone who is touched by this disease the most important gift of all: knowledge. And knowledge is the power to fight back.

I had information from 6 very emotional sources before I read "Not Just One in Eight".Now I have an arsenal of information from 20 detailed and individual accounts. Both the mystery, and the fear, is gone.I don't have breast cancer, and we have no family history, but I feel confident that I now know how to recognize, meet and defeat this "boogey man" should it ever come calling.

Every woman alive today should sleep better after reading these stories and accumulating the combined wisdom Barbara Stevens shares with us. Every man with a mother, sister, wife or daughter would also find valuable knowledge and power by investing the time needed to read this book. This book IS for everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal journeys in a public forum.
With much talent and compassion, Ms. Stevens has shared her own story with breast cancer, but also the stories of other women and men. Recognizing the impact this type of diagnosis means for the individual, but also the family and friends surrounding them, Ms. Stevens shares each of their stories from their own perspectives.

A wonderful book where you can learn from those who have traveled the paths before you..... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ENGAGING FROM PAGE 1
Reading the heartfelt and honest stories of these women was extrememly educational and empowering. This book is so vital for all previvors and relatives or friends of previvors. Knowing you are not alone in making the agonizing decisions that come with learning you or a loved one are at a high cancer risk is so reassuring. Whether a previvor decides to "green light" the option of surgery or hold off, knowledge is power. These girls are very courageous in reliving their experiences and reminding us that we all have the power.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a godsend!
My wife, and the mother of my three children, was only 41 when she succumbed to breast cancer. With her family history, we assume she had the BRCA although back then people weren't routinely tested for it.My three children were tested and two of them have it.PREVIVORS is packed with valuable information and is written with wonderful personal stories that make it a delightful book to read. It is must reading for anyone with a family history of breat cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best resource for women at risk for breast cancer!!!!
It was nice to read a book and hear the voices of other "previvors."The medical information is also helpful.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! The book I have been waiting for!
I have never had breast cancer but I have a sister and and aunt who had it. I have always been told my chances of developing it were higher than average. I spend my time googling for info, and here it is, all in one place! Plus the author uses the stories of these women and their personal experiences to help guide the reader through the processes associated with being high risk- everything from genetic testing to surveillance and preventative surgery. It is a book I can always refer back to, not "just" a memoir that gets read once and put away, but it reads like one. The thing I like most is that it is not overly technical so that even someone like me who has zero medical back round can understand it.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has breast or ovarian cancer in the family! ... Read more

In the early nineteenth century in the United States, cancer in the breast was a rare disease. Now it seems that breast cancer is everywhere.Written by a medical historian who is also a doctor, Unnatural History tells how and why this happened.Rather than there simply being more disease, breast cancer has entered the bodies of so many American women and the concerns of nearly all the rest, mostly as a result of how we have detected, labeled, and responded to the disease. The book traces changing definitions and understandings of breast cancer, the experience of breast cancer sufferers, clinical and public health practices, and individual and societal fears. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Moving and Thoughtful History of Medicine
This is a moving and thoughtful book that packs a lot into relatively few pages. It has haunted me for months since I read it. It is a nuanced, non-polemical account of the hidden dialectic (hidden, at least, to us laymen) between surgeons and internists, family physicians and researchers, counselors and advocates, about what cancer means and how to respond to it.Aronowitz moves skillfully back and forth between broad-stroke history of medical technology and the famous researchers of the past 200 years, and the intimate details of individual patients and their physicians and loved ones, gleaned from journals, correspondence, and medical records. It's not for the faint of heart:Some of the basic themes of the book are profoundly depressing.Aronowitz shows that there was essentially no change in age-adjusted breast cancer mortality in the 200 years between 1800 and 2000, and that most of the apparent improvements in outcomes related to defining more conditions as "cancer" that were less likely to result in death, and treating them aggressively. He also carefully disects the ways in which physicians treating breast cancer cope with the essential hopelessness of much of what they do, including lots of subtle, well-meaning, and even unintended deception of their patients, and finding myriad ways to define "success" that do not depend on prolonging a patient's life or improving its quality. He carefully attends to the interplay of hope, pain, and spiritual fulfillment in the face of death. And he casts a cold light of analysis on many popular ideas about detection and treatment. But he is sympathetic and compassionate towards all, doctors and patients. Most of all, patients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Cookbook Every Cook Should Own
This cookbook has been around in one form or another for a long, long time and I haven't used the copy Hubby Dub's mother gave me on our first anniversary in ages. I don't know why, I suppose it's because I have a cookbook collection that is threatening to take over our home.

But I found this version a while back, while touristing off in beautiful Laguna Beach in sunny Southern California. I spotted a sign for an estate sale. Hubby Dub never likes to go to these, he hates garage sales too, likewise thrift stores, but I poked him in the arm, he made a U turn and I discovered a soul who really liked to cook, sadly she'd passed away before I got to meet her. She had dozens and dozens of cookbooks, many of which I already had, but I discovered some gems, including this one.

And surprisingly, a lot of the meals I've been making lately have their genesis in this book. I change a lot of things, sub here and there, but sometimes I don't and when I don't the meals have been just fine, better than fine actually. There's a reason THE BETTER HOMES AND GARDEN COOKBOOK has been around since 1930. If you don't have it and you like to cook, then you should. Mine is pink plaid now. I still have the old red plaid one, because you can never, ever have too many cookbooks, now can you?

I love this cookbook. It was one of my wedding presents and has been my go-to book for two years. It covers everything.Hardboiling an egg, baking a potato, marinades, casseroles, crab cakes, baking fresh bread, tricky candy recipes. The 3 ring binder means it will lay flat to read while cooking, and you can clip in some other recipes you find. And because it's the pink edition there are some extra recipes in the back.

It's the perfect first cookbook. ... Read more

Product Description
Suzy and Nancy Goodman were more than sisters. They were best friends, confidantes, and partners in the grand adventure of life. For three decades, nothing could separate them. Not college, not marriage, not miles. Then Suzy got sick. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977; three agonizing years later, at thirty-six, she died.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. The Goodman girls were raised in postwar Peoria, Illinois, by parents who believed that small acts of charity could change the world. Suzy was the big sister—the homecoming queen with an infectious enthusiasm and a generous heart. Nancy was the little sister—the tomboy with an outsized sense of justice who wanted to right all wrongs. The sisters shared makeup tips, dating secrets, plans for glamorous fantasy careers. They spent one memorable summer in Europe discovering a big world far from Peoria. They imagined a long life together—one in which they’d grow old together surrounded by children and grandchildren.
Suzy’s diagnosis shattered that dream.

In 1977, breast cancer was still shrouded in stigma and shame. Nobody talked about early detection and mammograms. Nobody could even say the words “breast” and “cancer” together in polite company, let alone on television news broadcasts. With Nancy at her side, Suzy endured the many indignities of cancer treatment, from the grim, soul-killing waiting rooms to the mistakes of well-meaning but misinformed doctors. That’s when Suzy began to ask Nancy to promise. To promise to end the silence. To promise to raise money for scientific research. To promise to one day cure breast cancer for good. Big, shoot-for-the-moon promises that Nancy never dreamed she could fulfill. But she promised because this was her beloved sister.
I promise, Suzy. . . .  Even if it takes the rest of my life.

Suzy’s death—both shocking and senseless—created a deep pain in Nancy that never fully went away. But she soon found a useful outlet for her grief and outrage. Armed only with a shoebox filled with the names of potential donors, Nancy put her formidable fund-raising talents to work and quickly discovered a groundswell of grassroots support. She was aided in her mission by the loving tutelage of her husband, restaurant magnate Norman Brinker, whose dynamic approach to entrepreneurship became Nancy’s model for running her foundation. Her account of how she and Norman met, fell in love, and managed to achieve the elusive “true marriage of equals” is one of the great grown-up love stories among recent memoirs.

Nancy’s mission to change the way the world talked about and treated breast cancer took on added urgency when she was herself diagnosed with the disease in 1984, a terrifying chapter in her life that she had long feared. Unlike her sister, Nancy survived and went on to make Susan G. Komen for the Cure into the most influential health charity in the country and arguably the world. A pioneering force in cause-related marketing, SGK turned the pink ribbon into a symbol of hope everywhere. Each year, millions of people worldwide take part in SGK Race for the Cure events. And thanks to the more than $1.5 billion spent by SGK for cutting-edge research and community programs, a breast cancer diagnosis today is no longer a death sentence. In fact, in the time since Suzy’s death, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer has risen from 74 percent to 98 percent.

3-0 out of 5 stars "... I swore it with all of my broken heart."
"Promise Me" gives us the story of the relationship between Susan G. Komen and her sister Nancy Brinker, and how Susan's battle against breast cancer led to a promise by sister Nancy to do something to make things better for women facing the disease in the future. The fulfillment of the promise was the formation of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization.

The first several chapters describe the sisters' relationship, some family history, and the values that were instilled in them by their strong, supportive, and strongly service-oriented family. From an early age we see hints of attitudes that shape both of the women as they grow, mature, and become adult women, taking on the challenges of being wives, mothers, and participating members of their communities.

Susan's death marks a watershed moment in Nancy's life, and one that ultimately pushes her to fulfill her promise to Susan in the way she knew best: by raising funds to fight breast cancer. The Komen organization chose to attack breast cancer on several fronts: by providing badly needed information to newly diagnosed survivors (they established the first "800" number for women to call for information), by funding cutting edge research in causes and cures for the disease, by increasing awareness and fighting the stigma attached to breast cancer, and by providing assistance to those who need it in obtaining testing and diagnosis (75% of funds raised by local affiliates remains local).

As the book progresses, Nancy tells us further of other defining influences in her life: a strong relationship with a supremely supportive husband, Norman Brinker, who stands beside her, and guides her, as she takes on the fight against breast cancer on a personal level and on a professional level, as she establishes and grows the Komen organization.

The evolution of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization is described largely in summary style. Here is not a detailed, week by week historical account of activites, decisions, growth milestones, but broad brushstrokes of major events over the course of years. One might have hoped for a little more detail, but I know that as we look back over decades of our lives, it is often only possible to recall the broad trends.

At the end of each chapter is a section of ancillary material. Many, perhaps most of the sections are vignettes of portions of people's lives as they relate to fighting breast cancer. They range from a look at breast cancer treatments through the ages, to the story of a researcher who is stricken with a brain injury and fights back to make a breakthrough discovery. They are rich additions to the book and really provide another dimension, beyond the personal story that Nancy Brinker tells of herself and her sister.

If you are looking for a detailed history of the founding of the Komen organization, you will not find it in this book. If you are looking for an inspiring story of 2 sisters, one who leaves the world too soon, and the other who dedicates her energy to trying to prevent that from happening again to other sisters, then this book will fulfill that mission. It is more of a "light" autobiography of Nancy Brinker than a history of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

I am still in the process of reading this book, however, what I have read is very moving.Very informative on the history of breast cancer and treatments.

Product Description
One out of nine women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. For too long, women have erroneously believed that there is little or nothing they can do to prevent this dread illness. Our major medical efforts are directed toward detecting and treating, rather than preventing, breast cancer.

Professor Jane Plant, one of Britain's most eminent scientists, contracted breast cancer in 1987.When orthodox medicine gave up and she was told she had only three months to live, she used her extensive scientific training and her knowledge of other cultures to find a way to survive. In her research, she was startled to find that in China breast cancer affects far fewer women than in Western countries.Plant considered there could be a dietary trigger for the illness. As Plant continued her research, she became convinced there was a casual link between consumption of dairy products and breast cancer.

In this book, Professor Plant shares the discoveries that allowed her to triumph over breast cancer. With a clear statement of the scientific principles behind her discovery, Professor Plant includes detailed suggestions, including menus and recipes, for ways to alter your diet by eliminating or reducing consumption of many suspected cancer-causing agents, especially dairy products, and replacing them with healthful alternatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars For ALL cancer patients
This book provides a very thorough analysis of the connection between dairy and cancer.I've purchased copies for family and friends, but when they look at it, they put their fingers in their ears and go "la-la-la-la..."Cow's milk is so ingrained in our culture, nobody wants to admit that it could be detrimental to our health. So, I now give a copy to anyone I know who already has cancer; at least they have a good reason to explore alternatives to helping themselves stay healthy and alive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quit Milk, Survive Breast & Prostate Cancer
The leading cause of death for women between 25 - 75 years of age is cancer. The type of cancer that kills the most women is breast cancer.About 1 out of 10 women will contract breast cancer.

That is a large number of wives, girlfriends, mothers, sisters, friends and coworkers who will be lost to people.

One of these victims was almost Dr. Jane Plant, the first female head of the British Geological Survey and one of the first women hired by the British Geological Survey as a scientist.

Floored by a diagnosis of breast cancer,Dr. Plant decided to respond with what she knew best:science. Part of what theBritish Geological Survey does is to analyze the relationship between diseases and geographic areas to find links between the disease and what is going on with the land.

Dr. Plant knew from her work that Asians of the far east do not get breast or prostate cancer as often as westerners do. It has been noticed that until recent times Asians tended not to consume milk.

Still having a growing breast cancer tumor threatening her life after having had a mastectomy, several other surgeries, several radiation treatments and chemotherapy Dr. Plant decided to remove all dairy products from her diet.

The tumor began measurably shrinking after a few days and the cancer disappeared from her body not to return.

This story sounds like a fairly typical anecdotal account. What makes this book atypical is that being a breast cancer survivor who is also a scientist Dr. Plant's book has ample citations from well respected sources to support her beliefs.

Dr. Plant's strongest argument is that cows and human beings share a hormone in common:Insulin Like Growth Factor 1 ( ILGF-1). This hormone is identical in structure in both cows and humans.Cancer is basically cellular reproduction running amok and ILGF-1 stimulates cellular growth.Higher levels of this hormone in the blood stream have been associated with increased breast and prostate cancer activity. Dairy cows have been systematically bred for centuries to produce more milk, which means that their bodies also produce more ILGF-1, which finds its way into milk.Contemporary dairy production in the US also involves feeding cows a cocktail of various hormones to increase milk production.

The dairy industry has always maintainedILGF-1 in milk is not a problem because ILGF-1 doesn't survive the human digestion process. In her book Dr. Plant quotes two contemporary studies that show that it is likely ILGF-1 does survive digestion intact and does make it into the human blood stream.

Dairy products and to a lesser extent meat are the dominant sources of ILGF-1 in the diet of most westerners.

Dr. Plant also presents citations for many studies that show possible relationships between cancer and milk. Most of them having little to do with milk fat.Dr. Plant took personal interest in this observation.Like many women she had always made it a point to eat low fat dairy products to avoid potential health issues.

Dr. Plant also gives a fascinating description of how she thinks science works and where she thinks the philosophy of contemporary cancer research has gone astray in terms of good science and has deprived people of freedom from breast cancer.

This book is not dry and maintains the tone of a personal story while being clear without sacrificing rigor with the facts.

The book also gives her personal account of what she went through emotionally and psychologically while she was being treated for cancer.

It has many useful tips for someone else who might be going through the same ordeal. For example, she is convinced that had she known about philosophical differences inthe medical culture she could have delayed if not avoided her mastectomy.

Neither a vegetarian or a vegan Dr. Plant concludes her book with a dietary regime for reducing breast ( & prostate) cancer risk. It calls for a vegan diet dominated by organic produce for people who have cancer and as near vegan a diet as people are willing to tolerate to prevent breast ( & prostate) caner.

I found this book to be enjoyable as well as personally empowering. The book has a warm, personal tone.It also plays out like a fascinating detective story of science while giving the reader a lot of information to take charge of their health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Info on Lymphedema
If I were the magic book fairy, I would put this book in the hands of every breast cancer survivor. As a recent breast cancer surviver (my lumpectomy and sentinel node surgery was in Jan 2010, followed by radiation), I found this book offered me the most complete and detailed information I sought. In fact, I had checked this book out of the hospital cancer center library and was so impressed, I purchased a copy from Amazon. It addressed all of my questions and concerns, from symptoms through treatment(s), including a complete illustrated explanation of lymphatic self-massage.I had learned the technique from my physical therapist, and this serves as an extremely handy reference for refreshing my knowledge.Further, the book is enhanced by the personal stories of several cancer survivors' experience with their own lymphedema.

My wife and I found lots of great help in this book.Detailed enough for our academic minds.Honest enough to be helpful in a difficult time. And staightforward enough to be understandable. We showed it to our therapist who liked it enough to include it in her list of resources for others with lymphedema. We highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Help
I found this book very informative and comforting. It not only tells about lymphedema, about why it starts and what can be done about it, but the book has the stories of other women with lymphedema and shows what they are doing for their condition. It helped make me aware that I am not the only person to have had problems after I was treated for breast cancer.Since my therapy for lymphedema I have used this book to maintain my arm's shape. I think the book is a wonderful guide. It was a real relief for me to find this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Helps Person in Small Town
I have had lymphedema for several years.I live outside a very small town which does not have a person who knows how to treat lymphedema.I found this book on Amazon.com and it gave me information that helped find atherpist in another city.

I must travel nearly two hundred miles to reachmy therapist, but with her help and with the information in this book, theswelling has gone down and my arm is almost back to normal. In anothercouple of weeks I should not need to see the therapist any longer.Becauseof the detailed information in this book, and because of the therapist'sinstructions I know how to bandage my arm, what kind of sleeve to wear onit, exercises I should and should not do, even what kind of breathing helpsmy arm not swell.

I don't know what I would have done if this book hadnot been available.I wish it had been written years ago when my swellingbegan.I recommend it very highly. ... Read more

Product Description
Next to skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. Me, the Crazy Woman and Breast Cancer is about strength, solutions, support and wisdom for the cancer patient, survivor, caregiver or anyone who has a friend or loved one battling a life-threatening illness.

In Me, the Crazy Woman and Breast Cancer, Stacy Shelton had to face every woman's worst nightmare when she was diagnosed, not once, but twice, with breast cancer.

To make matters worse, a new presence, which she dubbed "Crazy Woman," took up residence in her brain, wreaking havoc and forcing her to face her own mortality.

By walking herself through her own death and conquering additional obstacles that sometimes seemed too much to survive, she discovered an enlightened sense of purpose and a newfound way of living, free from fear.

Me, the Crazy Woman and Breast Cancer, is a hauntingly moving memoir that will leave you knowing all life's lessons are to be cherished. More so, it provides a roadmap to solace, both for those who are afflicted with a life-threatening disease and those who love them.

Bob Burg, bestselling author of "The Go-Giver," says "This book should be read - no, it should be devoured, by anyone whose own life or the life of a loved one is affected by this horrible sickness."

Bestselling author, Libby Gill, "You Unstuck: Mastering the New Rules of Risk-taking in Work & Life," says "I know this story will give hope to many people struggling with illness, pain or plain old fear. Read it!"

Publisher and Editor in Chief of "WE Magazine for Women," Heidi Richards Mooney, says, "This book is a true work of art. It is written for the mother, daughter, son, husband, family and friends of those whose loved one is battling breast cancer."

Svetlana Kim, author of "White Pearl and I: A Memoir of a Political Refugee," says Me, the Crazy Woman and Breast Cancer is "Astonishing...along with shock, fear and pain, Stacy Shelton found strength, wisdom and deep gratitude for her life and her loved ones. Her story offers the same for others fighting cancer or for those who love someone with the disease. This story will inspire you to savor each moment of your life and to embrace all that it has to offer - including the obstacles. It will make you forever grateful for God's precious gift called life." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Strength and Wisdom
I met Stacy Shelton this past weekend at Bob Burg's "Extreme Business Makeover" seminar. After Bob spoke, Ms. Shelton came up to speak to me. She immediately touched a chord within me that resonated compassion and concern. After a few moments of sharing, she left and came back with her book and gave me a copy. Awed by her aura of empathy, I went back to the hotel that night and began to read her book. I could not put it down. It was as if two hands reached out, one grabbing my throat, the other holding my heart. I was in "shock and awe" at what Stacy had been through.

John Keats said, "Beauty is truth, truth beauty. That is all ye know on earth and all ye need to know." If Keats could have read Ms. Shelton's book, he would have had so much more to say about what we need to "know". The "beauty and truth" of this magnificent book lies in the courage, strength, conviction, commitment and compassion she emmualtes to others, while acknowledging the "crazy woman" who interrupts her stream of consciousness. This is a must read for everyone. We all know someone who has been through this horrible disease. Ms. Shelton's gut-fully honest portrayal of her fight and her determination gives all of us the common denominators that we need: hope and love!!!! God's Blessings Stacy!

This book is a shining example of courage! The heros of this world are often not the ones that get the blaze of publicity, but the ones who quietly carry on through the hell of disease and disaster.Stacy, you are truly one of the heros.Best wishes, Teresa Martin

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!
This book should be in the hands of every medical professional that deals with anyone on a journey with cancer...fromdiagnosis through treatment.I met Stacy a few years back and had the great fortune of working along side her and becoming her friend in the meantime. I started to read this book as her friend, but being an oncology nurse, it became so much more to me.While I've never had cancer, I've walked part of many people's journeys as their caregiver.I have always said being an oncology nurse is such a blessing. It keeps one grounded and connected to the important things in life.Even with my own experiences, I learned so much from Stacy's personal journey and am so thankful she chose to share it in the way she did.I laughed, cried and wanted to get on a plane just to go give her a hug and hold her, knowing how precious and fragile life is.I am sending copies to all my former co-workers.Every physician and nurse should read it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This book was a fantastic book. I could not put it down once I started. This book will make every person think differently about breast cancer. Breast cancer runs in my family and this book touched my life. I am very proud to know Stacy personally. Great job my friend.
